Happy 8th birthday in heaven, Charlie Bear! It's hard to believe that it was 8 years ago that we were blessed with having you in our lives. Our SMA/KFAN fundraising event is on your birthday this year. I can't think of a better way to spend the entire day than working hard to spread awareness and raise funds for research for stupid SMA. We continue to keep you close to our hearts, and will always miss you terribly. Love infinity special boy.... mommy

I love you Charlie Bear! I can't believe I had the strength to get through your sister's episodes, and to get her help in time. during the last week in September, 2007 channel 4 (nbc) had a segment on the morning news about a girl, i forget how old, who has type II SMA.! i was thrilled to see the coverage of this horrific disease on national television and the accompanying interview with her and her mother and hope that more awareness comes from the "outing" of this disease on national television. She is a wonderful girl who has published some books about her dog and the adventures he goes through in day to day life - adventures she cant have herself. YEA!!!! and cudos to channel 4 and all the people who tirelessly raise awareness.

Hi Baby boy!!! This week brings back yucky memories of 6 years ago. 6 years ago you and I spent most of Labor Day weekend in the ER trying to draw blood from your little body, to get the ugly SMA diagnosis. "And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them"

I believe that all little children have a special place in heaven, and I know they are so loved.

I am very sorry for your loss. You can tell by looking at his pictures that he was happy and loved by many. My 4 yr old son, Cason, was thought to have SMA1 at birth, but was later dx with myotubular myopathy, another fatal childhood disease that falls in the MD umbrella. I pray that God continues to give you strength and that one day there will be cures for these neuromuscular diseases and no other parents will have to endure this kind of pain.

MIAMI, FL USA - Wednesday, July 25, 2007 11:02 PM CDT
God bless you and your family. I was just now introduced to Caringbridge through some people who used to work with me, they just had triplets - 3 girls, last Friday, July 20, 2007 and all 3 are under the 2 pounds, 9 ounces weight. They are doing okay and progressing every day.
So while I was on this website I clicked on Charlie's Story and read it, through tears, and I am writing this through tears. We do not know why things happen, we do not know the purpose of everything, but God planted us here for a reason and a purpose. It is okay to ask God "why" He gives us miracles through babies, and "why" is the baby taken from us. That one is a very hard thing to come to grips with. Believe in God, make sure you have accepted Christ Jesus so when the time comes for you, you will be in Heaven and will be united with your baby for Eternity. Then you will know and understand the whole purpose of this. I am very sorry for your loss. I lost a very dear friend 8 years ago to Lou Gehrig's disease, he was just a few months shy of being 50 years old, he succumbed to it almost 3 years to the date of his final diagnosis. ALS is a horrible horrible disease, the mind is still just as sharp as a tack, but the body is in such agony. I am thankful for your son that he did not have to go through all the pain and suffering. It's such a hard thing to see happen. Chuck believed in God and he kept his faith through all of it, to the very end, there wasn't a day he was without a smile, he made us feel better. I know I will see him again in Heaven one day. You take care, God bless you and I pray that things are going okay for you. Paula Foster, Urbandale, (Des Moines)Iowa

Happy Birthday in heaven to our Angel Charlie! Like many other mom's to angels, I can't believe you are already 6 years old. I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday. We are up north, with you, today -- thank you for sending the sunshine. But can you cut back the humidity? Like many, I ran into your website due to someone's illness. I've been here several times and each time I get the same feeling of sadness not only for the loss of such a small child, but also what your family must have gone through and is still going through. I hope you will continue to maintain this site . From what I've been told by my friend on board, it really makes her day to see guests signing in even if she dosn't know who they are. You see we lost Amy over 30 years ago and Todd nearly 29 years ago, to SMA. I understand your pain in losing a child. After all these years it still hurts. Charlie is so beautiful! I created a webpage for my niece on caring bridge because she is ill and I stumbled onto baby Charlie's story. I was taken by his picture. I have a 6 month old baby boy named Nathan. My heart goes out to you and your family. You are so brave and so strong I am in awe and admiration of you. Just the very thought of what you have gone through brings me to tears. It is a strong reminder that we are only borrowing time here. I often look at my son and say to Jesus "I know he isn't mine Lord, I know he is yours, I thank you for choosing me to be his mother, for allowing me this honor". Baby Charlie is an angel. And even in his short time he came to do God's will. God bless you always.

