The Amazing Abe: new website address www.caringbridge.org/visit/abefagerstrom2

Twins Game May 9, 2009
---------------------------

Abe was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 13th, 2003 about a month before his 3rd birthday.  This type of leukemia is treated for 3 years with chemotherapy.  Abe completed his treatment on January 12, 2007.

Unfortunately, Abe relapsed in his bone marrow in August of 2007 just 6 months after finishing treatment.  He was treated at Children's Hospitals & Clinics of Minneapolis on relapse protocol AALL0433. Abe finished 2 1/2 more years of chemo in Dec. 2009.

August 2010 Sadly, Abe has relapsed again just 7 months off treatment. He is currently undergoing chemo at Children's to be followed by a bone marrow transplant at the U of M.

Abe is 9 years old. He's a happy little guy who likes to hang out with his brothers Isaac, 13 & Ben, 8. He loves the MN Twins, playing sports & spending time with his family & friends.  He rarely complains & is the sweetest, bravest little boy you'll ever meet.

Thanks for taking the time to check in on Abe's progress, we appreciate your support!

Courage doesn't always roar.  Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, I'll try again tomorrow

See you there!

Thursday, Sept.9, 2010

Things have been going pretty well for Abe these days. We've had many ups & downs over the past couple of weeks, but I guess we've kind of settled into our new routine of things we need to do each day. I think that Abe is getting used to hanging out on the 8th floor again. It helps that we've been able to leave on pass for 2-3 hours almost every afternoon to go to Auntie Linda's house. He really looks forward to that each day.

Abe's counts are still really low & he's been getting transfusions of blood & platelets often. His ANC is still zero. Hopefully he can stay healthy during this time when he has no infection fighters. Abe will have a bone marrow biopsy in the morning - we need to have some great results so we know that the chemo is working. Positive thoughts & prayers would be appreciated as we wait for those results. Thanks!

Our meeting at the U of M last week went well. We got a lot of info about the whole process, including a tour of the transplant unit. We also met one of the Dr's who will care for Abe when we get there later this fall. Not a lot of specific details yet, but I'll update as I know more.

Now for some non-medical news. Mr. #1 Twins Fan Abe has had a pretty exciting week. He's had not one, but TWO visits from Bert Blylevin this week! He also gave Abe & a few other kids from Children's a shout out during Tuesday night's game. Abe has faithfully brought his 'Circle Me Bert' sign to every Twins game he's gone to. Well, I think this definitely beats being circled :o)
I can't even begin to tell you how much those visits helped to lift Abe's spirits, it had been a rough week. Thank you Bert!!! I'll post pics as soon as I change to our new CB site.

I also would like to add that there's a benefit being held for Abe & our family this weekend. It's on Sat, Sept 11th from 2-7 at the Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center. The address is 100 Federal Drive, St. Paul, MN. My aunt Linda has included more info about this in the guestbook if anyone is interested. They've been working very hard to plan this event & we really appreciate it! Sounds like there will be lots of fun family activities, etc. I'm hoping to be there for part of the time with Isaac & Ben & am looking forward to seeing everyone.

Well, Abe is all tucked in & I should sleep while I have the chance. Thanks so much for checking in on Abe & for leaving messages in the guestbook. It really helps to know you're out there thinking of us.

Kelly
