Happy Holidays!

All is well with our family. I've been a little disappointed that I have not been able to keep up with our website, but at least thankful for all the consistency up until this summer. I thought I'd attempt to fill in a few details about the kids...

Cully is LOVING kindergarten! He is so happy in general and glad to be with his peers for the majority of the day (we are doing a full-day program after much debate!) Prairie Creek has delighted us in many ways and he is especially benefiting from the intimacy of the school community (only 100 students!) The balance feels great for him to have less but more quality contact with his little siblings, who continue to adore him. Cully is a very thoughtful kid and draws us pictures all the time. His enthusiasm is abundant and we are having a blast watching him discover the world of learning. He is reading some and writing some. His teacher seems to enjoy him very much and while it was still the warm season he was the resident entomologist. His piano lessons are going well. I am constantly amazed at how quickly he picks things up. He has a good ear for music and rhythm. He was a shark for Halloween (see photo) and we laughed when we taught him to say in monotone "land shark" when he rang doorbells that night. It was a lot of fun to experience that night with the kids all so much more aware and able to take it in. (FYI: Tatum was a butterfly, Marcus a ladybug, and Signe a bee!)

Marcus is an awesome kid. He is so compassionate and so unique. I just can't wait to see where he goes with life. He's got that firey red hair that looks so stunning with his icey blue eyes. He's built like a rock (and heavy as one too, at 39 pounds! He still likes to be held the most (which can be a problem for mama's back!) He is officially done with naps as of today, which is a good consistent choice for his little sysatem which relies more on predictable routine. He is an amazing sleeper at night and is in his big boy bed now (still shares a room with Cully.) We still have issues with the calm down process when he is wound up and upset. I now have a "calm room" half way up our stairway (on the landing) so that the kids have a place to go to cool down. I have some "calming" toys and a big soft bear to lean up against. So far it's a good thing. Marcus has some issues with biting and throwing things (which drives mama nutty!) Since I began washing mouths out with soap for biting, miraculously it has almost entirely stopped (I had to resort to this, unfortunately!) Marcus loves preschool! The routine is wonderful and the social interaction is just what he needs, although in general the 3-some moves around in a clump from one activity to the next! He has enjoyed music class, gymnastics and our early childhood classes, as well. He is potty trained (as are his sisters) and doing well with lots of independent play and responsibilities.

Signe continues to amaze us. She is full of information to share (very verbal!) and often impatient about having to wait her turn to share! She is still my "gusto girl" and I love her energy and extreme enthusiasm for things. SHe and her sister are also in big girl beds and loving that. They find great comfort in each other's presence (especailly at night.) She has a special bond with mama, but daddy grabs her away whenever he can. He claims that she is the best kisser. At a party we had last week she anounced that her daddy calls her "Sigalicious." You can tell she is so proud of him. She wears glasses now (started in August, I think) and is doing well now that we exchanged for the extra flexible version. We were "regulars" at the eye center for a while getting new parts for a plastic pair about every week... it was ridiculous! Her vision is a bit worse that mine (at age 3!) She is far-sided and was starting to see with double vision. We noticed this because one eye began to turn in due to lack of use (she would prefer one eye in order to see one image instead of two!) When she wears her glasses her issue is fully corrected, so we are thankful. The other day her grandma was sitting at the kitchen table across from her and she giggled and said "look... 2 grandmas!" I giggled too (ackwardly) and then quickly ran to retreive her much needed glasses! She loves to play with her babydoll, Sally, and adores our cat who she calls "Boomer-kitty." When the cat is in the room, there is no chance of getting her attention. The most amazing thing to me of recent about Signe is that after she has "quiet time play" she cleans up without being asked!

Tatum is delightful. She loves to dance, sing, go to gymnastics, swimming, music and preschool (as does Sig.) She is adventuresome and comfortable with her own ideas. She loves cheese in any form. She loves her big girl bed and still carries her blankie around like an appendage. She giggles a lot and is very loving towards her family. She calls her sister "Sig" and I think it is a hoot! She is also willful, but the outbursts come rarely. Her favorite thing to do is to DRAW. During quiet time play each child goes into a separate room to play independently. I thought they would not separate well, but they LOVE this and unconsciously enjoy having a point in the day where sharing or competition are not issues. They each get music and try to stay put while mommy has some "quiet time work/rest" too! It is really cool. The girls still nap every other day, so on those days we call it "quiet time sleep." On Sunday we had a wonderful day, one that I have been dreaming about for a long time. We took the kids (even though it was freezing outside that day) and cut down our Christmas tree, then came home, watched Snow White (the kids' favorite movie) and decorated the tree together. It was all actually FUN! The kids are at a great age to appreciate the holidays this year and it feels good to have arrived at this point in their development!

We had a nice Thanksgiving with cousins here from Eden Prairie, MN, and Montana. As usual the highs were really high and the lows were pretty bad (even Cully was melting down which is rare these days), but overall, it was a blast. We got to go to the Science Museum, the Mall of America, and, of course, had Turkey with all the fixin's. We are certainly thankful for our family and friends at this time of year.

Warmest Wishes,
Karna