Sincerely,
Martha Lucio

We just read your story of your precious Charlie. We have been on the caringbridge site since Nov 06. My husband, John, was diagnosed with myelogenous leukemia, was in UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL for 44 days. The rounds of chemo did not kill the cancer cells so we returned home Dec. 12, 2006 to live with leukemia. At that time he was given 6 to 8 weeks to live. That was more than 6 months ago! God touched him on Dec. 26 with our Christmas miracle. We go to receive blood transfusions about every 2 to 2 1/2 weeks and we are thanking God for each "extra" day HE has given us together. We will be praying for your family. If you would like to check our site it is, www/caringbridge/visit/johndunn.
With our love and prayers for you,

Hi Charlie Bear! I continue to think about you endlessly. The girls have now cleaned out your room from their toys, and it's reminding me of when we were redoing it prior your arrival. I remember standing there looking at it and visioning a brand new baby in that room. What a thought. Who knew it would be filled with medical equipment, and a desk for round the clock nurse. It will "always" be Charlie's Room. I smiled when I heard Abby's friend over the other day and said "what happened to Charlie's Room". You forever will be in our hearts and on our minds...daily. Love you pumpkin pie!!! Your birthday is around the corner, and the girls are already looking forward to Charlie Day, and your picnic (OK, so I'm the one that is mostly looking forward to it this year!:)). Keep shining over us each day!

Dear Cowan Family, I hate to here about baby Charlie. But know that GOD is taking good care of him and he feels a lot better now. I have cried for three days thinking about what I do have and how blessed I am that out of 3 small children only one was sick. We made it though and you guys will too! My 3 children are at grandpa & grandma's for the weekend--but right now I wish more than ever they were here with me so I could hug them and tell them how much I love them! My heart goes out to you--and you will be in my prayers tonight! I wish I had the words to tell you....to ease your loss! But as long as he is remembered--he lives inside each one of us! He is a beautiful little angel! My heart has been touched forever!

God Bless all of you! JD Paige

Charlie was one of God's precious little angels sent to you and your family to love and adore for just a season. And I admire you for the strength that you seem to have in just the few years that it has been. It has been 16 years since my baby "Trey" went to heaven and after reading all that you've wrote I might just now be at that stage and it has been 16 years. God bless you and your family.

I just read Charlie's story for the first time. I couldn't get through it without crying. As a mother myself, I just stopped and thanked God for my two beutiful girls. Your story is a true inspiration. My sister-n-law has leukemia and has a site on Caring Bridge as well. She was first diagnosed in March of 2006. Her first round of Chemo placed her in remission for about 7 months. To our dismay, it came back in full force May 08, 2007. To date, she is not in remission. They will be performing another Bone Marrow Byopsy on Monday. Please place her in your thoughts and prayers. I will be doing the same for you and your family. Sincerely, Angela

Although it has been several years since God called Charlie to be with him,I am sure the pain still feels like it was yesterday. There will always be the memories of the beautiful smiles, laughs, and joys that Charlie brought to you everyday. My son Jacob died March 5th of 2001. He was almost 2. Our stories may not be the same but we share the same horrible ending. You are a very strong woman and have a very strong family. Thank you for sharing Charlie's story. I will continue to pray for your wonderful family. The Bible promises we will be together someday. Know that there are alot of people thinking of you and wishing you well.

God has given your family so much strength through your incredible loss. Charlie is just beautiful and I'm sure there are many, many wings holding him as I type this entry. What a brave family you are. My sympothy and love to you all. I guess you all know what it means to "live each day like it were your last." I mention that because I just had a niece with a heart transplant and she was a very sick little girl - she was "riding the fence" as the doctor put it. One very special and unselfish family Kept our little Tessa alive while just losing a very special little angel in their life. What a strong and special family you are. Gods Blessings to you ALL!

Dear Kathy and family:

I sat last night and read through Charlie's page and what a testament to God's love! I found it strange how I came upon little Charlie Bear's page. I had received an email of a baby that has undergone some surgeries that I know indirectly from family. I enjoy hearing her progress and think what a great system this caringbridge is for EVERYONE!
Then I came upon little Charlie's page. I admire your hope and faith and could feel the love of your family, friends and perfect strangers like me. I also felt compelled to email as we lost our nephew on July 30, 2001 and he was from Beresford, SD (as I saw you have family as well from, small world.) He passed away of a degenerative disease called Canavan's Leukodystrophy. At his funeral I found out I was pregnant with our first child, what an amazing circle of life. Of course our littel guy received Samuel (his name) as his middle name. We now have 3 beautiful children and thank you for your strength as it has changed me as well. I also love your recent notes to Charlie in the guest book, Charlie was a big life in such a little body!

We visit a cabin in MN as well, the Alexandria/Glenwood area during the summer to get out of the heat in AZ. We love to get up there and spend time with extended family, as there is no place like it!

Our love to you and all of your beautiful family!

