Steve Wright's Journey
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!!!
Journal
Wednesday, December 22, 2004 Dear all, Today we celebrate the one year anniversary of Steve’s death. It hardly seems possible that it has been 12 months since we said our final goodbyes to him. People often ask how the boys and I are doing and I’m not quite sure how to answer them. There’s not a day that goes by without us missing our husband and father dearly but we also have moved on with our lives, just as Steve asked us to do. He is with us every step of the way, guiding us in ways we don’t even realize. His love and spirit surround us always.
As this will be the last entry to this website, there are two messages that I want to send. The first is to all of you who have helped the boys and me in so many ways both during Steve’s illness and during the past year. You have been so wonderful – we truly cannot begin to tell you how grateful we are for your love, friendship and support. The following lyrics from the Natalie Merchant song Kind and Generous express best our gratitude:
You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving For your kindness I'm in debt to you For your selflessness, my admiration For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to thank you for it....
You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving For your kindness I'm in debt to you And I never could have come this far without you For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to thank you for it....
I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave with love and tenderness, I wanna thank you I want to thank you for your generosity, the love and the honesty that you gave me I want to thank you, show my gratitude, my love and my respect for you, I wanna thank you
Oh I want to thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you...
Finally, a special message from me to Steve. He was truly a one-of-a-kind human being and I feel so blessed and honored that he chose to spend his all-too-short life with me, and that we have two beautiful boys who will carry on his wonderful legacy. I heard the following song, You and I Both by Jason Mraz for the first time when I was pulling into Gate of Heaven Cemetery to visit Steve one day just before I went back to work last February. The next time was on that first day back at UMd, as I was pulling into the parking lot dreading the prospect of “getting on with my life”. Since that day, every time I hear it I immediately think of Steve and feel like it truly expresses my love for him and the relationship that we had. So to you Steve, I send these final words with my deepest love and affection:
Was it you who spoke the words that things would happen but not to me Oh things are gonna happen naturally And taking your advice I'm looking on the bright side And balancing the whole thing But often times those words get tangled up in lines And the bright lights turn to night Until the dawn it brings A little bird who'll sing about the magic that was you and me.
Cause you and I both loved What you and I spoke of What you and I spoke of Others only dream of the love that I love
See I'm all about them words Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words Hundreds of pages, pages, pages forward More words then I had ever heard and I feel so alive Now you and I, you and I Not so little you and I anymore And with this silence brings a moral story More importantly evolving is the glory of a boy. You and I both loved what you and I spoke of And others just read of and if you could see now Well I'm already finally out words And it's okay if you have go away Just remember the telephone works both ways And if I never ever hear it ring If nothing else I'll think the bells inside Have finally found you someone else and that’s okay Cause I'll remember everything you sang
You and I both loved what you and I spoke of And others just read of and if you could see now Well I'm already finally out of words.
I miss you Steve - we all do - and always will.
Forever keeping the faith Julie
