I am working on a new project that I am very excited about. I am writing a book about the cancer blogging phenomenon - its scope, aspirations, and reasons for being. I plan to highlight some of the best writing from our blogging community.
As I have previously published your writing in my weekly Guest Post feature at Being cancer, networking people transformed by cancer, I am hoping to get your preliminary permission to use some of your material in the book. I will, of course, give full credit as well as link information. I would also like to arrange for all contributors to receive complimentary copies.
I have not yet secured a publishing contract. But I want to get started compiling some chapters prior to submitting my proposal to a publisher. So if this sounds like something you might be interested in being a part of, please contact me by email. I will be able to tell you the specific posts I am interested in. Please include off-blog contact information.

Each Wednesday at Being Cancer.net we feature a Guest Blog. This week we are highlighting neuroblastoma with two guest posts. The first is by Connie Powell, mother of Miss Madelyn, who recounts what the experience of diagnosis was for her and her family. In the second a twenty-four year old NB survivor, Erik Ludwinski, reflects on how cancer has affected his young life. I know that neuroblastoma has a strong blogging family. So thought you might be interested in visiting. Also please visit the “Neuroblastoma” section of our blogroll, Cancer Blog Links, to see if your site is listed. www.beingcancer.net
Take care, Dennis

Great Blog! I have added you to my blogroll, “Cancer Blog Links” with almost 500 other cancer blogs at www.beingcancer.net, a cancer networking site featuring a cancer book club, guest blogs, cancer resources and more. Please stop by and visit.
I just recently added the "Neuroblastoma" section in the blogroll. Unfortunately it is filling up fast, too fast. I may write a post about it. But I am also thinking about using your May 20 post for next week's "Guest Post" where I weekly feature great writing from the community of cancer survivors. I think you really captured the experience well. I will include two links to your site. Others will want to read your story.
Take care, Dennis (beingcancer@att.net)

Madelyn,
It was so wonderful to read your story and what a strong little girl you have grown to be. In June 2007, my little granddaughter, Gillian, was diagnosed with Stage IV NB when she was 11 months old so we're still on the journey to get rid of the cancer. But I hope she grows up to be as beautiful and strong as you are.

Hi Madelyn and Connie,
We missed the art as you like it event. The girls have been so busy with the nice weather and Kate is not much for art projects. She does love sports, though, and we plan to be at the Riverbats game. Please let us know when you hear what the date is, since we don't go to Centracare very often to get updates.
We are planning to go with Hopekids to the Stars on Ice show. Are you going to that?
Kate had clinic yesterday and things are still going fine. (don't you get nervous every time you say that out loud?) She's feeling more and more like a "normal kid" every day. I'm so happy that things are going well for Maddy, too. We need to remember to count our blessings every morning and remind everyone else to keep hugging thier kids :-)
Take care and please keep in touch

Hello Madelyn! I love your pictures. I can't stop crying right now, and I'm at work, so I'm a mess. I am crying because I'm so happy that you are healthy and such a happy little girl. I know your mom and dad and Allie from Guam. Your mom and I were having our babies around the same time. We shared everything together...all the details, every little pain and joy. Your dad thought we were nuts! We had great times together. May you all have a very blessed New Year! I love and miss you all very much. Hugs and Kisses from Glasgow, KY.

Hi Maddie,
It's Deb from Kimball. Remember me I walked with you at the Relay For Life a couple of years ago,(I am auntie Karlas friend) during the opening ceremony. Wow, 6 years old. How cool are you. 6 is a cool number to be, it's half of 3, less than 12, & not quite 10 yet. I am so proud of you, you've come a long way sweet pea. You have more years as a survivor than I do. I am only going to be celebrating 5 this year on Halloween night. I just got home from work & wanted to jump on line & say "HI" & wish you a very "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" I hope you get A LOT of presents. But, the BEST present of all is your presence, & don't you ever forget that, you are a blessing honey, have a good day. Love Deb :)

Hi! I just found Madelyn's site and wanted to let you know that her and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My niece was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma when she was 4 months old, but they feel she was born with it. Her tumor when found was the size of a large orange and was pushing on her esophagus and spinal cord. She would scream when she was held and had stopped using the one side of her body (because of the pressure on her spinal cord). They were able to remove the one tumor that was also in one of her limp nodes. They couldn't do surgery to remove the large tumor as they would have had to remove ribs and that would have affected her health and growth. She had 4 months of very strong chemo (spent a lot of time on the 8th floor at Children's), and it shrunk the tumor. The didn't have to do anything with what was left of it as it went away on its own. She is our miracle girl. Today Maggie is a very feisty 3 year old. But she is extremely smart and with physically therapy, has regained use of everything and is no longer behind in her motor skills. She was lucky to be so young when she had it. She is our little miracle girl and of course isn't spoiled at all. ;o)

Madelyn and Allie are beautiful girls and I wish your family the best.

