Nolan Daniel Anderson

Round 3...After breaking his femur Feb. of 1999 Nolan laid in traction at Altru in GF for three weeks. He eventually healed only to refracture his femur in June of 2004. This time he walked on the fracture for 7 weeks before it finally broke completely - in the same place as he did in 2nd grade. We found out that Nolan had a tumor in his upper femur and that xrays showed it was visable back in 1999. Fortunately the tumor was benign. He had a rod inserted in August of 2004 and the road of recovery was long and tedious. Nolan worked so hard to get back into shape that he ended up with a stress fracture in his foot last summer. Nolan had just completed his first year of high school hockey and had a successful year. He was in Moorhead trying out for the Section 8 Advanced 16 team - which we hear he made by the way - when he suffered yet another fracture to his right leg. This time he broke his bone below the rod and also fractured the femural neck. We will keep everyone up to date during Nolan's recovery and rehabilitation.

As if four fractures weren't enough, Nolan added insult to injury on the third day of the 2007 school year running the 40 yard dash.
X-rays reveal a minute fracture located just below the four bolts that go into his femural neck. This injury lead Dr. Schall to order a skeletal series which resulted in a head and neck CT scan and a cervical neck x-ray. We are awaiting results of what those show.

We do know that Nolan has poly fibrous dysplasia and has tumors in his cheek bones, his sinuses, his skull, his ribs, his femur, his femural neck and possibly in his cerebral neck. We are currenlty awaiting referral appointments at Mayo and at the "U".

Nolan's love for the sport of hockey is unlike any I have seen in any other kid. He has been passionate about it - playing, watching on TV, consuming stats from ESPN and the internet - for as long as I can remember. Dr. Schall delivered the news he was so afraid of hearing, no hockey this year.

Twenty-two years ago today, I gave birth to my first born - Gavin Nicholas Anderson. Happy Birthday "G"!!!

Now on to Mr. Nolan - Coach of the Year!!!! The team he helps coach advances to the next level of play-offs, the Regional tournament in Sartell February 29 - March 2nd. If they do well there, they advance to the state tournament AND the kids get to shave Nolan's head. That's a scary thought with prom on the horizon and senior pictures not too far off. Oh well, it's only hair - right?

The high of yesterday gave way to the low of today as Nolan is back in the grips of a sinus infection:( We made it through January, though! Good documentation for when we go to Mayo in two weeks.

Thank you to those of you who still take time to check in on Nolan! Your support has helped carry us through!!!

Pam:)

What a wonderful week in the Anderson household!! I can't express into words the awesome feeling of having Gavin back. He looks so good - I have always credited the Engelstad genes for that:) I could sure get use to the not working scene!!! It will be good to get back to my kids at school next week and be working when Gavin heads back down the road. He will leave Monday or Tuesday and visit with family and friends before having to be back in Texas on the 25th. He has a cute little sports car that isn't Minnesota winter friendly, so departure will depend on weather and road conditions - is this where I pray for a week long blizzard so I can keep him home?

We are three and a half weeks away from Mayo. We have all of our appointments co-ordinated and hopefully it will only be a two day stay - not that we don't want to spend more time with our great Rochester family!!!

Of course, Nolan is looking forward more to the Minnesota Wild vs Chicago Blackhawks hockey game than Mayo - but what 17 year old sports enthusist wouldn't?

I have been terrible about getting pictures this week with Gavin home, but tonight we are having some friends over, so I will try and get some pics of 'My Three Sons' to put in the photo album.

The picture above is a snapshot of a collage that I made for Nolan for Christmas from his youth hockey days - long before fracture #5 and no more hockey.

Thank you for thinking of Nolan and for stopping by!! We are looking for nothing but good news from Mayo:) Pray for a safe return to Texas for Gavin.

Pam:)
