Please follow us!
Thanks,
Tony
Friday, November 10, 2006 11:04 PM CST Cindy got a call tonight that Abby was in the ER at Vanderbilt tonight. We are sad that Abby was there, but felt blessed that we talked to her mom BJ and we were able to go see Abby tonight. In fact, we all went. They let Michael, Caroline, William, Cindy and me in to see her. Abby kept asking about Michael, not concerned about herself.
Michael and Abby have magic(miracle) written on their faces when they are together. Michael gave Abby a couple of kisses and "high fives". It was painful, but fulfilling to watch.
Pray for her family tonight.
Tony
Monday, November 6, 2006 9:20 PM CST Michael's eye surgery went well. Both eyes are VERY red(bloody), but I think the pain is manageable. He will sleep with me tonight to be sure no rubbing his eyes. Critical since he has stitches in his eyes.
I know it's sounds wierd, but Sunday a blood vessel popped in my eye and I have a VERY red eye(bloody ugly). I think the fact that Dad's eye looked red soothed him.
Tony
Friday, November 3, 2006 9:12 PM CST Michael has some minor eye surgery scheduled for Monday. This was originally scheduled for early 2005 before we discovered Michael's Cancer. Since he is doing well, they want to proceed. It's outpatient, and seems so minor compared to what he has been through. However, we'll continue to take prayers that Michael continues to be so strong with everything he faces.
Tony
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 9:32 PM CST We had a great time tonight. I want to say it was my best Halloween ever, and I felt it was. However, I look back on my comments from a year ago and thought I would share those comments from a year ago.
-----Oct 31, 2005 - I had the best Halloween I've ever had! We started at our neighbors. They had this "Pumpkin Man" that Michael insisted on taking with us the rest of the night. Fortunately, the neighbors let us take it. Their daughters were dressed very appropriately for the occasion. Then we went to a few other houses that were expecting us. All 3 children had a great time, but what a treat for MICHAEL. Tonight was their night. We took pictures and I will get them on the website ASAP. Tony-----
Ditto that again as far as fun tonight.
Tony
Sunday, October 29, 2006 8:39 PM CST I took Caroline to the Titans game today. The boys stayed with Mom. Caroline and I had a wonderful time today together. Yes, I paid too much for a few things!
William has a bad ear infection. He rarely complains. He went to the doctor. He is burning(fever) up as we speak. So I have to go. However, things are going well for us. Please pray for Abby and Barret.
Tony
Tuesday, October 17, 2006 7:20 PM CDT NEW PICTURES ON THIS SITE. I can only place three on this website. So here are a few memorable photos since he has completed his treatments.
Not complete yet, but we are in the final stages of establising the "Michael Stanley Child Life Fund" at Vanderbilt. I do think we are far along enough to at least mention it. More news on how you can help coming soon. If you cannot wait to understand how important Child Life is to patients and to Michael, you can visit Vanderbilt Childrens Website at Vanderbiltchildrens.com and go to Family Resources, and then Child Life. It significanly impacted our lives during difficult times.
Tuesday, October 10, 2006 12:29 AM CDT Michael's CT Scan was clear. YEA! He'll have another one in 3 months.
Monday, October 9, 2006 8:31 PM CDT No news tonight on Michael's CT Scan, other than they did not have to put him to sleep for the scan(good).
Per MD, I will be off crutches by the end of the week, and I cannot wait to help Cindy more around the house. "She made me say that!".
Tony
Sunday, October 8, 2006 9:15 PM CDT We had a great weekend in Atlanta together with all of my family. I'm one of five children. All five were there, along with my 80 year old Dad(he looked great and drove there from Myrtle Beach), and my Mom(She looked great, but I'll never reveal age). There were also seven grandchildren there. What a special weekend for Michael, ME, and the rest.
Michael has his CT Scan tomorrow. We expect the best news, but will always have to be prepared for other.
Please continue to pray for Abby and Barret and visit their websites below.
Tony
Tuesday, October 3, 2006 8:52 PM CDT I was a little distracted last night because of my concerns for Barret and Abby. I told you Oct 7th for Michael's CT scan. It will actually be Monday, Oct 9th.
Michael wants you to check Barret and Abby's website tonight. Please leave them a nice message.
Tony
Monday, October 2, 2006 9:44 PM CDT Michael is doing well. He has a periodic CT Scan scheduled for 10/07. Please pray for him, but more importantly Abby and Barret. Please visit their websites listed below. They need your prayers.
Tony
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 8:56 PM CDT Cindy and I meet with Vanderbilt Children's in the morning. I'm really excited to see how we can help families in need when their child is sick. I know first hand the need is there.
The children in my house are doing great tonight.! Tony
Sunday, September 24, 2006 8:51 PM CDT Michael is much better. William has had bronchitis and some other things this week also. All are better tonight. Nine weeks and counting on crutches for me.
Cindy and I are meeting with Vanderbilt this week to see how we can help other people in Michael's honor. Stay tuned. I hope all of you folks that read this website will be a part of it.
Tony
Monday, September 18, 2006 9:40 PM CDT Michael has a fever and is on antibiotics tonight. I know(hope) it’s just a normal infection(cold), but it hurts to see him feeling poorly after what he has been through. He is missing school.
Tony
Monday, September 11, 2006 7:30 PM CDT I went to my doctor after 7 weeks and told him my plan for the crutches as mentioned in my last journal. He said, "It would not be a good idea to run them over with your car. You need them for at least another 4 weeks." Although a little disappointed, I'll keep my crutches for now and my doctor better be glad he was on the 10th floor and not in the car garage I left.
On September 11, 2001 I easily remember where I was when our country was "ATTACKED". I also know where I immediately went once I heard the news. I headed home to be with my family. The reality is there was nothing I could do to protect them, but I had to be near them. I have deep pain for the folks who lost loved ones on that day, and for the ones who continue to lose family to protect this great country we live in. I appreciate those serving to protect it. It's not perfect but if you have doubts of how fortunate you are, go experiment outside its borders. Isn't it great that you are free to leave, and free to return? "My Home Sweet Home".
Michael is doing great. We elected to keep him out of school today because of a cold and we did not want him to get too exhausted and make it worse. He seems fine and rested tonight.
Tony
Tuesday, September 5, 2006 6:39 PM CDT For the first time since April 2005, ALL THREE children were back in school today. What a miracle! Michael did great! He woke up this morning at 6:00AM, well ahead of when I really wanted to get up. He went into the den while I was getting dressed. I could hear him all the way across the house chanting, "I'm going to school today...I'm going to school today" over and over again. Based on his teachers and the fact that he is already talking about tomorrow, he had a great day.
I've been on crutches for 6 weeks and I hope to be done with them in a week or two. My current plan is to run over them again and again with my car.
Tony
Saturday, August 26, 2006 10:19 PM CDT So many days in the past 18 months, I've had no trouble telling you the difficult times we were going through. It's kind of odd that I have difficulty finding the time to share with you the great times we are having with Michael right now. We are so blessed right now. He's doing great.
I know you folks that have followed this website and been through our pain deserve to hear good news. Please just be assured we are enjoying every moment right now.
Michael’s smile will still steal your heart. I need to post some new pictures. I was reminded tonight that it is because of your prayers that Michael is still with us.
Tony!
Sunday, August 20, 2006 6:21 PM CDT Michael is still doing great. He is playing with the other two children, and also getting into trouble with the other two children. The only thing we(me) can complain about right not is that he is an early riser(sp).
I've been on cruthches for 4 weeks and been unable to place weight on my leg. I have at least 3 more weeks to go with no weight on leg. Cindy is still here, yea.
I say once again to hang in with us on the website for a few more weeks. I have plans for us to develop a way to help other folks in Michael's honor and to share these plans with you, but I need to focus on learning to walk again after my surgery right now.
Be sure to check Abby's website, and Barett's website.
Tony
Thursday, August 10, 2006 6:35 PM CDT Michael is still doing really well. It will not be long before all three are back in school.
Cindy has been driving me everywhere I need to go since I cannot drive, and I sense she is getting tired of me being the 4th child. I have only worked 1/2 days this week, but hope to be back to 90 to 100 percent by next week as far as work is concerned.
Tony
Monday, August 7, 2006 7:27 PM CDT Michael is doing great and all three children a being very helpful in assisting Cindy and taking care of me while I am recovering from my surgery. It's been two weeks and I am now feeling somewhat better. It took some time and still a long recovery ahead. I cannot drive.
Back to Michael. Many of you may not have realized it because of his age. However, Michael was not "potty" trained, and we did not force it during his illness. He is now going to the potty. Also as far a sleeping at night, he is out of oure room and sleeping in a room with William. This is huge! He handled both of these challenges with ease.
Pray for Abby and the rest!
Tony
Sunday, July 30, 2006 7:32 PM CDT Michael has had a good week.
My surgery was Monday, and I underestimated the pain expectations of the knee repair(OATS) and the Osteotomy(metal wedge placed in Tibia)
Gotta go.
Tony
Thursday, July 20, 2006 8:59 PM CDT Michael's "port" is out. He did great during surgery. MANY friends/MDs/nurses from all over the hospital dropped by to see Michael.
We brought the "port" home in a cup. Michael's played with it OUTSIDE his body all day.
Tony
Wednesday, July 19, 2006 10:35 PM CDT It's very easy to forget the difficult times when things are going so well. Sort of. Please pray for Abby, Barret, and the rest.
We will enjoy our times right now, and we will go to bed praying for others.
Please stay tuned a little longer.
Tony
Tuesday, July 18, 2006 7:29 PM CDT Michael's port gets removed on Thursday. I will report afterwards. He is doing great otherwise.
Pray for Abby!
Tony
Sunday, July 16, 2006 8:02 AM CDT Cindy and I head home today at 12:15. We can't wait to see Michael, William, and Caroline.
The babysitter locked everyone out of the house yesterday, and had to call a locksmith to get back in. If I had not done it before myself, I'd be naming names. Ha Ha.
Tony
Friday, July 14, 2006 1:09 PM CDT Cindy and I are in Ft. Lauderdale. We are enjoying the relaxation. In fact, I just had a massage, facial, and a pedicure. I may have to change the spelling of my name to Toni from Tony.
Michael and the other kids are doing great we hear. We sure miss them.
TonY
Monday, July 10, 2006 7:19 PM CDT I’ll have major anxiety attacks before every test going forward for Michael, but today his CT Scan came back ALL CLEAR.
Cindy and I are going to Florida alone on Thursday!
Michael’s gets his “port” taken out on the 20th of July (Almost exactly one year after his surgery July 21st, 2005)
Since we are in the clear for now, I’m proceeding with major knee surgery on July 24th. I will be on crutches for 8 weeks and unable to drive.
How do I keep from going crazy?
“I raise my hands, bow my head I’m finding more and more truth in The words written in red They tell me that there’s more to Life than just what I can see Oh, I believe” (Chorus in a song by Ronnie Dunn.)
Tony
Tuesday, July 4, 2006 7:54 AM CDT Happy July 4th. Special thanks to those serving in our armed forces. Michael is doing really well.
CT Scan is scheduled for July 10th.
If all goes well, Cindy and I are going to get away together and go to Ft. Lauderdale alone July 13th.
They will remove the "port" in Michael's chest on July 20th.
Have a great day.
Tony
Wednesday, June 28, 2006 9:29 PM CDT Michael went to his normal pediatrician today and got his 5 year old shots so he would be up to date should he be able to go to school this fall.
It was good to have a normal MD visit.
Please check Abby, Barret, and other children's websites we have been following.
Tony
Monday, June 26, 2006 8:50 PM CDT It's my birthday today. I'm 41 AND MICHAEL IS HERE! YEA! I AM HERE! YEA!
My wife has cooked me dinner including lima beans(Butter Beans if you are from South Carolina), Squash, Corn, Cucumber salad, and Fried Chicken(purchased, not cooked). We are eating late, but that is OK.
Michael is feeling great. He has a little cold and/or allergy. Otherwise, stay with us through July. There are more updates to come.
Tony
Thursday, June 22, 2006 8:37 PM CDT Michael wants you to pray for Abby tonight. She has surgery in New York tomorrow. Please visit her website below and read the last few journal entries in her website!!!
If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.
Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God.
Tony
Thursday, June 22, 2006 3:41 AM CDT Michael continues to do very well! Not having to fight Chemo and Radiation gives him lots of energy.
Tony
Monday, June 19, 2006 6:15 PM CDT Michael is doing well. We had a great Father's Day weekend. He will be getting his "port" surgically removed the next couple of weeks. This is the thing they placed in his chest last year so he could handle the Chemo medicine entering into his system.
All of the sores on his stomach from Radiation have healed. We had a couple of bad weeks with the sores and his Urostomy(spelling?).
Tony
Wednesday, June 14, 2006 7:15 PM CDT Michael has a CT Scan scheduled for July 10th. This will provide our baseline for future comparisons.
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 8:40 PM CDT NO MATTER THE OUTCOME, I AM BLESSED, PLEASE PRAY FOR THESE FOLKS TONIGHT AND THIS WEEK!

Sunday, June 11, 2006 9:40 PM CDT Michael's sores on his tummy are doing much better.
We went fishing again this weekend at a friend's lakehouse here in Nashville. We caught some fish, and had a relaxing time.
Seeing the three children playing together all weekend was great, and moments I will never forget.
Stay in touch this week.
Tony
Wednesday, June 7, 2006 9:22 PM CDT Other than some serious skin and hygiene issues around Michael’s tummy area, we are OK. I think we slept until 6:40 this morning. Yea!!
For us, please stay tuned here on this website for a few more weeks.
Tony
Monday, June 5, 2006 8:57 PM CDT Just a quick note to say we did not find out much today. No news is good news I guess.
The Head Cancer MD did not even know Michael had completed his Radiation. A little strange you think?
Michael has radiation burns on his stomach and they make him very uncomfortable, but otherwise, he is REALLY doing great!!
Based on what I could decipher from the lack of communication today, they will do a CT scan within the next couple of weeks to provide a base comparison for scans in the future.
Thanks, Tony
Friday, June 2, 2006 3:57 PM CDT DONE!!!!!!
We took all of the children out to eat last night to celebrate. We then came home and ate cake. Michael thought is was for a birthday. Anyway, Cindy and I are going out tonight alone.
I'll repeat what some of you have heard. As you know, Michael has endured 14+ hour surgery, 48 weeks of chemotherapy, and completed 6 weeks of brutal radiation. Cindy and I are enormously tired and I know it shows. At the same time we are filled with energy because of this monumental event in our lives. Michael's spirit is stronger than ever and his prognosis is very good, given his situation.
This is a happy occasion for my family.
Cindy and I meet with the MDs at 9:30AM Monday. I'll update you on the news afterwards.
Have a great weekend. I will.
Tony
Tuesday, May 30, 2006 7:50 PM CDT TWO MORE RADIATION TREATMENTS!!
I can't explain the feeling or the anxiety I am experiencing. It's not the end of many MD visits for Michael, but what a milestone for us.
Tony
Monday, May 29, 2006 9:21 PM CDT To All,
We all consider it a day off from work, but we need to be proud of all of those who have served our flag, in honor or in memory (Kirk, hurry up and get home!).
Michael and family had a great weekend. I repeat this, but we are blessed and I wake up each day with Michael and his brother and sister and mom smiling at me.
The fun news is Michael’s hair is growing. He has some fuzz. We had a great weekend.
Michael is done with radiation on Thursday. We meet for consultation with MDs next Monday.
Please follow Abby and Barret, and others we follow.
Stay tuned.
THANKS! Tony
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 9:04 PM CDT A guy with silver hair and a little age actually had some luck tonight. It's about time. He won American Idol.
Michael is doing great.
For those that are standing by because I said this website is soon to close, stay tuned. I've convinced Cindy to place her notes on this website soon.
Tony
Tuesday, May 23, 2006 7:22 PM CDT We go back and forth on what Cindy is hearing, but it appears Michael will be done June 1, instead of May 31. I can handle the difference I guess.
I can only place three "links" on the bottom of the website. So, I'm placing one here I would like you to visit.
www.caringbridge.org/visit/barretcarter
Pray for his family as they go through radiation. I have not met his Mom, but Cindy says she is very strong.
Tony
Monday, May 22, 2006 9:17 PM CDT I took the time away from work today to play in a golf tournament by "Amanda Young Memorial Fund", and also the "Amanda Young Sunday School Class". Proceeds go to charity in memory of Amanda. Last year, they contributed over $50,000.
I've met her father Brent and other family members, and I am in awe of the effort they continue to produce in helping others in need.
We had fun today. I spoke briefly about Michael, etc. I got a little choked up, but otherwise all went well.
One of the many things provided by the foundation is the "Champ" dolls given to all children going through Chemo at Vanderbilt. In fact, the Champ Mascot was there today.
PS. I won the "Long Drive" Contest. :)
Tony
Friday, May 19, 2006 8:31 PM CDT To all devoted to reading this website routinely:
So that we are not all in “SHOCK” when it happens, I must forewarn you that I feel the need to stop updating this website soon after Michael’s treatments end May 31st 2006(exact date unknown). This pains me more than you. The comments and prayers have literally gotten me through the past 13 months. It’s been sort of a personal open diary for me. However, I must move on and allow others to use Caringbridge.org.
We will be studying how to begin charitable giving in Michael’s honor. If you have any ideas on how to make this happen or if you just want to be sure we stay in touch with you concerning Michael, then send me an e-mail or post on this website the next few weeks.
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Whatever happens, this is my continued favorite verse. It worked!!
So, stay tuned the next couple of weeks.
Tony
Thursday, May 18, 2006 7:35 PM CDT Michael is doing OK. He has a small infection or something for which they have given him some medicine. Otherwise, we are cautiously awaiting May 31.
Tony
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 9:04 PM CDT We've confirmed Michael's last treatment for now is May 31st. He is "on fire" he is so happy right now. It's almost unexplainable. I know we will see bad times, but he is so happy. From the beginning, his smile has been unexplainable, except through prayer.
Pray for Abby.
Tony
Monday, May 15, 2006 6:47 PM CDT I think we are around 19 of 31 treatments. Based on that estimate, if he goes for treatment on Memorial Day, it looks like we will be finished the 31st of May. It will take all summer for his counts to recover based on what I know and have heard from others. I'm sure there are many things I do not know, possible complications, etc. However, I do know August will be "MY FAMILY" month for me. By that I mean we will have some FUN time together, not necessarily MORE time. I'm not sure how to improve on MORE time.
Tony
Friday, May 12, 2006 7:50 PM CDT Michael's doing well.
Cindy went to get her mom and bring her to Nashville for Mother's Day.
Have a great weekend.
Tony
Thursday, May 11, 2006 8:23 PM CDT Michael is doing great. We have struggles(sp), but we are blessed! He is HAPPY every morning! Pray for Abby! See her website below.
