Hello to all of our dear family and friends. Here is the notice appearing in the Twin Cities newspapers. On behalf of our family I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love, kindness, and support for our family. Scot was blessed all around and it is a pleasure and privilege to be part of his community. Love to all, Judy, Dale and Jim
VAILLANCOURT , SCOT EVAN 46 years, 2/8/58 – 10/26/04, Due to complications as a result of a traumatic brain injury following a bicycle accident in Gallup, New Mexico, on 10/26/03. Scot died in the presence of family and friends. Scot was an avid bicyclist and held a Master's Degree in Special Education. He was employed by JFK Middle School in Gallup, NM at the time of his accident. Originally from Richfield, MN, but had spent the last many years in the Southwest, with his home base in Durango, CO. Preceded in death by father and mother, Marshall and Kathryn (Peggy) Vaillancourt. He is survived by brothers Jim Luse (Mary Jane), Dale Vaillancourt (Nancy), sister Judy Vaillancourt-Yerhot (Don), nephews Kyle Yerhot and Joel Vaillancourt, and many close friends. Celebration of Scot's life on Saturday, November 13, 2004, Noon, at the St. James Lutheran Church, 3650 Willams Drive, Burnsville, MN. No flowers please.
DIRECTIONS TO THE CHURCH:
35w to Hwy 13, go south(actually west). Proceed to first stoplight at Co Rd 5, go south (left). There will be a Superamerica on the corner. Go west (right) at the first intersection,on Williams Drive. Proceed 3/4 mile to St James Lutheran Church, which will be on the right. 3650 Willams Drive.
The service/lunch/ride:
Celebration of Scot's life will be at noon at St James Lutheran Church, 3650 Williams Drive, Burnsville. Lunch to follow service.
After lunch, we will proceed across Williams Drive to Court Place, which is the street Dale lives on. With a car or two at the front leading the way, bikes in the middle, and the remaining cars in the back, we will ride/drive to Murphy/Hanrehan Park.
The park is 3 to 4 miles, a flat ride. There are a few major intersections along the way, so we may have to stop and wait for people to catch up due to stoplights.
Murphy Hanrehan Park is actually closed for an archery deer hunt that day, so we cannot use the main entrance to the park. Instead, we will assemble at Cam Ram Park, which borders Murphy Park. There is a parking lot, ballfield, and playground there. We will follow the paved trail on foot a short distance to where it borders Murphy Park. There it intersects with an un-paved trail which goes into Murphy and links up with the main bike trails. This is where we will scatter Scot's ashes.
Incidentally, Scot and I rode into Murphy on this trail. It is marked "no mountain bikes", because they like you to go in the main entrance instead. Scot got a kick out of going past these signs into the park.
Hope this all works, love,
Dale
INFORMATION RE:DONATIONS
Dave Devlin, a good friend of Scot's from Luther College has spoken with Tom Murray from the development office. A scholarship fund has been set up in Scot's name to assist students entering the Special Education field. Donations may be sent to:
The Scot Vaillancourt Memorial Scholarship In Education.
All memorial gifts in his honor will be designated to this specific scholarship fund. After consultation with the faculty in the Education Department, a scholarship in his name will be awarded, as you requested, to an education major with an interest in teaching special education students. This scholarship award will most likely be awarded in the fall of 2005.
All gifts should be sent to Luther College, Development Office c/o Betty Soukup, 700 College Dr. Decorah, IA 52101
Checks should be made out to Luther College with Scot Vaillancourt Scholarship noted on the memo line
We will notify you when a student has been selected to receive this scholarship.
In addition to a scholarship in honor of Scot, you may also want to consider having a tree planted on the campus in his memory. We have a long-standing campus landscape plan that identifies specific trees for designated areas of the campus. A memorial tree is funded at $200.00 and may be planted in April or October. Family and friends often choose to gather for a memorial tree service soon after the planting. The tree is then tagged with Scot's name and his name is added to a reference portfolio in the alumni relations office here in Loyalty Hall (formerly the "Art Barn").
If you choose to make donations elsewhere in Scot's name here are some suggestions: The Brain Injury Association of New Mexico The Brain Injury Association of Minnesota, Mpls., MN The National Brain Injury Association, Washington D.C. Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, St. Paul, MN
