Hello to All...
Just wanted you to know that I was thinking of you today and that cute little smile of Luke's. It is hard to believe that this year will be their five year anniversaries. These guys have come a long way and will continue to pave the road for others. Keep up the good work Luke. Natalie, it was a nice update. How are you and Nick? Growing up so fast I am sure. Hugs and Kisses from Oklahoma.

It was so good to hear Luke is doing well. We pray for him daily. In fact, while viewing a promotional video the Ronald McDonald House did while the Awrey's were in Minneapolis with our Angel Morgan, my granddaughter, Alyssa - kept saying "that's Luke..that's Luke." We thought it was so cute and glad to hear our prayers are being answered. Blessings to all of you.

We miss you and hope Luke gets over the RSV soon...it was not fun for Riley prior to transplant. Hang in there, like you alwasy seem to do. Give all hugs and kisses from Riley and Sydney. Sorry to hear you are in the hospital but I'm glad you won't be there long! It's amazing how quickly kids learn! I wish that they never had to learn how to give IV's or take temps or test BP's but that's transplant life isn't it?
I will continue to pray for your family. And I hope you have a good Thanksgiving!!

Luke, what are you doing in there again?! Are you giving your mommy and daddy a hard time. You get out of there for the holidays. Pulmicort---good stuff. It serves us well. We are still on it with nary a problem. I really don't know if that means it works or we just don't need it. But I hope it serves you well. Take it easy and make them wait on you hand and foot. I had originally planned to visit as many caringbridge sites as possible, and leave some encouraging words, prior to my daughters passing. Unfortunately her passing came sooner than we had expected, but longer than any of her doctors expected.

Another angel takes flight.

My daughter Pam had a brain tumor and was fighting the fight since November 4th, 2002, after the birth of her daughter (Casey Morgan). My youngest daughter, Karen, set up a caringbridge website for Pam. Karen's friends mother shared a prayer with us, that I would like to share with you and Luke. It's called DON'T QUIT:
Don't Quit -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but do not quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup. And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.(Just call on Jesus).

I would also like to share a saying that was on the card my wife Diane picked out, and we bought for Pam:

If you were a star
That wasn’t expected back
In the universe
For a thousand years,
I’d wait.

If you were the sky
And everyone went inside
When you got sad
And started to rain,
I’d stay.

And if you were a peach
And the world decided to get rid of all peaches,
I’d pick you up,
Put you in my pocket…

AND KEEP YOU…. FOREVER..

Prayers have scientifically been proven to work.

REMEMBER NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT. You are in our prayers. GOD bless you all.

To hear that he is going to preschool on the big yellow bus is an amazing feat for him! (Tell him not to let Presley know, as she would be sooo jealous!) I continue to wish the best for you all, and will definitely say an extra prayer for the engraftment and enzyme level tests. Oh man, YES...anthesiology should be a bit more knowledgeable about Hurler airways there at Fairview! Yikes, I was not happy to read about Luke's little side trip from the OR to the unit, but I suppose as long as he is recovering and he has supplied us with great news on his enzyme and intelligence, I guess I'll ease off about being too annoyed with anesthesiology! I hope your trip home won't be too much more delayed. Give him a huge hug for me!

Hi Sheila and Luke!
I am sorry there were problems (who ever said that doctors know EVERYTHING???) but glad that it seems to be only a minor setback in your trip. I think it's wonderful news about Luke's enzyme level and IQ scores. What a blessing he truly is! My prayers are with your family always, and I hope you have a safe and quick trip back hom in a couple of days.

I'm sorry I have not contacted you yet but thank you for your phone number! I was just checking in to see if you had posted anything new since the last time I was here. When I opened the photo page this time I got a chill when I saw Luke. He looks so much like my Cameron that I was caught off guard for a split-second!

Things still seem to be going well for you right now... I am anxious for June to come and go to hear all the details about Luke's visit back to MN. I feel sure that all the news will be positive and will give you a sense of accomplishment. Your family will remain in my daily prayers, along with all my Hurler friends around the world!

Hello Sheila and Luke: I'm so glad to hear Luke is doing well. Life off of the CSA is great, and you won't believe your freedom when the line comes out! We are approaching our year anniversary as well, and I will sigh a big sigh of relief. I don't know why, but it seems like a big milestone to me. We are still working on Sarah's speech, and are looking into her spine surgery, but otherwise are doing well. Take care!

