I am so happy you have decided to tell Jack's story--a story that needs to be told so it might prevent another sad ending.

I hope you don't mind that I have asked friends to visit your new website via my own husband's cb site.

I continue to keep you all in my prayers. God bless you.

Hi
My name is Jenna and I came across your site. Angel Jack is a handsome angel, a hero forever, and his smile is shinning down on all who loves him, knows him and has been touched by his story. He will be in my thoughts and prayers, http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/champ291

A letter from Heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

"It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.

I need you here so badly, you are part of my plan.
There is so much that we can do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you.... in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who is in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain.

And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile."

So if you meet somebody who is sad and low;
Just lend a hand to pick them up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.... you're coming here with me.

Your entries always touch my heart. Such a special young man....no...such special young MEN you were blessed with!

My husband lost HIS fight on July 4th, as the fireworks touched the sky. It is different when it's an adult. He lived such a good life.... But just plain unfair when it's a little guy.

I am sure by now he has met your son. Kids always loved him....as did I.

Keeping you in my prayers!

AND GOD SAID

I said, "God, I hurt."
And God said, "I know."
I said, "God, I cry a lot."
And God said, "That is why I gave you tears."
I said "God, I am so depressed."
And God said, "That is why I gave you Sunshine."
I said, "God, life is so hard."
And God said, "That is why I gave you loved ones."
I said, "God, my loved one died."
And God said, "So did mine."
I said, "God, it is such a loss."
And God said, "I saw mine nailed to a cross."
I said, "God, but your loved one lives."
And God said, "So does yours."
I said, "God, where are they now?"
And God said, "Mine is on My right and yours will be in the Light."
I said, "God, it hurts."
And God said, "I know."

But we can gather up
It's lessons and move on,
Stronger and wiser.
We can't control the future…
But we can send our dreams
Ahead of us
To help prepare the way.
We can live each moment…
Heart and soul,
And cherish this day's
Greatest gift…
The gift of now.
May peace with the past
And faith in the future,
Gently guide you through each
Precious moment of Today.

Hi Corbos!
Thanks for the note of support. It is good to reconnect with parents who have been there when you are back in the trenches of hospital life.
Just wanted to let you know Jack and your family played a big part in our decision to switch to Mayo. It is a huge pain figuring out a whole new hospital and system, but we are very confident we've made the right decision. We see a difference in care already, and this is only our 2nd day here! Anyways, hope you are all doing well. Take care.

Wonderful news about the adoption and I am praying for your plans to come together very soon.

Please know that I am thinking about you during this holday season. I would like to share this special prayer with you.

Dear Father who art in Heaven...
Please join our family on this Thanksgiving day
And bless each one as we sit down to pray
As we remember those who have joined You above
So dearly missed and deeply loved.

Please provide us strength on this Thanksgiving day
Bless us with memories of those faraway...
Please grant patience to family and friends as we grieve
And help us reach out to others who are bereaved.

We give thanks to You on this Thanksgiving day....
For Your presence in our lives each and everyday.
For Your comfort, guidance, and never ending love...
And for taking care of our loved ones...in Heaven above.

As we light this candle on this Thanksgiving day...
And it glows in memory of those in Heaven today....
May their lights always shine down on us and give us light...
And may we feel their presence along with Yours tonight.

May the peace and tranquility of this Thanksgiving day
Be an everlasting light within each of us along the way...
Lets bow our heads and give our Thanks to God above..
For our blessings, whether on earth or in Heaven above...
Amen

I started following your site years ago when Ellis Bergstrom was sick and passed away. I hadn't checked your site for several years now but saw this newest post. It turned my stomach. How dare they? I hope you sue this hospital and everyone you can that was involved. It won't bring Jack back but it might prevent it happening again. I will never trust that hospital again. I'm so sorry you had to go through this after losing Jack. It is absolutely horrible.

Dear Corbo family,
I have been following your site for a while but never have commented. I have prayed, hoped, willed, cried and prayed some more throughout reading about your family, especially your Jack. I find the lack of communication and treatment that Jack "received" disgusting and incomprehensable. And every night I tell my husband, "The Corbos must be doing something right because I've never seen so many U of M Children's Hospital commercials!" You are supported. I will continue praying for your family.....may you find peace.