Tony
Tuesday, May 9, 2006 7:48 PM CDT Michael did OK with his blood transfusion today. Mom and Michael did not get home until 3:00PM plus today. So it was a long day for them, and a little shuffle for watching the other two children.
For the remainder of treatment, they have increased the area of radiation which is scary, but not as much since they were successful with his stem cell removal last week. So, we expect more visible side effects going forward. After all, radiation is not normal.
Tony
Monday, May 8, 2006 7:36 PM CDT Michael had a good weekend with family. He does need to get blood tomorrow, but otherwise things are going smoothly. 14 of 31 treatments.
Tony
Friday, May 5, 2006 9:58 PM CDT Nana, Papa, Aunt Lori, and Cousin Eric(spelling) came to see Michael(and all) this weekend from Myrtle(sp) Beach. We are having a great time. My Dad turned 80 on Wednesday of this past week. What an amazing thing!! Michael struggled to get to 5, and I am blessed to make it to 40, soon to be 41. Can we imagine 80?
Michael’s doing great. Pray for Abby this weekend. She is in NYC this weekend. See her link.
Tony
Thursday, May 4, 2006 6:36 PM CDT It has been confirmed. They got 8 million good Stem Cells for Michael's later use if needed. Who can count that high? Ha Ha. They only needed and were only expecting 2M. This is a blessing today. It significantly reduces the risk of some of the difficulties Michael could have with Radiation.
He is a little sore today, but he is doesn't complain. He's just walking a little funny, but very happy.
Tony
Wednesday, May 3, 2006 8:06 PM CDT Michael is HOME! I made it to the hospital about 4:00PM today. His Stem Cell removal went very well. They said he may be really sore and also have some trouble walking until the medicine wore off. Well he's walking around all over the house tonight. Preliminary test show that they removed around 9 million cells from Michael. Now if they can get 2 million from the 9 that qualify as Stem Cell, they will be very pleased and have more than enough. What I just said made no sense to me either. Just know that things went well, and we will no more tomorrow. It sure is nice to be home. Thanks to all the prayers for Michael today. Many new friends were praying with me at AGE in St Louis.
Tony
Friday, April 28, 2006 7:25 PM CDT 9 out of 31 radiation treatments complete (i.e. - plus or minus 29 percent complete for radiation)!! Yea! Last night was tiring for me at the Emergency Room with Michael. He had no fever this morning however. Another…Yea!!!
I can't wait until Michael is well enough for us to focus on how we can help other people. More specifically, how we can help Vanderbilt help other people.
Michael misses the nurses on Vanderbilt 6B, for those of you who are watching. However, he does not miss it(you) enough to spend the night there yet, nor do I. :)..:)
If all goes well with Michael, I will be out of town for work from Sunday morning until Wednesday night. Michael’s Stem Cell Removal is Wednesday. I will not be here. So, I will update this website again the night of May 3rd if all goes well.
Pray for Michael.
P.S. We appreciate people writing journal entries on the website. Keep in mind that one day in Michael's future, he will read this journal and it will add strength and "purpose" for him.
Tony
Thursday, April 27, 2006 11:17 PM CDT At 7:45 tonight, Michael's fever was 102.5. We were advised to take him to the emergency room for blood work. Although late, we are fortunately sleeping at home tonight. He will continue treatment in the morning.
Tony
Thursday, April 27, 2006 7:56 AM CDT Radiation is still going fine. Michael needed a blood tranfusion yesterday because of his blood counts.
Tony
Tuesday, April 25, 2006 5:49 PM CDT I went with Cindy to take Michael for radiation this morning. The folks were very nice and entertaining to Michael. We discussed Michael's treatments with them, and then went to the clinic to discuss the stem cell removal with the other MDs. The procedure is scheduled for May 3. The bad news is I am scheduled to be out of town. The good news is that Michael should not have to stay over night and I will be home that night. The pain depends on the individual, but I expect Michael to handle it well based on what he has been through to date.
Michael has completed 6 of 31 radiation treatments.
Tony
Monday, April 24, 2006 6:36 PM CDT Michael and I took Grandmother Perritt home to Alabama this weekend after an Easter stay. Michael had a great time. Michael is doing well and we meet with his MDs tomorrow concerning his Stem Cell removal.
We/I am getting many nice notes both US Mail and e-mail from all who are concerned. It was actually on Monday a year ago, but tomorrow/Tuesday the 25th of 2005, we found out Michael had cancer. We celebrate birthdays because we made it another year...so this date is a celebration for Michael.
One e-mail pointed out to us that Michael has been on TV recently. It has been seen in Denver and Nashville. If your computer is up-to-date enough, you can view it by going to
http://www.transformationnation.com/TV/tvshow.aspx
and watching "Katie's Helping Hand". The person that spotted it saw Michael's smile and knew it had to be him. SHe was right.
I'll update you after our visit with the MDs tomorrow.
Tony
Friday, April 21, 2006 7:44 PM CDT I'm beginning to think I need some of whatever they are placing in Michael's IV every morning. Just kidding, but he has been happier and had more energy this week than anytime in the past year.
We look forward to the weekend. No radiation again until Monday. Cindy and I meet with the MDs Tuesday concerning Stem Cell removal.
Tony
Thursday, April 20, 2006 8:45 PM CDT Just a note to say things are going well for Michael so far. He was back home by 9:05 this morning after radiation. Talking about having a FULL day before 9:00AM......
Next week will be more interesting/challenging. Stem Cells will hopefully be removed. More to come there.
Tony
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 7:06 PM CDT Michael made it thorough day 2 of radiation. Michael, Cindy and I went to lunch together today. He had lots of energy and ate well.
I think that extra mandatory nap he is getting during radiation is really giving him a lot of energy the last two days.
Thanks for the prayers...for all of us...
Tony
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 7:36 PM CDT Michael is at home, and he had his first Radiation Treatment this morning. He handled being put to sleep for the treatment very well. We are moving forward. Yea....
Tony
Monday, April 17, 2006 7:36 PM CDT Well, Michael's radiation has been delayed at least a day. He got sick on the way to the hospital this early morning. They were concerned it might be from his injuries from his fall yesterday(see previous journal entries). So, they wanted to do a CT scan to be sure he did not have any head injuries. The good news is he did not.
Mom getting up this morning and taking a shower before me really help throw things even more off any kind of normal schedule we may have had…...
I feel really badly(bad?) Michael hurt himself because I insisted he be a good boy and take his plate to the kitchen to be cleaned up once he finished his lunch (stringy noodles). His clumsiness made him fall as he was taking his plate to the kitchen.
It’s not the start I had envisioned for radiation, but he is in the hospital for precautions tonight and we hope to avoid a “false start” tomorrow.
Tony
Sunday, April 16, 2006 7:43 PM CDT We had a great weekend, mostly spent outside. Michael did have one minor accident on our driveway. A few minor scratches on his knees, hands and forehead. The children played with our neighbors and had a great time. We also finally celebrated William's birthday.
Radiation starts in the morning. Six weeks of "Radiation Camp" here we come.

Thursday, April 13, 2006 8:39 PM CDT Someone read my journal from last night and reminded me to keep in mind something I have repeated often on this website. Chin Up!!
So we are going to have a great Easter weekend, and go into Monday strong. I'm actually going to play golf tomorrow. Something that's happened once in the past 12 months.
Michael's feeling well. Have a great weekend.
Tony
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 8:33 PM CDT I'm so thankful we've made it this far in the battle. Chemo is over.
Now, we've learned that Michael starts Radiation this Monday. It will last six weeks. As mentioned before, he will have to be at the hospital every morning at 7:00AM, and he will be put to sleep for the procedure so that he does not move.
As we face this challenge, I can't express to you how scared I am and how it has dominated my thoughts. It’s on my mind every minute of every day and I know people feel like they are sometimes talking to a wall when speaking to me. This is deeper than just worrying about your child falling off a swing and breaking their arm, or not getting along with people at school, or not being competitive academically or athletically, or all the other normal worries. Hug your children each day and tell them you love them. Show them and teach them how to smile.
Please continue to pray for Michael and do not be shy about telling other people to do the same.
Tony
Tuesday, April 11, 2006 7:16 PM CDT Still at home...Yea....More to come on the future treatments for Michael. I just really don't have anything new to report tonight other than what a joy it is to see all three children watching Charlie Brown Easter Story together.. Tony
Monday, April 10, 2006 9:01 PM CDT We are still at home. Michael and I have a little more energy today. After three nights together in the hospital, I was getting on his nerves.
He met a new friend named Faith(I believe). She was a very sweet little girl on Michael's floor. They danced together from far apart because of their counts, etc...
They will check his counts here at home in the morning. I'll keep you posted.
Tony
Sunday, April 9, 2006 7:44 PM CDT We are home!
Tony
Saturday, April 8, 2006 3:31 PM CDT I don't think we've found the source for Michael's fever yet. It was over 103 this morning around 7:00AM. They gave him some medicine, I jumped in the bed with him and he kept me warm. We stayed there until 10:00AM. About that time, he felt better. Mom came and relieved me about 11:30AM.
I have attempted to nap...Caroline has gone to a birthday party and I am spending some time with William. He turned 4 today and we are not even celebrating his birthday. In fact, we have not even told him he is 4 today. We will make up for it later. As I take a break and write this e-mail, William comes over to me and say's "I miss Michael and I wish he could come home and play."
I'll stay with Michael for night number 3 tonight.
Tony
Friday, April 7, 2006 8:42 PM CDT Michael is still in the hospital waiting for his counts to go up, and his fever to stay down. Cindy and I were scheduled to go to a Black Tie event tonight that was focused on the Junior League of Nashville, which donates SO MUCH to charity, including Vanderbilt. Fortunately, Cindy was still able to go with a friend.
My tuxedo rental went to waste. It's my fault because I OWN a tuxedo....It just does not fit ME...
Bad weather in Tennessee tonight. Lots of nurses working overtime here at Vanderbilt.
By the way, we were treated very nicely on 6A at Vanderbilt, but they knew how much Michael loved the nurses on 6B, and maybe they loved and knew him... We got a new room on 6B. All the nurses have to love their job....
Tony
Thursday, April 6, 2006 11:36 PM CDT Well, I updated the site earlier this evening saying Michael will be getting blood and platelets on Friday. Since that update, his fever went way up and we have been admitted after going through the process of the ER. We just got in our room and we are on 6A, instead of 6B because of space. However, there are still many familiar faces.
Most likely, they will go ahead with the transfusion, etc tonight since he is here now. He is also on antibiotics.
Good night!
Tony
Thursday, April 6, 2006 5:43 PM CDT I was a couple of days off. Michael will be getting blood and platelets on Friday. So, maybe he'll have a nice weekend watching the Master's Golf tournament with Dad.
Tony
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 7:51 PM CDT Michael did not need blood today. He does have a minor cold, and is having trouble breathing at night. These are minor issues. I just hope he sleeps better tonight, since it directly impacts Cindy and me.
Tony
Tuesday, April 4, 2006 8:30 PM CDT Sometimes I hesitate trying to keep all of you in touch with what is going on because even I have trouble keeping up with it. However, I appreciate your efforts in keeping informed about Michael, and I know you read this website.
If I had to guess, Michael will get blood tomorrow or the next day. This is a normal event in our lives, but not really so normal. He is sleeping restlessly right now, and that is my clue.
On April 25th 2005, I was called to come home from AG Edwards Corporate Office in St. Louis because of Michael and his diagnosis of Cancer and....that anniversary is soon approaching…The worst day of my life...However, another anniversary to celebrate…Michael is still here…
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Tony
Monday, April 3, 2006 9:41 PM CDT Michael just got his shot. He's doing well.
More to come on this, but they are most likely going to extract some of Michael's Stem Cells before his radiation. We have a consultation on this, but I'm not sure when yet. This is precautionary in case there are complications down the road. Although retrieving his stem cells to save is not fun, it provides a cushion for down the road troubles.
As for Cindy and I/me, it looks like our marriage will make it 13 years and 1 day. :)
Tony
Sunday, April 2, 2006 6:38 PM CDT Michael's had a nice weekend. He is getting shots each day for his counts, but otherwise doing well.
On Monday, Cindy and I will have been married for 13 years.
Tony
Wednesday, March 29, 2006 8:19 PM CST Michael has a huge "Congrats" sign on his door at the hospital tonight. It's his last night. He gets his Chemo at 4:00AM in the morning.
I saw Abby when I went down to Vandy on the way home tonight. She looked great. She has a great optimistic smile as always. She and Michael played in his room for a while.
Below is the prayer I placed on this website back on July 19th, 2005. We can add another verse to the blessings/miracles as we venture through our remaining challenges.
It will always be my special prayer.
Tony
-------- Dear Lord, When there were questions concerning his breathing, you taught him to breathe. When there were questions concerning his eating, you taught him to eat. When there were questions concerning his vision, you taught him to see. When there were questions concerning his hearing, you taught him to hear. When there were questions concerning his walking, you taught him to walk. When there were questions concerning his speech, you taught him to speak.
Michael has been challenged many times and won, and we’ve been blessed by his successes, strength and your miracles through him.
We realize that there will be difficult and painful times ahead for Michael and our family. We ask that all other situations in our life go smoothly during this time, and that you provide Michael and our family courage, endurance and health. More importantly we pray for the opportunity to continue seeing miracles through Michael’s life, if it is your will and purpose.
Watch over Michael, the Doctors and my family during his surgery this week. Amen. ______
Tuesday, March 28, 2006 8:39 PM CST Michael and Cindy are doing well at the hospital. I saw them for a few minutes tonight. If I heard correctly from Cindy, radiation will start 2 weeks from yesterday. In other words, a break next week and then radiation. He has lots of energy. I was trying to push his IV pole behind him this afternoon and he really was going at a fast pace.
One of his very first teachers at Westminster, Alice, came to see him this afternoon. She brought lots of goodies. Alice will always be special to Michael and family.
I also think I heard Cindy say he may get to come home Thursday instead of Friday. I could have dreamed it.
Tony
Monday, March 27, 2006 7:36 PM CST Michael is in the hospital tonight and will be there until Friday. However, this is his last Chemo treatment as I had mentioned before. We'll see them again for other things going forward, but I'm going to miss the “scheduled” accommodations every third week of our lives the last 11 months on 6B Vanderbilt. OK, not really.
I’ll just miss the wonderful people that have treated Michael like he was an angel. I knew he was, but I think they might just think he is also. They have been very tolerant of his many noisy toys, and his sometimes very demanding personality. We’ve had many ups and downs, and I know many more to come. However this is a huge milestone.
So let’s enjoy it!!!!
Now at the same time, please read Addy's website tonight and hear her mother's plea for continued prayer. Abby is a special little girl with lots of people following her purpose.
Tony
Saturday, March 25, 2006 10:11 PM CST Michael's having a great weekend. Aunt Sharon came to see us from Atlanta. We went to eat at a restaurant called the Aquarium tonight. We waited 1.5 hours to get in, but Michael loved it. Once we were IN, I settled down. I was a little un-nerved by the wait.... They had many big fish in the restaurant.
Tony
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 8:00 PM CST Nothing real eventful happened today with Michael. In this business, that's a good thing. We hope for a nice weekend before his last CHEMO treatment next week.
Tony
Tuesday, March 21, 2006 7:09 PM CST Cindy is back!!! I'm still talking like a five year old, but Cindy is still able to communicate with me at this point. This is a JOKE!!!!
It's nice to have all the family at home!
Tony
Monday, March 20, 2006 7:24 PM CST Michael is doing well. Cindy is still in Florence. She's been there since Thursday! I guess she thinks it's spring break for her. I'm going a little stir crazy. I did take the Michael and Caroline out to eat three times this weekend. We had a nice time. Some adult conversation at home would be nice however....Cindy is expected back tomorrow. Tony
Friday, March 17, 2006 8:57 PM CST William and Mom went to see Grandmama Perritt yesterday. They will come home tomorrow. It's been nice because Caroline and Michael have done some re-bonding without William here. If they both feel well, I'm going to take them out to lunch tomorrow.
Have a great weekend with your family.
Tony
Thursday, March 16, 2006 7:37 PM CST Well, we've had an interesting 48 hours. Michael went in Wednesday morning to get a CT scan so they could "mark" him for radiation treatment. They had difficulty waking him up. The CT scan showed a large spot on his lungs. Yikes! Our hearts dropped! This is not a place that is uncommon for the type of cancer he has had. Anyway, they first concluded that it might be pneumonia. This would not be a great diagnosis, but better than “you know what”. Anyway, he was admitted to the hospital last night. I stayed with him. After a few more X-rays last night and EARLY!! this morning, it was concluded that it really was just a “deflated (minor collapsed) lung” during CT Scan caused by weakness. OK!!!, well whatever it is/was is better than the alternative. We are home tonight.
The water line broke outside our yard this morning. Water everywhere!!! We just got it fixed.
Other folks in our family are having health problems, but I'm not going into that. Please pray for Michael and all family.
Tony
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 6:15 PM CST Michael is feeling well. He is keeping me busy going back and forth to the kitchen to get him more food. Unfortunately, I grab a bite or two for me each time also.
He has started asking when he is going back to school, and he seems anxious to do so. We told him next year, and now he asks every day. We have him registered for the fall. There are many obstacles to overcome, but I pray it happens.
I know you have, but keep telling other people about the miracles of Michael.
Tony
Monday, March 13, 2006 7:14 PM CST Michael had a good weekend and was able to go outside because it was so warm. He is still getting shots each night.
Michael goes Wednesday to be "marked" for radiation. It's hard to believe the time is so near for that.....
Caroline and William went to the dentist today to have their teeth cleaned. They apparently did very well.
Keep praying for Michael and our family.....
Tony
Saturday, March 11, 2006 12:38 AM CST Michael is feeling much better the last few days. They placed him on an antibiotic. He had been coughing pretty hard, and I think the medicine is helping. In other words, it appears he did have some tytpe of infection and needed help fighting it.
I took William to a birthday party this morning, then took him for a haircut, and then took him to lunch. We had a great time together. We are both wearing shorts because it is so warm here today.
Have a great weekend!!
Tony
Thursday, March 9, 2006 9:37 PM CST Michael is doing well at home. He is eating and resting well. Thanks for all of the support. Can you tell I'm tired? :) Tony
Tuesday, March 7, 2006 7:05 PM CST What a day! Anyway, Cindy and I met with Radiation Oncology. I guess our skin has grown too thick over the last year because they did not break us. I do not underestimate the realistic possibilities of long and short term effects of radiation. The short term effects seemed manageable to me and the long term effects, well let’s worry about them 20-30 years from now??? I never want problems, but wow, problems 20-30 years from now? I pray I'm still here to help. It's more complicated than this, but we were not frazzled today.
Dr. Hallahan was who we met with today. It was a very good first impression of him. We had a few issues finding his office, and really could not find anyone that pointed us in the right direction, BUT he was impressive.
Michael is getting Chemo tonight and should be home tomorrow.
I'll explain the radiation process in more detail once we get closer to that time.
