Hey Mr. Mitchell! I have been thinking about you and reading your Mom’s updates. I’m sure you haven’t been really comfortable but aim so glad things went well with your surgery. I think it would be good if you could give a couple of good coughs to get those lungs cleared out!

Keep getting better and tell your Mom to let us know what you get to eat! Take care, Bud! Mrs. A.

It's been said many times before that God knew exactly what he was doing when he placed Mitchell in your loving arms. Giving our family at least many lessons we needed to learn, many pull backs into the here and now, many times to say, does it really matter when something silly is upsetting us. Mitchell looks at every moment, every here and now and lives fully in it accepting what he has here and now as the best thing in the world - a wonderful lesson. God made us look at Mitchy, smile, slow down and say thank you Lord for your gift.

When you were a little girl Katie, I knew you were a very special person. I certainly never dreamed that you would have to face these challenges in life for so many to see how really special you are. You are an inspiration to so many. Those who love you are so glad Paul entered into your life and is such a great support to you and your boys. Also your moms and dads and their support. Mitchell has certainly taught many how to deal with life's ups and downs. Not only deal with them but have the ability to keep smiling and loving life. God bless you all, give you strength and healing.

Heaven's Very Special Child - A meeting was held quite far from earth, "It's time again for another birth," Said the angels to the Lord above, This special child will need much love. His progress may seem very slow, Accomplishments he may not show. And he'll require extra care, From the folks he'll meet down there. He may not run or laugh or play, His thoughts may seem quite far away. In many ways he won't adapt, and he'll be known as handicapped. So let's be careful where he's sent, we want his life to be content. Please Lord find the parents who will do a special job for you. They will not realize right away the leading part they're asked to play. But with this child sent from above - comes stronger faith and greater love. And soon they'll know the privilege given in caring for this gift from heaven. Their precious charge so meek and mild Is Heaven's Very Special Child.

To think just 5 short years ago we were watching and waiting for a little bundle of joy. At that time not one of us knew how much love you would bring us, how much courage and stamina you would show and all with this big grin and happiness in just living. You have shown us too how much your mommy and daddy could love each other enough to give you everything you need to thrive and the courage they have had watching you each day, fighting for you and all the while they too were learning how much love there can be in the package of one small boy. Monday is a big day, a big day for every one of us who have learned from you. God bless you Mitchell as he has blessed each one of us here who love you so very much.

Way to make surgery look easy Mitchell!! Remember what a big deal just getting an IV into him used to be?? Seroiusly! Amazing how far you've come! I'm glad to hear he's recovering from the tonsillectomy....it's never pleasant getting kids to take their pain medicine. I'm disappointed I missed you guys AGAIN!! Pretty soon I'm going to think you're avoiding me~ haha. I'm not at work every day obviously, but if I don't run into you during your longer stay for the reconstruction, I'll really start to wonder :) I'm so glad to hear that you're moving towards the possibility of getting his trach out. I hope that things continue to work out for your plan. It's pretty common to have the Nissen done with the reconstruction, at least here if it's necessary it's almost always done by laparascope, and not as an actual open surgery. I hope you guys get to enjoy some summer days while recovering between tests & appointments! We are going camping at Itasca State Park this upcoming week. It will be the four of us, my inlaws & nephews, brohther in law & his fiance/four kids, and her parents. It will be interesting with all of us. Keep us in your thoughts, hopefully it goes smoothly! Tristan is usually a very good baby. Good at eating, playing and sleeping. I guess that's how he's become a 20lb six month old :) William can also make things quite enjoyable & yet difficult in his two year old way. It's amazing what a joy they are :) We are so blessed. I will be thinking of you guys! and NO I can't believe that Mitchell's getting prepped for Kindergarten! That's crazy! It does seem we were just meeting you in the PICU, and he was having a breath holding spell everytime we were getting ready to send you home after his trach was placed. He's a truly incredible boy! Hugs from Rochester~ Annette :)

Oh my goodness is sounds as though you guys have been having a busy spring! Glad to hear that there is progress in getting Mitchell ready for his LTR. I had better get to see you guys when he's having his tonsils out, I would imagine there is a good chance he'll be watched overnight in our PICU. Everybody under two and most of the kids with preexisting medical conditions stay with us for closer monitoring. Of course they are almost always the healthiest kids in the unit, the ones walking around and eating popsicles or trying to get out of their room all of the time. Who knows, maybe I'll be his nurse again someday? :) I am so excited for the possibilities for Mitchell! Love the pictures, everytime I see them I can't believe how big and grownup he looks. I can't believe it was that long ago I first helped take care of him! Time sure flies. Baby Tristan is already four months old, and at least 17lb! He's a good eater, and sleeper so we're really lucky there. William enjoys his baby brother, it's fun to see them together. It's precious. We are very blessed. Hope this finds you all well! See you soon, Annette :)

Mitchell,
We'll be saying some extra prayers this month that you'll hear some good news while you're visiting Mayo. We sure had fun visiting you in February. Andrew was so excited that you brought the family to his hockey game. You and Sam will have to get some skates soon and your yard is perfect for a rink!! We sure hope next time we're in the area we have more time to visit. Madison sure enjoyed playing with you boys and the tour of the house you gave her. Take care and we'll be thinking about you and saying extra prayers for you until we hear the all clear from your Mom.