Robin, Todd,Cooper and ^Jack^:
It seems like it cannot be 5 years since Jack got a new heart. I am so sad for you and so angry that some people and a system we should trust were negligent in their care of your son/brother. And further saddened by Richard's story. Know that there are people who hold you up in prayer.

God bless you. I never got to write Jack's song as our computer was infected by a nasty virus that ate everything in the system. I lost all the information you gave me. If you would still like it done, and happen to have a copy of the information you sent me... I would be honored to still do it. I am so sorry for your loss and at the unjustice that was done by the hospital staff. As a parent, I cannot even imagine the suffering you have gone through and continue to endure. I will continue to pray for your wonderful family, here on Earth and in Heaven.

Your Jack will never be forgotten---never in a million years could I forget his red cheeked hearty laugh! What a kid! I think of heaven with Jack and Ellis and I don't know whether to cry or smile. So I do both.

I just though of you guys when I read this on a different caringbridge page.

The Good Mother
by Erma Bombeck

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit.

Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with life threatening diseases are chosen?

Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

"Armstrong, Beth; son. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."

"Forrest, Marjorie; daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia."

"Rutledge, Carrie; twins. Patron saint, Matthew."

Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a child with a life threatening illness."

The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."

"Exactly," smiles God, "Could I give a handicapped child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."

"But has she patience?" asks the angel.

"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it."

"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has her own world. She has to make her live in her world and that's not going to be easy."

"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect - she has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps - "selfishness? is that a virtue?"

God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word'". She will never consider a "step" ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle, and will know it!"

"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice....and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here by My side".

"And what about her Patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid air.

"A mirror should suffice."

Todd and Robin,

I read a book this weekend and thought of you. It is called Josie's Story and is the painful tale of a mother's fight for justice after the loss of her daughter to an overdose of narcotic days before her discharge from Johns Hopkins. It was painful to read. There has not been a day in my near 22 year career (peds. RN PICU/Oncology)that I have not thought long and hard about the frightening, albeit awesome responsibility I have caring for other people's children. I do not for one second take this responsibility lightly. On the contrary, it is a gift!

I am sad that a few negligent and conscienceless people stole your boy from you. I am equally sad that it has painted a picture of a medical sytem that is selfish and corrupt. Sadly, in your case this is true. We are not all like that narcassitic nurse you describe. I will never pretend to have all the answers and pray that we as a society find them. I will however pray equally as hard that rhetoric and partisanism do not cloud what is really at stake. Everyone in this country has a right to and deserves healthcare. I pray this dream was not lost with Senator Kennedy and that common sense and equality will prevail.

As always I pray for your family andif you would like to check out Josie's Story by Sorrel King and her patients right webpage go to www.josieking.org

I preface this with the statement that I agree that U of M did not provide you with thier best care and I support your efforts to change and expose the substandard care they have been providing. I am shocked and mad at the level of care Jack received (or didnt recieve) and cried over his passing.

But with a heavy heart I have to say that your interpretation of HR 3200 Section 1233 is WRONG. All it means in the heavy language that is the federal register is that now Medicare will allow you to see your doctor to have his advice on end of life choices already availiable such as living wills and advanced directives where as previously only the patients family and usually thier lawyer were involved and medicare will pay for it instead of it being a non covered service (meaning the patient paid for it all). This means the legal medical terms can be explained and you can write an accurate legal document based on what you really want for care. It is not mandated by the government that you have to have such a consultation and beyond giving guidelines as to what would define a visit for this purpose and be reimbursed by medicare as such it does not propose to tell anyone what their end of life choice should be.

The "death panels" interpretation is just scare tactics. Its NOT true. Read the real proposal at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c111:1:./temp/~c1117LE3r3:e513253:

You are fortunate that you have never had to decide which child was going to get therapy or see the doctor this month because you couldnt afford both to been seen the same month. Many of us are not that fortunate. Healthcare reform cannot come too soon for us. I have 2 children with different diabilities. Having to choose which one gets services in a month because I cant afford both is not a place I'd put anyone else in. We make too much for assistance and not enought to afford all the care they need. We have to make do with a little here and a little there and hope that maybe it will be enough.