Tony
Monday, March 6, 2006 7:57 PM CST Michael is in the hospital after being in the clinic all day long. The nurses in the clinic provided Michael a BIG bag of belated birthday gifts. I think they all made noise. So, as a favor I'm going to donate many MORE toys back to the clinic at some point for them to listen to with the other children. Ha! Really, we were very appreciative and Michael was too.
Michael is getting blood tonight, and then Chemo we hope. It was decided no CT Scan today since he was getting Chemo. Cindy and I meet with the radiation doctors in the morning. Cindy was warned that not many people come out of that meeting with dry eyes. Cindy was quick to remind them of the difficulty of the meeting we had in July when the decision was made to operate on Michael. It was basically the only option, with extreme risks and unknown prognosis. Look how that step turned out. So, we go into this with positive attitudes. I can't count how many times I've seen Michael smile since the surgery in July. We have a few more weeks of Chemo, and then the radiation. When that's done, "WE ARE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!!!!"
PS. We just found out he will not get Chemo tonight. He had some fever tonight and they were afraid to start Chemo. So, the hope is they will start tomorrow. The unpopular choice is to send him home. Minor issue, but this may lengthen his stay this week.
Tony
Saturday, March 4, 2006 4:39 PM CST Michael has had a nice Saturday. The last few days he did not feel well ,or sleep well. However, today he has felt better and we are ready for Chemo Monday. Cindy and I have an appointment Tuesday to learn more about the radiation process we face soon.
Tony
Wednesday, March 1, 2006 7:04 PM CST I hesitate to share some of Michael’s good news tonight for two reasons. I’ll share them in a minute. It appears Michael’s last Chemo treatments will be the week of March 27th. I’ve been counting Chemo weeks since his surgery in July, but it appears his MDs have been counting the weeks since he was diagnosed and really started Chemo. In other words, Michael has been getting Chemo since the last week in April 2005. They counted the weeks from the start. So this is a milestone. We are far from done. Once Chemo is done, he will get 6 weeks of intensive radiation everyday. From what they are saying, it is far more brutal. I’m ready! Now for the two reasons I hesitated sharing this tonight. First, I usually have a communication gap between Cindy, me and the MDs. So, I’m afraid to get my hopes up that we have come this far before I speak personally to an MD. SECOND, Abby did not get the greatest news today. Please read the journal on her website. I know she and her family remain positive. Pray for her family, and send her a message to let her know you are praying for her. Michael is a testament to prayer! Tony
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 7:54 PM CST My company’s fiscal year ended today. I managed to go out and celebrate with my co-workers. I enjoyed it. Everyone in my office has been so considerate of what my family has gone through the last twelve months. I cannot express how much I appreciate it.
Speaking of the last twelve months, we’ve lost Gilligan and Barney Fife. These were fictional characters, but were so simple and made me laugh so many times in my life. They were my favorite characters. I forgot everything while watching their shows. Laughter has gotten me through these times, many in the past, and in the future.
Michael is doing well. We gave him his OWN birhtday party last night since he was at home.
Tony
Monday, February 27, 2006 5:53 PM CST Michael is home tonight. His platelets were too low for Chemo. The MDs feel like they are coming up on their own. So, no transfusion and we go back next Monday. We were a little disappointed, but he goes in for a CT next Monday anyway.
Tony
Saturday, February 25, 2006 7:29 PM CST Michael and I went to lunch together today alone. We had a great time. It meant so much to me. The restaurant we went to has a picture of Michael(and William and Caroline) on the wall!!!
Before that, I had to unclog a minor plumbing problem in our front yard. Yuk! I'm not sure what the problem was, but I did not count the "singing fish" that might be missing. :)
After that, I had to fix a broken pipe that froze during our bad weather last week. I had paid a plumber $$ to tell me there was no leak last Monday. There WAS a leak. Surprise, I was right.
We had visitors today. Jack and Julia(William's Godparents) and David and Kathy(Great friends) came over. They all loved the company and all are very tired tonight.
Have a blessed Sunday and pray for Michael's Chemo this Monday and the CT Scan next Monday. We pray for no new issues.
PS. Visit Abby. Her website is listed below.
Tony
Friday, February 24, 2006 11:03 PM CST Michael's doing great tonight. So, the attention needs to go to my Mom first. Her birthday was the 23rd of February. Happy Birthday Mom.
I've expressed before, but my parents are the best.
As I sit here, Michael is yelling for me to come to bed…He says…”are you coming to bed?...I reply to him …”in a minute..”…he says how about a “skinny minute?”….So, I’ve got to go. He needs a “Soft” kiss.
Tony
Friday, February 24, 2006 7:47 AM CST Michael is sleeping well at night, and we hope for a nice weekend before Michael is admitted on Monday for Chemo. It should only be a one night stay.
Tony
Wednesday, February 22, 2006 9:00 PM CST So now that American Idol is over,
Michael and Caroline had a very nice birthday. I had a dinner meeting canceled tonight that I had set a few days ago(WHY DID I SET IT FOR TONIGHT?). So, I was saved from a cold shoulder upon my return home.
William adores his older brother and sister. It really is like having triplets.
Tony
Tuesday, February 21, 2006 6:59 PM CST I’m back!!,,,,and I’m pretty sure Jennifer Frith, our babysitter, is glad we are back. Cindy and I took a quick trip to Las Vegas. The trip was delayed by about 12 hours on Friday. It was not because of Michael, but actually William. He had a pretty bad stomach virus, and did not start feeling better until about 4:00PM Friday. Cindy was not going to leave him, and I GUESS it was best for me not to leave for Las Vegas without Cindy. :)
We left at 9:00PM Friday night and acted like 20 year olds for the rest of the trip. So, I’m not sure we came back with energy and rest as I stated we would in my last journal entry. Anyway, we saw Elton John in concert. Wow, is all I can say about the performance. It was much better than I suspected. I guess you do not have to be a big fan of the messenger to enjoy the message. All of his songs were great. However, his last song (“Your Song”) really hit home. Both of us were thinking of Michael, especially when Elton sang the phrase “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world”.
Michael has a cold, but is doing well.
Tony
Thursday, February 16, 2006 7:25 PM CST Michael has gained some strength from his blood transfusion.
SOOOO, Cindy and I are getting away for the weekend. I feel like I have not seen Cindy since December of 2004. I'm not really sure I've really looked in the mirror at myself either. I hate to leave the children, but wife comes first and I feel we need to get away and re-group so we can make it through the rest of Michael's treatments, etc. Some may not agree, but those who have been here probably will.
The children will be taken care of by some very qualified(but nervous) friends, and we have lots of backups lined up.
If all goes well, I will not update this website again until Monday night and with much energy and rest.
PS. Check out the new pictures if you have not already.
Tony
Wednesday, February 15, 2006 8:23 PM CST Michael got a blood tranfusion today. He had some minor reactions to the blood, but nothing that wasn't managed. We've had so many, we forget what a major process this can be. After all, you are placing someone's blood that does not belong to you in your body.
I had a meeting in Louisville, KY today. It went well, and of course I thought about Abby and all of the KY support Michael and Abby receive as I drove through Bowling Green. I almost stopped at the Corvette Museum, but was short on time.
Michael is tired tonight, but I expect the new blood will provide needed energy.
Tony
Tuesday, February 14, 2006 6:37 PM CST Michael's sleeping a lot by the time I get home each day right now. I did just bath him in the tub for Valentines. Mom might be next! Ha. Ha. Sorry, I had to say that.
Yes, Michael and Caroline turn 5 next Wednesday(22nd). It's hard to believe.
Michael gets blood tomorrow. We'll update you tomorrow night.
Tony
Monday, February 13, 2006 7:34 PM CST Looks like Michael will need blood by Wednesday. He did have a good day. We have a new fish. Well, actually it's a singing catfish. He heard it over the phone from some friends(Godparents) in Birmingham Friday night. They sent it to him. We've been eagerly awaiting its arrival since Friday night:). Michael did not understand mail delivery timeframe, and he nearly came out of his skin when the mailman delivered it today.
The children also opened a gift received at the same time from Nana and Papa today. It was a pair of singing dogs. They all LOVED it. I'm listening the the catfish sing with the twin dogs as I write this e-mail. So much for hearing what Bill O'Reilly is actually saying on Fox.
Sunday, February 12, 2006 5:43 PM CST Michael's had a good weekend. I've posted some NEW PICTURES!
Friday, February 10, 2006 7:20 PM CST As I traveled home this Friday, I was in a pretty good mood until I realized I had only made eleven dollars this week. No profession is easy, including mine. And be assured, you can pray but you better be willing to help out with what you pray for. Anyway, I did work hard this week given the fact that Michael was in the hospital, but I felt like sharing my opinion. The relationships I created this week will build and be fruitful down the road. It’s just a good thing Michael’s “stringy” noodles are eight for a dollar. :)
Enough about me….Michael is home tonight and we are expecting 2-4 inches of snow. It is actually the first time in my life that I can remember I actually want a big snow so we can all be stuck in the house together.
He’s doing well. I’ve been with him the last two nights in the hospital and I can’t wait for my pillow. He got sick this morning right before I left, but I think he has been fine since. Mom had to care for him and the other two children AT THE HOSPITAL (because of continued babysitting issues) the last two days. Her hair looks a little messy tonight (it’s standing straight up!), but she’s as beautiful as ever.
Pray for Abby and visit her website. She is old enough to read your messages.
If nothing happens eventful, I need a break from this website and will not update until Monday. Thanks for all the support and prayers!!!!!!
Tony
Thursday, February 9, 2006 7:58 PM CST Michael had a good night last night and a busy day today. William and Caroline were here all day with mom because of some continued babysitter issues that I hope will soon be resolved. We have gotten some help from a nice nurse named Emily.
Our expectations were that we were getting discharged today. After last round, Michael's MD reduced his dosage of Chemo back by 20 nd said that should get him home one day earlier. In other words, instead of 5 treatments, reduce 20 o 4 treatments and 4 days. Well, some of his fellow MDs apparently misunderstood and cut the amount by 20 nd kept it at 5 treatments at a 20 ess dosage instead. SO, they should pay me for tomorrow I think. I'm sure you agree. Perhaps even explain that to the healthcare company.
I am with him tonight and we went to watch Charlie Brown Valentines with Abby.
Tony
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 6:10 PM CST OUCH, what a wake up call to be back on "the couch" at Vanderbilt.
Michael has actually gotten sick today, which is ahead of his normal schedule. However, he is sleeping well right now and we will see if it last through the night.
I just saw Abby checking in. What a pretty little young lady from KY. Be sure to visit her website listed below. I also saw Joshua and Christopher and their mom for the first time in person and please visit their website below.
Continue to pray for strength for the children and all the parents!!!!
Tony
Tuesday, February 7, 2006 6:26 PM CST Mom had a bad night in the hospital with Michael last night. Not sure why. I do not think Michael felt bad. Just restless, and MOM was sleeping on our famous couch. She's on duty again tonight, and I'll take Wednesday night.
Michael weighed 45.5 LBs when he checked in yesterday. Of course we get nervous if he gains weight too quickly because of the obvious fear. However, things seem normal. His cheeks are thick. He gets another CT Scan done the week of the 27th.
One of the nurses was asking questions tonight about Michael and the last few months because she is writing a paper on something. Most of the questions were asked before my arrival, but a couple of questions she asked I could not answer because I could not remember. i.e. It made me realize how things have become so blurry about the past because I'm so focused on today and the future....for Michael. I did refer her to this website however. Maybe there are some answers in past journals.
Tony
Monday, February 6, 2006 6:57 PM CST Michael just got into a room. It's been a long day for Mom and Michael. This is the longest it has taken to get a room. His counts are very good and he will start his Chemo. Hopefully, he will be home late Thursday.
Yes, I bought him a NEW singing fish today!!! I had to go to two Walgreens to find it. I bought three just in case they run out. So, I have two in my trunk.
Tony
Sunday, February 5, 2006 3:25 PM CST Michael came back strong today. He is napping now, but he has a lot of energy and is eating well again. I hope it was just a little tummy bug. I feel strongly his Chemo will start tomorrow and he will see his many Vanderbilt nurses, and other friends including Abby from KY. I must confess that I can't wait to see Abby too.
My "MICHAEL" goal this week is to update some pictures on the website. It's difficult to choose because I can only post 3 pictures at a time, resize them, etc.
Tony
Saturday, February 4, 2006 10:32 PM CST Michael's had a couple of unusual days. We could tell he was not himself. He got sick tonight, but has since come alive. I hope it was just a normal problem. He has no fever and we hope Chemo starts Monday. Thanks for all of the support. Pray for us to stay strong. Tony
Thursday, February 2, 2006 7:44 PM CST Michael's cheeks looked so full tonight when I got home. He's eating well. He gets on one particular item and will not quit eating it until he is tired of it. Right now, he is on corn dogs. Last Chemo round it was Cheese Toast.
I know I repeat myself on this website, but at least SOMETIMES, I remember I have said it. Today while eating lunch, I remembered a quote I had posted and wanted to go back and read it. Here it is. Author unknown:
"Watching your child is like watching your heart walk around outside your body."
Wow. I love that quote! It's so true and gives me chills. However, right now I have three hearts running around like crazy before bedtime.
Let your light shine!
Tony
Wednesday, February 1, 2006 6:34 PM CST Michael is feeling well. We are crossing our fingers that he will stay well until Monday so he can be admitted for Chemo. If so, he would be in the hospital for 4 nights. I've been "short-winded" lately. I'll either blame that I'm very tired or I OPENED my HEATING bill..:)It took my breath away. We still need your support and prayers and pass it on. Thanks, Tony
Tuesday, January 31, 2006 7:36 AM CST Michael had a pretty good day Monday and a good night sleep. They checked his blood count yesterday, and are coming again this morning. Hopefully they are up. Tony
Sunday, January 29, 2006 9:05 PM CST Michal and the rest played outside today. He probably did not need to be outside, but how do you keep him inside and let the other two go play on the swingset? Anyway, it was quite warm today for January. Michael played with his neighbors today. They of course own "The Pumpkin Boy" Toy from Halloween. Michael insisted on having it today. We could not convince him it came out once a year. SO,,,, Our neighbors were nice enough to go searching in their attic for it and found it. Unfortunately for them, they will have a difficult time getting it back in one piece.
I am getting a cold, and Michael has gotten his cough back that he had gotten rid of...No fever however. We just hope he can get his Chemo, not tomorrow, but next Monday.
Tony.
Saturday, January 28, 2006 8:43 PM CST Mr. Tom Frith, Jennifer Frith's Dad brought Michael a new special SINGING toy tonight. I KNOW the folks down at Vanderbilt can't wait to see what it is. He was so excited, and he still is. I'm not going to tell you what it is. It's a surprise for the nurses. Jennifer babysits for us often and the children love her.
I'm very happy with my life. So, I wanted to say that before I share with you what I read on a church sign this week. I often read them. As I passed by a church here in town, the sign said, "Tired of your life?,,,,God takes trade ins....."..
Michael had a very good day.
Tony
Friday, January 27, 2006 10:17 PM CST Michael sits on my lap as I write this e-mail. He says hello and thanks for all of the nice messages and help at Vanderbilt. He baked a cake with mom today for Valentines. As he glances at the computer screen, he says he wants to see himself at the hospital(pictures). He says he wants to see Leslie Ann, Tara, and Rebecca in the clinic. He names many more, but he is killing my legs and I've got to get him off my lap. Love, Dad and Michael.
Thursday, January 26, 2006 7:34 PM CST Michael was restless last night. He tossed and turned. So we tossed and turned waiting for a fever. Mom said Michael had a pretty good day, however. The blood tranfusion helped. He does have a runny nose, but no fever yet. Tony
Wednesday, January 25, 2006 5:59 PM CST Michael went to the clinic and got blood and platelets(sp) today. Hopefully, this will help him have some energy for the weekend and next week so he can continue Chemo the week of February 6th. He weighed 44 pounds. This was good. He is eating well.
P.S. Dad got a ticket from Mr. Policeman today while driving Michael home for an expired License Plate. Mr. Policemen had no hair and I almost tried to bribe him by using Michael in the back seat by saying look what you two have in common. I did not do it. I got the ticket anyway. :)
Tony
Tuesday, January 24, 2006 6:56 PM CST I received this message about Jack tonight. Althouh I have not met him personally, I pray for him and his family.
"Shannon Woods called me yesterday, and she is asking that we pray for Jack right now. His leukemia had been MUCH better lately until last week. His numbers did not look good last week or yesterday. The doctors have now scheduled a bone marrow test that was not scheduled until his numbers changed. They told Shannon not to worry until they see what the test shows next week. Understandably, she is his mother and she is worried. So, please pray for him."
His website is listed below. Please visit and leave him a caring thought.
Tony
Monday, January 23, 2006 7:09 PM CST Michael's counts are low enough to continue shots, but we do not need a blood tranfusion yet. He had a pretty good day, but he is usually very tired by the time I get home. Tony
Sunday, January 22, 2006 9:26 AM CST Michael had a good night. He's going to watch football with me today They will come by to check his blood counts tomorrow. Tony
Saturday, January 21, 2006 10:06 PM CST When Michael's Chemo and Radiation is over, I'm going to have a party so big, it will close our street down. Tony
Friday, January 20, 2006 6:02 PM CST Michael was in a very good mood when I got home tonight. However, his energy level does not last long. He has crashed in my chair and is sound asleep at the moment. Shots have resumed and they will check his counts on Monday. Have a great weekend. Tony
Wednesday, January 18, 2006 5:53 PM CST Michael enjoyed the minor snow that Nashville received last night. He had a good day. We start the shots tomorrow night. Cindy and I want to be even more diligent in keeping germs away from him. So, if you plan on seeing him, buy yourself some of the hand sanitizer. We have some, but please use it before you arrive or see him. It's not obsessive, it's necessary. Please visit Abby’s website listed below. She goes into the hospital tomorrow for her second treatment. Tony
Tuesday, January 17, 2006 6:44 PM CST Well, Michael got his Chemo treatment and is home tonight. "Anticipation" is just another thing you have to deal with in this situation. He was delayed last week twice, and we finally go him checked in yesterday. To some degree, it plays more on your nerves than just being admitted. In other words, it’s just an additional factor in the unknown game.
We are around 28(plus or minus) weeks into his Chemo. The existing plan is for 48 weeks. After that is over, he will have 6 weeks of everyday radiation treatment, and it is supposedly much worse. Then, we have to worry about reconstructive surgery for his bladder, etc. Anyway, we can't worry about that right now.
When this is all done, I'm going to do something much crazier than buying a two seated convertible. Right now, jumping into a frozen lake seems plausible to wake me up!
Tony
Monday, January 16, 2006 8:49 PM CST Michael is in the hosptial and we(Caroline, Willima and me) went to see him tonight. Mom is staying with him.
I've been cleaning the house, but it still looks like a train wreck.