I was just looking at my sister's (eraleehilton) website & decided to go to other ones. This one really stood out. A baby was born on April 29, 2007 that may be my grandson. We are going to get Paternity test done. In the meantime, I have looked at that healthy child as a possible grandson & very easily could love him with all of the love a grandmother is supposed to. Now, your loss has made me realize, it does not matter if someone is related, you can still love that child, regardless because I do...I will be thinking of you & praying that God's love is with you always.....

I can imagine Charlie standing close by you each day watching over each one of you, making sure you take the right path. Just know that each time you dream about him he is communicating with you. I believe this with all my heart. Dreams are the doorway between those gone before us and now. This I know from experience. Keep your hearts and minds open always and you will feel your loved one nearby. Draw upon this for your strength. You have touched so many lives little Charlie. Thank You family for sharing your story. It is touching how you have shared your life and sorrows with us all. May you find joy and peace each day of your life.

Dear Cowans - I read Charlies story about 2 months ago. I felt a very strong connection to you kathy and charlie. My friend had started a caringbridge page for her daughter who has ewings sarcoma. She had a stem cell transplant from her brother and is doing really well now. Unfortunately, during this time my friend developed breast cancer and within 1.5 years passed away (june 30, 2006). She has been my friend since the seventh grade (many, many years!) and reading her journal over and over comforts me.

That is how i got to Charlies site. Of course I wept throughout. Your writing was so poetic and full of emotions - i felt i was there. And I kept coming back to Charlie's spot and looking at this pictures. The one of the whole family is incredible.

I decided to read the guestbook entries after another while and think part of the reason for my "connected" feelings are 1. charlie was born on my nephews birthday (granted, not the same year) 2. your birthday is the same as my fathers 3. my sisters name is Abbe and 4. my friends name is kathy.

I hope you wont mind if charlie bear is my star and angel too. I never really believed in angels before this but i now know they exist. he is so sweet. and thank you for sharing him.

I know you miss Charlie and his wonderful smile and expressive eyes but I feel better knowing Little Mia has such a good-looking young man to watch over her in Heaven! May God bless you and your precious family and you will always be in my prayers!

May God keep peace in your heart and give you HIS strength to smile with memories. I am a flight paramedic doing critical care transport of sick and injured people. I was blessed by your story, your courage and your faith. God knows what we can handle and helps us in our times of need. Kathy you and your family have been so blessed. Charlie Angel was a gift from God for you take care of him and love him even if only for a short time. I lost my son last year. He had Muscular Dystrophy and wasn't suppose to live to 20 years old. But we had him 39 years. We always had the thought in the back of our minds, we encouraged him and strengthened him and he became his own person. Although for many years he could hardly walk, then he went to crutches then to the wheelchair. Not many people could understand him because his vocal cords were paralized. But he had a big heart and loved children. We hsve a 21 month old boy named Jordan (in our church) that has meningitis and we are all praying for him, he has been in a coma for some time now. There was approx 4 childen brought into the hospital in one week with meningitis. All children are Angels. I didn't mean to ramble but your story was so touching and I do know the feelings that go along with the joy. God will bring you out of the darkness into the light, and you will see his goodness. Micah 7:9 God bless

I stumbled across Charlie's story and cannot believe how moving it was! tears are still streaming down my face. Your family and Charlie will remain in my prayers forever more and I can only imagine what you went through.

I, too, stumbled across Charlie's website. I don't know what to say other than I am exceptionally moved by Charlie and your whole family. I've just finished reading the entirety of your journal entries for Charlie --beginning to end. As I read this I still have tears streaming down my face. I have an 11 year old son, a 3 year old daughter and am 7 months pregnant. I do cherish my children and show/tell them how much I love them daily (to the point I probably annoy them) but I will hug them just a bit tighter and longer from now on. I'm so sorry for your loss but so grateful for the gift of Charlie to our world and, sadly grateful for the angel he has become. I will continue to think of and pray for your family and Charlie. I have the utmost admiration for you and your family. You've lived what we as parents dread, and come out shining.

