Congratulations on reaching the milestone of going home! What a journey these last 3 months. I just started reading the journal entries after my sister from Park Rapids told me to read the Sunday, 4/25/04 article in the Pioneer Press. The progress is incredible; only through God's power, I am sure. Keep up the hard work. 'So happy for your family that you will be together in your own house today.

We can feel the excitement in the air. We will continue to uphold you all in prayer, along with Breck, Riley, Steph's parents, her brother and his family, and Darla, and Denise and her family. Through Caringbridge you have shared your hearts and you are an amazing family. God will continue to sustain you in the many days and months ahead. We will pray for Cheryl and her staff as they continue the physical therapy sessions. And for Doug, Steph, Breck and Riley as they head into uncharted routines. Things will never be exactly the same as before the accident but God nevers fails and your family times will take on new meaning. Happy homecoming:-) Jeff and Julann

Doug, Steph, Roger and Sharon,

It is with tears of joy that I write this entry. (seriously I can hardly see the page). Seeing you last night so excited about going home was so great. Your family, so excited to begin the next part of your training./journey. Being around you and your family has been so wonderful but so humbling too. To see what you have been through and to see the challenges and barriers that you have overcome and continue to overcome should make all of us think about the things in our life that sometimes get us down or frustrated. I think of these things and think of what you have gone through and it makes me realize not to sweat the small stuff. The faith that you and your family has, has also been an inspiration to me and to many that read these pages each day/week. My faith is stronger because of you and the miracle that God has performed in you. We love you guys, will miss you guys and can't wait to come up your way to see you in Nevis! God bless you all! (Steph you are truly an inspiration- your strength, faith and fortitude are amazing. I hope I am half the wife you are!)

It's time! My girls are home from school today, so as we were starting out on this lazy day at home I remembered - it's FRIDAY! Jordan and I just read through some of the messages and the one from Riley reminds me that it's time! You are ready to take this next step and your family is ready to have you all home. And Doug and Step you are ready! I know this has been a day we all have imagined in our mind and now it's here.
We will continue to keep you in our prayers, today and in the days to come. Thanks for including us in your journey, for sharing your faith, your joys and your sorrows.
My verse for you is this: Acts 4:20 "For we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard." It is the verse our evangelism effort is highlighting this year - it is a verse we focused on last weekend at a youth training event - but I think it's mostly a verse, for me, about what I have witnesses can happen, when we hold on to what is secure in our life - God - in the midst of many, many uncertainties. I, for one, cannot help but be amazed.
See you in a month! (Doug no need fro handsprings!)

Doug,
I'm so glad to hear you are ready to head home.
I just heard this morning of your accident thru an email that Desire'e sent for Coach Larz 25th celebration. The news left me stunned. Buddy, I'll be praying for you in the coming days and months. If you recover like you run, I'm sure you'll set a grueling pace followed up with a relentless kick to the finish. When you're well enough, send me a note. I'd love to motor up to see you. Wish we could be there to help celebrate the finish of this race and the beginning of a new one! I'm sure it's going to be both a joyous day to be heading home and also a sad time as you say goodbye to all the staff that you have come to know so well, and that have provided such excellent care for Doug. We will continue to pray that the transition to the new therapists will go well and that God will help you keep all the anxieties in check. I'm confident that Cheryl will make sure that the new therapy sessions go well.

We're glad to hear that you will be continuing to keep posting updates on caringbridge. What a blessing it has been to keep up with Doug's progress and to read all the comments, scripture, and prayers from around the country.
Just a thought, it would be cool to get a picture of Doug leaving the hospital and post it on the website. (if you have a camera there and find the time to do it tomorrow)

May God bless you all on the big day tomorrow, and we'll be seeing you in Nevis one of these days!

Love you guys!

Doug, WAY TO GO BIG GUY!!!!!!!!!!! How thrilling for you to finally head home!!! Reading your entry after your weekend last week brought me to tears at my desk. I'm so glad you already felt "the healing begin" as you sat on the deck overlooking the lake. I felt like I could feel it with you. You have come a long way and everyone is so proud of you and your drive to get back to your family and home where life will be much more real in that wonderful family setting that you have. You have shown so many of us that we take life for granted, even each and every step we take. Wow, it's unfortunate that you had to experience this journey but if it's any consolation, you've changed a lot of lives and I'd be willing to bet that you've furthured the Kingdom of God through it. You are a living testament of the Faith and perserverence God exects of us. Please know that you have touched many just here in southern MN. We wish you all the best in your healing at home with your family, and we'll continue to watch for updates on this wonderful web site.

Roger, I wish to personally thank you for your diligence in keeping the world up to date on Doug's progress. You are very much appreciated!!! Keep loving that family of yours, you're a real gem!!!!!

Hi Doug! Going home - boy doesn't that sound great.!! You should be proud of yourself! I am just amazed at how quickly you have progressed since you started your rehab. You have worked hard and it defintely shows.

When I heard this would be your last week in Fargo I meant to get up to see you but I've had bronchitis since last Friday and didn't think you needed to be exposed to my germs. I know how you feel now, when you say your food doesn't taste good. I could just as well have been eating paper this last week! It's no fun to eat when your taste buds are all screwed up, that's for sure. Mine are finally coming around and I'm glad to hear that things are tasting better to you as well. Being home and having home cooked meals will make a big difference for you, too, I'm sure.

Well, just wanted to check in one more time before you take off. Please know all your friends in the Athletic Dept. are still praying for you daily and think of you often. We'll try to keep up to date with your progress through Coach Lars and hope to see you in the Sports Arena one of these days!