God Bless You!

WOW.....5 years old already. I remember the day you were born, Maddie. When your Mom showed you off to me, she had such a shine in her eyes because you were in her life. You were born, and she could hold you in her arms. I just saw the picture of you in front of the Tree of Hope, and wow..you are such a big girl. It has only been about 9 months since I last saw you, and you look so big. I know I am over a month late, and I am sorry for that. I get caught up in certain things and I always forget peoples birthdays. I hope you had a very special day, because you deserve it Girl!!!! Things here in Iraq are going well. I sure do miss your smiling little face. Take care Maddie.

Hi there. I will say a prayer that you can come through your cancer like I did. I used to live in Minnesota for 31 years, but decided I liked warm weather much better and now live in Texas. My Dad was a Lutheran minister in Minnesota and we both know that lots of prayers and positive thinking can create miracles for anyone...even YOU sweetie !! I can promise you that if you truly believe that Jesus is beside you each and every day and KNOW in your heart that He is the creator of miracles and believe without a doubt that He has BIG PLANS for you ahead, then You can be sure He will show you a MIRACLE darling!! I've seen Him do INCREDIBLE things and i know in my heart He'll do the same for you, BUT... you have to BELIEVE it and KNOW in your HEART He can, and TRUST Him to be there for YOU Sweetie !! Ok ? Lord Jesus, I add my prayers to the long list of those who plead with You this day to show us Your gracious mercy and Your Healing Hands ! Lay them upon this young lady and grant her the Miracle of good health, that she deserves to enjoy as we do each day. She trusts and believes in you and now it's Your turn to show her that her faith is not in vain. That You can and will do what You promised to those whose faith is unshakeable. Heal her and give her the rich and fulfilling life that only You can grant to those who know Your name and hold it Holy !! In Your name we pray, Amen

I found this poem on another web page, thought I would share it with you.

WHY US

Most women become a mother by accident, some by choice, a few by habit.
Did you ever wonder how mother of children with cancer are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over the earth selecting his instruments for propagtion with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger...
"Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew"
"Forest,Marjorie, daugher, patron saint Cecilia"
"Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint Gerard. He's used to profanity"
Finally, he passes a name to an angel and says, "Give her a child with cancer."
The angel is curious. "Why this one God? Shes's so happy."
"Exactly, similed God. "Could I give a child with cancer a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But does she have patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she will handle it."
"I watched her today," said God. "She has that feeling of self-independence that is so rare and necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going give to her has its own world. She has to make it live in her world and that's not going to be easy."
"But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you," said the angel.
"No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect, she has just enough selfishness."
The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't seperate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive.
Yes, here is a woman I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take anything her child does for granted. She will never consider a step ordinary."
"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice...and allow her to rise above them."
"And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air.
God smiles and says "A mirror will suffice."

I know the cases are different because of the girls ages but it does my heart good to read about a little girl that is doing so well! My niece is also named Madelyn and her battle has only recently begun with her Neuroblastoma and yet it seems like a lifetime ago when things were normal. I love the web page. I can see your Mom could teach me a thing or two! I pray the Lord keeps his hand over you Madelyn and your family because something like this touches everyone.

