Anthony great to hear of your progress and like everyone else has shared the chocolate really is a great treat, and as your grandma mentioned pizza's not bad either. Just think maybe this year you can enjoy some Halloween Candy.

Mark and Shannon, sending lots of love, hugs and energy. Not that it helps in the moment but the fact Anthony is expressing strong emotion/melt downs just demonstrates the strong fighter that he is!

Well I can attest that being held back may not be such a bad thing, In my case I was "accelerated" in math class in high school and my grades went from excellent to mediocre and now I can't be bothered to do math without a calculator. So hang in there Anthony, there is no great rush to grow up.

Happy Birthday Anthony,
We remember six years ago when you were born and in the NICU in an incubator when your mother was touching you and she put her little finger into the palm of your hand and you grabbed it. I can still feel the hair stand up on the back of my neck. What a feeling. Your mother and father have done such a great job caring for you, worrying about you, losing sleep for you, and getting you to where you are today.

Thanks you everyone for all your prayers and thoughts and encouragement that help keep Anthony and and his family going. Keep the prayers coming, there's alot more to be done.

Praise the Lord for Anthony! God definately has given him special strength! It's great to see that his development is right on track and he is able to be in school! We've found out our Ruthie has high levels of lead & other heavy metals which probably contributed to her kidney disease last fall and definately is contributing to her delayed growth & development. But God is in control and we are homeschooling to help her to catch up. She has a care page too: www.carepages.com (register & view her page labeled: AboutRuth). We love you all! Great to see wonderful pictures of such a handsome boy!

Hi Shannon, Mark and Anthony! Well Anthony, you and George have matching casts right now, even the same arm and apparantly close to the same day...April 25th. George fell from the monkey bars at school and broke both the alma and the radius just above the wrist. We go back to the orthopod today to see if surgery will be needed to pin it after all. Boys..... whatcha gonna do with them?!!! Max says "hi". He is doing great. He will have to give Anthony a lesson on those french fries. They are his FAVORITE food item. He even orders them when we go through the drive thru at the the BANK! Anton also says hi to Anthony and hopes he gets better soon. He is always so impressed to see how big Anthony has gotten. Sure hoping we connect this summer. Miss you all and can't wait to catch up! Take care!!!! And Anthony here is the advice the orthopod gave to George, "Keep BOTH feet on the ground!" Good luck with that!
Love,
Jenny, Max, George, Anton and Jim

What a wonderful Thanksgiving this must be for all of you. Isn't it great to be concerned about such an ordinary thing as potty training? Our son was considered late to be potty trained and I'll pass on what our pediatrician said to us. He said to keep at it, but not to be overly concerned. He'd never seen a kid go off to college that hadn't mastered it! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Shannon, Mark, and Anthony,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I just showed Anton the picture of Anthony and he said, "Mom, he doesn't have his tube!" We are all celebrating for you! So glad to hear he is adjusting well.
Max is doing great as well, no French yet, but we'll get there! He has gone 3 months without using his feeding tube, so we are keeping fingers crossed we can remove it in February. (have to wait until after flu/cold season and they want it in place for 6 months without using it for nutrition) We go through a very similar process in that we will take the button out at the doctor's office and put a bandaid on the stoma until it heals. Amazing as you said, what they go through to get it placed and then we just "take it out".
Our boys have had their struggles the past four years. I hope and pray for both of them that it will be smooth sailing for the rest of their journies. Looking forward to getting them together soon! Take care all of you.
Blessins,
Jenny

Shannon, Mark, and Anthony:
First, HAPPY BELATED 4TH BIRTHDAY you big boy!!!! Second, so sorry to hear about the surgery. I hope he has a speedy recovery. George had his surgery while Max was in PICU, don't know if you remember. Two kids in the hospital at the same time in different units is NOT something I would recommend to any sane person who would like to stay that way!! Anyway, George had quite a time with recovery, as did Mom and Dad. Three weeks of long nights for George. We went through two perscriptions of Tylenol with codine...so Anthony is doing pretty well. Just know we feel your pain Shannon and Mark (and having had mine out at the age of 18, I feel Anthony's pain too!) I do hope after he recovers, we can get together. Miss you all and think of you often. Congratulations on another step closer to decanulation. Take care and our love to all!

