Karina Hurtado
Hi, my name is Karina Hurtado, I am 9 years old. My birthday is September 4th. I am from Laurel, Maryland. At the age of 3, I was hospitalized January 22, 2003 after having a CT Scan and finding a large mass on the left side of my brain. I had surgery January 24th at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. and the doctor successfully removed all of the tumor but discovered it was cancerous. On January 30, 2003 I was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). This is a very rare and aggressive brain tumor and there is no protocol. So thanks to a friend of my daddy's, she helped us find a doctor named Dr. Gajjar at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee who has dealt with this type of tumor and now he is helping me fight it. I have been cancer-free for 5 years now. My mommy and daddy created this page to keep our family and friends updated on my brave battle. Journal Friday, September 5, 2008 8:32 AM CDT Hi everyone!