I had the day off, if you can call it that....
Tony
Monday, January 16, 2006 12:44 AM CST Michael's counts are high enough for Chemo Treatment today. Yea.
Tony
Sunday, January 15, 2006 9:00 PM CST Having my family here helped so much this weekend. We were able to get out and run a few tasks we desparately(sp)needed to get done. They were a great help.
I also know it is a moment I will never forget in my life, and the children will never forget also.
If I could only be to my children, as my parents have been to me. They are the best!!!
Tony
Saturday, January 14, 2006 9:54 PM CST Michael and the other two are having a great time with their Nana and Papa and Aunt Sharon. Since they do not live here, we do not see them as often. Michael was going so strong, he did not even have a nap today, which is unusual for him.
They even watched the children and Cindy and I had some time alone together tonight with some freinds. It was nice.
They are here until Monday. Hopefully, Michael goes into the hospital on Monday for Chemo Treatment.
Dad.
Thursday, January 12, 2006 6:14 PM CST Cindy's exceptional organizational skills are unheard of.!!! I'm not sure how she manages schedules for William and Caroline, Michael's schedule, and then somehow manages to allow me to go to work. As we witnessed Monday, we scheduled everything for Michael to be in the hospital, and things changed quickly because of his counts. Well, guess what?! All of the diligent effort she put into getting everything scheduled today for Michael to go to the hospital came falling down again when we discovered his counts are still too low.
So, the good news is he will be feeling pretty good when my mom and dad and sister visit this weekend. The bad news is Monday's schedule and the rest of next week must now be re-constructed so they can check his counts again for a hopeful admission for Chemo.
Chin up :)
Tony
Wednesday, January 11, 2006 6:09 PM CST If all goes well, Michael will go into the hospital tomorrow for Chemo treatment, and be there for a short stay. Watch out Vanderbilt 6B and clinic. I'm sure he will be caring new noisy toys with lots of smiles. He ate very well today for increased energy.. Tony
Tuesday, January 10, 2006 7:37 PM CST I just asked Michael what he did today. He said, "We went to Walgreens to pick up medicine. We had to go to two stores to get the medicine. Ella brought me the singing Christmas Tree back, because Christmas is not over in my mind, and we took Caroline to school."
Nana and Papa from South Carolina and Aunt Sharon from Georgia are coming this weekend to see us. We are excited.
Tony
Monday, January 9, 2006 6:34 PM CST There must be many nice people in Kentucky. Have you seen all the nice notes in the guestbook from Abby's friends? Please visit her website. It's listed at the bottom of this page. I'll probably be adding some more of his friend's websites soon.
Michael was scheduled to be in the hospital tonight for normal treatment. However, when he got to the clinic they tested and his platelets were too low. They sent him home. So, we were actually disappointed(sp) that we were not able to stay on schedule. We'll shift our schedules again. However, it's not unusual. He goes back Thursday and hopefully we can get the Chemo done then.
Tony
Sunday, January 8, 2006 6:26 PM CST We had a great time with Max and Margaret this weekend!! Maybe next time Fran and Little Max can come see Michael. As mentioned previously, they are Caroline and Michael's Godparents. I've known Max since the 8th grade. I think that equates to 27+ years. I can't believe I've put up with him that long, Ha Ha. I really can't imagine someone putting up with me that long.
Michael goes into the hospital tomorrow for treatment.
Tony
Saturday, January 7, 2006 8:30 AM CST Michael is feeling really well the last couple of days. His "Godparent" Max is coming to see Michael today from Charlotte, North Carolina. Max is bringing his daughter, Margaret. We expect a fun time the next 24 hours. Tony
Thursday, January 5, 2006 7:37 PM CST Still at home! Michael had a nice day, and is eating well. Two more nights of shots. He goes into the hospital on Monday for a Chemo treatment, and if we are lucky he will only be there one night.
Did I mention that they had increased his Chemo last visit? What I mean by that is it was scheduled to happen and expected to happen, and they told us that it would happen. We just did not hear them or remember them telling us. So, this last recovery seemed a little tough, and they were not surprised.
If all goes well, I THINK I have a date with Cindy tomorrow(Friday) night. It will seem awkward, like a first date. Ha Ha
Tony
Wednesday, January 4, 2006 7:23 PM CST Michael had a great day at home, so I'm told. This charged me and I set 5 lunch appointments for January and it's only the 4th. Anyone want to go to lunch, my treat? Tony
Tuesday, January 3, 2006 6:22 PM CST Michael is home tonight!!! We appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers from Abby's friends in Kentucky.
Tony
Monday, January 2, 2006 5:21 PM CST Michael is still in the hospital. His counts are still too low for discharge.
I spent the last three nights with him. Cindy is on duty tonight. We are hoping to get him home soon. Caroline starts back to school tomorrow.
Tony
Saturday, December 31, 2005 8:24 PM CST I refuse to spend any more nights in the hospital this year!!! Ha. Ha.
Michael and I will watch the 2006 New Year arrive together in the hospital. Actually I suspect we will both be having wonderful dreams by that time. Yes, there are other places I’d rather be, but not without Michael. I did really want to be in church on January 01, 2006. I don’t see that happening. So if you go, be sure to say a special prayer for Michael and me.
He’s really having a tough time recovering from his last Chemo Treatment. Though not unusual, we fear it could delay or decrease his dosage. He’s done so well.
I’ve said it many times, but you can’t beat the staff at Vanderbilt Children’s. (All Staff). Sorry goes to “Anthony”, but I have to explain to Michael and tell him that someone is to blame for his isolation to his room. So, the next time he sees you, he may be a little upset.
If you have read my previous entries, you know we were here plus or minus 79 nights in 2005. I suspect more in 2006. Tomorrow is just another day, but I’m beginning it with a positive force on all fronts, both personally and professionally. So, watch out! I have so much to be thankful for, and the more I work to make positive things happen, the more they will fall into place for us.
I love you Cindy.
Tony
Friday, December 30, 2005 11:05 PM CST Michael has some new friends at Vanderbilt tonight. It's actually Abby, to be more direct. Based on such quick response that we have received from some of her friends on our website, I know she is special and I will pray for her each night as I pray for Michael. There is plenty of room. Please visit her website and let her know she is on your list.

Thursday, December 29, 2005 7:46 PM CST Michael seemed to be feeling better tonight when I saw him. His counts are still too low to come home, but I can tell he feels better because he’s flirting with the nurses. When we checked him in on Tuesday, they were afraid he had pneumonia (sp). Lung MDs came in and felt like it was most likely asthma(sp, again), or possibly reflux causing the cough. He is getting breathing treatments, and I should have listened to his pediatrician a few weeks ago when she recommended we mention this to the other MDs.
There was only one person with enough courage to tell me that I spelled Michael’s name wrong on my last journal entry (Jack, a friend for 23 years). I guess it’s especially bad since my son is named after me! :). Technically, I did not spell it wrong. It’s just not how we spell it.
Tony
Tuesday, December 27, 2005 9:16 PM CST We had a GREAT Christmas, but he is sick tonight, and in the hospital again.
Happy New Year is something to place very carefully in your minds. In other words, the beginning of a new year and the end of another...does not change what is happening in your lives. It's just another day. It is up to you to change what you do and do not like..
I will be more positive in 2006.
As I look back to the end of 2005, Michael has been in the hospital for more than 75 nights since April 2005. It's not the whole year and I will not do the math for you, but that is a lot of time my whole family could have been together.
I'm not looking for sympathy, but continued prayer. I continue this website for MICHEAL.
Tony
Monday, December 26, 2005 11:00 AM CST NEW PICTURES! We had a very special Christmas. One I will never forget. Michael felt great the whole day, and all three children played with all the toys. Of course, Michael focused in on the NEW Vacumm Cleaner.
It was exciting to see them try and go to bed Christmas Eve, and see them awake VERY early Christmas morning.
We placed raindeer food out, and also some cookies for Santa. The cookies for Santa were gone when we woke up, perhaps even before we went to bed.:)
It surprised me coming from him, but at 4 3/4 years old, Michael is the only one of the three children who asked me,,,"Is Santa Real Dad?"
We have an interesting 2006 ahead of us!!
Tony
Friday, December 23, 2005 2:04 PM CST Michael is home for Christmas!!! I will update everyone on Monday, and with some new pictures!
We are going to have a great time and appreicate it. We will not forget ALL of those who are not home this Christmas.
Tony
Thursday, December 22, 2005 8:45 PM CST If there are no unforeseen instances, Michael will have Chemo treatment tonight/morning about 5:00Am, and we should be out of here by noon. Tony
Wednesday, December 21, 2005 8:57 PM CST William and Mom took care of Michael at the hospital today. William had a good time, because when I picked him up after work, he was asleep before I was out of the parking garage.
Grandmama took care of Caroline.
I'll solicit again. We are in serious need for a new babysitter! Any ideas welcomed.
Tony
Tuesday, December 20, 2005 5:53 PM CST They still need to review the CT Scan in more detail, but preliminary results look good for Michael. This is a nice Christmas gift. Thanks for the prayers. We now want to get home by Friday. Tony
Monday, December 19, 2005 8:36 PM CST We had a great weekend and we are looking forward to getting Michael home Friday for Christmas.
Although William has Bronchitis, and Caroline has a bad ear infection (I think she had some ear drum leakage, but the MD felt it minor compared to other things in our life), we had a great time. Michael and I went to get Grandmamma on Sunday. It was a great 2.5 hours with him going to get her, and a great 2.5 hours coming back with them.
Tonight when I left, Michael was having a great time in the hospital with the many great staff on/in Radiology, Clinic and 06B Vanderbilt.
The surgeon that performed the surgery on Michael dropped by to see him tonight while I was there. I know this Doctor realizes his hands are blessed, but I also know he gets caught up in the day to day performance of his job as all of us do. That is why I know he came by tonight and mentioned that all of the holiday parties he has gone to this year, someone has come up to him and mentioned Michael, and his miracle to date
We do not have results back from the CT Scan as I write this note. I will let you know something as soon as I know.
Tony
Friday, December 16, 2005 6:11 PM CST Cindy and I are headed to my A.G. Edwards Christmas Party in a few minutes. We had planned on spending the night in a hotel and taking a break, but William went to the Doctor today and he has Bronchitis. So, we figured overnight with the Babysitter might be too much with two sick.
I will head to Florence, Alabama on Sunday and bring Cindy’s Mom back to Nashville for the Holidays.
Michael has a CT Scan scheduled for Monday, and will be in the hospital Monday to Friday.
Tony
Wednesday, December 14, 2005 9:50 PM CST In non-MD terms, we were waiting for some results on Michael's heart test(EKG?). It appeared somewhat enlarged on some X-rays and raised some concerns. Although this would not be abnormal for CHEMO, it could significantly impact how we could continue treatment and what drugs they could give him, and thus impact outcomes. So, good news tonight for now. Tony
Tuesday, December 13, 2005 9:07 PM CST I praise folks when they are responsive. I will also point out when they do not respond. We had a very important test done(in our minds) today at Vanderbilt. We did not get a response tonight. No news is good news as they say, but that does not help me sleep tonight!
Tony
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04 PM CST Michael seemed to have a pretty good day based on what I heard. He was in a good mood when I left this morning and in a good mood when I returned. He also does not need a shot tonight.
As I placed him in bed, he pointed out to me that the neighbors had a Snowman out and many reindeer out with lights on them. They were strategically placed so Michael could see them out our window. So, whether it was on purpose or not, it was meant to be. More news to come before we get more Chemo next week.
Tony
Sunday, December 11, 2005 6:56 PM CST Michael is home tonight after spending all weekend in the hospital. He made it home for his Mom's birthday. He has much more energy and feels much less isolated. Since it was an unscheduled visit to the hospital, we were basically stuck in the room to avoid germs, etc. This did not go over well with Michael. His blood pressure was too low at some points, and mine rose each moment. After two nights on a couch, I'm looking forward to my bed tonight and work tomorrow.
Tony
Saturday, December 10, 2005 6:31 PM CST Michael is in the hospital tonight. I am with him. Hopefully, we'll get home tomorrow.
Caroline, Michael, and William wish their Mom a very Happy Birthday on Sunday.
I hope Caroline and William get up LATE and THEN give Mom a big kiss.
Tony
Friday, December 9, 2005 2:39 PM CST Well, we've hit our first "unscheduled" stay in the hospital since Michael's surgery. And that's actually pretty good since surgery was in July. Michael ran high fever today, and he is at the clinic as I speak and waiting for check in to a room. They want him to go 24 hours without fever before he can come home. So, I am watching the other two at the moment, and then I will go switch places with Cindy around 4:00PM and I will stay with him tonight. The message a friend(David Key(Donkey)) left on this website/guestbook this morning got me through the first half of today. For the remainder, another friend just sent this via e-mail and it helped motivate me for the weekend.
If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God.
Tony
Thursday, December 8, 2005 9:06 PM CST Michael is well tonight.
Wednesday, December 7, 2005 9:17 PM CST At one point today, we had Michael in Vanderbilt getting a blood transfusion, Caroline having special testing done at a school here in Nashville regarding her educational progress and what is next for her, and we also had William at the third location going to school as normal for a 3 year old.
I think once we get to soccer/football/cheerleading practice, etc, it's going to be a much easier experience for us.
Michael had blood today and is already responding much better tonight.
Tony
Tuesday, December 6, 2005 7:01 PM CST It comes as no surprise, but Michael will need a blood tranfusion on Wednesday. I know!!!!.....I sound like a broken/scratched record/CD.
He is still all smiles.
MAX, you better make it here to visit this month!
Tony
Monday, December 5, 2005 6:27 PM CST Michael's doing well. I should say, GREAT, given his situation. Dad FINALLY has a cold(i.e., not feeling well and tired). I am amazed I've made it this distance.
Tony
Saturday, December 3, 2005 10:00 PM CST Nobody awakened in our house this morning before 8:15AM. It felt like NOON!,,, and it felt nice.
Michael is doing well. Mom, Dad, Caroline, and William went to see an ICE show today. It was too risky to take Michael OUT, but the rest of us had a great time, and Caroline and William got some deserved personal attention. Once we got home, we watched home movies with Michael and the rest.
Tony
Thursday, December 1, 2005 9:13 PM CST Michael had a good day. We will be losing our baby sitter(Nanny) that we have had for 5 years this month. She was in the NICU when the twins were born. She knows them well. She's been great the whole time, but especially this past year. They all are so close to her, but especially Michael. SO, any suggestions are welcomed as far as replacements.
Tony
Wednesday, November 30, 2005 7:51 PM CST Michael was in a very good mood today, and still is at this time. He ate very well also. Back to the shots tonight. CT Scan scheduled for December 19th. He will also be in the hospital that week for Chemo, which is right before Christmas. We just want him to be home and we need good news on the CT scan.
Tony
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 10:42 PM CST Michael came home tonight. He was quite ill(irritable), but understandably(?) so after Chemo. What a trooper. Forgive my spelling. Just got home from a late work meeting. Time to sleep. T
Monday, November 28, 2005 8:38 PM CST Michael is getting Chemo tonight in the hospital. Mom is with him, and we hope it will be a short stay.
I took Caroline to the Titans game on Sunday. Normally, I would have expected William to want to go with me, but he wanted to help out Mom at the house with the Christmas Tree. I'll straighten him out later. Caroline had a great time. "WE" were seated very near the Cheerleaders. I think the Titans won! :)
Tony
Sunday, November 27, 2005 9:07 AM CST I'm back!
We had a great Thanksgiving. We went to Florence, Alabama on Wednesday evening and stayed until Saturday night. Although the children were a little selective once the turkey dinner was placed in front of them, it was nice to have all of them and Grandma around the dinner table.
Michael has done well the last few days and has not needed his daily shots. He goes back into the hospital on Monday. The good news is it is a short stay. The bad news is that this one makes him a little sick.
Anyway, we are home and William, Caroline, and me(I) are waiting to see what the weather does. We may go to the Titans game if weather permits, while Mom and Michael decorate the Christmas Tree.
I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving. Let's finish 2005 on a Happy Note.
Tony
Tuesday, November 22, 2005 6:11 PM CST Michael's blood counts have gone up since he had a transfusion on Friday. He has had some nausea, etc. However, he seems to be sleeping well, and eating OK. He is still getting shots each night. I was out of town last night. I'm not sure how Mom managed the shot(Thanks Jennifer). If all goes well, we will go to Florence, Alabama for Thanksgiving. I had wanted to go see my family in South Carolina, but did not see how I/we could manage that given the situation.
Everyday is special, but this will be a "Special Thanksgiving Day", and I am SO excited about Christmas with the children and Cindy this year.
I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.
Tony
Saturday, November 19, 2005 7:52 AM CST Michael handled the blood transfusion and platelets(?) well. It did take most of the day, but he did come home on Friday. He slept well last night. Hopefully, the blood, etc will give him strength for Thanksgiving. He goes back in for another chemo treatment the Monday after Thanksgiving. After that round, they will do another CT Scan.
Vanderbilt Medical Center has a newsletter they publish weekly. Michael's picture was in it recently. Go to
www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/reporter/index.html?ID=4389
Article titled "Gaining Strenth"
Cindy and I went out to eat together last night. It was fun. We were home early.
Tony
Thursday, November 17, 2005 8:55 PM CST Michael will be getting some new blood on Friday. Although this has become a normal occurence in our lives, there are risks with blood transfusions. If everything goes well, Michael will have a great weekend.
I appreciate all the support. Tony
Tuesday, November 15, 2005 7:54 PM CST Michael's appetite (?) has picked up a bit. The next week will be when his counts can go down, and most likely they will go down. We are in the "shots" phase. I've got to wake him up in a few minutes to give him the shot. Anyway, the hope is for a quick rebound for Thanksgiving. He is sleeping very well at night, and as you can imagine this helps Mom and Dad.
I want to be here with the children all the time, but somehow Cindy and I will need to get away for at least a weekend very soon if we can work it out. I know we are on the same team, but I feel like we are in a "hurry up offense, rushing to the line of scrimmage without a huddle" mode. We need a timeout to regroup!
Tony
Monday, November 14, 2005 10:05 PM CST Aunt Sharon came by tonight. She is moving from Kansas City to Atlanta and stopped by on her way. She will be much closer to all of her family now, and we are all excited. I hope her friends in Kansas City will continue to keep up with Michael through his website, and follow his progress. My sister Sharon, shares with me in the vision that the glass is half full versus half empty.
Tony
Sunday, November 13, 2005 6:38 PM CST Nice weekend. We spent a good bit of time outside. We had great weather. Michael's not eating much, but has not gotten sick since Friday.
Tony
Friday, November 11, 2005 7:33 PM CST We are home tonight. Again, given the fact that Michael is here, I can't think of a better place to be tonight.
Michael got a little sick tonight, but did eat a little, and more importantly did drink fluids.