Hope your days are easier ones ahead. I'm impressed by his weight these days. Becca just broke the 40 lb. mark, Wade only hit it last year. So, perhaps he's in the family groove. Hi Shannon and Mark: It was so good to see Anthony's latest photo; 25 lbs. looks very darn excellent on the little Hulk. That last procedure was a doozy, just like all the others. Thank God Anthony has two very smart parents that are amazing medical advocates and caretakers for him any time he has a procedures. God entrusted him to two people who could really care well for his precious little self. I hope the G Tube site clears up very well with no more granulation very soon. In the meantime, you guys are all three in my prayers. Oh, and good to hear that he will decannulate within a year or so, I was not sure about that before. I'm pretty uninformed when it comes to this stuff but am learning a lot every time I read your journal. And it's good to read about all Anthony's adventures such as going in the boat and going to the church functions. Anthony sort of takes after Mark with his indifference to food right? I well remember Mark telling me that he didn't want cucumbers on his salad because a cucumber is a form of a pickle and they call it a pickle because it is made to be picked off of things. Ha ha! With all those family members in the cake walk, you would never live it down if not one of you brought home a cake! All is well here. Love, Amanda and Lars

Hi Mark, I was talking with Jean last weekend and she was giving me an update on Anthony. I am happy to hear that he is doing well. You may or may not know that I went through a similar experience with my pregnancy. My daughter, Kate, was born 16 weeks premature and weighted 1 lb 1.5 ozs and was 10.5 inches long. She is now 10 years old! She is perfectly healthy and in 4th grade along with her peers. I will say school is hard for her but she is hanging in there. She is still really little; 43 pounds and about 49 inches tall. She isn't on the growth charts but she has maintained the curve of the charts for 10 years. She is full of spit and vinegar! I would love for you to meet her sometime. Bye for now but I will continue to watch Anthony's progress. I wish you and your wife all the best and will pray for little Anthony.

Hello from the Feeding Team at Children's. Just checking the website to see how things are going after the tube placement. We should probably set up a visit again. I received the therapist's sheets and sounds like they would like to set up a therapy plan for working on oral eating. Give a call at 651-220-6372 and we'll arrange a time. Also, keep up that playful high chair time, oral stimulation and oral cares. Make it fun, but keep doing it.
Talk to you soon.

Hi Shannon and Mark!
I just wanted to share with you something Jonny wrote for a school assignment. It is titled "The strongest person I know."

My cousin Anthony Hels is the strongest person I know because he was born 4 months early. He has a tube connecting from his neck to a machine. When he was born his head was the size of a tennis ball and he weighed 1.5 pounds. I don't know him that well because I can't see him. They think kids would have too much germs so I can't see him. He has his own website called www.caringbridge.com. He just turned one not too long ago. When he eats he is really messy. My mom bought him a SpongeBob toy because he loves SpongeBob. One time they asked him where's mommy, he didn't say anything then they asked him where's grandma nothing happened then they asked him where's SpongeBob and he pointed at the T.V. My cousin is always happy. To learn more about Anthony go to www.caringbridge.com/mn/hels_anthony.

Great News!

Yes, it's scary, but so darned positive. He'll likely have MUCH fewer infections, colds, etc., once you get him out of that hospital environment. (I speak from past experience.)

You know, he's going to be healthy as a horse when he gets older. His body will have seen *EVERYTHING* that could possibly have been thrown at it! He'll just sit there and laugh at viruses, scoff at infections.

We're all rooting for you,

Hey!
I've been visiting you for a couple of hours getting caught up. My how fantastic you all are. I especially like the referral to Tony the Trooper on March 5th. I shall refer to him as Trooper Tony in my heart. A noble profession I'd say. It's nice to hear your hearfelt love and humor day in and out. Faith. We can't wait to see Trooper Tony when we visit - even if it is through a window (as I am told it will be).

Love to you! Peace, TJ

Hey Shannon, Mark and Anthony,
First I must say that Anthony is the cutest little leprechaun I have ever seen!

I was getting caught up on the latest journal entries...all of you are incredible...absolutely incredible! You have tremendous strength and you are an inspiration to us all. Of course your are in our thoughts and prayers, just wish I could do more for you, but I know that God is driving and you can't beat that.

I hope you got some green beer on St. Patty's Day! Come on Anthony, keep eating and growing...you have so much to look forward to...strained foods, meat in a jar, and of course our all time favorite...chocolate.

Stay strong, keep the Faith and God Bless.

I was, of course, concerned for Anthony last week about the message Sharon left, went on retreat and kept him in prayer.Sharon left another, more hopeful message and now, today the March 14 journal entry. I truly believe that Anthony has some special work he is doing on earth for us. He is a fighter and bears all this for some reason beyond our ability to know. God knows. God is closer than close to Anthony and to you, Shannon and Mark. If faith is in short supply right now for you two, never mind, a community of prayers are supporting you and holding you. You need not do one thing for lent, God is doing it for you! Love, Sister Katherine

Mark & Shannon ~ God has given you awesome strength. He is calling for you to lay your burdens at His feet and let Him deal with your sorrows & pain. His Son suffered too! "Cast your burden upon th LORD, and he shall sustain you" (Psalm 55:22) It is a difficult thing to do at trying times, but He is in complete control of everything and we need to remember that "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." (Phil 4:13). God has a great plan for Anthony and yourselves & we pray that He reveals it to you when you are ready! God is mercful & full of blessings if we stand firm through the hard times. It's easy to stand in still winds; storms are harsh, but they build us stronger & bring us closer to our Lord. "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31) We love you & lift you up in our prayers!