Hi Sweetie...
I love coming to your page and looking at your sweet precious smile and it is so nice to come to a caringbridge page and see that you are still doing well.. I have to say that right now my heart is breaking with little Abby being so sick, but each day she makes a few more improvements, so we are just going to keep on praying until she is completely healed.
I am so ready for spring, how about you girls?
We are leaving March 20th to go down and see little Abby in Texas, then we are going on a 5 day cruise to Mexico, I really need a vacation, so hopefully Abby is well enough that I can enjoy our time away from home...
I will bring you girls back something special from Mexico ok...We return back home on April 5th , then it will be time to get out Easter pkgs, so you will have a double suprise pkg coming to you.
You girls have a fun weekend!
Lots of love & hugs to you both~

You and Allie have taught me so much about life and how lucky I am to work with kids who have battled the monster because they are so strong and so loved! I was so grateful to look out into the crowd on Sunday and see you and Allie smiling so brightly at me...I was afraid that I might cry, but seeing the two of you, Christopher and Brittney gave me EXTRA strength and I was so honored to be a part of that day! Hey Madelyn how are you doing? I hope you all are enjoying your summer! For some reason it never dawned on me actually how young you were at diagnosis, your poor parents' minds must have been swirling. Its great to see you doing so well!!! Hey did I ever tell you we found some bunnies in our backyard recently. Actually, our dog did - the kids were in the pool and she was barking like crazy under the pool deck. Finally when we checked there was a bunny nest with a baby bunny in it. Then after more looking through it we found 2 more. So since I have 3 kids and there was 3 bunnies, they each named one. We left lettuce and water and carrots out there but it was never touched so we dont think the mom came back. About 2 days later we took them in to feed them and we had them a week, feeding them kitten milk from a kitten bottle or dropper. They were SO cute! They called them Jean, Robin and Nibbles. My son Gooch called his Jean, named after Jean Smart in XMen. They opened their eyes while we had them and by the end of the week we had them they were running all over, more running than hopping. My husband was convinced they were going to grow up and bite our fingers off, so we turned them over to a Childrens Museum that is a wildlife rehab center near us. I hope they are being taken care of, if they werent already released. I know the kids loved them and they really were cute!! That was our thrill for the summer – hope you are enjoying yours!

Hi Maddie,
Just a note from Great Uncle and Aunt Gordy and Pat. Thanks for the great pictures and we were so sorry to find out about your broken arm. Here's hoping it mends fast. We hope that you could come and visit at our cabin in Alexandria sometime soon. Maybe this Fall, as right now we are flooded out of the area. You could go for a ride on the pontoon or ride in the speed boat and swim in the lake.
Take care and give our love to Mom and Dad and Allie.

Good evening Connie, What a message of hope you share with other families. I just love that "movie" you made of your family. It is wonderful. I am not a "cancer" Mom but I was made aware of caringbridge through a Krabbes family. My 8 year old daughter was born with a brachial plexus birth injury so it encourages me to see the journeys that other families follow with their children. You are so blessed that your daughter is doing well. I invite you to visit my daughters website (it is not big because my scanner gave up on me...I will update it when I get a new scanner) and follow the links to learn more about brachial plexus injuries. www.injurednewborn.com/elizabeth/elizabeth.html
Enjoy your family and good luck in the future. Peace and blessings..Louise H. Beaulieu

Precious Pumpkin,

You are so beautiful. God made you for a very special reason and designed you for a special purpose. I pray that you will come to know Him and live a life pleasing to Him. I pray for your family, for your mommy and daddy who love you very much, and your sister Allie. You have more love wrapped in your pinkie than a lot of people experience in an entire lifetime. Cherish it, remember it, and thank God for all of it. I will be praying for you.

Miss Pam

Happy Happy Birthday Miss Madelyn! It was so nice to meet you and your family last weekend! We are so proud of you for turning the big 3! Connie, the Tree of Hope ceremony was absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for organizing it - it must have taken a lot of your time. It was so nice to see, meet, talk with others who have gone through or are going through the same thing as us. The music was wonderful too. I hope that these gatherings can become a regular occurence. Thanks again, and let me know if I can ever help with a future Tree of Hope. God Bless.

Dear Maddy and Alley - You are so lucky to have a family that cares so deeply for you. A sisters to learn from, who can be an example and a confidant. I'm sure that you and your sister have a long time before you will both truly understand that. I don't have a sister so I adopt friends like your mom who is a truly special person to me. Cherish her and you will learn alot from her hard earned wisdom. Respect your Dad. He will always be a man that adores and loves you. That is what Mom's and Dad's do.