Douglas....in race terms....You have now taken the lead, it's time to increase on it.... Fighting through and being lifted up through the pain has brought you great strides during the past few weeks. Doug,

During many runs together we often talk times/numbers to compare/evaluate ourselves or other athletes. Being a runner and a numbers person seem to go hand in hand. With that in mind, I would like to use some numbers to make a point.

88 days since accident
90,000 hits on this site
1,000 + hits a day on an average
approx. 1 hit every 90 sec. on an average for past 3 months

Someone, somewhere has literally been checking up on you, on an average of every minute you have been in the hospital. (this is not to mention all the times people have just spent thinking of you)

My point is there are a lot of people in your corner. I know you are aware of this already but like I said the numbers seem to validate/confirm what we already knew.

These numbers (in my opinion) are the most impressive numbers you've ever had.

Can't wait to see you back home.

Doug and Steph and family, I have been reading the updates frequently and get some of the updates from my wife Anne or Tim Martinson, as well as my 4-year old who makes sure we pray for you at bed-time (we mention different people, and if I fail to mention you by name, he will make sure I do :>). We are amazed by the progress you have made and will continue to pray for you. We will also pray that you will have the patience to take the recovery step by step. The note from Riley was amazing and shows the love you are surrounded with. Good luck in this next chapter!

Dear Doug,
This is my last note to you as we are getting ready to welcome you home. What a pleasure it has been for us to help in this small way of taking care of our beloved Breck and Riley. It has been somewhat of a challenge to attempt to care for them as parents and not grandparents. Hopefully you will find them as well behaved and mindful as you left them. They are truly loving children. We have done our best.
Tilly is at the animal hospital being spayed and declawed. She will spend the night at the hospital. Mr. Schroeder and Riley will go pick her up tonight after school as we will be in Mlps. with Breck to see Sunny. Mrs. Arentz will pick up Riley and take her to Awana. Rita and Ferry lent us their car, as we don't dare take the Nissan.
We are so grateful to the Nevis track team, volleyball girls, Nevis faculty, Hjelseth family, Edwards family, Barry and Kristie, Marlys and Dave, and everyone else that helped rake, clean the yard, do the windows and clean the house. What wonderful people you have as friends.
Your closet material has arrived so Grandpa will start organizing. I think it will truly be a challenge for him. He and Stephanie will enjoy working together for the completed project results.
Have a successful week in therapy so your challenges will become greater and greater. We look forward to your arrival with joy and love in our hearts.

Doug, Steph and family,

Glad to hear the weekend at home went well. I am so glad that you have progressed enough to go home on Friday and return to being a dad full time with your kids.

We have gotten so close to all of you these last 12 weeks (wow that is a long time). When I think back to the first few weeks and see you now - God truly answers prayers and performs miracles. Doug you are so amazing! When we visited with you the other night, with the exception of that fancy chair that you sit in- you are the same Doug that was at NDSU on a track scholarship hanging out between class or a run. You can remember things that happened in track years and years ago, that I can't even remember until you bring it up. We know that when you get home surrounded by the love of your family, friends and community you will progress even further. We love you guys and will miss you! We look forward to visiting you in Nevis!

We will keep you in our prayers!

What wonderful news! We're excited for all of you and will be praying specifically for wisdom for the doctors with the medications, a seamless transition to the new therapists with continued progress forward, the lessening of pain as Doug continues the therapy and for confidence without anxiety or fear for each of you as Doug makes the transition home.

Your updates from last weekend touched our hearts and brought tears to our eyes, as you gave us a glimpse into Doug's visit home with his family. Thank you!

We pray for wisdom and insight for each of you as you continue being a part of the journey to complete recovery for Doug.

Love and Prayers to each of you,

Doug-

It was a great bright spot in our weekend to be able to finally visit with you. The fact that you could hold your own against three Martinson kids (in conversation and humor) is quite impressive. We're very excited about you heading home, and we could tell from our visit that the weekend alone had done you good. (Tim will also enjoy the change of scenery on his visits, I'm sure.) Keep hard at it this week in preparation of the move home - and remember the new slogan - THERAPY: Torture --- with a Purpose. Remember the purpose and we'll remember to hold you up through the torture.

Take care - and watch out for the stainless steel appliances, would you!

kirk and family

p.s. Roger - there are few things I remember as vividly (and with as much disgust) from my very early years in Fargo as the smell of the sugar beet factories. Add your imminent escape from that aroma to the things you have to be grateful for.....

Hello Doug & Family,

I feel as if I have come to know you and your family over these past few months. A prayer request was forwarded to me from Kellie Ronish, Denise's sister-in-law from Denver, and we have been praying ever since for your recovery, as well as for God's strength, peace, and wisdom for your whole family. I check in every couple of days to read the updates so I can pray more specifically for areas of need. It has been so awesome to witness (via the internet) God's healing power!!! And now you are preparing to go home and continue your recovery there. What a miracle! I am sure that God has big plans to continue to use your family for His glory. I will miss the updates via the internet but will continue to hold you all up as the next leg of this journey begins. My own faith has grown as I've read the updates and the daily scriptures! Thanks for letting me be a part of your faith-building experience.

May God continue to bless and care for all of you! I look forward to meeting you someday, probably in heaven!

God Bless You All,

Hope Deschamps & Family

Dear Doug and family,

From the onset of this ordeal you have shown faith, hope, and love. As 1 Corinthians 13 indicates, the cardinal virtues are faith, hope, and love, and the greatest is love.