The insurance companies that rake in MILLIONS are scared of this legislation and will stop at nothing to scare america from embracing reform and change. They dont want to loose thier 12 million year end bonuses and private jets. They make profits off our very lives. Healthcare should not be a profit making venture.

Dear Corbos: You are performing an invaluable service to the community by exposing the U of M Fairview for what it is. I think I told you the hospital "fired" me from my volunteer position and never gave me a cogent reason as to why. I just wonder if one of their lawyers happened to read something I posted supporting you guys? Seems like it would be petty beyond belief to axe a volunteer for such a crime, but I wouldn't put it past any of those people. Any institution that will jeopardize and finally take a young kid's life to line their coffers is capable of anything.

Dear Corbo's: THANK YOU so much for sharing that story. It sent a chill up my spine, a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. I never know what to make of things like that other than to think that there is so much more going on than we could ever fathom---and for that I'm thankful! In terms of the adoption? WONDERFUL! As far as your investigation goes, I just don't know what to think. I can't bear the thought of an institution exploiting desparately sick kids just to inhance revenue, and I want so much to believe its not true. But what happened to Jack is irrefutable---it is horrific beyond words. May the light of truth shine brightly on your quest!

Hello Corbos!
Isn't is strange how words affect us? Those words spoken on that day - what a shock ! And yet you chose it as a blessing and a positive message. May God bless your adoption process. I agree with you that the 2 different results do not make sense, but I am sure that your efforts will improve awareness and put a more human face on rules and regulations for some people.

Dear Corbo's

Your journal update on Jack's Anniversary was so sweet! I will never forget Jack and how big of a smile he always had on his face for everyone, even when he was being "tortured" with all he went through. You are such a wonderful family, and I will always remember you in my thoughts and prayers, especially since you were one of the only families I really remember from my short time of working on 5A. You are all such an inspiration to me, and to know that Jack is watching over us all makes each day a lil' brighter! It has taught me to be a better nurse, and definitely being on the patient side has made it much easier to really know what these kids go through and how strong they are. Have you ever thought about making a button with Jack's picture on it so that his story could be shared by so many, and hopefully help in preventing such a terrible series of events from happening again? I would definitely purchase one! You are always in my thoughts and prayers.

F.R.O.G AND B+!

Dear Corbos,

I read your entry yesterday and I just was at a loss for words on what to write to you. I still have nothing profound or wonderfully insightful to tell you, but I want you to know that I am thinking of you and am remembering Jack and his courageous journey. The tears were flowing when I was reading your entry and I pray that you will find more peace in your lives during the upcoming year than last year. I can't imagine walking in your shoes, and I know that if it was me I would need someone to hold me up. Mark and I are always here to listen and just be friends that can understand mostly what you went through. The invitation is always open that we can get together. Corbos,
I am thinking of you on this difficult day. It's hard to believe a year has gone by. Your entry was beautiful, very hard to read through the tears. Just as you couldn't be more proud of Jack, I know he is smiling down on his family, and he couldn't be more proud of the amazing work you guys are doing. I will continue to pray for you, as always.
Love,

Anyway, you have all been on my mind quite a bit and I want you to know that we may not see you everyday, but keep you close to our hearts. I can't wait to hear about Coops first plane ride! Hello Corbo's! I just read your note on Ireland's CB site. I didn't know you knew them---Ireland is a precious little gal. Your journal entry on health care is SO good. Just to get electronic records would be such a leap forward---what cost savings could be achieved if Drs. could electronically see the whole picture! But you are so right on that if basic ethical behavior is not front-and-center, reforming the health care system will be futile. I still am amazed and repulsed that an institution with such a grandiose title---"Fairview University" could sink so low as to risk the lives of their most vulnerable patients by locking them into a 4,000 dollar a day virus incubator (aka "hospital room"). It is tragic beyond belief. If I think about it too much I'd never go back up there to volunteer---but that wouldn't accomplish anything. Now, to change the subject---I hope Cooper is having fun with the warmer weather. Spring mud and slop is messy, but so much fun to little guys! I pray for the very best for you three---in spite of Jack being gone, I pray that your family will be blessed. It is so hard---so very, very hard. Hold Cooper close always!

Robin, Todd, Cooper, and of course dear Jack, your story continues to inspire, enrage, and shatter my heart into tiny pieces, and there are really no words to describe the depth of emotion you must carry all the time.