I hear you have both been very good girls this year and you are both very special, so I'll be sure to leave something extra special for you . I'll be at your house in the wee hours of Christmas morning... Don't know for sure what time I'll make it to your area, but I am sure you'll be fast asleep. Connie, Bob, Madelyn and Allie:
I found your website recently and have been reading all your journal entires. First of all, what beautiful girls you are! I still can remember Aunt Karla telling me about Madelyn's diagnosis and praying for her recovery. I'm so happy to see how well she is doing. Hannah, Isaiah, and Samuel talk about Allie and Madelyn quite frequently and it was so cute to see all you together in your videos here on the website. Connie, your journals are very touching and really will be a neat thing for your girls to have in years to come. I am in nursing school now and work at Children's so I know how scary of a plce it can be yet how wonderful so many of the nurses and doctors are. I will continue to pray for your family and read your site to hear about the lovely girls. Take care...

Connie---I could have written your post word for word. Amazing how non cancer parents just don't understand what an incredibly scary thing it is to be told your child has cancer...and yes, how incredibly wonderful it is when they tell you your child is now cancer free...but. Sometimes it feels like a giant sword is hanging over your head...it does get better, but it never goes away.

Connie I just read your reply from great ideas and jumped into madelyn's sight. I know we can not always trace the hand of God but always remember to trust in his heart. There is God's hand in all of this for sure and we sure don't always see his will or can figure it out but trust.

Remember you can do anything thru him who gives you
strength and tommarrow many hearts and prayers will be with you guys. Trust!
Now, Hi little Allie I have heard you have grown so!!!!I hope you remember who I am it has been so very long since I have seen you and Madie. I hear you are very smart and loves school. Are you still taking dance? Have you cut your hair? Have you talked to Krista or Matt lately? I better let go here and say good bye, please don't grow up too fast or atleast until I get to see you again.
Prayers to you all...

Connie,

I just wanted to send you a quick hello and let you know that I am praying for your Mom. Here's hoping she's on her way to a quick recovery. (The same thing happened to my Mom when she was a little girl. She's deathly afraid of large dogs.) I hope you are enjoying your new computer and I hope you had a wonderful birthday! The Vikings game sounded like fun! (I'm going to a tennis match in December.) Give my best to Bob and the girls and have fun with your new little nephew, Jack. (I've always liked that name. I have a cousin named Jack. He was a wonderful baby!) Keep in touch, we'll talk soon. Take care. :)

Connie, you are truly doing such a beautiful job with this website! Thankyou for taking the time to put this all together. I can still remember when you first told us about Madelyn's cancer. Reading your detailed accounts of it tonight have been so emotional for me. You and I had babies just a few days apart, and reading the details of what you had to go through firsthand was just heart wrenching. I am so thankful to God that Madelyn is cancer free, and someday I hope to meet you and your two beautiful girls! On the lighter side, I am privileged to know that Madelyn considers my son her boyfriend and carries a picture of him in her purse! LOL!

I finally had time to come back and read it all. I so remember the day I found out and just hugged Megan for hours after. I could never imagine going through something so tramatic. Also Thanks for mentioning my Mom and asking for prayers for my family. You are the sweetest person and I truely can not wait to meet you in person. It just has to happen in October! Madelyn and Allie are the most active kids I have ever seen. Whenever I'm jumping on the trampoline with Allie, for some reason she can't stop laughing, which always makes me laugh too. Madelyn always has a smile on her face that is very contagious to everyone around her. But, with the joy and happiness come the serious parts. One day while I sitting on top of the slide in their backyard, Madelyn came up to me and told me she loved me. I was speechless. After a few moments of me just sitting there not able to fully realize what she had just said, I looked into her eyes and I saw that she understood what she was saying, and that it was what she honestly felt. After a few more moments, I said, "Oh" and she simply walked back to Connie while I sat there dumbfounded. I still can't believe what happened that day. To me, Madelyn is an angel here to spread happiness into everyone she meets.

Dear Connie, Bob, Allie, and Madelyn,
How wonderful to hear Madelyns survivor story! Diagnosed at 15 weeks old... I can hardly imagine. I often times am so thankful that Austin was diagnosed at the pre-school age. He's old enough to have some control and understand what is going on yet too young to really think about anything serious!
Moving along here, a lady I work with, her grandson was just diagnosed with stage 3 neuroblastoma. I am going to pass your website on to her for inspiration.
Also thank you for leaving a note on Austin's page and sharing your site. You have a beautiful family. Take care & God Bless,

I was so touched when I intially heard about what Madelyn and her family were going through, being I have 2 kids the same age as Madelyn and her big sister. But after visiting this web site I was touched even more!