Anthony, we are praying & speaking "In the Name of Jesus" that YOU ARE HEALED!!!! "Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise." (Jeremiah 17:14) "God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way!" (author unknown) We love you Anthony and God loves you and is holding you in His hand! HE is in control!

Hi Shannon, Mark and Little Love Anthony,

I just read the latest journal entry and am sorry to hear about the trache that Anthony has to have and the long road ahead but it does sound like there are some very positive things that accompany the procedure too... but needless to say we are boosting up the prayer program.
It was so great to see you this past Minnesota visit and finally have the chance to meet Mark and Anthony. Can you believe how long it has been since we last saw each other? Ok, not going to let that happen again.
Anyway, keep the faith and keep on keeping on. You are doing an incredible job!

We were able to spend some time with your Mom & Dad last Friday night after Nicki's gymnastics meet in Mahtomedi. It was great to see them and talk to them. It was a long time after Anthony's birth before the news got to me, but I should have contacted you when I first found out. I read all of your journal entries from the beginning, and am glad to hear Little Big Dog is doing better. He sure looks happy and healthy in the current pictures. Maybe sometime you can show me some of the earlier pictures.
You seem to have kept a good sense of humor throughout your ordeal. I can imagine you have experienced more emotions in the last year than most people do in a lifetime. Hang in there, and I'll be praying for all of you.

Hi--I just wanted to tell you guys about my life-long friends granddaughter, Nikki. She was born very prematurely and weighed less than a pound and was an inch smaller than a Barbie doll. Whn I read your updates, it sounds just like hearing the tales of Nikki when she was a baby. She, too, has had pulmonary hypertension and they have always had to be so careful that she didn't catch anything. She was home-schooled for years because of it nd she has been on oxygen her whole life. The great news is that she is now 15 years old and going to public school--has been since about 5th grade. She now has out-grown her O2 needs and for the last year she only wears her O2 at night so during the day, she is like any other teenager. Keep the faith! Anthony will out grow this, too, and with all of te prayers we send I can't hope but believe that one day he, too, will be doing as good as Nikki. Love, Diane

Shaneen: I just received your parent's Christmas card and learned about your little Anthony. I can't tell you how my heart bleeds for all of you. Anthony will live to be a fighter though and all of this will seem like a distant memory. Anthony looks so much like you did as a small baby....those huge eyes!! Did you know that Katie's first child, Brian, was born at 28 weeks and went through all these same troubles. We never thought he would make it but now he is 14 years old, 6 feet tall, all A's in school, plays b-ball and football and is currently in the highschool musical!! Your Anthony will do all these things too. Why don't you call Katie at 763-553-0559 to get some support (or email me your phone number and I will have her call you). She was one of your first playmates and perhaps you two can reconnect. I know she could give you lots of encouragement. I hope that you all have a Merry Christmas. Love and prayers, Winnie Collins

dear shannon, mark and anthony,
just thinking of you and was glad to see you when anthony was in the hospital, shannon, but not glad he was back in. my 14 yr son, daniel, had a spinal fusion with rods placed for scoliosis on nov. 13th. we were on 3200 for five days and my husband, mark also, took turns staying overnight. i spent the days with dan and played private duty nurse/mom for my "vacation"!! oh well. he's home now and doing well. he actually went back to school(8th grade) for the last two hours of his school day yesterday. all else is fine. the unit is again busy after a much welcomed 2 week slow period. we also startd a web page when dan was in the hospital so i thought i'd check you guys out while i was checking ours this morning. hope things continue on the upswing and stop by the unit to say hi if you're in hopefully only for an appointment. anthony is one beautiful and lucky boy to have such loving and warm parents. i always enjoyed visiting with both of you. happy holidays!

dear shannon and mark, tonya and i had a few minutes in what has been a slower and nice day. we were thinking about you and anthony and how you were doing. we looked for your e-mail site and finally gave up and asked peggy the social worker for it. nothing new at the hospital for us anyway. tonya and i both started 12 shifts last week and survived our first three day weekend but barely. i was ready to hurt a few monitors but after a break and a diet coke, i gathered my wits and finished up my last 12 of the weekend. we hope anthony is doing well and we really enjoyed seeing you both last week. don't forget us. lynn and tonya

Hello,Shannon and Mark! I am so happy that Anthony is gaining weight and doing things now that challenged him too much earlier.I admire your staunch faith throughout this ordeal and know that that will not go unnoticed. In today's scripture readings, being read in all our churches,Jesus said,"Your faith has saved(healed)you.Go in peace." I wish you that peace. You've been in my prayer from the start-even when Shannon had to remain in bed so long. You've not heard from me because I'm challenged on the internet. Your website is the first I've ever visited!!! Not kidding! I am just now going to our noon prayer and we'll be praying for you and Anthony by name. We'll continue the prayer. Love to you and a big HI to grandmother D. PS. This is the third time I tried to do this today and "lost" it each time.See what I mean?