Once things settle down, I suspect we'll have some great pictures of Michael's recent visit to Vanderbilt to place on the website.
I think almost everyone at Vanderbilt knows Michael. I was with him for a good bit of time from Thursday night until Friday morning. Michael had to "tour" the hospital(very early in the morning!!). Everywhere we went, someone would say "Hey Michael". I should "team up" with him in my profession.
Tony
Thursday, November 10, 2005 8:38 PM CST For those of you that do not know, my Mom and Dad are the best parents,,,EVER!! I think of them everyday, and I use them as a great model.
For those of you that can, hug your children today, or call them. Also, call your parents.
I picked up this brochure tonight at Vanderbilt and it had a great quote on it. Author unknown, but "Watching your child is like watching your heart walk around outside your body."
Michael had a great day. I'm in the hospital with him tonight, and given the fact that he is here, I cannot imagine any place I would rather be.
Tony
Wednesday, November 9, 2005 6:41 PM CST Michael had another good night last night when I was with him. Mom's been with him today, and says he has had a great time. He went to see a band play music. He got up on stage with them. I believe Mom got pictures.
Looks like he will be in the hospital until Friday. I think he will get another CT Scan in about 4 weeks. I've been wrong once or twice on timing and dates.
Good to hear from buddy in Iraq on the website. Hope all is well with him, and think of all of them every day to come home safely.
Tony
Tuesday, November 8, 2005 8:45 PM CST Michael had a great night Monday night. Today, he had a little problem with the area his IV goes in, which is in his chest. However, once that problem was resolved, he has been in a great mood since. It's 8:45PM, and I hope it is one of those crash and burn deals, meaning I hope he goes straight from serious energy, to SLEEP. He has not had anything much to eat today, but that is not unusual during this phase of Chemo. He rebounds by the end of the week. Overall, he is handling this round very well, which is a good sign for us to continue and avoid delays or extended stays in the hospital. Michael loves all the help on 6B. He got to ride the BIG vacumm again tonight. Ms. Erin, Ms. Megan, and Ms Kathy came to see him tonight. He had been asking for Erin for 48 hours. So, I was glad to see her before bedtime. Thanks to all for reading this website. Please share Michael's story for continued prayer. Let them know how powerful it has been so far. Tony
Monday, November 7, 2005 6:07 PM CST Sorry I have not updated in a couple of days. We had a bad storm that knocked out our cable and internet connection. We had a great weekend. We went out to the farm and we all had a great time. Caroline rode a pony, and Michael rode a tractor(?), or scoop truck as William calls it.. PICTURE ON THIS SITE. Although William loves to look at them, he did not get on the tractor or the pony. We were very impressed at Michael's courage to ride the tractor.
Michael is in the hospital tonight. I went by to see him and he was a little tired because of the long "check in", but he looked well. Chemo begins tonight. Mom is with him tonight, and I will take my turn tomorrow night.
Take care and check out the pictures.

Saturday, November 5, 2005 7:52 AM CST A COUPLE OF HALLOWEEN PICTURES. The weather here is great and we hope to get Michael and the rest out on a friend's farm today to see their animals.
Thursday, November 3, 2005 7:41 PM CST Michael is doing great this week. I think his strength will help him through next week when he gets more Chemo.
All 3 children and Cindy have minor colds/coughs,etc. I'm not sure why or how I've avoided it. It's been a little more than 6 months since this all started. I'm VERY tired. More importantly, I can see Cindy is tired. We need your thoughts and prayers for strength.
The children love "home movies". So, tonight we watched our wedding tape from 13 years ago with the children. The best explanation I could give when they asked "where are we Dad" was "in Mommy's tummy". They bought it, and even better is the fact that Caroline wants to marry me. How could she do better?
Tony
Tuesday, November 1, 2005 6:20 PM CST Michael had a good day and continues to get stronger in preparation for the chemo next week. Cindy said the children were a little WILD this afternoon. I think it was a combination of Cindy being sick, and the children having a little too much sugar from Halloween.
People continue to be very generous and provide us meals. This is so appreciated.
The continued prayers and thoughts mean so much and they are helping so much.
Tony
Monday, October 31, 2005 8:17 PM CST I had the best Halloween I've ever had! Tony
Sunday, October 30, 2005 5:56 PM CST We had a really good weekend. The blood transfusion Michael had Friday helped him with energy this weekend. They are all exited about Halloween tomorrow. Grandmama Perritt headed back to Florence, Alabama today.
Tony
Friday, October 28, 2005 5:44 PM CDT Michael had a blood transfusion today. So, we hope this adds energy for the weekend. They also did and X-Ray on his chest. It was clear. They did give him some medicine.
Caroline and William both stayed home from school today. They also both have deep coughs. No fever, and they probably could have gone to school, but maybe a 3 day weekend for them will help clear the air.
Cindy's mom's knee is much better. However, Grandmama did walk outside yesterday and got lost, forgot where she was, and we could not find her until this morning. She was a little cold, but.... JUST KIDDING!!!! Making sure you are paying attention. She has been very active shopping and helping take care of the children!
Have a great weekend.
Tony
Thursday, October 27, 2005 9:20 PM CDT OK, I did not buy new pants. I DID BUY A LOCK FOR THE LOCKER! :)
Michael was again a little sick tonight. They came and checked his blood today. I suspect he will need new blood tomorrow. They also will be doing an X-Ray on his chest tomorrow to check his lungs. He has had the cough for some time, and right now he is at his lowest point as far as immune system. In between feeling sick, he still manages to smile, and make us smile. I have no question he wants to beat this and will fight the Chemo mentally.
I will update tomorrow after we know more.
Tony
Tuesday, October 25, 2005 8:32 PM CDT Michael coughed all night last night. Given the fact that he sleeps beside me, I had plenty of time to worry about work, life, mortgage, etc. When I woke up very tired, I showered and reached for the LARGEST work pants I could find, since I have gained 15 pounds since April and I refuse to buy larger pants. The pair I found was still very tight. Around lunch, I had a potential client meeting and had about 30 minutes to spare. So, I decided to go the YMCA to work out really quick. Maybe that would relieve some stress, if not my pants. I’ve been limping on a VERY bad knee for about a week. So, I decided to lift some weights instead of run. Once done, I headed back to the locker room, as I always do for a shower. As I opened the locker that my belongings were in, I noticed a tie, a shirt, socks, and shoes. There were no pants!! Someone wanted my LARGEST pants. OK, it’s my fault because I had no real lock. However, I was at the YMCA(I think that means Young Men’s Christian Association!). Maybe they did not want my pants, but my pants had my KEYS in them. Why would they want my keys unless they were going to steal my new car? Well, maybe it’s because my wallet and very NICE wrist watch were in that car!! To make a long story short, I am fortunate to have my car, wallet and watch. The keys and LARGE pants are history. Given the fact that my key chain had my name and picture on it, I felt a little nervous. ONCE I got home to get some new “sort of large” pants, I made it back to work. After work, I got home to realize Cindy’s mom (Grandmama) had somehow hurt her knee very badly while shopping with my wife. Yes, they were shopping, but I was concerned, and her knee looked worse than my knee. So, the fact that she was sitting in MY recliner and could not get up did not bother me. Anyway, Michael had some medicine for his cough waiting at Walgreens and I decided to change the key locks on my house. So, I thought this was a good time for me to get away from the house and shed a few 40 year old tears for myself. Then, the opposite happened….I realized I do not have Cancer. I just had a bad day.
Tony
Monday, October 24, 2005 6:54 PM CDT Michael's blood counts were checked today and he currently does not need a transfusion. The Chemo really made him nauseous (SICK!) this weekend. He seems to be better now. We should have two more weeks before we return to the hospital.
I need to ask Cindy when his next CT Scan is. I'm sure we are due one soon.
All three children are enjoying Grandmama being here.
Tony
Saturday, October 22, 2005 9:05 PM CDT Michael had a nice day after having a rough evening yesterday. No nausea today. He ate well. Grandmama Perritt arrived today and he was very excited. He repeated all day to me..."Is Grandmama mommy's Mother?".
William went to Target store today and got a toy he had been talking about all week. We told him he had to use the money in his Piggy Bank. It cleaned him out, and now he is reaching into my pocket as he hugs me. He got 15 cents back from the cashier, and he came home and put it back in his bank. It was neat to see him realize he had to give up his money to get the toy.
Tony
Friday, October 21, 2005 6:58 PM CDT Michael has been sick today. He's "gagged" since I got home, but is feeling a little better now. We hope for a good weekend. They will come check his blood counts on Monday. Other than the nausea, his spirits are "strong" and he cannot wait to dress up for Halloween.
I am sure he will have a big smile Saturday morning since Grandmama Perritt will be here from Florence for a visit with us.
Have a great weekend.
Tony
Thursday, October 20, 2005 10:29 PM CDT Things are going well for Michael. Cindy and Tony had a date tonight, without children. We had a great time.
It is a wierd feeling to run into people that have no idea what is going on in our lives.. They are concerned, but,,,,,as Cindy and I have discussed, "the world does not stop because we are having trouble in our lives"...
Tony
Tuesday, October 18, 2005 7:02 PM CDT Well, I will never understand the Chemo schedule for Michael. After one night, and two full days, they said he could come home tonight. As I said, I do not understand the schedule, but I was not asking many questions as I wheeled Michael out the door(and the door did not have time to hit us). We are home tonight. Tony
Monday, October 17, 2005 9:01 PM CDT We were barely able to get Michael admitted in the hospital for treatment today. OK, I know that sounds wierd, but...we want him to stay on schedule as much as possible, and his blood counts were just high enough today to stay. Otherwise, we would have been delayed a week.
When I left tonight, he was in a good mood, and I just spoke to his Mom and it sounded like he was having a couple of visitors that are admitted as he is.
William and Caroline got the flu shot today. Michael will get one when his counts are on the rise.
Please stay tuned.
Tony
Monday, October 17, 2005 7:39 AM CDT Mihcael goes into the hospital today. This is hoefully just for two nights. However, this is the round that makes him feel bad. We will keep you posted. Tony
Thursday, October 13, 2005 9:15 PM CDT Michael's blood counts are good tonight. This means no shots tonight. Yea!!...for Michael and Dad, and even Mom. Mom has even conceded to giving a couple of the shots! Michael goes back into the hospital next week.
We have a huge wonderful book of scripture to choose from, but I keep coming back to this verse! I think this is my 3rd time on this website, but
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Wow! For all of you that read this website daily, what else is there to say?
Tonight, I'm going to specifically pray for all the folks in Vanderbilt Hospital as we sleep at home with Michael.
Tony
Wednesday, October 12, 2005 6:27 PM CDT Well, I just found out I can't keep track of time. Michael goes back into the hospital next week, not the week after. He is feeling pretty good, and next week is a shorter stay. However, the bad news is this round does make his stomach upset and provides for a couple of bad experiences. Aunt Sharon will be coming to Nashville this weekend. Tony
Tuesday, October 11, 2005 6:49 PM CDT Nothing really new today on Michael. He is doing well.
If Michael stays healthy, Caroline and I are going to visit the North and South Carolinas this weekend. My Dad is a retired minister, but is preaching at a church that he lead for 19 years this weekend. He preached many more years than that in other places, but it is their Homecoming weekend in Hartsville, SC. It is also the church I was basically raised in since 8 years old. I have not been back since he retired, and that was the early 90s. I am looking forward to hearing his message and seeing old friends.
Tony
Monday, October 10, 2005 6:35 PM CDT New Pictures!
Michael had a very good day after having a pretty restless night. We are still giving him shots each day for his counts. He is eating well. If all goes well, two more weeks before we are back in the hospital for Chemo, I think. The timing can get confusing. It will be October before you know it :) :)
Caroline and William both had wet beds last night, but they really have gotten off to a pretty good start.
Tony
Sunday, October 9, 2005 9:07 AM CDT NEW PICTURES OF MICHAEL AND HIS VACUMMS! Michael is having a nice weekend. He is sleeping much better, and this makes us all feel better! Tony
Thursday, October 6, 2005 6:17 PM CDT Michael is a little stronger today, after another difficult night. If we can get through this week, we may be OK until next treatment 2 weeks from now. As I write this however, Caroline is Sniffling(sp), which means she has collected some germs at school to bring home. I think it would be too optimistic to blame it on allergies at this point. You may have watched the news lately, and not really paid attention to the fear of the "bird flu", or whatever they call it being a potential epidemic on humans, but it particularly concerns me with all children, not just Michael. Stay tuned...I hope to get some new pictures on the website this week. Tony
Wednesday, October 5, 2005 10:03 PM CDT We had a tough night last night. As soon as I can remove the toothpicks holding my eyelids up, I'll finish this e-mail. :)
We did need a blood transfusion today!! This was no surprise to Cindy or me. We are kind of getting the feel of "how Michael feels". Praises go to the "Clinic 6th floor staff" of Vanderbilt. Given personal circumstances today, Dad was forced to be with Michael at the hospital during work hours, and they helped me. I'm quiet when I'm there, but I do appreciate all.
William is 3 for 3 nights without a diaper, and DRY! Caroline made it last night, but needed/insisted a diaper tonight.
Thanks for praying and following this website for Michael. I read your comments EACH night.
Tony
Tuesday, October 4, 2005 9:15 PM CDT Michael was a little tired today. Nothing too serious, but we've asked that they come check his blood tomorrow versus Thursday.
William is 2 for 2 nights with dry bed. Caroline doesn't want her brother to "out shine" her, so as of this moment, she is without diaper tonight.
Tony
Monday, October 3, 2005 7:40 PM CDT Aunt Barbara is here to see Michael and the rest, and will be here to help us until Thursday. Michael had his blood checked today, and we have not heard back from them, a good sign. His cough continues, but with no fever. They come back and check again on Thursday.
We are in the shot phase. i.e. I am giving him a shot each night.
William, Michael's younger brother, went his FIRST night last night without a diaper, and MADE IT! I was pretty impressed! Caroline is not quite ready for some reason.
Tony
Sunday, October 2, 2005 7:20 PM CDT We had a good weekend. Michael still has a cold that he cannot shake, but otherwise, he is good. They will come to the home tomorrow to take some blood to check his counts.
Tony
Friday, September 30, 2005 9:15 PM CDT Michael is home tonight, and we look forward to a great weekend together with family. Tony
Thursday, September 29, 2005 8:01 PM CDT I'm not at the hospital tonight, but it sounds like Michael had a a pretty good day, and is the entertainment tonight on 6B as he helps the men clean the floors with the VACUMM.
I can only say thanks again to all the people working on 6B. Of course THE NURSES, but also the other folks that help out each day in other ways, and Michael can tell you all of their names....Mike, Donnie, Gary, etc. I'm sure I missed some, or have the names wrong, but we know who you are and Michael will straighten out the names for me.
If all goes well, Michael will be home tomorrow for the weekend. Yea
Anyway, it was good to see William and Caroline tonight. It had been since Tuesday morning. Soon, if we can get Michael home, I'll see Cindy(SYP).
PS. Happy Birthday to Jamie Mayberry at A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. She is a "Champ" at work.
Tony
Wednesday, September 28, 2005 6:38 PM CDT Chemo is brutal!! I can only pray that we are placing Michael through it for a great reward and purpose. In my mind, I feel strongly that it is for a purpose. More so every day. It's so obvious how bad it makes him feel so quickly, from me leaving this morning to coming back tonight.
So, let's get out of here on Friday, keep him well, rebound the next three weeks, and come back for more...
Thanks for the continued prayers. We've had many miracles so far.
Tony
Tuesday, September 27, 2005 5:41 PM CDT Day two for Michael in the hospital… So far, he is doing well. His appetite has dropped some, and he does look a little tired from the Chemo, but all other is well. Mom stayed last night. I will be here the next two nights, and then Mom will take the last night.
Michael met #88 of the Titans today. Of course, Dad was not here, again. I'm sure he did not look as good as Danika Patrick, the female race car driver, but I certainly could have benefited (or my career) from meeting Mr. Kinney.
Michael also got to ride on a very big vacumm tonight. Pictures to come soon.
I’ve lost count on how many times we’ve been here since April. Somewhere between 9-11 visits.
Tony
Tuesday, September 27, 2005 10:09 AM CDT Update later tonight. Our e-mail was down at home last night. Everything went OK yesterday. Tony
Saturday, September 24, 2005 8:17 AM CDT Michael goes into the hospital on Monday for another round of Chemo treatment(5 days. 4 nights). He is feeling well and we expect to have a good weekend.
Thursday, September 22, 2005 9:18 PM CDT All the children had a great day today. Dad's looking hard for a "2nd wind of strength", and I suspect Mom is too. Tony
Wednesday, September 21, 2005 6:23 PM CDT We'll take baby steps forward!!! Michael's CT Scan results came back and showed no signs of new tumor growth today. They will be doing this every 6-8 weeks going forward for as long as we can see. However, today is a good day. My concern is to keep Michael strong and get him through the very difficult Chemo treatment. His "will" is very strong. So we just need to use common sense and take every precaution to keep him from germs. Some things will be unavoidable. i.e. - The other two children have to go to school. They will be around germs. People will visit. We just have to be careful, and if you are reading this e-mail, please help us in this effort. It provides him strength to see people that are pulling for him, and we need that variable and we encourage it, but help us in being cautious. It's so important. Chemo is powerful and dangerous.
His cold and cough are better today. He will be in the hospital next Monday for 5 days of Chemo. So, here we come 6B nurses....!!!!
Thanks, Tony
Tuesday, September 20, 2005 6:57 PM CDT Michael went and got some more medicine at the hospital today, and did not have to stay. Yea! Anytime that happens, we are relieved. Other than the bad cold and cough, he is doing well. It's hard to believe we are working on 10 weeks since he had surgery. I wish that meant we only had 38 weeks of chemo left and then we were DONE, but we have a long road ahead, even if it is better than the past. Let's just get through the next few weeks and enjoy Barney Christmas in December versus July. We have not heard any results from his CT Scan he had yesterday. I will keep you posted. Cindy had lunch with with some of her family from New Orleans today. They hope to get back in soon. I saw a couple of friends from Louisville and Chicago today. It was good to see them in person. Tony
Monday, September 19, 2005 6:37 PM CDT Michael's day started at 9:00AM with a CT scan. Because of the congestion in his chest from a cold, this took longer than expected, and delayed the ultra sound for another day. Once he got home at 2:00PM, we had to turn back around and take him back around 4:00PM because his fever spiked to 103. They gave him some antibiotics, medicine, and fluids thru his IV. His fever came down to 99+ and we were able to come home for the night. We also avoided the emergency room thanks to the 6th floor clinic staff. He will need to go back tomorrow for some more medicine.
I also saw some friends from work at the hospital tonight. Their son had some surgery at Vanderbilt, and we will pray for them tonight.
Tony
Sunday, September 18, 2005 7:35 PM CDT Michael has a CT Scan and an Ultra Sound done Monday(tomorrow). Nothing expected. It is just to see what is going on and avoid any surprises. We will have to shuffle between Cindy and me because we are without help.