It seems so unbelievable that hospital and care decisions would be made as you have discovered, but I have seen suspicious signs as well. Our little girl has been to 2 ERs in 2 different states in her 3 years and both times was admitted for three days of in-patient tests and observations. Like yourselves, we have private insurance. I have often wondered if she'd have been sent home with a couple of prescriptions if we were on Medicaid - and whether that would have been a better treatment option.

The system is broken and seems to be getting worse all the time. Perhaps change is coming. As you know much too well, it will not be soon enough.

Ann Moody

Hi you guys, I check in here from time to time to see what's up. I was thinking, and this may be dumb, but have you spoken to the ACLU? I don't know if this would fall under their jusisdiction, but weren't Jack's civil liberties infringed on by keeping him in the hospital when he didn't need to be? Just a thought.

Our prayers are with you,

Kim Shimota
Lakeville, MN usa - Monday, March 2, 2009 11:27 AM CST
To the lady upset by the medical assistance topic. I really don't think anything demeaning was meant by it. Working in the admitting department of a hospital I can tell you that hospitals that participate in the Medicaid program contract with the state to eat a large portion of the cost of medical bills for medical assistance patients. As a matter of fact, a dentist makes roughly $8 per visit with a medicaid patient in comparison to over $100 with a private insurance patient. A lot of times when you get these really sick kids the hospital not only makes NO money, but actually takes a loss with medicaid patients.

That money has to be made up somewhere, and it is made up with patients with private insurance. It's not right, but it's the way it is.

I can see how the Corbo's question it. Was little Jack made inpatient more than he should have because his insurance hadn't yet capped and he was bringing in more revenue for the hospital than others? I don't know that we will ever know that answer, but it is a valid question.

It has been a while since I have checked in this site; however, you remain in our thoughts & prayers each day as you continue to fight for the love of your child and all children. I am totally moved by your fortitude and perseverance in this quest for answers and for absolute rights on such a vital issue to not only you but many facing these type of circumstances. It makes true sense, true commitment and forthright love for such a young, beautiful & innocent child who lost his life way too young! He smiles down from heaven for you both as you continue the fight. God's blessings today and always as you face each new day for the love of your child whom you have lost and the child you have near & dear to you today!!!! -- Donna ")

WOW! What a slap in the face to any child that happens to be on Medical assistance. Do you know that children with a verified disability qualify for medical assistance regardless of parent's income. I am a Registered Nurse with a four year degree and my husband is a teacher we both work hard for all we have but thanks to a drunk driver our sweet little four year old has been left disabled and is sadly one of those " Medical Assistance" people you kindly refered to. We all have pain and we all have a story so next time you decide to label people by the type of insurance they have think how you would feel if someone said our child should live and yours shouldn't because we have more money.... Im sorry for your loss and understand your anger but please dont judge a person by what they have or don't. Not to mention the fact that working families can make a decent wage, work hard and still qualify for help... Medical assistance does not equal lazy people sitting on the couch eating chips purchased with food stamps...

We have not forgotten Jack and his family. You entry for Valentine's Day is right on!!! Go Mama Bear Go!!! We sure wish that Jack was still with you and that you could be celebrating Valentine's Day with a new heart. God Bless that boy for all that he went through and the fight that he gave and God bless his family for everything they endured also. Our story has followed a different path, although also frought with danger, but we seemed to get out of the dark woods just in time to save Abby's life. She is doing wonderfully and she is growing like crazy. She grew 2 inches in just a month and half and her feet grew from size 8.5 to size 11! Awesome. She can jump off the ground now with both feet and actually run. I know that we haven't talked on the phone recently, but we are always here and we have great ears for listening. Please call if you want...anytime. Take care.

Thinking of Jack and the Corbo' as Valentine's Day approaches. Jack's original and donor hearts may have physically had their defects, but his true heart, his spirit and love of all things is wonderous...it is that Jack that makes me smile, it is that Jack that is so very precious. This Valentine's Day I will remember all that worked so well in Jack and not the physical attributes that failed him.

Jack may your justice be true and swift. You are remembered buddy! And so are you Cooper.

Happy Valentine's Day to the Corbo boys...may our hearts know half the love that these little ones have!
