I've just recently been diagnosed that our baby girl (Hazel) 21 weeks gestation has T 18 and have been told how negative the outlook is for her. I can feel her kicking and wriggling and it broke my heart to hear this. Thank you to you and people like you for sharing your stories, it is so very important to those of us just embarking on this to know that sometimes little miracles do happen. I wish your wee man the best of love and life and have a tiny glint of hope myself.

Marta,
According to Dr Wheelers assistant in St Paul they do the Upper GI and Swallow test at the same time. Whereas in Minneapolis they like to do them on seperate days. That's why we choose to go to St Paul so we wouldn't have to make 2 different trips.

Hi Marta, nice to catch up w/you again. I was reading the other Cayden's caringbridge guestbook and saw you had signed it. You were the first person to reach out to me when my baby was diagnosed with T18 5.5 yrs ago. My son Braden was born asleep in Feb.03. I'm sure you remember me. Wow had Kayden grown! Can't believe he's almost 7. Did you know I had a SPAL baby 2yrs. ago and named him none other than Kaeden!! So we each spell it differently. We sure are enjoying him & he comes to Braden's grave w/me on a regular basis so now when we drive by any cemetary he yells "Braden!". Glad to see Kayden is doing better now! I actually came out to MN a few summers ago and went to MOA and to the Park Rapids area. We drove our truck & pulled our trailer to our church convention. Maybe next time we'll have to look you up. I have a niece who lives in the area.

Sorry to hear that Kayden had another episode. It does sound like mucous plugs as emmy gets those alot. Have you asked the docs about Robinol to help control secretions? Also both Corey and Emmy have a pulmonary vest, it helps to break up mucous so it is easier for them to cough. It has helped Emmy tons in avoiding plugs. Our pulmo wrote the prescription for them both.
Praying that Kayden stays healthy this winter!
You are so right about seizure meds, it takes a long time to find the right combo and without proven seizures I wouldn't put my kid on them. Of course both of mine are on them but to find ones without side affects was a long process.

Hello. A friend of mine directed me to your web site and and several others. I just typed to another. I have read in part what you have been going thru with your precious son and will read more soon. I have personal knowledge of Trisomy 18, as well as other genetic disorders and am expecially interested in helping ALL children!

I work with people who endorse what is called complementary medecine...that is using natural, healthy substances along with medical. In many cases, healing is accelerated and/or drug amounts reduced. We have found out that glyconutrients (supplements based on the science of GLYCOGIOLOGY) are especially beneficial for genetic problems. We are helping three Trisomy children right now and are in touch with a doctor doing research using glyconutrients.

The human body needs certain substances, expecially for immunity, as found in breast milk, that are not abundant in the average diet. When simply adding what is needed, the body is better able to function as the Creator intended.

I realidy offer information to anyone...whether ill or interested in prevention....at NO OBLIGATION. I can send by email or 'snail' mail! Please check out the information at www.glycoinformation and my web page at www.mannapages.com/oneabbott. Or feel free to call me at 402-254-7202.

I personally use glyconutrients myself as well as our children and 10 grandchildren! For more technical information and journal articles, see www.glycoscience.org. Blessings, Linda

Marta - don't know if you remember me or my family. My daughter, Janie had her palate repaired at the same time Kayden had his jaw surgery with Dr. Sidman on Nov 29, 2001. We talked quite a bit at that time. Then we saw you again at Children's approx. a year later when Janie was having ear tubes in the fall of 2002. We e-mailed back and forth a month after that and that is the last we spoke.

I think of you often and have read your journal from time to time. I just spent the last hour re-reading your journal from beginning to end and can't stop crying. You are the BEST mother to Kayden and all your children. He sounds like such an amazing little boy and I have no doubt he would not be where he is without your undying love and support. You and your family will forever be in my prayers. PS - Have a wonderful time in Orlando. You and your family deserve it.

So glad to see that Kayden is doing well. I was worried when you didn't update us. Believe me, Marta, I'm sure Kayden understands most of what you say and do. He is just selective about hearing it and about responding to it. Besides, he doesn't have an easy form of communication so he can't always tell you or show you that he understands. I'm just tickled pink that he will soon be celebrating his 4th birthday. Can't wait to see some pics!