We know this is true. For example, in heaven, there won't be faith: we will see. There won't be hope: we will have all that's needed. However, there will be love, and love will endure forever.

1 Corinthians 13: 13

And now abideth
faith, hope, charity,
these three;
but the greatest of these
is charity.

1 Corinthians 13:13

God bless your ongoing journey.

In Christian love,
Bob and Jean

Douglas.....Excellent news about your weekend. I know it was a great relief to you and everyone else. I've been flipping though some of the guestbook notes and man your territory sure has been enlarged hasn't it. I guess we need to start calling you Dougbez... ;) I remember you telling me a couple years or so back that you didn't worry about results of business, etc. You said that as long as you were obedient to what the Lord wanted the results where then up to Him. It was probably at about two in the morning on the floor at your mom and dad's place, so I'm sure you don't remember it but it is one of those things that has stuck with me since then. You are coming up to an exciting time but an anxious one as well. Remind yourself that the results aren't up to you.....you just keep being obedient and He will make the results better than you could have even dreamed up. Rest well tonight, your going to have a big day tomorrow.

Karl was here this morning for a visit and I talked to Barb on the phone- between their accounts and Roger's journal entries, we found out how well your weekend went. It sounds as though people stayed away so you could have family time- that helped to keep you, Doug, from feeling whirly and disjointed, too. Visits are good for the soul but they can be tiring, too. Have a good last week in Fargo. We keep you in our hearts and in our prayers every day.

Wow, it was so exciting to hear how well things went this weekend. It had to one joyful sight to see the kids, Barb and Karl all with you again. Also being home in your own setting had to be the most healing of all.
Praying you have a good week.

Doug,

Man, I don't even know what to write here. I am so sorry I haven't gotten back up there. Track has started and time seems to fly by so fast that I barely have time to think. However, the Lord places you on my heart frequently, reminding me that I have a TEAMMATE that is out there, struggling against very tough foes, and I need to lift him up.

Do you remember, Doug, twisting my arm to get me to that FCA retreat at Green Lake Bible Camp in 1988? You KNEW I had to be there. You even paid for part of my way out of the FCA account. Thank you. My relationship with Christ grew at that retreat, and I don't know for sure if I've ever taken the time to thank you for that.

Ray Boltz sings,
"Thank you, for giving to the Lord. I am a life that was changed.
"Thanks you, for giving to the Lord. I am so glad you gave."

You gave of yourself, Doug. And, you patiently listened to all of my excuses for why I was behaving the way I was, but then I think you turned me over to God. He has taken your offering and made me into who I am today, and for that I thank you once again, from the depths of my being.

Now, you enter into another stage of your journey. Remember, He is ALWAYS there to lead and guide you. I know you know this, but keep it always in the forefront of your mind.

God's blessings on you all.

inHim,

Hey Doug,
It's Johnny. Sorry its been so long since we last spoke. We are all still in shock about Timmy! When he called to tell us the good news it sounded like they where planning to have a small ceremony, but I managed to invite the Wilders anyway. Not sure if we'll make it however due to our current finances.
The family is all doing well. Sarah is now 15 mos and truely a gift from God. Sidney is ready for summer and almost as tall as her mom. Carolyn is getting back into photography and still loving homelife with the kids.
I'm still going out to Cali and really miss cathcing up with you on the phone during my drive from Burbank to Ojai. I look forowrd to the day when we can resume such conversations. Sounds like that may not be too far off in the future?
We would love to come visit you guys this summer sometime if at all possible? We'd love to see the house and get re-educated in a game of stink hole, plus Carolyns a great cook and although I'm not nearly the weed-eater you are, I can hold my own.
We continue to pray for you and everyone involved with your care. We are so excited for you at the prospect of coming home soon. Carolyn and I will pray that everyone involved in the decision making process will yeild themselves to the Wisdom of God.
Take Care,
Your Friend Johnny.

doug and steph,

it is so wonderful to hear about your weekend. it is amazing how being in your own enviornment can make such a huge difference in how you feel.

i spent the weekend in ft worth. i thought of you often as i drove past so many things that brought you to my mind. i went to church this morning at ACC. it was just like being home! so many people asked about you both and said to be sure and tell you they are praying for you and cheering you on. i had lunch with janice and lisa. we talked about you steph and that made us think of mijos. they gave me a gift card to starbucks for my birthday...that sure brought back some fun memories. (:>)

there were wild flowers everywhere! it was absolutely breathtaking. such a mix of colors i could not believe and thought, God sure can do some amazing things. again, i thought of you and smiled.

stay tough this week and keep up the great work. we continue to lift you up in prayer as you continue on in your journey.

We are so thankful that the weekend has gone well, especially the two hour ride from Fargo. (guess we shouldn'd be so surprised when God answers our prayers) Just to be away from the hospital and enjoying the surroundings of home and family, has got to be a big boost to the healing process! We are praying now for a smooth ride back, and a great week of therapy.

Our love to you all. Way to go Doug, keep lookin up !!!

Keep your eyes on the goal!!!!
Mens group wed. we were discussing Confidence and taking risks. As I wrote once before David vs. Goliath is such a neat example of how we can and should be confident, in what the Lord can and will do through us.

Even I as an emotional bystander in this situation I have found it difficult to keep my eyes on the Lord, and allow him to fill me with confidence. Much like Peter I had 100% confidence that the Lord would heal you completely, when your accident happended. After seeing you in ICU, I took my eyes off the Lord and focused on human rational, much like peter I walked on water in confidence, then sank in human understanding. Day after day of your successful recovery has brought me back the surface and helped me put my eyes back on God.