Dear Cowan Family, What a beautiful angel you have. I'm deeply saddened for your loss. I came across your journal when I was checking updates on my dear friend. Her 13 mon old daughter just had a brain tumor removed and have found out that it is cancerous. Please pray for her and her family. I wanted to share with you how I have created the same "balloon" traditions. My parents passed away together on 3/28/2006. I sometimes have a hard time comming to terms that I am an orphan at age 33. I have 2 young beautiful daughters (age 5 & 16 months)that keep me going every day(not to mention my wonderful husband). This past Sunday was my moms b-day so I took my girls to pick out balloons. Tears filled my eyes as we stood in our backyard and my 5 yr old belted out as loud as she could(so grandma would hear her!!) the happy b-day song then we kissed each balloon(a bazillion times!)before we sent them up in the sky to Grandma in heaven. I'm sure Grandma Rosie has taken Charlie under her wings and will keep an eye on him till ya'll meet again. Thanks for the inspiration and knowing that time will heel all. I chose a special song to play at the funeral--you should listen to it sometime. It is by a Christian singer named Chris Rice called "Untitled Hymn/Come to Jesus" my daughter loves to sing it all the time for Grandma. God bless your family and I'll look for the bright Charlie star.

Hello to Charlie's family!
I don't know too what drew me to read your journal entries and look into your story...but after finishing them all, I believe, as you do too, that is Charlie's star that had shine and showed me the way to your journal. He was leading me to meet you and hear about him, his and your love for him.
I honestly could not stop crying all the way while reading your recordings. As a mom of a two year old boy diagnosed before birth with a rare genetic disorder, Trisomy 18-mosaic, my heart goes to you and your family. Your are a great inspartaion for me and an encoragment I need. Thank you for sharing your story and your feelings, thank you for meeting me with Charlie. I didn't know Charlie but his story on Caringbridge touched my heart since my 2yr old nephew just left PICU at Childrens in St. Louis. He was on life support for over two weeks and we've just heard that he indured brain damage through his medical ordeal, not to mention his rare genetic disorder. It's heart braking!!! I pray that your family continues to remember and cherish the days you spent with Charlie and that your story continues to encourage others. I don't know what will happen with my nephew or how long we'll have him. I did learn that no matter the outcome, we will have him forever. Thank you.

I just learned of this website about a month ago, when my 12 year old niece was diagnosed with ALL (leukemia). She lives in Austin, Texas, and I'm in Memphis, TN. I've been able to keep up with her ups and downs through this website.

I just took the opportunity to look through other stories, and yours stole my heart. Thank you for sharing your story. It truly means a lot to me, as well as to others.

You have so much love and such strong faith. I know Charlie is your angel, and while I can't say why he had to suffer in this material world, or you did, I know he is happy and free and in a better place, and that your immense love for him has made a huge difference in this world. Love is all that matters, and we are all here for a relatively short time, and I thank you for the great love you have shown to Charlie and to others. Be strong and know how important your love is ... and how much Charlie loved you.

May God bless you and your family. What strength Charlie and your family and friends showed. Charlie has his pair of wings now and is watching over you. Thank you for your story. A young 16 year old girl from my community was in a serious car accident along with 3 other youngsters that lost their lives, slightly over 1 week ago. A caringbridge site was made for the survivor to keep us all updated. That is how I learned over your site. So, from El Paso, Illinois, your family is in my thoughts and prayers as well. Keep the strength.

Sorry to read about your loss, of your beautiful angel Charlie. I lost my nephew at two days old, He died on Valentine's Day 2004.It does seem like yesterday as the pain returns and is so vivid. But we are thankful to God as you are to have had the time we did with our little Gabriel. Hopefully the two boys are having a great time in heaven and not being too rowdy! God Bless

I hope God blesses you with the little miricle of children to come. It is very hard to lose someone you created, you are a part of. I ran across your site as I was looking thru the caringbridge site. A good friend of mine, her 15 year old daughter was just diagnosed last thursday with Cronic Leukemia. I read your whole Journal entry through tears streaming down my face, you were truelly blessed with a wonderful beautiful Little Angel who will always be looking down on you & your family. God & Heaven are so lucky to have such a wonderful Angel with them now. Just remember you will see your Little Charlie Bear again one day. Everytime I look into the sky at night & gaze at the stars I will always look at the little dipper and know that Your Little Charlie Bear will always be looking back. May God be with you & your family always. God Bless!!!!

My prayers go out to you and your brave family. What you have written about your beautiful baby and the 6 glorious months and 6 wonderful days you had with him is a wonderful celebration of his life. I am sure he is 'contacting' you and always nearby. Know now that he is healed and very happy, and your love carries him on.
I happened to find your journal entry while reviewing journal writings of dear friends whose 27 month old son had surgery this morning for bilateral kidney tumors (after weeks of required chemo).
At this time I don't know the outcome of the surgery and prognosis as it has not been posted yet....
Please say prayers for Noah Meyer....you are wonderful courageous people.

Cowan Family,
I find myself coming back so often to look at those beautiful eyes of Charlie Bear. I think of him often when our children speak of there angels in heaven watching down on them. Your family has a special angel watching over you and you can see that through the signs that he has sent. As I have mentioned before your family is an inspiration to others and I remeber to cherious each moment with our three children each and every day, not knowing what is to come the next. Continue to think of your family often and little Charlie Bear!!!! Take Care.