Love the pictures and updates on Mitchell. Glad he is doing so well. I got Puddle-eyed when I read about Mitchell telling his brother that he loved him. I take things so for granted when my grandkids say that to each other or us, but Mitchell has had to work so hard to "talk" and say the things he wants to say. He is a remarkable child with equally remarkable parents. I admire all you have done to assure that he gets the best care and gets to his highest level of functioning. You are all an inspiration.

Hi there,

My sister posted before I did because of the kids, lol. I just wanted to say your son Mitchell and other son looks very cute!! My daughter have Trisomy 13 too and we too live in MN. It is nice to know that there is someone just like my daughter Eisha nearby. Just like your son, Eisha have a trach, hearing aid, glasses, and a cleft lip n palet also a feeding tube. Like my sister we were saying, as a cute funny thing, we found Eisha's handsome boyfriend. lol. Eisha smiled when we showed her the picture of him, lol. I noticed he was in the hospital recently, because it was amusing to me that the day after you took your son into the ER I took Eisha as well and we stayed at Childrens Hospital next to United. Just intresting. Anyways, I just wanted to stop by and say hey, it was nice to see sucha a loving family.

But anyways this might be random but I figure I drop by a note since I'm here. But my neice is 4 years old and she also have trisomy 13 and we also live in Minnesota (saint paul). Glad to hear that Mitchell's doing so well! Thank you for calling to let me know you guys were here. I was totally disappointed that my patient didn't cooperate & I couldn't get away to say hi and check in. (Of course I know my job comes first, it just would have been nice to see you guys when you were here!) I hope that the healing continues and the procedure really helps his trachea out. Of course I'm also hoping that all the flu bugs avoid you guys and you all stay warm and healthy for the winter :) I am almost hoping to meet William's brother one of these days, I'm starting to feel pregnant that's for sure. We're due on Christmas so we'll be getting a great present this year :) Hoping for smooth sailing this time around too of course, but we'll see what Will's little brother has planned for us. I love the newest photos of Mitchell & your family :) I just can't believe how grown up he's getting all the time! And Samuel too! I am excited to hear that things are progressing as far as making plans to (maybe) eventually get Mitchell's trachea repaired. Especially excited to hear that it may be a possibility after all, in the long run. Then you wouldn't be able to visit Rochester without visiting with me, and maybe I'ld get to be Mitchell's nurse here (which would be nice, but a little bit weird :). Anyways I totally understand not loving the traveling back and forth. Our families live in Bemidji, MN and it's painful to make the drive even though we have a good time, and love them all. We have had an awesome busy summer here. We bought a house this spring and are still in the process of getting all settled in. It's going pretty well for being our first house. And then on top of that William is going to be getting a baby brother in December, so we've been busy enough with that as well. As if Will being 2 isn't enough :) You can check out our site at www.daunerolson.blogspot.com if you'ld like but the photos are not so recent. I'll be getting to that someday :) Well I am thinking of you guys and maybe I can stop by and see you when Mitchell gets his first procedure done (as I believe he'ld go to 5MB or the Peds Cardiac Surgery ICU). Hoping that things slow down and you have time to enjoy a few nice fall days ~ Annette :)

Katie~
I am sorry I didn't yell out "Hey Mitchell, good to see you!!". I saw you looking at me and it was one of those moments when I was thinking, boy she looks familiar, and then when we were in the middle of the crosswalk I saw Mitchell & Sam and by then it felt too late. I can't believe how big the two of them have gotten!! You're right Mitchell has really grown since I have visited with you guys, and I probably wouldn't recognize you guys at a glance if I haven't been checking up on you guys. :) I had to tell my girlfriends at work here that I saw an old special patient from Fargo who's seeing one of our specialists here~ SMALL WORLD!

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit & are getting further testing for Mitchell and his airway. I know I've said this before but Dr. Thompson does an amazing job, and one of the most amazing things about her is her dedication to her patients. She does feel strongly about having NO trach dressing, which was something new to get used to here. I would love to visit with you guys when you come down for your tests if you have a few spare minutes to burn, or maybe while Mitchell is sleeping during tests and you need distraction :) Glad to hear that everything is going well. Talk to you later :)

Hello, Big Boy Mitchell,

I hope you are feeling better! Too bad the stomach bug didn't pass you by. Nana had it too... and it isn't pleasant!

Have you told Sammy all about the Easter bunny and Easter baskets? He'll sure be surprised, won't he?

We're all concerned about the Red River rearing its head again this week... and think about you often.

Can't wait to see you again. Love to you all.

I am envisioning a "perfect" evening...you and Dad curled up on the couch cheering those SPUDS to victory. We'll be doing the same here. Andrew is so excited as he remembers your Dad had some black and orange golf stuff last year in honor of the spuds!