I see a great possiblilty of you walking on top of the water on good days and partially submerged on bad days remeber praise the Lord and keep you eyes on him in the good days and the bad. Had
Peter kept his eyes on the Lord when the water go rough, he would have accompolished great things, greater things.

I expect the Lord has great things planned for you, Keep your eyes on him ultimately through this entire experience, but also each day, good ones and bad ones.

I know this is something you never foresaw happening, and just as I've know you to be a man of great personal strength, you have risen to the challenge and sought Gods strength and mercy to see you through. Keep pressing forward and know that you're thought of often and we're praying for continued progress and strength!

Doug-
We are so pleased to see that you are finally able to have a visit home. We are picturing you right now in front of the beautiful scenery surrounding your house. It is hard to imagine that the view alone will not help bring you some peace. On a daily basis, we are amazed and inspired by your progress. We continue to pray for your recovery and hold your family in our thoughts. I need to go now to get some extra training in before Grandma's so I can see Tom's cute butt for a little bit longer during the first part of the race - at least I won't be chasing a fish's tail.

Doug and Step and all Good advice to everyone I know from experience it is better for just family Husband Wife and children to try and visit at least the first day. It will be a big adjustment just for Doug to be home. I know all the Moms and Dads could be on call for help. We had a few visitors and it was to much. The next time we went home it was just us and it went so much better. Everyone will understand. It wont be long and Doug will be home for good so the visits can be saved till then.Steph I will be praying for strength for you. Do not get discouraged if things dont go perfect. They will in Gods time. We Love You All and can hardly wait for Doug to see home again. It was 3 and one half months before Larrys first visit home and after that I think he realized he had a lot to get to work for. We Love You Aunt Joyce and Uncle Larry

Good afternoon Roger, Sharon, Doug, Steph and all,
It seems like we have come to know your family better through this website. We are so happy to hear of the progress Doug has made and will be making in the days ahead. Our prayers will continue for Doug and all the family as well for continued strength for each day. It is our hope and prayer that Doug will feel a sense of calmness when he arrives home this week-end. There is no place like home and it sounds like Doug and Steph have a beautiful home near a lake.
It was so great to see Darla last night at Awanas in West Concord and to give her a big hug and she was so grateful for all the prayers. She spoke to some of the Awana kids and told about her work in the cities, which was very interesting.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with each one of you now and in the coming days. We spent Easter with Roxie and the boys in Little Rock, AR and at the close of their worship service we sang the song "Becuase He Lives". That is such a touching song and I know that Doug can face tomorrow not only because of all the prayers of family and friends, but mostly because HE LIVES....
May you all have a great week-end and enjoy the time at home. Love and hugs to all of you. Doug - don't give up - you will make it....

Hello All,

I'm so sad to read of your bad start to the day Doug. I was sitting out by the lake earlier (it's a beautiful MN day) and found myself remembering all the times you were over to help us with stuff around the lake and yard or starting/finishing a run. Everyday things. I was thinking about some of the phone conversations we had - usually while trying to track down Tom for you!! - and how I would almost always feel more "up" even after the shortest call. Or times when Steph and I would crack up when one of us could predict what you or Tom would do because you two can be so alike. It's hard to believe that we've only known you guys for a couple of years. Quality, not quantity.

We'll be sending good vibes across the lake all weekend for you. Tom has been plotting how he can turn you into a fisherman this summer so beware!! I hope your day gets better - if not, then I hope it goes by fast. Hang in there.

Hey Big Fella,
Sorry to hear about your rough morning. This healing by osmosis thing just isn't cutting for me. I am going to have to try a different approach. We all wish we could do anything to make it better for you. Just remember the people God has surrounded you with are there for a reason. He has surrounded you with tremendous people. They are doing the best they can to make your day go as smoothly as possible. When you are down, try to draft off their energy and use it to your advantage. I know somedays are hard. Just know that we are all praying for you. Hoping that your pain will subside, your muscles will relax, your stomach will feel better, and things will become easier for you. This "No Pain No Gain" thing stinks to put it nicely. I know you hear that you are doing better from everyone but realize that when I was there last weekend, it was the first time I came home and told Steph "He is going to walk again." You gave me a great confidence booster last weekend. I truly mean it when I say "You are doing Great". Not only physically but mentally. We don't even realize the focus it takes to do the little things you do. You handle yourself so well that we don't even realize how much focus and energy it takes. As you go through the ups and downs just hang on to the fact that God is with you, your family is with you, and the medical staff is with you. Hang in there big fella. Keep on truckin.

Doug,

Thanks for the continued effort that you have been giving day after day. It is what I would of expected from you. I'm not going to pretend that I know what you are going through - because I don't. However, I will say that I would be suprised of any effort less than your best. Anything short of that is simply not your style. In short- Your effort and determination is truly impressive, appreciated and is not going unnoticed. Keep doing what your doing because it's working.