Hello. I'm so happy to see your boys doing so well. Kayden eating cotton candy, wow. Paul just got listed for a heart transplant today. I can't believe the day is finally here. Now, for the wait. It may not be long though, he is the only B blood in the country in his criteria. It may happen faster than we anticipated.
Take care and God bless. We hope to hear from you soon.

Hi. I found you on another guestbook.
Your story is miraculous and painful all at the same time. I don't know how you do it, and I am inspired and awed by the Mother that you are. It makes me realize just how good I have it. I am sorry that you have to face these challenges, and I will keep you in my prayers for this journey you are on.

Marta and family,
Wow. That is wonderful that kayden ate a cracker. It is so amazing the power of prayer. I'm so happy that all of you are doing well. I haven't heard on Paul's last test yet. I will keep you informed. Paul is tolerating food on his stomach, I hope that it lasts. So, far he is doing very well at home. The other kids( Mariah and Samuel) are thrilled to have Paul home. I wasn't at the dinner for very long about an hour. Rob and I had to take turns. Paul is homebound as of right now. Email me when you get your internet and I'll give you my home number. I wish I could have helped in some way. Do you like being back in Brainerd? I hope we stay in touch. My kids have been sick too, they both had ear infections and bad colds and Ashlin had just finished her antibiotic 5 days ago and started complaining of her ear hurting again so I brought her to the D.R. yeaterday and found out she has ear infections in both ears again! It has been one of the worst winters for getting sick. So are you at home now or in the hospital? I pray that everything works out for you guys and that life gets a little less stressful. Keep me updated on kaydens status. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello sweet Kayden, I have finally been able to sign your guestbook, we are thinking and praying for you sweetie. I hope you can come visit soon for Corey misses you very much.
Braden, How are you doing? I know staying at the hospital can't be much fun when you are little, good thing the playroom is neat. You are such a great big brother, I know you help your Mom and Dad alot.
Jaiden, Are you being good? I hope so, your Mommy and Daddy have enough to worry about right now. Come over so we can spoil you and then send you home, I can't wait to hold you again, I bet you are getting big. Corey better hurry up or you'll be passing him and Kayden up.
Frank, We are thinking of you too, I know how hard it must be for you to be away from Kayden, I am sure he knows how much you want to be there with him. I hope you new job goes well for you.
Marta, I am sorry your Mom didn't make it, I am happy that you know you have a bunch of caring nurses watching after Kayden, not that it makes it any easier on you having to be away for one minute. We are praying for all of you.
Take care of yourself, if you need anything just let me know.

Marta,
I am so happy (and relieved) to see that Kayden is acting more like himself, it is nice to see that smile. Oh what fun it will be to try to get him to keep the leads on for 24 hours (Corey pulled his off). All I can think of is when he pulled out his feeding tube and I think of his grin when he did that. I hope they find out what is causing all this very soon. I have asked everyone to be praying for him. He looks so cute in the picture! Jaiden looks more like you everyday. Marta,
I hope your boys are better soon and that you don't get sick also. I noticed awhile back that you were looking for a stroller/wheelchair for Kayden. I know that they are very expensive and wondered if you knew that mn kids with disablities would help pay for it. Corey is getting one soon. Luckily he is still easy to carry.
Have a Good Day! Take care of yourself

Glad to hear all was well with Kayden. What a giant step it will be to have his trach closed! Yeah! I know how busy I was running around taking care of healthy children's needs. I can only imagine how much this must be magnified for a special needs child! God chose well when he selected you to be Kayden's mom...you seem to find the energy to keep going. Hi Marta, glad Kayden is doing well. Frustrating news about his palate repair though! Hopefully working with the nuk will stimulate his sucking reflex and give him some clues about what to do with a bottle. I'm sure you'd like to be rid of the tube feedings. Thank God he is able to be nourished either way. He looks like he's growing nicely, which says alot for you. I know it can be alot of work to get enough in and keep it down. Thanks for the cute pumpkin e-mail. I'll think of that every time I see a punpkin. I broke my little finger a few days ago, so it's hard to type. I have to keep going back and fixing mistakes. Hi Marta, Sorry it's taken me so long to write an entry. It was really neat to meet you and Kayden at Mearan's visitation. He is a LOVER BOY if ever I saw one! His smile could melt a glacier! It sounds wierd, but meeting you and Kayden has helped me with feeling more "in touch" with my Alex. Alex died as an infant, and I never got to see or hold him. So meeting Kayden gives me some clues about how Alex might be if he had lived longer. I went to your GeoCities site, and visited all the other kids with Trisomy 18 on it. As hard as it is to take care of a special child, I can't help but feel that you are blessed to have him with you! I don't know much about your "journey" with Kayden, but I can tell you love him deeply and are a wonderful mom to him. I have a firm belief that God chooses very carefully the families for children with special needs. I will be praying for Kayden and your family every day, and will check your web site often.