We had a great weekend. Michael does have a cold, and has a pretty bad cough with it, but so far no fever. Hopefully they will give us a break tomorrow on the shots until next week when he goes back in for more chemo. Michael is sort of getting accustomed to the shots, but not me.
Tony
Friday, September 16, 2005 10:05 PM CDT Michael's blood counts are low enough that we need to continue giving him shots, and I hate that part of it. We had some very nice support from neighbors on both sides today. I know that they care about Michael and our family. Friends and family have been strong through this experience. We need to keep praying for Michael. Let's not forget what got him here today. I strongly believe in that faith. Michael has a STRONG purpose. I'm interrupted by him as I speak and ......as I try to write this e-mail. What would normaly be a nuisance, is a pleasure tonight..
Have a great weekend...
Tony
Wednesday, September 14, 2005 7:18 PM CDT Michael gets his blood counts tested tomorrow. I will let you know the results. I suspect they will go well based on his behavior. Ms Sharon came to see Michael today at home. He was very excited to see her. Michael gets a CT done next Monday just to check for any surprises. If all goes well, we will not go back into the hospital until the 26th.
Tuesday, September 13, 2005 6:08 PM CDT Michael had a great day.
I guess he's doing so well, nobody is calling and telling us how long to give shots, or checking his blood counts. Cindy will be calling tomorrow to find out our next short term steps!
Tony
Monday, September 12, 2005 6:37 PM CDT Besides a scrape on the knee, Michael had a good weekend. Nothing exciting, other than we were "at home" and the Clemson Tigers won their game. I did take William to ride "Thomas the Train"(real train) on Sunday. He enojoyed that very much.
I will keep you posted with Michael's progress.
Tony
Friday, September 9, 2005 8:42 PM CDT Enjoying every minute with Michael. Caroline and William had a great first week at school. Both were in new classrooms, and it looks like they fit in well and BEHAVED. If not, I suspect the teachers will read my comments here and let me know. I'm back to giving Michael shots. Many more between now and whenever, but it does not get easier with repetition. Enjoy your weekend. Provided we are not in the hospital, I will. Tony
Wednesday, September 7, 2005 6:35 PM CDT Cautiously optimistic!!
Michael is home. He stayed only one night in the hospital. He did get sick last night from the Chemo, but he is doing fine today. Mom is very tired!!
I feel guilty tonight as I worry about my family issues, while at the same time so many people are struggling from this natural disaster from Hurricane Katrina. We are blessed.
For Michael, once again repeated, the goal for Michael is to avoid Germs, Germs, and Germs. I sprayed all of the Lysol, and used multiple hand soaps, before he came home. I will get more.
The other two children had a great day at school today. Given the circumstances, I was given the duty of dropping them off and picking them up today. Trust me; having an employer is better than what Moms or stay at home Dads have to deal with each day, IN MY OPINION.
Tony.
Tuesday, September 6, 2005 6:12 PM CDT Michael entered the hospital today in great spirits. He was having a good ole time with some of the nurses tonight when I left. All are amazed and enjoying his personality.
As good as he is doing, reality of the unknown future hits me really hard when I pull into the parking deck. The feeling of being hit really hard in the stomach, bringing nausea, happens every time I go to the hospital. Where has time gone, and even I am amazed at how we have gotten through since late April? Faith, prayer, and understanding friends are truly holding us up.
Chin up!
Tony
Sunday, September 4, 2005 5:50 PM CDT Michael has had a very good weekend. We went to the zoo yesterday, and he enjoyed all the animals and we had a picnic. After the zoo, we decided to load up the car and drive to Alabama to see Grandmama, where Michael got to jump a little bit on a trampolene, and swung/swang some. We spent the night with her and came back home today.
Michael goes in the hospital on Tuesday for a scheduled 3 day visit.
Tony
Thursday, September 1, 2005 8:35 PM CDT I thank all of you who check this website EVERY DAY. This is "Michael's" website. So, eventually(soon) I need to update "as needed". To what regularity that is I do not know. You tell me. I am so thankful for those that listen, but this is "not my diary".
Michael had a great day. I think every day is a great day with Michael. I'm not discounting the wonderful days with Caroline and William who/whom start at a new school within the next two weeks. I struggled taking Caroline today to meet her new teachers and leaving Michael at home. They were very nice, but it hurt knowing he will not be there.
William meets his teachers tomorrow.
Tony
Wednesday, August 31, 2005 6:03 PM CDT Cindy's family that lives in New Orleans is out. They are in Houston. All belongings left behind, including business and personal. However, they are safe. We pray for them, and are thankful they are safe.
No more shots until next Chemo round for Michael. He is “on fire” he is so happy right now. However, Mom has taken care of all 3 children the last two days with no help. So, I’m getting “a look” and I am afraid to speak to her. I’d better go and help with the children.
Tony
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 7:42 PM CDT Good day for Michael. He's done well with germs as I said, but the other two children start back to school next week. I have my imaginary GERM garden hose at the door.
We are still thinking about all the other folks in need after Hurricane Katrina. We are 8+ hours drive from the coast/ocean, and it was pretty rough here last night. I hope folks stay calm and humane(sp) under their situation.
I was driving in a community not close to my house today because of work, and passed by a church that had a sign out front and it said that Sunday's serman would be about "Why bad things happen to good people." I most likely will not make it to that church, but it sparked my interest, and I'm sure it has other people.
Tony
Monday, August 29, 2005 7:28 PM CDT Things are going very well the last several days/weeks for Michael. I wish I could give a better update, but I've felt he has done so well the last few days, I've focused a little more on work so he could have his "stringy noodles...i.e. Raman Noodles 10 for $1.00)..
Cindy's mom is doing well at home in Alabama.
Thanks for taking care of our friends and family in New Orleans.
As I said, things are going well because you are all praying and believe in the power of prayer. Do not lose this focus for Michael please.
We should all take it as it relates to the situation in the scripture, but a nice verse "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7
Tony
Sunday, August 28, 2005 7:34 PM CDT We've made it to Sunday night, and Michael feels fine. He gets his blood counts tested again in the morning.
Tonight, we'll pray for some family in New Orleans associated with Arnauds Restaurant.
Tony
Friday, August 26, 2005 6:44 PM CDT Aunt Barbara's last day with us is today. She leaves in the morning. I'm not sure why her bags are packed and she is standing by the door tonight :)
Just kidding, she is actually out with Cindy tonight, and I am flooding the children with movies, food, sleep medicine, and the "time out" corner. They can clean their teeth tomorrow!
Michael had his blood count tested yesterday. The counts are down, but not out of the ordinary. However, I hate it when the nurse says to Cindy "call us if you need to come in over the weekend"....
Hope for a great weekend.
Tony
Thursday, August 25, 2005 7:38 PM CDT Good news. We are still at home. Michael seems to be fighting his cold pretty well on his on. Aunt Barbara is still here helping us until Saturday morning. If all goes well, I believe we have about two more weeks at home before another Chemo treatment requiring hospital stay.
Although we are going through Chemo, when I look back to 5 weeks ago today when he had his 12-14 hour surgery, I never thought I'd see Michael enjoy being at home and playing like he is now. Who knows what the future holds, but he is happy and comfortable, and playful. He is laughing and has a since of humor, not only smiling.
Cindy's mom has been released from the hospital and is back home in Alabama. Tired, but doing well.
Thanks for keeping in touch with us.
Tony
Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:08 PM CDT Michael spent the day with Aunt Barbara. It's only day 1 for Aunt Barbara, but she is holding up well keeping all three children. She obviously sees a different MIchael since her last visit.
Michael has a cold that we are monitoring very closely. Things can turn so quickly for him during Chemo. Germs, Germs, Germs. Immune system is something we should appreciate more....His appetite is still strong.
Dad is struggling each night to give Michael his shot.
Monday, August 22, 2005 7:06 PM CDT They came to the house and checked Michael's blood counts this morning. So far so good. They will check them again on Thursday.
Michael went to the swingset today, and even went down the slide, after climbing up himself.
Aunt Barbara arrives tonight at 10:45PM. They will all be excited when they wake up in the morning and see her.
Michael had a visitor/friend/fan from Illinois(sp) visit him in person today that has been following him very closely through this website. It was a nice visit.
Tony
Sunday, August 21, 2005 6:33 PM CDT Michael had a great weekend. He is walking much better, and he talked more than he has in a long time, or probably ever. In fact, it went well into last night. However, he just wanted to talk.
We were able to get Cindy's mom checked into a hospital in Nashville tonight. This should help us all since she is closer to us.
Tony
Friday, August 19, 2005 7:04 PM CDT OK, as I review my journal from last night I said, "I know I have to wait, but I can’t wait until I can sit down at a nice dinner overlooking the beach/ocean with my wife, and only think about her and how much we have to be thankful for."
Tonight, I realize I should have said “overlooking the beach/ocean/INLET/LAKE/RIVER/CREEK/KIDDIE POOL/TUB/GOLD FISH AQUARIUM/MUD PUDDLE". You get the point.
Michael is home tonight. So, we hope to have a nice weekend.
I hope you a great weekend, and pray for Michael and our family each day and especially Sunday.
Tony
Thursday, August 18, 2005 8:52 PM CDT Michael had a pretty good day. He had a rough night with mom on Wednesday night, but I'm sure things will change tonight with dad. It’s 9:00PM and he is sleeping peacefully. He is eating well. If all goes well, and no fever tomorrow, he may get to go home(Friday). His cheeks and chin are starting to actually show some resemblance of mine. In other words, there's some meat(or fat in my case) showing on his bones.
If I understand correctly, we will be done with chemo until the day after Labor Day. However, because of the effects of Chemo, it would be yet another miracle, to avoid being back in the hospital before then because of blood counts, or fever, etc. In other words, I’ll concede a little realization here.
We are very fortunate that Aunt Barbara is coming to help us next week. If all goes well, we will get Cindy’s mom from hospital in Alabama to hospital in Nashville. This doesn’t make it easy, just easier.
Continued thanks for all prayers, messages, food, etc.
I know I have to wait, but I can’t wait until I can sit down at a nice dinner overlooking the beach/ocean with my wife, and only think about her and how much we have to be thankful for.
Tony
Wednesday, August 17, 2005 7:20 PM CDT Michael slept really well last night. However, I know because I was attempting sleep on the sofa, and it was not working very well.
As far as today, his appetite has slipped a little, but this is to be expected. The goal is to keep him well and away from germs. Having said that, we felt compelled to take his brother and sister down to the hospital to see him tonight. It was good for him to see them. Unfortunately, Dad gets a little stuffy with 3 kids and a mom in one little hospital room.
Mom is with him tonight. Tony
Tuesday, August 16, 2005 6:35 PM CDT Michael has had a good day in the hospital today. So far, so good on the Chemo. He did look a little pale to me tonight when I arrived, but this can be expected. I will be with him tonight, and will have a better update tomorrow for you. Cindy's mom is still in the hospital in Alabama. Tony
Monday, August 15, 2005 8:19 PM CDT I got Michael started in the clinic this morning for check into the hospital. He did great while I was there, and from what I can tell he did great all day. Before surgery, he weighed 43-44 pounds with the tumor. It was 10-12 pounds. You do the math, but he has eaten so well since then, he weighed 40 pounds when I checked him in today. The nurses on the 6th floor(both clinic and 6B) were pleased to see him doing so well. In fact, Dad, Caroline, and William went and had dinner with mom at a place right beside the hospital tonight(Sportsman's), and Michael was OK with the nurses. He starts his heavy chemo tonight, so we hope he handles it well. It's hard to believe that all of this has happened since April 25th, which is when I was called home from St. Louis. It actually had been going on before that day, but it seems like forever, and especially since we have had him home for 2-3 weeks feeling well lately. Sorry for no paragraph breaks. I'm not sure where they should have been. Tony
Sunday, August 14, 2005 7:48 PM CDT Michael goes back into the hospital tomorrow for a five day treatment(we hope only 5 days). Mom came home tonight and they were all very excited. Cindy's mom is still in the hospital in Alabama. Our goal is to get her up here this week, and move forward in getting her on both feet in the next few weeks to help us move forward with everything. Tony
Saturday, August 13, 2005 8:57 PM CDT New Pictures of Michael after surgery)(08/14/05) You are never given more than you can handle as long as you believe, and I believe because look where we have come, but this was a tough day. I'll hopefully rest tonight and have my "chin up" tomorrow. Cindy's mom is not having the best time in the hospital in Alabama, and it's difficult for me to help in any way right now. Where do you place your focus? This is even a more difficult battle for Cindy. Michael's battle starts back on Monday. Michael had probably his worst day yet since being home the last two weeks. He was just uncomfortable, and I had to deal with him while entertaining the other two children. Overall however, HE HAD A GREAT WEEK AND YOUR PRAYERS ARE WORKING.
Friday, August 12, 2005 8:31 PM CDT Well, this is my 3rd night with the children alone, while Cindy is in Florence with her mom at the hospital. The children are doing well, but the laundry is getting a little backed up because I normally have the time to take care of it when Cindy is here taking care of the children while I wash the clothes(ha), and they are getting tired of Happy Meals(well, not really), and they have worn the same clothes for three days(this could be true).
They had a great time with Nana and Papa, who made it home safely today in South Carolina.
If my "old run down car" would hold all three of them, I would take them to Florence, Alabama tomorrow. i.e. This is a joke.
Lots of prayers for Cindy's mom tonight, and of course Michael.
Tony
Thursday, August 11, 2005 7:29 PM CDT I took Michael to the MD this morning. It was the surgeon that performed his removal. He cleared Michael for Chemo on Monday, and for the most part blessed us and wished us never to see him in his office again. I thanked him and told him how much I appreciated his efforts, and success....several times.
We also briefly visited "the clinic" on the 6th floor. I think they were pleased with Michael's progress. They too, are very comforting folks, as are the 6B folks.
Cindy's mom is not well, and needs prayer. Cindy is still in Florence, Alabama. Lots of “sleep medicine” for the children tonight, since I have them. Just KIDDING,,,, or not!!!
Two quotes of the day from an 83 year old lady. “Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.”, and then she said.... “Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance” Tony
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 6:07 PM CDT Michael's CT Scan came back OK on his lymph nodes, etc. We will be seeing the surgeon for a normal post visit in the morning. He is having a great week!!
The bad news is that Cindy's mom is back in the hospital having more test done. She is in Alabama, and we were fortunate enough to be in a situation this week where Cindy was able to go down there today.
However, other people have problems in the world. The perfect example for me today/tonight is the fact that(if I heard correctly) Christopher Reeve's, (i.e. Superman) wife has lung cancer. She appeared to be so dedicated to "Superman" and their children, and now this for her.
Tony
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 7:10 AM CDT We have not heard the results of the CT Scan, but expect to today(Wednesday). Other than that, Michael is enjoying grandparent's visit. Tony
Monday, August 8, 2005 7:15 PM CDT Michael had a CT scan done today, and he had to be put into a light sleep for the procedure. We do not have the results back yet, and I will share them when I know them. It was to check the lymph nodes. We have one week from today before Chemo starts back, and he goes back into the hospital…..
Nana and Papa came today. I was at work, but I heard his smile was VERY WIDE when they arrived.
I intend to enjoy this week with Michael and my parents. My parents are celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary tomorrow. I won’t share their age, but their marriage has me beat by 40 years. For those of you who do not know, my Dad (and his wife) is/are a retired minister(s), and have said many prayers for his/their children, and they worked. They continue to pray for their grandchildren, and they will work
Smiles from Michael
Tony
Saturday, August 6, 2005 7:44 PM CDT Michael is recovering nicely from the surgery, and is having a great weekend so far. In fact, he is getting up off the couch and bed by himself without asking for help. His walk is still a little unsteady, but I see that coming along in the next few days. It almost looks like he is over compensating. By that, I mean he is sort of leaning backwards as if he had to hold a 12 pound tumor up in his belly....and it is not there.
Continued thanks for all the prayers and thoughts and e-mails, and food, etc. It helps us get through this difficult time. Also, we miss our friends(SORT OF if you know what I mean) on 6B Vanderbilt, but we will see you soon.
Finally as I have mentioned before, he is now eating very well, and sleeping well. The sleep part is helping Mom and Dad. OK, I will confess that I placed his bed in our room next to our bed...but it works..and I do not feel guilty for putting him there..
Have a great weekend and keep Michael on the prayer list.
Tony
Thursday, August 4, 2005 6:25 PM CDT Michael has had a good 48 hours. He is eating well, and sleeping well, and getting better each day from surgery. I think the next 7-10 days will be enjoyable before he returns for Chemo.
We also just found out Nana and Papa are coming to see him Monday. I think we will wait until then to tell him, based on last time(concept of time). We are all looking forward to their visit.
Tony
Tuesday, August 2, 2005 10:04 PM CDT I had some “reprieve” from our situation tonight, and it was fun. I was able to go to a minor league baseball game with some new friends from work this evening. It helped me relax a little. Now, we need to get Mom (Cindy) out.
Michael continues to eat very well. He is also VERY DEMANDING. Part of it is because 1) we(I) have spoiled him (mostly my fault), 2) partly because he just had MAJOR surgery, and 3) partly because Michael is SPECIAL.
OK, blame it all on me. The fact that he is this way reminds me of everything his teachers/therapists have faced when he was healthy, and I take it as a welcomed sign. Michael is coming back, more "stubborn" and determined than ever.
Tony
Monday, August 1, 2005 7:37 PM CDT Michael did well eating and drinking today. He also went to the doctor. They will do a CT Scan next week, and then two weeks from today(Monday), they will begin his Chemo treatment. He will have a 5 day minimum hospital stay at that time. He seemed to have much more personality today. I think he is still recovering from the massive surgery. Tony
Sunday, July 31, 2005 6:20 PM CDT Michael had a good Sunday. I took Grandmommy home today. Michael goes back to the doctor and clinic tomorrow(Monday) to check things out. I will update you on that tomorrow. Tony
Saturday, July 30, 2005 9:53 PM CDT NEW PICTURES) Michael had a very good day. He ate and had some fluids. A great day for Michael.
A guy I have known for 25 years had a "surprise" 40th birthday party in Charlotte tonight(MAX)). We were invited and there are very few reasons why I would have missed it. It hurt me not being there.
We meet many new friends every day, but you cannot replace someone that has put up with you for that long!! Max and Fran Redic are Michael's Godparents.....
Happy Birthday Max Redic! Tony
Friday, July 29, 2005 8:05 PM CDT Michael had a pretty good day at home today considering he had major surgery a week ago. He had a few visitors, and we appreciate them. He also saw his neighbors tonight.
My goal is to get some new pictures on the website tonight or Saturday for everyone to see him.....
Dad/Tony
Thursday, July 28, 2005 7:10 PM CDT First, Michael came home tonight! Yea!!!
