Katja’s calendar

May 4, 2001 – confirmed diagnosis of AML, M7 (Acute Megakaryocytic Leukemia)
May to Oct 2001 – intensive chemotherapy at Children’s

--18 month remission--Katja actually enjoyed daycare and life as a “normal” kid for a while

May 2, 2003 – first bone marrow transplant at Fairview University, Minneapolis
(unrelated donor, umbilical cord blood)

September 2003 – Katja has relapsed again

December 2003 – Katja beats the odds yet again with a “salvage” chemo round at Children’s

February 10, 2004 – second bone marrow transplant at Fairview University, Minneapolis
(again, unrelated umbilical cord blood)

June 13, 2004 – Katja’s long-awaited brother Evan is born!

August 2004 – Katja has relapsed for a third time

--Though Evan’s cord blood was saved and matches 6/6 with Katja, there will be no third transplant All further care will be comfort care and to preserve quality of life. . .

September 18, 2004 at 4:30 a.m., Katja earned her wings

March 7, 2007 Little Brother Dominic is born (double payment on Katja's wish for a baby brother)

Journal

Happy 10th Birthday Katja! You were born exactly 10 years ago today at this time. I will never forget the joy you brought to our lives.

We had your cousins, Grandma, Grandpa, Gwen and Kris over, ate pizza, and had your birthday cake tonight. I finally took out the present I had bought 8-years ago for your 10th birthday. I had bought it when you were two and because I hoped that you were going to beat the cancer, so it was a symbol of hope. I still miss you every day. Evan is going to Kindergarten this fall and will have the same teacher you were going to have in Kindergarten. Mrs. Huebsch will have a chance to see you through Evan.