Beautiful website Connie. Madelyn is truly an inspiration to all of us. I too remember getting that email and call from Karla. Couldn't believe it. But with such a wonderful Mother such as yourself, the outcome was inevitable!! Glad you've been my online friend for all these years, we've shared alot of nasty jokes! How about the oranges? Anyway, I'm rambling as usual, give those precious gals a kiss from me and take care. TTYS...Susan

Oh the pictures are great. You've written what we all feel when we're told our kids have cancer. I love survivor stories. They give hope to those just starting the cancer journey.

I am truly blessed for having such a dedicated
and wonderful wife to share our experiences in this
traumatic event, my prayers are with anyone that has endured the effects of cancer. Our prayers were answered
and Madley is doing great. Looking back at the whole experirence I can honestly say that I heard the worst
news of my life(diagnosis)and in the end heard the best news of my life (cancer free), I have learned a new found respect and admiration for families that cope with struggles of life threatening illness. As for our family, not a day goes by that I don't thank god for Madelyn and
Allie. Connie I love you with all my heart.
Bob.

To be honest, I wasn't there for Madelyn during her cancer treatments as much as I had wanted to be, but my heart was always there even if my body wasn't. I remember one time time with Madelyn and Connie, before Madelyn was diagnosed with cancer, we were in Kohl's shopping when all Madelyn could do was throw up. It was so sad seeing her so miserable and there was nothing we could do to make her feel better. When I found out she had cancer, I was so scared. I didn't understand why she had to have it. She was so young, she didn't deserve it. Everytime she had to go to the hospital for a chemo treatment, my heart raced. I was so scared for her and Connie. I felt helpless because the only thing I could do for Madelyn was pray. (Thankfully that payed off!) I remember a few times after Madelyn was cured...she was so scared to be around other people. More than anything I wanted her to come to me. I wanted to be able to hold her and to play with her without her crying. The day she let me hold her without being scared was wonderful, it was such a warm feeling. I have always felt a special connection with both Allie and Madelyn because of my closeness with Connie. when I was asked to babysit the girls for a week this year, I was both scared and excited. For a two year old, Madelyn is definately a little angel. She laughs, plays, and cries just as any other two year old would do. Madelyn is truly a gift from God and I love all of you with all my heart.

Thank you Connie, for visiting Goochie's site and letting me know of yours. Madelyn is a gorgeous little girl, too many of us CAN sympathize with what its like to hear those words and have your life changed forever with one sentence from a stranger. Its unreal how many kids have cancer, I never ever gave it a thought before Ron was diagnosed. Its truly sickening. I have another online friend whose on also has NB and is struggling right now in treatment (he relapsed) I am glad Madelyn responded so well and is thriving.

Little Miss Madelyn..I missed her entry into the world on January 13, 2000. I will never forget the heart breaking phone call on May 9th, the fear in my sisters voice, all the questions running through my mind, how can this all be happening to our little Madelyn. There was no way I was not going to be there for Madelyn's surgery. The hours of sitting there the hardest, the unknown, their minister there for all of us. I will have to say Madelyn's ongologist made a huge impression on me, he was the only doctor that came in and gave us updates during the surgery, which was very comforting. When he told us how big the tumor was I was totally shocked. How could anyone so little have a tumor the size of a baseball inside their little tummy. When we were finally allowed to go and see her in the intensive care unit the feeling cannot be described....so tiny...so loved....and what a fighter she was. I was so relieved to see her alive and hopefully on her way to good health. I can not even begin to imagine what Connie and Bob were feeling throughout everything. When I got home I called all the prayer lines that I could find in Sioux Falls and then turned to all my internet friends to ask them all to pray for Madelyn, as well as Connie, Bob, and Allie. Madelyn needed the prayers to heal, they needed it for the strength. The outpouring of love and prayers was incredible. To this day I am asked how she is doing. I am so thankful that I get the opportunity to watch my Godchild....my niece grow up. She is truly a miracle! I love you Miss Madelyn....I love you Allie, and I love you Connie and Bob...I am blessed to have you all in my life.

Connie, what a nice job on Maddie's website. The pictures of Madelyn are my favorite too! Madelyn is so lucky to have Allie (Alexandra...love her REAL name) for a sister, she has helped Maddie through this illness more than any of us will know. All my love to you... Grandma Nivala (Connie's Mother)