They will be checking Michael’s lymph nodes next week via CAT scan to be sure there is no origin from them, they are not enlarged, etc. If this shows nothing then,,,,…..
I’m going to refer back to one of my original comments 90+ days ago. We are cautiously optimistic. My glass is half full for many reasons, faith in prayer being the biggest. Cindy talked to the MDs after they met today. There appears to be a total resection (one piece removal I guess?) of the tumor. Also after analysis and meetings from the “tumor board”, there appears to be no visible cancer around what they removed, which I believe surprised some of them. Some of the tumor they removed had died, but there was some living. Since the removal was successful, rather than immediately starting Michael on radiation, their plan is to treat Michael with 48 weeks of Chemotherapy, and then hit him with less radiation. If I repeated this all correctly, and we understood them correctly, we still obviously have a long road ahead of us, but this is great news tonight, given our situation!! Radiation first would not be as positive as trying more Chemo first. It would have many more negatives…
Think of Michael’s smile tonight. Tony
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 6:26 PM CDT As we have told the MDs, we do not want Michael to leave the hospital until he is ready. However, I can't wait to have him at home for a few days....everyone together. I can't wait for him to see his brother and sister and vice versa. I’d kind of like to see his wonderful mom also.
It's difficult to imagine that it is almost August. I have nothing much to report tonight, but please continue to spread the word about Michael. Look how it has helped him so far. I hope his life story has enlightened your life. I'm not quitting so you please help me let others see Michael's miracle story.
Tony
Tuesday, July 26, 2005 8:08 PM CDT Mom and Dad took Michael for a ride in the wagon this evening. We went to see a couple of the nurses staying in our vacation home (Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Floor 6B, Great pillows, by the way). They loved seeing Michael and he loved it also.
They took a few tubes (as Michael would call it) out of Michael today. He also ate some solid foods....potatoe stars (OK, no Dan Q. political jokes on the spelling of this vegetable)…:)
Let’s hope Mom makes it through tonight. I’ll give her a break tomorrow night.
Tony
Monday, July 25, 2005 8:25 PM CDT Michael walked around the hallway floor twice today. It was tiring, but very good for him and the doctors thought it was a great sign of recovery from his surgery.
There were some hints of possibly going home by the very end of the week if things continued to improve.
I think even some of the doctors are amazed by what Michael can achieve...Thanks to all the powers...
Tony
Sunday, July 24, 2005 8:38 PM CDT It was a pretty good day for Michael. He sat up in the chair for several hours. As we all know, he is facing a big battle, but even recovering from this type of operation is quite difficult. HOWEVER, Mom and I managed to get some smiles out of him today.
The fact that Michael is at Vanderbilt provides us some "hungry young doctors" which is great, but they come by before 5:00AM to get ahead of the game, and it required Dad to get up..... As tired as I was the last two mornings, I admired it.
Tony
Saturday, July 23, 2005 6:11 PM CDT Michael slept well last night. It is the first time in quite a while he has slept on his back. He has had to sleep on his side because of the tumor.
He has been a little weak and appeared a little sore/exhausted on day 2 following sugery.
Otherwise, he looks better than he has in a long time in his face. Tony
Friday, July 22, 2005 6:08 PM CDT Michael is no longer in intensive care and now has his own room. It is a different floor than we are accustommed to for our past 6 visits, but they appear to be very nice. Several of his 6th floor nurses came by to see him last night(midnight), and some others from the clinic today.
He has been asking for milk since last night. Because of the type of surgery he went through, he has not been able to drink or eat. However, it is a great sign that he is asking for it, and he is very persistant(sp), and therefore driving me crazy.
He really looks great considering his day yesterday. I wish I could wake up and be 10-12 lbs lighter... Oh well, it might take a little longer, but if he can do it, so can I.
It's not time to stop asking for blessings in Michael's life. As someone mentioned today on their comments on this website, it should give an added "boost" to what we appreciate, and pray for each day in prayer groups.
I generally try not to pinpoint help we receive because ultimately so many are left out, but I have to thank Ms. Trousdale and Ms. Freeman from Florence, Alabama for being with us throughout the long day yesterday and into today.
Stay with us. We have a long way to go, but what a blessing yesterday was for me.
Tony
Thursday, July 21, 2005 11:20 PM CDT After 13 hours of surgery, they were able to remove Michael's tumor in what they think is ONE piece. They did have to remove his bladder and prostate. Both issues we can handle down the road. They had not weighed it yet, but the guess was it was 10-12 pounds. We have many battles facing us(radiation/chemo, etc), but today was yet another miracle in Michael's life. Anyone reading this website that does not feel the power of prayer, lets' talk. We are still cautious, but let's thank the one providing this miracle today. I felt very confident all day.
We are tired and we will be in intensive care tonight.
Lots of love and thanks for past and continued prayers.
Tony
Tuesday, July 19, 2005 5:26 PM CDT Michael will be admitted tomorrow in preparation for surgery on Thursday. Here is my prayer…..Tony Dear Lord, When there were questions concerning his breathing, you taught him to breathe.
Amen.
Monday, July 18, 2005 8:56 PM CDT Mom and Dad actually had a date tonight. We went out to dinner. It was as relaxing as it could be. I'm not sure who yawned more, but we still had fun. Michael had a pretty good day. This is a big week for us. It is obviously difficult to focus on anything else....Pray for Michael and the Doctors to be watched over on Thursday. They will surely need to focus and be on top of their game...... Tony
Sunday, July 17, 2005 0:33 AM CDT I met with some/many friends tonight that made many positive things happen in my life. One such friend gave one of his kidneys(sp) for his sister within the last sixty days. How powerful is that? I'm doing many irrational things right now, apparently. I know it, but don't spread the word.,,i.e chin up and hang with me. Please read last message. Thursday can be a big day for us. Tony
Friday, July 15, 2005 9:25 PM CDT Cindy and I met with very talented people at Vanderbilt today concerning our options for Michael. As you all know and have been listening to me inform you on this website, Michael’s cancer has some unique characteristics. It has not responded to chemotherapy as most expected. It is unclear whether the treatments are having an impact on the tumor. What was first considered a solid mass, does not appear to be just a solid mass. Surgery is now an option, although very dangerous, and is one we are leaning to next week. We are still waiting to hear from other opinions from other folks, but it appears that this is our best option at this point. After an hour plus conversation with the MDs at Vanderbilt, they feel strongly it is what might work for Michael. These were tough conversations because they have prepared us that our next 12 months will be tougher than the last 90-120 days even if this seems to be working because there will be many radiation/chemo treatments to follow. I cannot imagine it being any more difficult, but can you imagine the story when we have Michael back? This is a very brief summary of what we discussed today. It is VERY complex. AND I’m not going to try and explain to anyone the details behind it. So, don’t ask. However, I feel strongly that the folks we talked to today would not attempt this and put Michael through this unless there was an opportunity for success. Tony
Thursday, July 14, 2005 7:59 PM CDT Yep, Dad went to work today and missed Danica Patrick's visit with Michael....For those that do not know, she is big into car racing, and Mom said she was cute too.
We meet with MDs tomorrow at 4:00PM to clarify next step for Michael.
Michael got a nice card today that someone quoted a verse and I'd like to repeat it. "I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13
Chin Up! Tony
Wednesday, July 13, 2005 7:54 PM CDT A couple of nights ago, Michael and Mom heard some very nice music coming from the hallway in the hospital. Michael perked up and insisted on finding the source. Mom and the nurse led Michael down the hall until they came to a room where a wonderful family was singing wonderful hymns to their child/relative that was in the hospital. They invited Michael in and he listened to them sing. The other child went home one or two nights ago and I do not know his total prognosis and would want to keep it confidential if I did, other than I know he WANTED to go home and got his way, but this family came all the way back to Vanderbilt to see Michael today, and I was there tonight when they came by. Although Michael is not feeling well, it brought some smiles today(for me too). They brought gifts for him (totally unnecessary). Also, fortunately we had William and Caroline down for a quick visit with Michael at the same time and they were able to listen to the wonderful singing from this family. I guess my point is…how unselfish was this family today? Tony
Tuesday, July 12, 2005 6:57 PM CDT Not much change today. They did decide to place a cathedar(sp) in to help Michael tee tee last night about 4:00AM. Mom was here then. I am here tonight. Tony
Monday, July 11, 2005 7:25 PM CDT Well, I suspect this is going to be an important week for all of us. I will keep you posted when there is something to report.
Our hope/prayer today should be that Michael’s fever goes away and his counts go up so he feels better and can get out of the room to swing, or whatever. The man in the picture on this website that helped Michael with the BIG vacuum came by to see Michael today. How cool!!
Tony
Sunday, July 10, 2005 6:46 PM CDT Oh well, I encourage the folks that/who/whom have not read the journal from Friday to go back and read it.
We’ve made our 6th visit to the hospital since late April (if I am wrong on the number, I challenge you to correct me..ha ha). Michael had a fever, and blood counts were very low. So, other than the fact he is VERY vulnerable to infection and stuck in his room, everything is OK.
Michael amazes me how he is handling this situation in his life. He is so strong! He still has a since of humor, and plays and jokes with the nurses(outstanding by the way). In one way he wants attention, and in another way he does not….Sound familiar?
As we head into a new week, we will manage the situation with him and the other children. I’ve posted the verse below before, but felt like doing it again.
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Friday, July 8, 2005 7:33 PM CDT Saturday We are in the hospital tonight. Michael has a fever
Friday notes below
It was a long day for Michael. We went to get his CT about 8:00AM. That was complete about 11:30AM, and Michael awakend/woke up/ OK so I went to work. Mom had to stay with him until about 6:00PM because they gave him a blood transfusion, and a chemo treatment today.
I will try and be as broad/general as I can with the results of the CT. As we all have mentioned, it is not shrinking yet. It is still a little too soon from the new chemo to tell whether or not it is working. However, as contingent plans, we are looking at many options and getting opinions from other locations from other MDs. This will take us through next week(as to what we will do),,and This is not to say we do not have confidence in what Vanderbilt is doing. We will be talking to folks in Texas and in New York THROUGH Vanderbilt. i.e. - we are not abandoning Vanderbilt.
Issues that I consider small but can be a logistical nightmare are the potential transportation issues if we have to move and have to move quick. Commercial flight is not an option. We have many ideas in mind as to how to handle that if we need it and some have already offered suggestions, but any input we will still take.
If any of you hate shots, let me tell you it is more difficult to give one to your child each night!!
We are home for the weekend as of tonight, and unless I have something I need to share with you, I am signing off until Monday.
Tony
Thursday, July 7, 2005 7:06 PM CDT Michael had a good day. He was cheerful. Many smiles. I will let you know as soon as we know something about the scan tomorrow. I would not expect to hear anything conclusive however until Monday. Tony
Wednesday, July 6, 2005 7:54 PM CDT Michael will be going to get a different type of cat scan on Friday. The tumor is not shrinking, and they need to re-evaluate what is next. They will have to put him to sleep, which can be very dangerous because of his current lung capacity.
Michael's mood is strong, however. And I retain my "half glass full" optimistic opinion, although with some very cautious realism.
My job is difficult to focus on right now, but it does provide some distraction.
We appreciate all comments on the website, and also the ones who choose to write the e-mails directly to me. Tony
Tuesday, July 5, 2005 7:57 PM CDT The highlight of Michael's day today was that our housekeeper came and VACUMMED. He waited on her visit all night last night!! We all watched home movies last night that showed fun times at Christmas, Easter, etc. They all loved watching themselves on the TV, and so did mom and dad. It beat all the firework shows last night. Chin Up... Tony
Sunday, July 3, 2005 8:17 PM CDT Michael is home tonight. I hope you all have a great day tomorrow on the 4th. As mentioned before, we have a friend headed to Bahgdad this week for a year. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Tony
Saturday, July 2, 2005 7:41 PM CDT Michael had a good night last night with Dad. He slept on the sofa, and insisted Dad take the bed. Dad is with Michael again tonight. The nurse's name tonight is Luke! :( Tony
Friday, July 1, 2005 7:01 PM CDT We finally got a room about 6:00pm. Mom had been down at the clinic with Michael since 9:00AM. She left once we got him checked in the room.
This is our 5th hospital stay(multiple nights each stay) since late April. That's the bad news. The good news is...we were looking for a great view of downtown Nashville for the July 4th fireworks show....and we have found one. Room 6418.
I can't remember whether I shared this story with you or not. However, there is an attendent in the parking deck here that works each day. The very 1st time Michael entered Vanderbilt, and we were devastated with everything going on...I was leaving the parking deck. She said.."How are you today?...I said .."I've been better"...She replied....."YOU ON THIS SIDE OF THE DIRT AIN'T YOU? So, I remember this each day, and I am amazed at this women's smile each day I leave here. We will keep you posted through the weekend. On a side note...if anyone can convince Vanderbilt Hospital to add FOX NEWS or CNBC to their cable network, it would make time pass more easily.
TONY
Thursday, June 30, 2005 7:51 PM CDT Hospital tomorrow. I will try and keep you posted. Thanks for all the support. Have a safe long weekend. Tony
Wednesday, June 29, 2005 8:12 PM CDT Michael was calm today. I know many of you struggle to read these updates. I continue to try and write them. We are getting little sleep. I'm not a person of many words(Daaa)...as many of you know. So, I will MAKE myself continue to update you for MICHAEL. I sat with him a little bit earlier tonight, and instead of me rubbing his arm to calm him, he rubbed MY arm...:(
I am actually anxious to get him back in the hospital on Friday.
The good news today was....my suit fit and I was able to go to work(in other words, I'm gaining weight), and Cindy had a couple of visitors at home tonight for some temporary relief. Tony.
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 7:42 PM CDT Michael rested quite a bit today. He also ate some shrimp(8 small ones tonight). Somehow, he still manages to get a smile out every now and then. As mentioned previously, we go back into the hospital on Friday for more treatment..
Mom and Dad took the other two children swimming for a few minutes tonight. They had a great time. We basically had the pool to ourselves. I guess everyone left about the time I took my shirt off. :) Tony
Monday, June 27, 2005 7:11 PM CDT Not much change today for Michael. He did eat some spagetti(a little) today. Mom had all three children all day today. So, Mom is tired. We did get some extra medicine that may help Michael sleep tonight. Keep thinking positive thoughts, and praying each day, and spread the word. Tony
Sunday, June 26, 2005 7:50 PM CDT An uncomfortable and tiring day for Michael, BUT he was at home. He goes back in the hospital on Friday for more treatment. Hopefully for only 3 days. So, we will take only 6 days.. As mentioned, I got older this weekend. I also got more emotional with age, or I hope it was just being tired. Sorry for using this website for a personal diary!!! I know many of you look for good news about Michael each day. I look forward to the day I can share the miracle of good news. Caroline and William were paying so much attention to Michael this weekend. I think they understand better than I do. Mom was giving Michael his medicine tonight in bed, and Caroline was bragging about her twin brother Michael, and how much she loved him. They both kissed him all day. Tony
Saturday, June 25, 2005 9:06 PM CDT Sorry for the short delay in updates. Dad took a break to celebrate his 40th birthday. Although I had a fun two days with two friends I've known for 22 plus years, there were not many moments where my mind did not drift back to Michael's situation. Michael is home. Although he is not feeling well, he will be home on Dad's birthday on Sunday. Tony
Wednesday, June 22, 2005 8:22 PM CDT Michael had a good day. As most of you know, he loves vacumm cleaners, or anything that resembles it or sounds like it. Well, someone was cleaning a room WAY down the hall today and Michael heard it. You bet he came out of the room and found them, and he helped clean the room. We have great pictures of that and we will share soon. Michael's little brother William came to see him today and pushed Michael around in the wheelchair. They both had a great time. The results came back from the cat scan. As mentioned earlier, the scan was to try and determine why he has a fever, and to isolate it. The good news is there was nothing obvious. The bad news is there was nothing obvious. I just met with the infectious(sp) desease doctor, and he felt that since Michael's blood counts were steadily rising, and there was nothing they could easily see, it would be best to see if Michael can fight it versus giving him random antibiotics. WE MAY need them later, and we should save them versus building some type of immune to them. However, he will still see a uroligist(spelling AGAIN) in the morning. There is still some concern that the tumor may be impacting kidney function. OK, you heard the non MD version. Hope it was accurate. Tony
Tuesday, June 21, 2005 7:30 PM CDT The doctors are trying to figure out why Michael has a fever. So, he gets a full body cat scan in the morning(Wednesday). As many of you know, he is one tough guy and it pains me to imagine what he is going through each day from his perspective. I know he remains positive, and so will we. Tony
Tuesday, June 21, 2005 7:47 AM CDT Michael walked around some yesterday, and even ate some food last night. Unfortunately, we have to "swab" his mouth each night, and when mom did this.....ooopppps. We hope he improves more today. He is running a fever, and we need to focus on this to get him home......We are going on 12 day stay here...ouch... Tony
Sunday, June 19, 2005 6:40 PM CDT Michael walked all the way outside and back this afternoon. We swang/swung for about 45 minutes. He is going to the "tee tee" by himself, and this makes him much more comfortable. He had a pretty good day. I went to lunch with Mmom, Caroline, and William. We then all had a big nap. I am with him tonight. Check out the new pictures. Tony
Saturday, June 18, 2005 8:45 PM CDT Michael was tired today. He did not sleep last night at all. His eyes were wide open. He did not appear in pain. He was just AWAKE. So, my luck ran out on the GOOD nights. He is receiving a blood transfusion tonight. This always helps him. He was smiling with mom when I left tonight. I just heard he is sitting up in his chair(9:00PM) Cindy came to the hospital today about noon and was going to lunch with some friends from Alabama. Wow, she looked great! Has anyone noticed, but me? I guess I should have told her then. Tony
Friday, June 17, 2005 7:38 PM CDT Day by Day. So, As compared to yesterday, Michael looks great. A few visitors, a few new Barney movies and other things from some old friends, a few Veggie tail tickets for brother and sister, a few welcomed e-mails, A few friends from Florence, Alabama visiting tomorrow, and much more generosity today that touches our family......we are so thankful. So pray for daddy and a quiet night. Oh, and a good night for mommy at home. Tony
Thursday, June 16, 2005 5:55 PM CDT Michael was much improved today as compared to the last 72 hours. He has eaten 4 french fries so far tonight. Not much, but first sign of an appetite since Saturday. He also managed a couple of smiles. I think we got one on camera. If so, I will get it to the website soon. The folks at the hospital just brought in some toys for him to choose from. You might guess he chose Barney. Between Barney and the new vacumm mom got him today, he is set. They also left some toys for his brother and sister to play with tomorrow if they get to come and see him. I am here tonight. Tony
Wednesday, June 15, 2005 9:32 PM CDT There are still lots of problems today, but I can say Michael is better tonight at this time than he was last night. Mom had a rough night with him last night, and will be with him tonight.
I can tell William and Caroline had a great time at summer school today. They went to sleep in moments....