Hey Doug and family,
Daily Jeff and I look forward to reading the updates and several times a day we uphold you in prayer. Caringbridge is such a wonderful tool for everyone to be able to pray for specific requests. This constant pain can really wear on a person physically, mentally and emotionally. For three years I went through what is a mere drop in the ocean compared to your pain but non the less I would get discouraged, depressed, and angry. But Jeff was always there encouraging me and supporting me. You have a wonderful support system of family and friends. Don't ever be hesitant to tell us how you feel and how anyone of us can help. I have a website for you to check out and discuss with your medical staff to see if this might be a possible treatment for the shoulder pain. I developed bilateral tendonitis when I was working in the machine shop and after endless physical therapy, ultra sound, braces, Celebrex RX, and cortisone shots I still had chronic pain. After moving to AZ I found a wonderful doctor who recommended Sonorex treatments. I can go days without pain and I am practically normal (well I'm sure your Uncle Phil would have comment for that) again, I just know my limitations when using my arms. Then Jeff injured one of his arms and he did the Sonorex and had great results also. The pain during the treatment isn't a cake walk but the end results sure are worth it. The site to check out is http://www.sonorex.com/world/index.html. Also I have some co-workers that check with me daily while at work and one of them asked about water therapy. Suzette is native Arizonan and she asked me if we had indoor swimming pools in MN...I told her yes, that we even had flush toilets! We got a laugh out of that. Her elderly father is confined to a wheelchair but he does water therapy and wears his tennis shoes in the water and he is able to walk in the water. So Suzette was wondering if that was something that you could do. Doug, keep looking UP. I admire you and look forward to seeing you in August when we will be in Nevis. Julann and Jeff

Doug, Steph and family,

Hard to believe we have all (Doug) come this far, and with looking at Doug going home soon. It is truly a miracle! Track: (NDSU) and our 7th grader daughter Kelsey running for Fargo North has kept us very busy. It has been hard to not be able to visit you guys everyday like we had in the beginning. Don said he did get to see you before they left for the Drake Relays. Know that even if we do not see you as much- you are all still in our thoughts and prayers and we keep connected with this website. speaking of the Drake Relays, I remember, Doug watching you run there- your strength has always amazed me and continues to as I read about your therapy. I am so excited that you will get a chance to get a weekend pass to go home. We love you guys and are so glad you are a part of our lives! Keep working Doug, great things are never easy- but then you already know that! Have a great weekend, we pray you have a wonderful weekend away!

Doug -and all your family,
We check your web site daily and praise God for His mighty power at work in you and your family. Please remember that when you have a day that doesn't go as you would have liked, that doesn't mean it isn't a "good day." God is simply working in other areas that you are not aware of. Someday we'll learn all about what was behind those frustrating times.

But now . . . the big trip home! We will be praying for you with that in mind for the weekend. This verse keeps coming to me as I prayed for you this morning -from Deut. 31:8: "The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Isn't that amazing about our incredible God? He's there with you every step of the way and he'll be waiting for you when you get home! He's already there!

As I went to Deut. this AM, another verse jumped out at me that the Lord gave to me several years ago when my body wasn't doing what I wanted it to do. This one is in chapter 33, vs. 12: "Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders." Now as the kids would say "how cool is that?!" We can get a "piggy-back" ride from the Lord whenever we need it - and even when we don't know that we need it!

We love you and your family and keep you in our prayers -John, Marilyn & Anne

GO DOUG GO!! Hey man, it is great to see your progress daily and to hear you are getting to go back home for a few days. The kids and I talked to Riley and wished her a Happy Birthday, I know that she is looking forward to getting her present of you home this weekend. This is a big step, but a great one and I know that God will carry you through. When you get a little anxious, just close your eyes and focus on Jesus because He will be with you every step as you pick up your cross and carry it to Nevis, and when you become weary He will carry it for you, just as He has been. I am looking forward already for the exciting updates about the weekend. I also thought that if you were up to it, I would drive Tanya's car up for the weekend so you can help me change out the CV joints and axles. Let me know if you are up for it. I LOVE YOU MAN!! YOUR DOING GREAT AND I KNOW YOU WILL BE BACK RUNNING WITH TOM AND PAUL SOON. Talk to you soon. Archie

Doug, Steph, Roger & Sharon:

It has been a few days since I've been on the website as we have spent time with Josh in the hospital as he had gall bladder surgery on Monday. He is back home and doing well and feeling pain just like you, Doug. He can definitely sympathize with you!

It was so exciting to read of your weekend out of the hospital last Saturday and Sunday!! What a precious time for all of you!!

Doug, we were so pleased to read your update! Thanks so much!! You are a real trooper - even through the pain. We know you are making great strides daily and know you will continue as you get home and can relax even more in your own surroundings!

Happy Birthday, Riley! That was so awesome that your Mom got to come home for your party! I wish we could celebrate with you!

We continue to pray for peace for the weekend for all of you and the ability to relax and enjoy your time together. God will give you the strength and patience for each moment.

We love you all!

It's been awhile ... sorry. I thought it would be approbiate to write you beofre I headed to the Drake Relays with the high school team I coach. It was some 12 years ago when I met Lars at the Drake Relays for the second time. The first was your wedding that you didn't think I come to. Anyway, after talking to Lars and taking the tests, I was at NDSU 4 months later in Grad. School. I will see Ryun, the athlete I coached, who is now the women head cc/track coach ... and all that is traced back to you and our AIA trip. Remember those "weekend passes" ... George with a map to nowhere or Mel our second mother. Good memories.
I check the website, pray everyday and thank God for bringing you into my life. If it was for you, God's gift to me, I know I would not be the same person I today.
Anything you need, anytime, anyplace ... it's only 10 hours away ... you name - it's yours.
Much Love and God Bless

Well, Doug- you will soon be home for the weekend and away from the hospital- brace yourself, kid. It will be wonderful but it will also be unnerving- you will have moments when you will think you have been spinning around and around and are now dizzy. Get ready for that feeling- it is the craziest thing- the world seems to be moving so much faster than it does in a hospital setting. But by and large, it is sweet to be on home territory; when the "spinning" takes over, a quick nap helps. It was so fun to read a journal entry from you (a break for your ever faithful dad- we are all so grateful for his many messages to us) and then to read that Steph had gone home for a few hours- We hope your time at home will be pleasant and a blessing for all of you.