I have 3 other kids that help, but I'll never forget my infant son. I went through 9 hours of labor and then he wasn't alive. His heart had stopped and there was nothing we could do. Hi Kathy,Family and Angel Charlie:

We just read Charlie's story and looked at his pictures. He is a really cute little boy. It is sad how we both as mothers are griefing with the passing of our precious babies. Our daughter Nicoletta was 6 1/2 months when she passed away. She had Type 1 and she passed away November 28, 2005. It has only been a little over a year, but each day is hard because our other 3 kids ask about Nicoletta everyday. They are 7, 4 and 3 and they really don't understand why she isn't coming back. Our daughter's website is www.our-sma-angels.com/nicoletta. I hope to talk to you again soon. Love Always, The Genna Family.

Hi Charlie,

We're thinking of you and your family as your angel day approaches. I didn't know your mom and dad 5 years ago, but I know that these days were filled with pure sadness as they tried to prepare a goodbye to you.

I'm so thankful that you (along with Marshall) have connected your mom with me. She was one of the very first SMA parents I ever spoke to and I will never forget the caring and understanding in her voice; the constant support over emails and cards, as we prepared to bid our Marshall goodbye and allowed him to join you in the spiritual world.

And to this day, we continue to get emails from people who found us through YOUR site. You continue to do your special work, Charlie Bear! You are always loved and never forgotten.

Love,

Hi I appreciate all your entries. I am now at the beginning of my road with my son Andrew. He is 15 months old and has trisomy 21, and is also being diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, along with possible other disorder. the last 15 months have been in and out of just about every specialists office and hospital stays just about every other week in the beginning and now we were able to go 3 months before another 2 weeks in the hospital. Andrew is a hard case. He does not have the normal syptoms and test results for diagnosis of anything specific but has a little of concern in a lot of different areas. I just thought I would write, this is all so new to us still, we have had so many illnesses and surgeries with him that it is very overwhelming and I feel angry. We love our baby drew so very much, it is so hard to see him in pain. Thanks for your website access. Love Beej

This is my first time on Caringbridge. My sister just made a page for my 17 month old nephew Bryce Vidales. He has been diagnosed with a terminal condition called Otahara Syndrome. Thank you so much for allowing me to visit Charlie's page. It was very touching. I am so glad my sister found a website like caringbridge. Your son is a beautiful boy. What a loving family you are.....

This is my first time on this site and Charlie's story is the first I have read. I sit here in tears, feeling sorry for myself over having to share joint-custody of my youngest daughter (6) with her father. NO MORE. I will NEVER know the pain you have/you are feeling for the loss of your son, but I can empathize. You have taught me in a few loving ords of your son to stop being selfish and be grateful that I still have my daughter and the ability to see her and hold her whenever I choose. Afterall, she is his daughter too. thank you for your story. In another way, this has helped me to come to a decision of my engagement. I have had doubts about accepting the proposal, because (my now fiance') lost his daughter at the age of 7 weeks, I was always afraid to ask questions out of fear of saying something wrong, but I feel (that from reading your words) that he would probably feel more comfortable talking about his daughter Haley Kaye..I give you and yours the credit for taht as well.. God Bless, Jennifer Whalen and Daughters (Emily and Carley)

Hi Charlie Bear! Your cousin Katie is visiting, and she is your age. Your aunt and I were expecting you both at the same time, which made it very difficult when you went to heaven. Having Katie here is like a breath of fresh air, kind of. We keep saying "what if Charlie were still here, would he be asking all these questions and trying to write his name?" It has taken us almost 5 years to spend one-on-one time with her, but I'm glad I didn't do it sooner. We were really able to enjoy her now. Your sisters are great with her, as I know they would be with you. You are always in our hearts, and we think about you every second, of every minute, of every day! Love you infinity baby boy!

Thank you for sharing Charlie with those of us that visit Caring Bridge. I have read many stories filled with love, strength and courage and each time I marvel at how you have the ability to cope, and each time it strikes me again, God lives in your hearts and you have chosen to shine that light and share it with others. YOU are a blessing. May God continue to give you peace and cherished memories of your beautiful boy, Angel Charlie.

I lost a cousin a few years ago. She left behind 3 boys who she loved more than life. I am sure Charlie is in heaven with a VERY SPECIAL ANGEL NAMED BERNICE looking after him. She loved children so much and I know thats why god called her home at a young age to be with all the little angels in heaven. GOD BLESS YOU ALL . BRENDA
