I am just sitting here at the U of M children hospital thinking of your Ellis!! I followed his story and fight from the beginning. I also have had many struggles with my Son. My little Zach has had 2 kidney transplant and over 50 surgeries in his 8 yrs of life. Watching these kids smile everyday fighting is the only thing that gives me strength to get through this.

As I sit here in front of my computer at 2:30 am trying to finish my paper for my music therapy class I thought of you. One of the points that is required in the paper is what I know about it, any experiences i've had or have heard about. This made me think of you. I'm not sure if you had any music therapy so I thought I would come here and read some past journal entries to find out. I'm now back at the school where your mom & dad teach. I'm even in a class your mom teaches which is awesome!! I just wanted to let you known that I still think of you, miss you and wish you were here on earth with all if us. Don't worry about your mom, dad & Finn to much, just know that they love & miss you! Also know I still talk to your parents whenever I get a chance to. We all miss you like crazy! I'll see you one day soon!!!

A letter from Heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

"It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.

I need you here so badly, you are part of my plan.
There is so much that we can do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you.... in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who is in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain.

And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile."

So if you meet somebody who is sad and low;
Just lend a hand to pick them up, as on your way you go.

Thinking of Ellis, as I always do around the Christmas season. As I watch Riley reach new milestones (kindergarten! Art club! Youth group! Cheerleading! Judo!) Ellis is in my heart. And that long night spent on the floor of the waiting room while the surgeons held our babies' lives in their hands. I am so sad that you didn't get the chance to do these things with him. But it's amazing what he taught so many people. Many times I'll be at the absolute end of my rope with my kids and Ellis pops into my mind and a true calm comes over me. I think to myself, "man, Ellis' mom and dad would love to have this arguing going on" and I remember that I'm lucky. I'm lucky for the truly blessed life God has given me. And little Ellis is the one who taught and re-teaches me that. A pretty profound message and lesson for such a little peanut.
I am so glad to see the picture of your boy Finn. I hope his smile and giggles are balm on your hearts.

I can't beleive it's been four years today, seems just like yesterday. I think of how he has impacted may lifes & how he still is today! I hope & pray that today & everyday is filled with wonderful memories of him! With continued love, thoughts & prayers each & everyday.

Good Afternoon I am so thankful that Finn has such a special birthmark. It will always be a link between two brothers. I know ^^Ellis^^ must be proud. I lost a little boy of my own many years ago and when my first grandson was born my daughter named him Michael after her brother. He was born with a heart shaped birthmark on his hand which we always told him was a piece of his Uncle's heart. He is now 19 and still shares the story of his Uncle Mike and the birthmark. Please know that I am thinking about you all and keeping you close in prayer.

Ellis is in my thoughts and prayers, just like normal, but this time of year he is even more. Your words about Finn's birthmark gave me shivers... Hi Bergstrom's! Just want to say that Ellis has a new friend in heaven in the form of my dear Dad, Ralph! I was able to play many a tune for my Dad (on Ellis' strings, of course) as he slipped away. Dad (and Mom) prayed many a prayer for Ellis, and I can very well imagine them meeting in heaven---maybe with Dad looking a bit younger and Ellis a bit older.
I hope you folks have a great thanksgiving/Christmas with young Finn. As for Ellis? The memory of your son was in ways I can't quite articulate a very real comfort for me the last few days. God bless you, Bergstrom's!

Today I went to a benift for my friends little 3yr old girl that just had a heart transplant a little over a month ago now. Oh, my goodness Sam and Melissa---this young Finneas is just as beautiful as beautiful can be. And the name Finneas? I LOVE IT! I wish I had another grand-kid in the works so I could put a grand-fatherly plug in for that name. (It would be blatant plagerism, for sure---what can I say?)
That hospital "fired" me a couple weeks ago for not being professional enough. Well, I feel pretty badly, but I have my mandolin, I have Ellis' strings and memory; and I'm just waiting to see where God sends me. Right now I go to a nursing home once a week, but I kind of miss the kids. The best of being at Fairview was being so blessed to have met Ellis and Jack. I'll never forget your son---never.