I'll take this time to say hello and "I Love You" to Cindy. I can't wait to spend time with you.
Tony
Tuesday, June 14, 2005 7:37 PM CDT William and Caroline start summer school tomorrow. Cindy will be staying with Michael tonight. We have some issues, but he is sleeping right now. Chin up! Tony
Monday, June 13, 2005 7:32 PM CDT Michael Stanley, Jr has convinced me that watching Barney is more fun than watching Michael Jackson today.
Michael had a rough day. He has been in some pain, but they started him on a drip of morphine so he doesn't care right now and is sleeping peacefully. Mom had rough night with him last night, and I have duty tonight.
He has one more round of the heavy chemo tomorrow. He will most likely not go home Wednesday unless he has a serious rebound. I would not put it past him to rebound...
Cindy and I had lunch with a friend(and his beautiful wife) today that is headed to Baghdad, Iraq for a year. He has 2 children. We had a wonderful short relief from what is going on here. I admire him for what he and others are doing for all of us.
Tony
Sunday, June 12, 2005 6:42 PM CDT Once we got some "bladder spasms" taken care of today, Michael seemed to have a pretty good day. Grandmama stayed with him while the rest of us took Aunt Barbara to the airport and had lunch with her.
Cindy is with Michael tonight. When I left, he was eating cheese pizza and sitting up by himself in a chair. This is good. They are feeding him through a tube small amounts at night. However, it's good to see him eat.
Tony
Saturday, June 11, 2005 7:29 PM CDT Aunt Barbara has been great on her visit. She took William and Caroline to the Cumberland Science Museum today. I could tell they loved it, and I wish I could have been there.
Michael has been resting most of the day. Grandmommy came from Florence, Alabama today. He was excited to see her.
Michael handled round 1 of a 5 day treatment very well last night. He even ate a little today on his own.
Vanderbilt Children's Hospital is amazing. Especially the 6th floor staff.
Friday, June 10, 2005 7:54 PM CDT They placed a feeding tube down Michael's nose today for extra nutrition, and also placed the cathedar(sp) back in. Ironically, he is most peaceful tonight so far. As most know from past journals on the website this week, we are hitting some bumps in the road. I’m pretty numb, and also forgetting what I have already shared with you. I need to review my past comments also.
Cindy was with him earlier today, and they saw a doctor from "the team" that seemed to have his glass half empty. This upset mom today. I refuse to become a pessimist. Now,,,, I am also a realist and there are reasons for all things, but I also believe in miracles and prayer.
Thanks for listening. Tony
Thursday, June 9, 2005 7:09 PM CDT After the scan, the doctors have determined that the chemo is doing some damage to the tumor, but it has not lessoned in size. It needs to shrink to operate. The good news is that there are additional chemo treatments that are stronger, and they will begin these with Michael tomorrow. Of course the bad news is that they ARE stronger and can have more severe side effects. Michael will go into the hospital tomorrow and be there for 5 nights. So, let's pray a lot this week, OK??!!! It's tough at home, but much more difficult shuffling our time when he is in the hospital.
Aunt Barbara just arrived tonight and will be with us until Sunday. We all went to the airport to pick her up, and all enjoyed the ride.
Tony
Wednesday, June 8, 2005 7:28 PM CDT Sorry for the short delay... All the doctors meet tomorrow(Thursday). We will know more then. Michael is again experiencing a lot of pain when trying to "tee tee", or whatever the appropriate term might be in your area. We are anxious to see what they do going forward, and we will share it with you as soon as we know.
Monday, June 6, 2005 8:09 PM CDT As you know, Michael had his CAT scan today. We do not know “final” results, and probably will not know treatment going forward until Thursday. We did have a meeting with the doctor today before the scan, and he called after the scan, and he more clearly explained some of the options going forward. None have been decided upon.
Michael is malnourished, and they will probably have to place some extra nourishment in him by medical methods.
On a positive note, he is sleeping much better the last few nights, and this has given him strength during the day. Tony
Sunday, June 5, 2005 9:13 PM CDT Considering....it was a great weekend. Caroline and William got to go to a movie at the theater with a friend of ours. Michael goes to have a cat scan Monday afternoon. Before that...Cindy and I have a one on one with his doctor. We will not know anything from the cat scan Monday, but will let everyone know as soon as we do know. There have been over 4,200 hits on this website for Michael in 7 weeks. If you subtract me, that's still a lot. We appreciate all the support!!! Tony
Saturday, June 4, 2005 9:56 PM CDT Michael had a great night last night, and so did Mom and Dad. Many things happened today as it would in any household with 3 children that are 4 and under. IT WAS GREAT. We were all at home. My problem right now is giving in to any request by Michael. I know it is not right, but so what to all those expert parents and specialists if he wants to watch "Rudolf the Red Nose Raindeer" in June. Let's talk about what is right for Michael in his situation, not what is right for all. Aunt Barbara is coming next weekend to help us with next treatment. We can't wait. However, I think I will wait until we are a little closer to her arrival before I spill the beans to the children this time..
Tony
Friday, June 3, 2005 7:36 PM CDT Michael had a pretty rough day. He would not eat or drink at first, and we were afraid we were headed back to see our 4th room at Vanderbilt Hospital. However, he began to eat and drink about 6:00PM, so we hope this will continue tonight and through the weekend. I did, however, use a little bribery....…no drink juice,,,no see Barney. Forgive me, but it worked.
We read all cards everyone sends us, and they are all special. One particularly touched me tonight and had a verse on it that I would like to share:
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Tony
Thursday, June 2, 2005 7:40 PM CDT Michael had a good day today. We saw "the smile" several times. I think it is the first time he has actually been able to get a bath without something wrapped up, or hanging out of the tub, or something out of the ordinary. It was relaxing for him. His sister, Caroline, sang several songs(they both learned at school) to him while he was in the tub. He loved it!! We hope for a fun weekend together. Monday is a big day. They will do a second cat scan to see if the chemo is working to shrink the tumor. Let's all pray for good news. Tony
Wednesday, June 1, 2005 5:59 PM CDT Michael is home tonight. He is tired, and he goes back for a treatment in the morning. However, it is not expected that he will have to stay overnight.
Tuesday, May 31, 2005 6:04 PM CDT Michael had a blood transfusion today. They took the catheter(?) out also. So, if he feels better tomorrow, and will drink fluids, he should be able to go home. I am with him tonight. Tony
Monday, May 30, 2005 6:56 PM CDT Well,,,we made it to Monday. However, Michael is back in the hospital tonight. He just wasn't himself the last 24-48 hours. They came and took blood this morning, and they placed him back in the hospital this afternoon. Although he was drinking some at home, he was dehydrated, and his eating was limited. So, I'm sure fluids in the hospital will help. Cindy is staying with him tonight. Tony
Sunday, May 29, 2005 8:06 AM CDT Michael has had a good weekend so far. He is very tired, but in good spirits. He is eating and drinking well. He even got to swing some yesterday. Tony
Friday, May 27, 2005 7:24 PM CDT Michael had a treatment today. It went well. He is tired, but hanging in there. In comparison, he had a great night last night, and if he had not, mom and dad would have (*)*^%$))&^(short for skipped town). Thanks to all for the prayers and thoughts. We look forward to a great Memorial Day, and we appreciate all who are defending "freedom". Tony
Thursday, May 26, 2005 7:23 PM CDT The good news today is: 1. Cindy’s mom came home from the hospital. 2. Michael had his catheter (sp) re-inserted. He is more comfortable and was able to come home with it, when we thought we might be in the hospital tonight, performing bladder surgery, and being their all weekend. SO, this tells you how miserable he must have been, because I hear they are not fun. 3. Dad’s office door key worked this morning! Tony
Wednesday, May 25, 2005 8:23 PM CDT New pictures for those that missed yesterday.
Michael had an OK day. Mom had an OK day. Dad had to give Michael a "shot" tonight. You've probably heard this before, but "it really does hurt me more than it does him". If anyone knows of something stronger than a "muti-vitamin" and prayer for energy, let me know.
Cindy's Mom had some good reports today. Looks like some medications will take care of the irregularities in heart beat. She is still in the hospital, however.
:)Tony
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 3:30 PM CDT MORE PICTURES on the website. We got Michael home again about 30 minutes ago. He was happy to be home. He is doing well with his brother and sister. The news of the day is that Cindy's Mom was placed in the hospital in Florence, Alabama earlier this morning with a very rapid heart rate. We still do not know anything. They are running test. Cindy is hanging in there. Tony
Monday, May 23, 2005 8:18 PM CDT Generally, Doctors are very good at “under promising and over delivering”. However, occasionally they forget this concept. Twice in the last 24 hours, they said Michael might come home if ……, and this,…… Well, this has not made Mom, a happy Mom…And as a result, not a very happy Dad, and unfortunately this comes out around other people. The folks at the hospital are great. They want to take care of Michael.
Nana and Papa and Aunt Sharon were very helpful this weekend and we were fortunate they were here.
I believe most of you realize from reading this website that I am a guy with “the glass half full, not half empty”. So, it is difficult for me to write the “bad” days. I’d rather keep them.., but will continue to try and keep you updated because I know so many care for Michael. Tony
Sunday, May 22, 2005 12:11 AM CDT Michael went into the hospital Friday, and is still there. We just found out that he will not get to go home today (Sunday) either. He is running some fever, and they want to keep him at the hospital. He was not happy with that news since he is stuck in his room again, and neither were his Mom and Dad. However, at least we know he is in good hands. He had a bad Friday night and Saturday. We do not know when he will be home, but we will keep you posted. The chemo went well, but he is not eating right now…Tony
Friday, May 20, 2005 11:11 PM CDT Nana and Papa and Aunt Sharon made it tonight to see Michael. CHAMP(Megan) did a great job today!!! Dad is with William and Caroline tonight.Mom is with Michael at the hospital. A few problems tonight, but we have the Gloves on!!!! THANKS for keeping in touch... I will keep in touch over the weekend.....Tony
Thursday, May 19, 2005 8:06 PM CDT Michael will be in the hospital tomorrow night for sure for a treatment, after a long day...Stay posted and I will update Friday night...Tony
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 7:04 PM CDT A MESSAGE FROM MOM Dear friends and family. I am sorry I have not personally thanked ALL of you for your well wishes and thoughtful prayers during this very difficult time. As most of you know, E-mail is not my thing (cell phones are more my style). The news we received three weeks ago humbled us. The graciousness of our friends and family has humbled us equally. How do you leave the Pediatricians office, drive to Vanderbilt Hospital, Valet Park your car, check into the ER for an Xray (thinking you will be leaving soon)…one week later you leave for one hour to be with the twin sister Caroline and brother William knowing your precious son has been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, when will he come home? Words cannot describe…. I am so glad Tony, my sweet husband and loving father has the strength to update this website each day. All of you are so dear to look at this website and we will keep you informed. Twelve months of Chemotherapy and Radiation are a long time. We will need your love and support to get through this time. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and we look forward to sharing the news that sweet Michael is in remission, and he will be. Then it will be a new beginning for our family, and a time for us to start thinking of how we can help other children and their families like us. We ask that you pray for our Angel daily..., much love, Cindy AND FROM DAD!! Michael got a little bit tired of being home today(and so did mom), but tonight, we played on our neighbor's swing set...Boy, we loved it...The neighbors were not home, but they know we love it, and yes, they read this website....They have two great daughters that are special friends to our children...We are counting days until Friday. A big day for Michael....Also, I'm sure one day Michael will REALLY appreciate that his pediatrician (and others in her practice) cares so much about him that she noticed him playing in the back yard this weekend….Tony
Monday, May 16, 2005 8:54 PM CDT I wish everyone could hear William and Caroline say their prayers each night. Wow!!!! Tonight, Caroline asked if Michael was sick. When I tried to explain, she said "we will take care of him tonight"......Michael had a powerful smile today. He rode with his mom to pick up William and Caroline from school today. He got to see his teachers when they came to say hello from outside the car. It made his day!! Thanks to all for the many meals. However, Michael got his eating habbits from his dad. I'm feeling a little grip around the belt. Tony
Sunday, May 15, 2005 9:18 PM CDT Michael had a good weekend. The family spent time at home together; and though this is not an unusual event, I cannot say I have ever APPRECIATED it more. Big week coming up for Michael..On Friday, they will be placing a device in his chest to allow them to more easily give him his chemo treatments, he will have a BIG chemo treatment on that same day, AND his Nana and Papa and Aunt Sharon are coming to see him this weekend. I need to teach all of the children the concept of "time", because now that I have mentioned they are coming, the children expect them to arrive any moment now..Tony
Friday, May 13, 2005 8:29 PM CDT Everyone have a great weekend, pray, and check back with Michael on Monday. I am going to spend a lot of time with him and the family. We will enjoy every moment. Be back in touch Monday. Tony
Thursday, May 12, 2005 7:13 PM CDT Michael had chemo treatment today and did well. His blood counts are very good. It's early, but this is a good thing.....and yes,,,he is still eating very well...I'm not sure what can stop that....Keep praying and spread the word.....THANKS!!!
Wednesday, May 11, 2005 8:39 PM CDT Michael had a good day. We took him for a ride to see the deer around the neighborhood this evening. All 3 children love it....Daddy did not like seeing William and Caroline get dressed for school today, without Michael. Michael gets his 3rd round of chemo in the morning(Thursday)... Tony
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 6:58 PM CDT Michael came home Monday night. Although he had few cries during the night(and special attention he did receive), I can't explain how comfortable it felt last night to have the entire family at home. He had a great day today at home, according to Mom and Grandmama. Smiles, Smiles, Smiles...OK, well he is still watching Barney and Shrek, but it is at HOME...New pictures soon. Tony
Monday, May 9, 2005 6:09 PM CDT MICHAEL IS HOME!!!!!! WE WILL KEEP YOU POSTED THROUGH THIS WEBSITE!!!!
Sunday, May 8, 2005 7:28 PM CDT New Pictures...for those that have not seen Michael must have felt many people were thinking about him today. Lots of smiles,,,although through a tired face. Mom and Dad got to spend some time together today for Mother's Day thanks to some new friends(tired friends) that took William and Caroline to the zoo...Although most of that time for Cindy and me was catching up on sleep...Michael settled for the Barney zoo movie, but must have loved it,,,,MORE THAN ONCE...We are looking for some good news Monday concerning length of stay. We will keep you posted. Tony
Saturday, May 7, 2005 11:05 AM CDT CHECK OUT MY NEW PICTURES!!! Michael had a good Saturday. Grandma went to take him on the patio, and at first the door was locked. Needless to say, Mr. Michael was not happy...However, later in the afternoon the door was opened and I was able to take him outside. It was a little difficult getting him back in the room he was enjoying it so much. I hope Sunday goes as well. He is still eating very well.....HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL MOMS!
Friday, May 6, 2005 7:59 PM CDT I wanted to hurry and write this message tonight...Mr. Michael looks better than I have seen him in many days. What a funny little guy. Got to go and enjoy the moment. We are playing. PS. Daddy bought the nurses Krispy Kreme Donuts tonight.... :) Dad
Thursday, May 5, 2005 6:30 PM CDT Wow! This really is starting to feel like the movie "Ground Hog Day". For those that understand, great(especially AGE Training), for those that do not understand...hum... Michael had a good night last night while I was here. I guess tipping the nurse helped. Sorry Mom... Michael had chemo today. He handled it well. He actually rested a good bit,,,He still is weak and we are placing his interest first...So, we appreciate visitors, but be sure just to ask the nurse outside first...and they will contact mom... PS. Mom and I took him outside right before I left tonight...or should I say he walked the whole way there and back...Dad...
Wednesday, May 4, 2005 6:45 PM CDT Michael got a blood transfusion today to make him feel better. Although he is a little weak, he continues to eat great. He just ate all his spegettios(spelling? As many cans as I've had in my life, you would think I could spell it). I can barely see him from the couch as I write this note because of the many balloons in the room, and other things many OLD and NEW friends have sent. He gets another chemo treatment at 8:00 in the morning. Mom finally went home and I will be staying with him tonight. Maybe I can turn Barney and Shrek off if he closes his eyes....As I say that,,,,,HE SLEEPS.... Thanks!!!! Daddy Tony
Tuesday, May 3, 2005 8:33 PM CDT Michael got to go outside on the patio today. He also walked around some. Considering where he is, he had a good day. He wants you to continue to "spread the word" concerning thoughts and prayers. You all have been so helpful, I'd like to start thanking everyone individually, but I'm afraid they would start playing the music like some hollywood awards show....We believe in the power of prayer.. and that all have a purpose..... PS. I'd like to wish my Dad(the best) a Happy Birthday today!!!!!Michael says Happy Birthday PaPa. Tony
Monday, May 2, 2005 5:44 PM CDT Daddy went to work today. That was a tough one for Daddy. However, enough about him. Mom is doing OK. I had a pretty good day. Fever spiked at one point, but medicine brought it back down. I am off Barney for now and on to Shrek!! So, from purple to green we go. I really appreciate all the support notes in the guestbook!! Mom and Dad do also. It really helps us all....Michael PS...GOOD NEWS TONIGHT. I AM NOT IN ISOLATION ANYMORE AND CAN GO OUT OF MY ROOM TO PLAY TOMORROW. THERE IS ALSO A PATIO HERE ON THE 6TH FLOOR. I HOPE THE WEATHER IS NICE. I LOVE OUTDOORS.
Sunday, May 1, 2005 3:53 PM CDT Michael was a little tired and uncomfortable today, which can be expected. We had to work extra hard today to get that smile out of him. I think he is ready for the catheter(spelling?) to be removed. Along with everything else, it appears to be causing bladder spasms. The good news is that his appetite is strong. He is eating well today, especially Aunt Ella’s cookies…I promise…He is eating them, not me… Tony
Saturday, April 30, 2005 12:05 AM CDT Michael is doing well today. His Bone Scan came back Negative yesterday, and that was great news. One less thing he has to fight. He is handling the treatments very well. No tummy aches yet. He played "hide and seek" with the nurses this morning, and they got to see him smile. They took some test today, and if they come back OK, he will no longer be in isolation and will be able to go out of his room and go to playrooms, patios, etc. He will love to get out of the room. I'm seeing purple I've seen so much Barney. Once I teach Cindy how to update this website, I'm sure you will be provided with a more meaningful update each day. I've added some pictures to the sight. Please ignore all spelling.... Tony
Friday, April 29, 2005 2:45 PM CDT This page has just been created. Michael has been diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. This is a mass form of cancer. It is currently too large for removal. He has begun Chemotherapy. Everyone who knows his smile is aware of how powerful it can be to others. They also know the many struggles in life Michael has faced and defeated in his first four years. He is a fighter, and needs your prayers. Cindy and I will attempt to keep everyone posted on this website of his activity and progress. This is not intended to replace personal conversations and contact. It only meant as a supplement. Cindy and I are blown away with the support we have received already. We appreciate it and are touched.. Tony