I am another Hurler mom in Alabama and I was thrilled to see the latest about Luke. Growing donor cells and showing the enzyme is the stuff that makes the whole transplant process worthwhile. I pray every night that God watches over all the Hurler babies and Hurler angels, like my son Cameron. He was transplanted in August 2001 in Ft. Worth, TX, quite a ways from home. The pictures of Luke look almost just like my son! They share quite a resemblance, that is for sure. I want to offer my prayers and support for your family, and let you know that I would love to hear from you any time you feel like contacting me.

Hello Sheila! It has been a long time since I have posted, but I have been keeping track of Luke and including him in our prayers. Let's hope those donor cells can hang in there. There is a boy here in Ontario who is about 6 or 7 years old, who has been hanging around at 50% engraftment for years and is doing just great. He is even playing hockey, much to his dad's delight. Hang in there and keep the faith. These Hurler kids are strong, and deserve a break.

It's wonderful to hear that Luke is making such progress in his development. Hello, my name is Laura and I came across Luke's page on a web page to "adopt" a kid. I am 21 years old and live in Asheville, NC. I had a friend at Duke Hospital Feb 2,2002-Oct. 19,2002. She had luekimia and had a bone marrow transplant in June. Sadly, she did not survive. Her heart became to weak due to the chemo. I have feel in love with some many children that she had became friends with. I was excited when I am came across this web page. I am currently in nursing school and I want to specialize in oncology when I am done. That is where my heart is. I have added Luke and your family to my prayer list. I fully believe in the power of prayer. The Lord can do awesome things. I will check on Luke daily. Talk to you soon.

Luke, we dont know each other, but my friend Amie & I are trying to raise awareness and generate more support and prayers for more kids' sites. If you havent already, soon you will be getting guestbook messages from someone who has "adopted" you and your site (that is, if you want to participate). I think that long ago children made a law requiring them to only get sick between the hours of midnight and 6 am!

I'm glad Luke's cultures came back negative, I understand what you said about the number of xrays, scans and tests that our children have had to go through in their first years. But that will hopefully seem insignificant compared to what they will acomplish in their futures! Futures that they wouldn't have otherwise!

Hi family - So happy to get the latest update. Wish we could see Luke praying at meals-what a great little guy. It's so great that his levels are staying good. We know you were anxious to get therapy started again. Hope it goes well and will continue to help him remain strong. We know you will be anxious to get back into your own home. How are Nick and Natalie doing now that they are in their own school and back with friends? We're sure they enjoying that. Our friends at church were thrilled to hear Luke is home and continuing to do well. He continues to be remembered by them. Take care and our love to each of you. U. Max & A. Suzie

Hi guys, Glad to hear that Luke is doing so well. We are fine here. We really miss Adam, but know he is in a much better place than we ever could have provided here on earth for him. We will see him again someday. The holidays are coming and we know that we will have a hard time but Austin is only 9 and we have to be strong for him. He deserves to have a happy childhood. Do you have a website for Alex. I feel so bad I know what his family is going through. Also do you know how Morgan is doing and does she have a web site: Keep in contact. I read your updates, it sounds like he is so funny. I love the thing about praying at dinner, Me and Al got a good laugh out of that. Ruth

Your little Luke is sooo precious! He looks nearly the same size as ours! My Luke is 2. Thank you for signing our guestbook too- it is soooooooo unfortunate that we have to meet each other under these circumstances! If you need anything, an ear to bend or someone to cry to (or with) please email me= I AM THERE and I know what you are going through in this fight to save our son's lives. It is awful, horrible and a true nightmare. But God also gave us beautiful children and loving people to help us stay strong. Please contact me for ANYTHING! We only live down below you in Ohio! Maybe we could rendevous up in Toledo sometime! Blessings!

Sheila you have every right to brag! That is phenomenal how Luke is such a trooper about taking all those yucky meds! I used to have a terrible time just trying to get my daughter to take amoxicillin when she was little. We tried hiding it in just about everything, and it never failed...all she had to do was get a whif of it and she was gagging before it even hit her lips!
Good job, Luke! That's one less stress for your parents!