Thinking of you guys as Mitchell has done such a good job staying out of the hospital so this must be a little different. He really is a popular guy there :). I remember the first time Mitchell was in the PICU and eventually got his trach. Of course he's popular~ he demanded attention from all of us until we couldn't help but just give it to him :) This fall I moved to Rochester and work in their PICU now. It's been a big change but very good for all of us. Dr. Thompson does an awesome job down here, if that's who you're coming to see in May. She really loves the kids she takes care of. I would love to see you guys when you're down here if you have time or want to tour our Children's Hospital. Keeping you in my thoughts that Mitchell is getting over this bug and can be home again soon! ~Annette

Hi, Little Mitchell!

WOW! What a nice slideshow of you and Sam... I felt like I was at the movies! And it made me sooo lonesome for both of you!

Can't wait to show you our new kitty... a little brother for Maize. He adopted us... by sitting on the deck for weeks, watching us through the glass... but too afraid to come in even though it was -25 degrees some of those nights.

But now he is tame... and the vet said he is healthy. He loves the warm indoors. Uncle Joe wants to name him Stockholm, I suggested Glascow, and Papa said Copenhagen. I think Papa's suggestion is best since the little kitty has been COPING with life since birth.

I'm sure Mom is pleased that you are helping her by feeding Sammy! What a big Brother!

We love you! Nana and Papa

Dear Paul, Katie and Mitchell,

I saw your story on Living with Trisomy 13; I too have a child with Mosiac Trisomy 13. The great news is that she just graduated Chaska High School and is really loving life!
Your son is beautiful and seems to be doing so well!
Holly had a almost fatal bout with pnemonia two years ago but ultimately she recovered, respitory problems seem to be a constant with these children.
Anyway, I was moved by Mitchell's story. When Holly was born in 1990 there wasn't the internet or the DNA testing as there is now. It was scary because I felt so very alone. I could not identify with my friends who had children because our lives had become so different. It is nice that now there is more information out there so we as parents can learn more, especially because there really isn't a "roadmap" so to speak when it comes to trisomy.
Take care and God Bless you, Jeannie

I can't beleive how brave your parents are with building a new house and being pregnant at the same time, but at least your current house sold fast. Thanks for the notes/thoughts/prayers for my friend, Karie. Her brain surgery went well yesterday. They were able to remove 97% of one of the tumors and they don't expect any deficits. We are all hoping for a speedy recovery.

Katie - I must say that when the posts started dwindling off I was suspicious... first came the news of the house and I was still suspicious... :) CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so excited for you all! Mitchell will LOVE being a big brother. If you EVER want to escape from the land of boxes for a while, bring Mitchell over here to play with Tatum - they'd have a great time and we could catch up! She plays with another little boy who is already three and has some developmental delays and it works out great. Take care and God Bless you all in the coming months!

Hi, Little Mitchell!

What a fun week-end celebrating your first visit to Dad's childhood home in Hastings... after we waited two and a half years for that day!

But now...the 30 year old Fisher-Price toys are put away... the sheets and towels are washed... the little Intensive Care bedroom is back to it's former self... the pictures are on-line and labeled... the memories are firmly fixed in our minds... and our hearts...

AND now it's waaaay toooo quiet at Nana and Papa's house... and we are waaaay toooo lonesome!

Hope this is a restful time at home while you get ready for your next venture out into the summer world!

We love you!

CHORUS:

I'm proud to be an American

And I won't forget the man who died

And I'll gladly stand up next to you

Hi Mitchell, My, my, you are getting to be such a big boy. We are so proud of you. You are such a lucky boy to have such caring and competent parents. And I see you liked the snow--probably a lot more than your mom and dad do, but then when you grow up and have to shovel it you might have some other feelings about it. It was really pretty though. We followed your progress via the website while we were in Arizona, but don't know if we'll be able to while we are on our cruise. I have been looking for another child who has some of the same medical problems as my son. My son appeared to be a healthy 10lb 4oz baby boy but always seemed to have noisy breathing and sleep apnea, also enlarged adnoids, ear infections and facial/hand swelling. He was later (at 6mos) diagnosed with trachea mylaysia. Could you lead me into the right direction in order to get some more information. The doctors said that he would outgrow the problem by the time he is 12 to 18 months yet he does not seem to be improving. He also has symptons of CF. Can you please help me with obtaining more info on this disease? My email is sawsar612@aol.com

Hello, Little Mitchell !!

Two Thousand and Seven is eleven days old
And starting out well for you... we've been told
...It's fun to see you walking
...And working hard on talking
And keeping things exciting in your household!

Did the Spuds do well when you went to cheer?
Is a basketball championship in the cards this year?
...Did you like the big crowd?
...Was the yelling too loud?
Wasn't Mom wise to remove aids from your ear?

Stay happy and healthy... can't wait to see you...
I love you! Nana

So impressed with the No Hospital stays for 2006 - that's a great feat and we hope for the same in 2007. Wait...didn't you use up most of your hospital credit in the 1st year so you wouldn't have to go back until you broke that first arm in baseball??
Hope you got some awesome Bday and Christmas presents. Did you Mom hide some to bring out later like I use to do?