Hi Doug,
It's nice to continue to hear good news and encouragement. I think of all of you daily and keep you in my prayers each night. Riley is a very special girl - we have the same birthday (and it was a lovely day)! I pray that the familiar surroundings of home will bring comfort to you. Susan shared the pictures from the APW visit. It was so nice to see you! You're winning the race - keep it up.
Blessings, Lisa

Doug...sorry about the pain man.....don't complain too much or I'll send my "big sister" Lynda up there to work you over like you were 10 again... ;) I can't wait to share your progress with my AWANA class tonight. They faithfully ask about you every week. It won't be long and you'll be outta that place and home. I figure a man who can e-mail is about ready to roll. Over Easter we were talking about your place in July, if your game we're all in. Chris hopes you and Riley are up to kayaking again...well as long as we keep it right side up that is. Hi Doug! How exciting that you may be able to go home soon! It has been so encouraging to read about all of the FUN you have everyday in physical and speech therapy. I work at Lifetrack Resources in the Employment Division and our other division is Rehab Therapy. (That's how are agency started some 50 years ago.) So I have been learning through your updates everyday about what the staff at our agency do! Actually in May I am going to Bethesda Rehab Hospital, where many of our staff are located, and they are giving a tour and will have us go through several stations so that we can understand all of the different things involved with Speech Therapy. I hear that Chad may have a competitor at the Grandma's Marathon??? Darla mentioned that you and Roger may be involved in a race of some sort! Chad keeps training, but we'll see if he goes through with it. He is going to run a half marathon in May and we will see how that goes! =) Guess What??? Bretta is coming home in May! So it will be fun to hear about all of her crazy adventures. Well, we love you and miss you. Keep up the good work! =)

Hello Doug,
You don't know me, but I worked with Karl at Park Rapids in the music department. I've been following your progress and have been praying for your recovery. I just wanted you to know I've been doing some research about the positive effects of music on the brain, and I'm wondering if your therapists have been using music as part of your therapy. I've learned that just listening to Classical or other soothing types of music can increase the dendrite connections in the brain. Certain types of music have also been proven to help stimulate memory and taste. It also can have a relaxing effect and help even out emotions. If you are actually making the music yourself, such as singing or playing an instrument, connections between the two hemispheres are created. When I read this information, I thought about you.

Excellent news about the weekend!!!!! Doug and Steph the Lord gave me a little revelation yesterday to pass along. I am going to pray for a little more pain. I know it sounds terrible but He keeps reminding me that preparation and growth come through pain. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spriritually we make our greatest strides in the face of adversity and in the midsts of trials. As athletes you both know that races and games aren't won the day of the event.....they are won through the long hours of pain and practice. Doug right now you are working on your conditioning and you just had your first speed work-out this weekend. Soon your mileage will increase (but not too much too soon) then you'll schedule regular speed work. You've got a little bit before you'll be in shape to race but it is coming. Pain is the facilitator of growth. The Lord will only allow you to have what you can take....I've gotta ask for the max for you. Maximum trial equals Maximum benefit. This a huge week coming up. I pray that you rested well last night and for your sleep every night.

So exciting to hear that the weekend went well. What a milestone - and to celebrate Riley's birthday - what a treat!
As I was running today I said a prayer - the wind here was VERY strong and I ran a square - 1 mile into the wind, 1 mile with the wind at my side, 1 mile with the wind at my back, and then 1 mile with it at my side. As I was heading into the wind, I was imagining that this is nothing compared to the weeks you've been having - but I have to admit, it was hard work. It helped with the wind at my side, but when I turned and it was at my back (even as I ran up hill) those minutes of cursing the wind turned into a breathe of fresh air. It was like someone was pushing me that entire mile.
My prayer for you this week is that the wind may push you through this week and when the week is done you will look back and be amazed at where it has taken you. After heading into the wind for so long, it would be nice to have it at your back for a time!
Have a great week!

We were so happy to see the good report on the overnight! Yet another amazing step you've made, Doug (and family)! Keep thinking positively and know that on the days that this seems impossible you are not alone. God is always with you and the thoughts and prayers of all us are as well. Our son took part in a concert at Orchestra Hall tonight celebrating Nobel Peace Prize winners. A quote from Mother Teresa has stuck with me all night - "Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, and once we begin to love each other, naturally we want to do something." I've thought about all the comments about your sense of humor and how you've made everyone around you smile. What a gift you have been to others so now it's your turn to accept smiles from all those who care about you! :-)

awesome ways! Bless the Lord for Doug's continued progress!
We can continue to speak God's word for Doug and your family each day. God tells us to speak His word back to

our personal relationship and forever friendship with Him.
We are thinking of Psalm 8 for Doug's rest during the night.

there is power and life in God's written and spoken word.

The LORD lives!
Blessed be the Rock
Let the God of our salvation be exalted.

