Karina Hurtado

Hi, my name is Karina Hurtado, I am 9 years old. My birthday is September 4th. I am from Laurel, Maryland. At the age of 3, I was hospitalized January 22, 2003 after having a CT Scan and finding a large mass on the left side of my brain. I had surgery January 24th at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. and the doctor successfully removed all of the tumor but discovered it was cancerous. On January 30, 2003 I was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). This is a very rare and aggressive brain tumor and there is no protocol. So thanks to a friend of my daddy's, she helped us find a doctor named Dr. Gajjar at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee who has dealt with this type of tumor and now he is helping me fight it. I have been cancer-free for 5 years now. My mommy and daddy created this page to keep our family and friends updated on my brave battle.

Please remember to sign my guestbook.

Hello everyone!

I truly apologize for not updating since September!
Like they say, no news is good news. Everyone has been very busy. Jasmine (Karina's sister) started High School this year and was busy playing on the Varsity Soccer Team! Hooray Jasmine. Karina was busy with Cheerleading for the Boys and Girls Club and Girl Scouts and I started a new job in October. I finally got out of DC and found something closer to home, 15 minutes from home to be exact.
We will be heading back to St. Jude in July for Karina's 6 year check-up.
We participated in a St. Jude Radiothon on Valentine's Day and had a blast! Karina was hilarious on the radio! If you would like to see pictures there are some posted on the radion station's website at http://www.wpoc.com/main.html; click on day 2 in studio pictures and we are in there.
I hope all of you are doing well. May God continue to bless all of you. Thanks for checking in on us. I will try to post some new pictures soon.

Much Love,

The Hurtado Family