I pray the funeral for your friend's child went well. My heart goes out to her. At least in our case, Mearan was not in any pain when she passed away and we had time to prepare ourselves. God's blessings for your friend and her other child.

How is Kayden feeling today? I pray his fever has dropped and he is on the road to feeling better. How is Braden? I know my boys always decided to act up the most when times were tough with Mear, so I will say extra prayers for him, as well.

Marta,
So glad to hear Kayden hasn't needed oxygen without his trach, but it must be hard to see him have these episodes in the middle of the night. It's great that you have friends that are able to offer you advise on what to do. I will pray that the nights get better for him soon! Take care and try to get some rest.

Wadena, MN 56482 - Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 12:17 PM (CDT)
Hey Marta! I will call you later about this, but I know how wonderful it is to get messages here, so I thought I would post my advise as well as call. I know what it's like to have advise given that is not wanted or doesn't make any sense, so please feel free to ignore any and all of this message too.

Like Kayden, Mearan was bolus fed. We were only able to do this for a short time, though because she was vomiting and eventually she ended up aspirating. Until recently, I didn't know exactly what aspirating really was. I just thought bits of the formula went into the lungs, and that's true it does, but stomach acids and germs also go into the lungs. This is nasty stuff and does massive damage to the lungs.

I know you don't like the idea of continuous feedings, Marta, but I sincerely urge you to consider doing this for Kayden. You can give him a smaller amount over a longer period of time and his chances of vomiting will be greatly reduced.

Like I said, feel free to ignore this message. I just want to do everything I can to help you and to help Kayden! I promised Mearan just hours before she passed away into Jesus' loving arms that I would do everything in my power to help other sick kids. We've been done this long road with feeding tubes, oxygen suction, etc. Please know that I am always here for you!

Love & Many Prayers,

suz

First off, what a cool name!!!! I came upon your site thru Mearan's. I am hoping we can all get to know your Kayden like we did Mear. He looks like a little trooper and a fighter too. I will continue to check in and see how he is doing! Prayers and kisses....

Greetings Kayden and family!

I came across your site from Mearan's. She is my step-cousin and I appreciate the kinds words written about her. She was a gift, we will never forget her. But I wanted to let you know that we are praying for you also. I hope you are doing well today and continue to be strong. Sending you a big hug and hello from Aitkin!

Hi Marta, Frank, Braden and Kayden. Just read the last entry. Sounds very good - what a little fighter. I am so proud of you Marta for being such a wonderful Mommy for your Sons. Hang in there - God only gives you what you can handle. May be God will give you a little more rest as I'm sure you can handle that. Ha ha Take care and talk to you soon.

Marta, Both websites are great! You are so lucky to have so much love and support out there. It brings tears to my eyes to see that there are still people out there who really do care. Kayden has gotten so big and has a smile that would melt anyone's heart. God bless. Kala

Oh Marta. That must be so disappointing. I'll be praying for him and I can think of at least one little angel who's pulling strings for him up in heaven. I hope he doesn't have to get the trach back but I guess it's a blessing that you have that option. Stay strong and keep us posted.

Hi Marta - just read the updates. Sounds like Kayden is off the trach. Good news. I am so happy for Kayden and your family. He is quite the little fighter, isn't he. I love this web-site, that way we all can keep in touch and find out what's going on daily. Take care and keep me posted. I love you. Deanna

Hey! Thanks for stopping by Mearan's hospital room. Kyle was in a rush to get home when he picked us up or we would have returned the favor.

Our thoughts and prayers will be with Kayden as he adapts to being without his trach! God bless!

Hi!
I found your site through Mearan's. I just wanted to say hello.
It was funny when I was reading you entry because I used to drive a school bus until about a year ago and I am about to start driving again! What a funny coincidence!

Can't wait to read your upcoming entries.