Dear Friends
As we witness your lives and your obedience to our Lord, know that His name is being exalted among many! As I awoke today, your faces were in my mind and on my heart. Ken and I think, speak and pray for you often as you live out this season of your lives guided and directed by the mighty counsels of our Lord in all wisdom. I can only imagine the peaks and valleys of emotion you all have experienced and the physical exhaustion that comes as you wait to see what each day will bring. As we have been reading some days are surely more difficult than others. My brother-in-law was in the hospital in Michigan for seven months last year after falling off his roof onto a concrete patio. My sister stayed in an apartment as the hospital was not close to their home either and in speaking with her often i know some of the frustrations that can be encountered. But I know you agree that God never tires and sends comfort as he demonstrates His faithfulness to us over and over again.

Last weekend Ken and I were in West Concord as both boys had plans with the other families. We stayed with Gossards and were able to visit with lots of people as we had been invited to a couple of special celebrations. Carmen and Todd Livinggood had a fun Open House celebrating Todd's 40th birthday, a birthday they in the past wondered whether he would ever celebrate because of two open heart surgeries and didfficult recoveries. But now he is the picture of health and the father of three beautiful children and reflecting God's glory in all facets of his life. Then we were able to attend a communion service Saturday night in a private home of some special friends. There we heard personal testimony in praise of God that His search and rescue mission was finally accomplished on one of his lost sheep in the midst of terrible circumstances. We wait now in anticipation of how the Lord will bring glory to Himself as this new life in Him flourishes and grows.

Finally on Sunday morning we had the best Easter celebration possible! Where? At Faith Community Chruch! God was there in power as we celebrated His resurrection and the new work He is doing in West Concord through His faiithful believers and prayer warriors. How exciting to meet with church family and see resurrection life flowing through each one as they embraced old and new worshippers alike. We could see God active in each part of the morning from Sunday School to Fellowship to Worship Services, PTL! We were so asolutely blessed and our hearts warmed to be in the presence of our resurrected Lord. He is bringing in a harvest reminicent of our own personal experience years ago when you guys were part of the flock that embraced us with God's unmatchless love.

Your messages via Caring Tree are always hopeful and it's evident that Jesus is carrying you through these difficult times. But I don't underestimate the battles for a minute that are continually being placed in your path. So after praising the lord we call on his mighty and powerful authority to defeat the weaknesses of the flesh and the devices and schemes of Satan during every step of Doug's recovery. In addition we pray that those with whom you come in contact with will see the glory of your God that is reflected in all of you: His promissed portion in spite of our weakness. We love you and remain part of the chorus that intercedes in order that God's love may be magnified through all the phases of Doug's return to complete health. Doug you are so courageous to accept the pain of therapy and persevere through all these challenges. We know it is a small demonstration of the great love you have for your family and your desire to return home and be with them. Praying that this weekend out was a joy and Happy Birthday Riley!! Are you signed up for Camp yet?

Good evening to the Fargo family;

How exciting (and scary) for Doug to be spending the night outside of the hospital !! We are specifically praying tonight that it will go well for all of you. What a miracle when you concider where Doug was just two months ago.

This verse from Prov 3 comes to mind tonight: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.

We know that you are acknowledging Him, so we have confidence that He will keep your paths strainght!

Doug; remember that we have a date to go out for a run one of these days. We should really do it before you get back to full speed, otherwise I will be wondering which way you went!

We will be anxious to get back up there and see you all again. Our love to you all !

Dear Hanson's~ So good to hear of Doug's progress & we continue to pray as you give us directives for what is needed for the day. Last nite at Bible Study/Prayer Mtg we heard Pastor say several times "when God guides, God provides. We were talking about folks with physical, mental and spiritual needs as well as our church building program. I was relating it to Doug, and all of you as you work with him & try to figure out what is best. We have witnessed through the updates how you rely on God to guide you and how he has provided. Dear Hansons, Just want you to know that I am praying for the steps that lie ahead, as you make plans for the future...I know that the unknown and the transition from a hospital setting can be fearful...Here a few verses that prove that God will go with you and lead you...Ps.32:8--I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye. and Prov.3:6 Lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.
Also, the following vs. was one that I prayed often over myself and Dan after his accident..."For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of POWER,and of LOVE and of a SOUND MIND. 2Tim.1:7

When Doug was having so much trouble sleeping a couple of weeks ago, I kept thinking of a verse in Psalms, "In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for Thou alone, Lord, maketh me to dwell in safety." (version in the Bible I have) Anyway, I didn't want to send it until I found it and so I searched the Psalms and found it in Psalms 4--what really surprised me was that I had noted beside it, "January, 1976" Now I have no idea what was troubling me in 1976--all I know was that whatever it was, I found comfort--and here we are all these years later still searching and still finding the help that we need. What an awesome God!! It is such a joy to hear of the progress you are making, Doug, and to know that this precious God we serve is working each day with and for us all--supplying our needs as we journey. May God bless and be with you and your family. Elna Watts

Your telephone call last night blew me away. "Hey Paul- this is Doug" along with the conversation that followed made my evening and is with me still today as I am writing you. I know you've got a long haul ahead of you but your voice and conversation on the phone had me thinking of pre-accident phone calls- "Hey Paul- this is Doug- you want to go for a run?" I don't want my e-mail to get you down- quite the opposite- I hope it keeps the fire burning inside for you and helps you focus at your task at hand.
I'm convinced that those days and phone calls will return with your amazing determination, will, and faith. I can't tell you how much I look forward to helping you with your physical comeback when you return.
The mental return I'im not as worried about because we are probably a little closer now than before. (That last part was supposed to be a joke).