Hi Mark, Shannon, Anthony!
I'm sorry we've been so absent from communications. I am very happy to hear that Anthony is home now. We will now look forward to that day when we can come visit all of you at home. Obviously Anthony and you will need some time to adjust to home so I won't even ask you to predict when we might be able to come for a visit. Just letting you know that we're looking forward to that day!

Best wishes to you all. I'm sure this has been both a very rewarding and yet exhausting experience for you all. Isn't it wonderful!
My prayers remain with you all.

I can't believe what a stupendous fighter you are, Anthony! Obviously, you're receiving all the wonderful prayers we are all sending you. Judging from your fighting spirit thus far, I have no doubt that you will be able to tackle and overcome any obstacles you encounter in the outside world. Keep up the good work. Lots of love and prayers to you and your Mama and Daddy -- and to Gram and Gramps, too.

Anthony,
You are looking so good today! It was great to see your beautiful eyes open, taking in the world. When I look at the picture of your Mom holding you, it reminds me of a passage in the bible that I hope you will become familiar with. It speaks of the joy and pride that beams from her face as she holds you so close to her heart.

2 Corinthians 7, verse 4:
"I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds."

You are a great light to your Mom and Dad. Treasure them as much as they treasure you.

Dear Anthony,
I was a preemie myself, born at 2lbs 3oz in 1975. My mother has told me about all of the day to day trials of life that you and your family are going through and I have had many special thoughts about you since your birth. You are a fighter and a blessing. Your mom, dad, and grandma and gramdpa Dufresne must be so proud of you. You are absolutely adorable, keep on fighting! with love - Danielle Specht (Cheryl's daughter)

Shannon,
We don't formally know each other, but I sit near your cubicle and noticed the messages posted on your bulletin board. My wife and I have a son who's 3 months old so I can imagine the trials you are going through. We serve a big God who answers prayers and I'll keep you and your baby in mine. God speed.

Mark, Shannon & Anthony~ Praise GOD for all His wonderful Miracles and Great Works! Keep up the positive word-blessings (big, strong, healthy. . . ) we are continuing to believe with you in a complete and healthy life for Anthony! God has a reason for every season. The pictures are wonderful & bring back memories of our little babies: Danielle born at 4lbs 7oz (we were fortunate she only spent a week in the NICU she went down to 4lbs and came home @ 4lbs 5oz), Elizabeth at 6lbs 7oz and Ruth Ann at 5lbs 4oz. Danielle was 8 wks early & hasn't slowed down since! God will and does protect. You'all are in our prayers everyday. Keep the Faith in our GOD for he is Awesome!!!

Dear Anthony,
What a day today for your Auntie Jean and I as we came to visit you. It was time for your "dinner" and you opened your eyes now and then, furrored your brow and most importantantly, gave a little squeeze to our finger. Since you were on your back for a diaper change (your dad did the honors) we could easily see the dimple in your chin. I can tell you are made of sturdy stuff - and what a handsome guy you are. May the Lord continue to bless you! Love, Grandma Hels

Anthony, ~~~with the thought that all these messages of love coming to you and your Mom and Dad, will someday be in a scrap-book for you to have, I just want to say, that starting my morning by reading the latest messages or viewing the new photos, brings the Joy of Life to the start of my day. This will probably go un-noticed until you are an adult, but if you come upon this...your "miracle" has rippled into our lives...giving us some of your strenght.
As we continue to send our prayers, thank you for the message you have given to us. Blessed be

Just now heard about Anthony and that this web site was available through Patty Rotzien. My prayers are with you and your husband during this rough time. My nephew has had both his boys born with this same lung problem, but they were full term. I know what they went through and it is tough going, but with prayers Anthony will get better also.

My wife and I have lived through the challenges you are now facing. Our lives were forever changed in a major way and you should expect the same will occur for you. Our prayers will sustain our minds and spirits, regardless of what follows. The details of our Gabriel's first year are forever stamped in the thoughts that come with each new day. Today he is a rock-solid 19 year old immersed in college and volunteer fire fighting/rescue teams. His wisdom and maturity often exceeds that of his parents. We also established many life-time friendships with doctors and nurses that would not have happened otherwise. Just know that no matter what comes in the days ahead that "everything is going to be OK" in the big picture. We will stay tuned.