You don't know me, but I know of your story through my friend Dana Cretelli. I have been following Ellis' journey from the start, and now am dealing with some of the same issues you went through. My 3 year old daughter Madi had a stroke in October, which we later found was due to dilated cardiomyopathy, the heart disease that is the number one cause of heart transplants in little kids. We are going to the Mayo Clinic in early July to discuss transplants, but as of right now Madison is doing well, thank God!
I just wanted to tell you that I admire you both SO much. You are both so strong and courageous-Ellis is proud to have a mom and dad like you, I am sure. May God bless your new baby boy and your family. Little Finn already has a guardian angel on his side.

I saw the pictures of Finneas he has some of Ellis trates in him. Looking at all the picture brought tears of joy to my eyes! Tear of joy for the two of you and your god given journey of being amazing parents!! May god continue to bless your family in everything you do. Ellis and god will continue to watch over you! Ellis and his beautiful spirit still touch more lives than you can possibly know. As May begins I'm sure you must be joyously, but anxiously awaiting the arrival of your new little child. Praying and trusting that all will be well.

One of my children told me several times, when he was still very small, that he remembered being in heaven before he was born. He remembered Nana (my mom, who had died many years earlier) rocking him and singing to him before God sent him to live in our family. I've loved that beautiful image, that trust and faith and connection. So don't be surprised if you discover your new little son or daughter has some inexplainable connection to big brother Ellis.

Every time I come to Ellisville and see that picture and wonder what that baby was thinking when you took that picture, but tonight I though it looks like he's thinking 'What you looking at mom'!!! Thinking of you as the sun sets on another of Ellis's birthdays, a big one at that, and smiling with joy at the thought of the sun rising once more when he sends his sibling to you in a few short weeks. I hope all is well. I still think of this boy and remember how brave and beautiful his parents words were as he slowly slipped away.

I was scrolling through my "favorites" today and saw the link to this website so I clicked it on. Although I haven't visited this site for a very long time, I do think of you guys often. I usually keep the sign on a shelf, but while decorating for Christmas this year, I set it right near one of our child-like nativity sets. It is the perfect spot, as I am not only reminded of sweet Ellis and your family, but also the love that God gives us through a tiny innocent baby boy - just like Ellis! A little boy who changed the lives of so many! I wish I could write this more eloquently, but I hope you know my intent. I too am thinking about your family...I think about you and Ellis every day, and especially at this time of year. I first came to this site on Thanksgiving night in 2006.In the next few days, I read the entire journal, and this child and his parents quickly became a "forever" part of my heart. I am so very sorry that your hopes of sharing this journal with Ellis some day on this earth were not to be. But I do hope you know beyond doubt that your sharing of his story has changed lives.

Hello Bergstoms - Been awhile since I posted, but I want you to know I think of you both every day. I think of sweet tender Ellis every day.

Tonite the moon is out and I saw the first star and it always makes me think of that sweet tender boy.

But it made me think of the nurses that work in the NICU & PICU and take such good care of those little sick babies and their families. It takes such special people to work there and take care of those little tenders and help their families through those days and long nights. Hats off to them.

What a great picture of Ellis. I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't think of the three of you. I still have his heart orderment hanging in my car and I talk to it every day. I know that may sound silly but it just makes me feel good to tell him "Hi" and that I miss him. I have a friend that has a son that is 1yrs old that signs. We were out school shopping and I came across a little orange tee shirt in Adrian's size with the motto, "Life Is Good" on it. Of course Ellis and his bright smile jumped into my mind. I bought it and will think of him every time I see that shirt!

A beautiful drawing of your little guy. How precious. I see Ellis everyday as his little red heart still hangs on our refrigerator at home and his wonderful smile as he sits in his Clifford swing on my bulletin board at work. He will never be forgotten and will be in the hearts of many forever. I saw a sign the other day with his name and I thought of him...God sprinkles reminders of him everywhere...yet, I know you don't need those reminders...he lives in you day after day. Been thinking about Ellis so much lately . . . I didn't realize it was two years yesterday that he had gotten his new heart. What a whirlwind of emotions surrounded those days two years ago. I remember it well as I was taking a summer class and was on the computer a lot typing up papers, etc. I'd take a break every two minutes or so just to check for an update. I even set my alarm to get up a couple of times during the night to see how things were going. We are all still here, thinking of your sweet boy so much. The guest book posts might not come as frequently, but believe me, Ellis has touched our lives so deeply that we will always hold him close.