Douglas I hear they had you take the left shoe off and try it barefoot. It reminded me of running barefoot from the orchard across your mom and dad's front yard full speed...then tip-toeing across the driveway and then back to full speed behind the barn (oh the barn) and then down to the stream(or crick as they call it down here). As I look at your picture from the newspaper article hanging in front of my desk I know you will be running like that again. The Lord wants us to come to Him as little children. You've been taken back to that and He is accepting your every move joyfully.

Hey, try some hot sauce on things and maybe even some salsa. I don't care whether you liked it before or not it may help the taste buds. After Regan's chemo she went through the same thing. She had never eaten salsa before but tried it when everything else tasted bad and it tasted good to her. We put some hot sauce on some of her other food and she started eating more. A week or so later and her taste buds were back to normal. May want to give it a shot.

Keep hangin tough man.

Doug,
Pam and I are keeping you in our prayers. Remember, we serve a Lord who can bring showers of blessings out of storms of adversity. Take a look at Psalms 40:1-3, we hope it will be an encouragement to you.

Hey Doug,

Just checking on you today and am totally in awe of the progress that you have made. What an awesome God we serve. You are so blessed to have such a caring family supporting you during this time. Their endurance and strength surely must come from God. I was reading about your "Pain" saying and it reminded me of what a friend once told me that "Pain is just weakness leaving the body". So I see your pain as strength entering your body and building it back. I rejoice in your continued progress and give God all the glory. There's no way to keep The Incredible Mr. Limpet down!

Doug, Stephanie and family,
You have been such an inspiration to me! I worked with you only on 1 or 2 projects with APW (I provided transportation quotes), but your accident just hit so close to home for me, my brother is a snowmobiler in MN. I have recently moved on from APW, but still check your website for progress. I pray for you and your family often, and know that you will recover completely. Your family and faith are truly an example for us to learn from and follow! May God guide and comfort you through this journey.

DearHanson Crew,
We too in this house are praying for a good night's sleep. Espen and Siri are struggling to both sleep well on the same night and I am struggling to be patient when they don't. It feels a lot like we take two steps forward and then one step back before we can move forward again. It seems that is sometimes true in Doug's recovery too. The work he is doing know is harder than most of us can quite imagine. We can only offer words of encouragement. So, Go Doug Go - Espen would probably say to that "Go Dog Go??" Keep working, you will continue to make steps forward. As long as there are more steps forward than back, you're heading in the right direction.

WOW - a trip in the car! I hope it was a sunny day! Regardless, what an event to take a ride to NDSU! I bet they were excited to see him!
Sorry to hear about the taste buds and appetite. I bet that makes it hard to put on weight!(Something most of us have no problem with. Isn't life ironic at times?!)
We had a nice visit with Tim yesterday and he updated us on his last two visits - too bad this weekend's was cut short. We all are looking forward to the wedding and especially look forward to you - Doug and Steph - being a part of that big day. I think among other things, this time has taught Tim (and many of the rest of us) what the road of marriage is all about. Steph - however you are holding on - your endurance has been a witness to the power of marriage - in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. Many days it is you whom I have felt the need to lift up in my prayers.
Well - great to hear about the car ride and we will keep praying for lifted spirits and a healthy appetite.
God's Blessings.

doug and steph,

archie and i so enjoyed talking to you yesterday. easter will always be tied so closely to wonderful memories of our times together in FTW. yes, doug, i am about to climb the walls....we are STILL missing one of philip's eggs!

we just returned from travis' baseball game. he played awesome, but we are frozen. it is 44 degrees and the wind is howling...i kept reminding myself that it was a baseball game not a football game!

doug, you will be glad to know that travis ran his mile for the presidents' award in 6 minutes and 45 seconds. the kids are using you as an inspiration. we talked to them about digging deep within to accomplish their goals and your journey is showing them that example. please know that we are cheering you on and so excited by your progress.

praying that this week is full of "joy rides" for you both.

Dear Ones:

We went to early service this morning as a family and had a wonderful time of worship, praise and thanksgiving as we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the results of the sacrifice for each one of us. The main points of the sermon today were the following:

Jesus came to remove your fears.
Jesus came to rebuild your faith.
Jesus came to redirect your future.

Jeremiah 29:12
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

This verse means a lot to me and as we thought of you, we know God has a plan with a hope and a future for you.

Happy Easter!!

We love you and miss you.

There once was a man named George Thomas, a pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage and set it by the pulpit. Several eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak.

"I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What you got there son?"

"Just some old birds," came the reply.

"What are you gonna do with them?" I asked.

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."

"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?"

"Oh, I got some cats," said the little boy. "They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."

The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"

"Huh??!!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing -- they ain't even pretty!"

"How much?" the pastor asked again.

The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?"

The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone.

The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

"One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting.

"Yes, sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got' em all!

"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.

Satan replied, "Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!"

"And what will you do when you get done with them?" Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly.

"How much do you want for them?" Jesus asked.

"Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them, and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you!! You don't want those people!!"

"How much?" He asked again.

Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your tears, and all your blood."

Jesus said, "DONE!"

Then He paid the price.

The pastor picked up the cage, and he walked from the pulpit.

Dear Stephanie,
I had missed your April 7th insert...and just read it and was so touched! This morning You were in my thoughts and I wanted to share with you Proverbs 31, mostly verses--25-30
"Strength and honor are her clothing; she will rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: " Many daughers have done well, but you excel them all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised."

May the Lord continue to strengthen you...Doug is so blessed to have you by his side! You are in my thoughts and prayers often! I am believing that "you will rejoice in time to come(vs.25)" Bless you!
May you all have a blessed Easter...Rejoicing in all that Jesus has done for us!