Dear de Volder family: It has been a while since we have corresponded, but I am very glad to hear that you are all home. I know Sarah just blossomed when she got home, and started getting better at a quicker rate. I am also glad to hear you are holding steady at 50/50 - heck, us parents are only working at 50% normal enzyme level, and look at us (a little exhausted and strung out, but otherwise healthy!). very good reason. "

His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. God is in charge, and indeed has a very good reason for the delay.

You are Eric are being used in a mighty way to bless many people. Rest in the knowledge that Jesus is Lord.

Looking forward to seeing you and the kids!

Hi, Nick and Happy Birthday. You probably won't see this until your big day is over because I just learned that today is your birthday. We have never met. I'm your grandpa Tom's stepbrother and live in Jackson MI. Maybe when you all get back to Michigan we can get together. I'm so glad you were able to donate for Luke. That's what big brothers are for! I don't know your Mom either but have been reading all of her E-mail letters and am so happy to hear that Luke is progressing. Keep up the good work, keep the girls (your Mom and sister) happy. What a joy it is to catch up with your journal entries! God is good, indeed. CPR hits the road this Friday at 5 a.m to travel to PA and NY, and our practice schedule has been intense to say the least! This is the first time I've been home before dark in longer than I can remember, so while I pray for you and Luke; my time to be on the computer has been more limited than I realized.

Enjoy your time with Eric and the kids; and with the kids after he comes back home. We miss you and Luke and can't wait until you're both back home.

Hi Sheila,

Indeed, God is so good! It is such a joy to hear how well Luke is doing. We had a wonderful cell group meeting Tuesday night, it was so good to see Eric and the kids.

We are getting ready for the CPR road show, and are practicing 3 or 4 times a week. We do a dinner theatre presentation Sunday, then have to learn the second show between now and when we leave on August 8 or 9, so it's pretty hectic.

I'm so anxious to see what God is going to accomplish through the transplant and protocol - how exciting to stand back and watch Him at work!

Hugs to you and Luke,

bonnie

Sheila,
It is encouraging to hear that Luke is engrafted at 50%. We will now pray that either it stays or increases with Nick's cells. The important number will be that enzyme and I am praying really hard that he now has some! Thanks for letting us know how he is doing.

Sheila,
The first day your family is gone is always the hardest, but it will get easier. You and Luke will soon get into a routine, especially with him having therapies. Then when your family gets back, you will probably get frustrated when they interupt your routine!!! Believe it or not, a month will pass and they will be back. We will get you out and do something. Just take care of yourself so you can take care of Luke. Grow Cells Grow!!! Sheila,
Sometimes it's so hard to be a mom isn't it? From one mom to another I know you will find more strength and courage than you could ever imagine. Goodbyes are always the pits, but the kids will get into their own routines and so will you with Luke. Hopefully the month will go by faster than you and they will be back for a visit before you know it. In the meantime, we will help to lessen your loneliness with our emails, greetings, and phone calls. Just keep picturing next summer at home with the whole family and this whole transplant business behind you! Now doesn't that bring a smile to your face?! :)
My prayers are with Luke every day for a successful transplant and a great enzyme level!! I have faith!

Yeah!!! It is finally here. I said an extra little prayer for Nick and Luke today that all would go well. I saw Nick in the hall walking around and said he was doing okay. Luke was on the mat playing with dad and looked great. Now the waiting begins, but be patient and don't forget that I am only a few doors down or a phone call away.

Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to let you know I am checking on our little guy and will certainly keep everyone here up on his progress. He's won a lot of hearts already - as you all have. Want you to know that I (and my family) are keeping each of you in our prayers - and especially little Luke. He is a terrific little guy with a strong spirit - with that and your faith and a great medical facility....! Please give Luke a hug for me. I am keeping the garage door down and the chickens in the barn until he returns! God bless you.

P.S. Glad he likes the therapist!
Also am touched by your wonderful caring for each and every one of the children and families there. You are truly an amazing family.

I am so glad you guys are finally here in the unit. Try not to worry too much, just one day at a time and thank God for each and every day. Luke is so sweet and so is Nick and Natalie. God will see you through this journey. Rick and I believe there is a time for everything. Our delays for transplant was in the hands of God as he was preparing the right Hurler families to be together during this time. Although I wish you would have been able to be here to meet and spend time with the families of Alexis, Andrea, Soumner, CJ, Elliot and Carley. I have learned that Hurler families stick together for everything and will do anything to help each other out. I am here if you need anything. Enjoy your time with you family and preparing for the big day!!!