We have seen many of Sam's band concerts when he was at STMA and have appreciated his talents, but it was very impressive hear that great sound come out of your choir, Melissa. We've seen you accompany so many of our local musicians, but not in your directing role. It was an honor to be there to hear the premier of Ellis' song, and an honor for Max to be a part of it. What a AWESOME concert that the two of you put on, it was BRILIANT!! I loved every second of it. When the band played "Bounce-Back for Ellis" tears came to my eyes, I had goose bumps and I remembered how much Ellis loved drums, tubas and also his overall love for music. I felt peaceful durring his song and just smiled while tears filled my eyes knowing Ellis was more then likely there with all of us the whole night! I bet he is telling everyone in heaven about his new song and how proud he is of his mama and dada. I still think about Ellis and the two of you often. Hi Sam and Melissa! Oh, wow, it was SO GREAT to see you guys in action tonight! (Melissa, you were positively radiant!) The whole concert was fantastic---I savored every second. And the "Bounce-Back for Ellis"? Superb! I started off kind of teary-eyed, but soon I was grinnin' ear-to-ear. The tuba/trumpet parts just cracked me up---I could just imagine kids playing like they were elephants or something! The rest of Paulus' works that were performed were brilliant---what a treat! I LOVED "Pilgrim's Hymn." And that beginning song---Tres Cantos, etc.? What a delight! Thought I was in the middle of a rain-forest jungle!
Now, I'm not certain on this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the same God who made heaven and earth could have (and thus probably did) drop a cosmic microphone on stage for the benefit of heaven's inhabitants.

I only wish I had brought my video camera so I at least could have re-watched the "Bounce-Back for Ellis."

Again, Sam and Melissa, it was wonderful seeing you guys in your professional element tonight. It was a sweet, sweet gift from God, and I mean that very seriously.

PS Melissa, was your Dad there? You tell him I said hi, would you?

I come here periodically... It still doesn't seem real. I think of Ellis often and find myself being reminded to slow down and enjoy this journey. Too often I allow myself to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life or the frustrations of "it all". I search for words to bring you comfort and find none. Just know that he is NOT forgotten. That he and his story continue to remind me of the important things in life. (i.e. the smile of my children, the rocks in a parking lot, nature, the drums...) I only knew your family a few years through School and Theatre but in that time I was deeply affected by you all. Ellis, you are about the most patient baby I've met, playing quietly and practicing walking with Mama up and down the stairs in the theatre, through out very long rehearsals when even I wanted to throw and fit and have a good cry - And I was the Stage Manager! :0) I remember the scariest time of MY life to date was when Mama Melissa gave little old ME the beeper to hold during Godspell. I experienced just the tiniest sliver of what Mama and Dada went through every moment of every day and it gave me a whole new perspective! You can never appreciate someone else's amazing and sometimes scary life unless youre there living it. Not only is Ellis THE bravest boy ever but Melissa and Sam are too! I will forever be changed for having met your amazing family! You three have been a blessing to everyone you've encountered! I will be at the concert - with many much kleenex. I'm excited to hearing Ellis' song :0) I send lots of love and admiration to you Melissa, Sam and Sweet Angel Ellis!!!

Ellis Bergstrom: Never forgotten, always an inspiration. I live a block away from the Ellis Drum Shop in Richfield, and it never ceases to pique my memory and feelings. The other day I ran into some Rock-and-Roll superstar (Richie Sambora) and he signed the mando (the one with Ellis' Strings). I told him I played it at the hospital, so he signed it, "Get Well Soon!". I hope Ellis would have approved---I don't' know much about this Sambora guy except that he winced everytime I called him "Mr. Zamboni." Too many names floating around this old noggin to keep straight.

My father died when I was about 4 and I am sure that my mother must have told me about heaven and such. Every time that someone famous would die, I would think that now my father must know them.

So my sweet darling Ellis, are you conversing with Einstein, how about Ghandi?? Maybe Beethoven, is he letting you conduct the heavenly orchestra. Are they telling you how much of a difference you made here on earth in your short life. How many people's lifes you affected for the good.

I know you are looking down at MaMa and DaDa, I know how proud you must be of them. They are sooo strong. I know they miss you terribly. The ache is still strong, but hopefully healing.

I will watch tonite for a star shower and know that it is for the celebration of your life!!!! Here on earth and in heaven!!!