Praise God for how well everything is going. Joan and I were talking during our walk this morning about how good God has been through all of this - that radiation won't be necessary, that you won't be 6 months in isolation, for how the Church and community has grown together.

My boss has a daughter, Sarah, who had to have a bone marrow transplant last November. They were hoping to have her home by Christmas - she was home for THANKSGIVING DINNER!!!

Looking forward to having all of you back home soon.

Sheila, Eric, the coverage in the papers has been wonderful. You all are in our prayers. This is very nice to be able to keep up with Luke's progress. Eight years ago I went through a liver transplant so I relate a little to your transplant experience. You have a darling family. We know God will watch over you as he did me. Love, Joyce and L.J.

Eric, Sheila and Children~~
It was good talking with you yesterday, Sheila. Remember what I said about hope. Children are like rubber balls ~~
they bounce back, over and over.
I will be watching Luke's progress closely. Now knowing someone who has the same disease as Mindy and who has the
opportunity for treatment makes you all very dear to my heart.
Please call or email me whenever you like. I remember the
l-o-n-g days Mindy and I spent in New York.
God is with you always.

"He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation." taken from Psalm 91.
I work with Ruth Dunn, and I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this critical time. I know how hard it is to have a sick child, one of my relatives, Susie - 6 yrs, has Cystic Fibrosis, so we go from day-to-day. It is good to remember also that God holds their lives in His Hands. I pray that Luke lives a long and prosperous life. God bless you all,

Although we have never met, we share many common friends ... my daughter, Susannah, is another Hurler darling who went through BMT in Minnesota. She is now 18 months post transplant and doing well. In fact, we just celebrated her 3rd birthday yesterday! We wish you strength and send you prayers, as we know how very busy the coming months will be for you all. Rest assured, however, that your little Luke will be in wonderful hands, as you couldn't ask for a more dedicated and compassionate group of physicians and nurses! All my best, Amy White

Dear Luke and family,

Our family is praying for you. Keep focused on the Lord and He will give you the Grace and Strength to weather this storm. "It's not in trying but in trusting, it's not in running but in resting, it's not in wondering but in praying, that you find the strength of the Lord" - I love this song and hope it ministers to your heart also. ISA 41:13 says "For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee".

Precious Luke and Family, You are in our constant thoughts & prayers. Uncle Tony and I have been healed and touched over the past 16yrs through the power of prayer. Daily you are being covered. "But to you who fear My name the Sun of rightousness shall arise with healing in His wings. "Malachi 4:2. We have several families in our church who pray for you. When Grandpa & Grandma DeVolder were here for Easter Sunday, they had the opportunity to meet them. Thank you, Lord, that you suffered and died for us so that we might be healed. We lay claim to that heritage of healing which You have promised in Your Word and provided for those who believe.

Devolders,
You've made a lot of progress in a short time, and I know all the work involved in that; I also know it will be worth it to you! We wish you the best during bone marrow transplant in Minnesota. Our little Eddie will be 13 years post bmt on June 8, the year was 1989; and we celebrate it like we do Eddie's birthday-- giving thanks for his re-birth through bmt for he is now a healthy little guy and is 15 1/2 years old. I hope knowing that will help you keep the faith. Never give up hope. Keep a positive attitude--no matter what--to help Luke during his difficult times, and he will be just fine. God bless you and keep you all safe through your upcoming journey. We will be thinking of you constantly.
Love,
Jean, Al, and Eddie Ducham

Luke, I appreciate your uncle Tony providing me with the opportunity to pray for you and your family. I know what it is to face a serious health crisis as my wife recently faced cancer. I will be praying for you in the days to come, that the Lord will meet your every need! He knows exactly what you and your family need right now and in the days to come because none of this is a surprise to Him. I know the Lord is going to bless you and you family in ways you can't imagine.

Luke and Family....Happy Easter!! We just wanted to say hi and can't wait to meet you when you get here in Minneapolis. We wanted to meet you when you were here a few weeks ago, but we didn't seem to be in clinic at the same time. As you may know, Riley was diagnosed at a late age too, 25 months. Riley gets his cord blood transplant tomorrow here at Fairview. You are in our thoughts and prayers. See you soon.
