Hey, did I read your note in our guestbook correctly? You guys are going to the Lighthouse retreat in September??? That is so awesome! We had a wonderful time and I just know you will, too. Here are a few tips:

If your girls like chasing crabs at night, take your own flashlights and nets. They supply lots of beach toys, but we needed those things specifically for evenings.

Don't overpack with too-many nice clothes like I did. We basically hung out in swimsuits and t-shirts the entire time. We went out to dinner once, but other than that, the whole week was casual!

Are you going to Grayton Beach? If not, where?

Are you driving or flying? If you drive, I wonder how close you will be to us????

Hey, Julia! Just wanted to say that I'm sorry the methotrexate is giving you such fits. My little girl threw her medicine back up on me today, too. Ironically, it was the zofran she threw up .... no where near as important as the stuff you are having trouble with. Hopefully both of you will get the hang of those gel caps!!!

I read your mom's last entry about the trouble you are having taking your MTX. That is so funny that Madie has the exact opposite problem! She just loves to take the MTX each week and would take more, if she could have them! She had been chewing them, but now she swallows them with water. But, I do still give her the Zofran 30 minutes beforehand (and sometimes the next few days, if she needs it).
Madie just loves the pictures of New York and your new baby! That is so wonderful that you got to go!

My son,Harris, told me that it was a lot easier to take his pills if he would drink milk first. The milk coats the throat and helps the pills go down. Harris would never, ever, ever take anything liquid. So, I would put everything in gel caps and this worked for us. He hated the taste of Protocel, however, I would just use a gel cap and it worked.
I was lucky that he started taking pills at the age of 3.
He also told me that "liquid" stuff was for babies and "big
kids" only took pills. Try the milk and maybe this will work.

Dear Lola and Julia -- I love the curls and am so impressed at how much Julia's hair has grown, even since we saw you in April! Today we went to clinic, and Kendrie marched in with her little quarter inch of blonde duckling fuzz, which she is so proud of, and the doctor said, "too bad the medicine we're giving her today is going to make the fuzz fall out again!" oops!! :)

Oh well, one of these days she'll have hair like Julia. Probably not curly (now that would be a HUGE surprise) but just having some will be nice again. She's tired of people calling her "little buddy" and "young fellow". I try telling her that if she would wear something besides a baseball cap people would realize she's a girl, but she just loves the caps! Ha!

I'm stopping by to catch up on the news and to pray for you. RachelJoy and I were in NY last winter and wanted to see Beauty and the Beast. There were many 3-6 year olds there. If MAW doesn't come up with a suitable arrangement, try calling the theater yourself. We stopped by the theater one day and were sold tickets at 1/2 price for the next afternoon's matinee. They were splendid seats. RachelJoy was given a beautiful charm bracelet as a gift from the theater managment. They couldn't have been nicer. It is well worth going to. We still talk about it!

How great to make counts! Now for the climb up from 50% chemo. I know this drives you crazy, Lola, but it really is just a part of maintenance therapy for some kids. And you know I speak from experience.

Summer is in the air along with all the cicadas! Clare is home for at least part of this week because of possible chicken pox in her class. I cannot wait for school to be over!

I know I posted yesterday, but I just read the notes about Julia having to go into the hospital!---I just *knew* there was something going on for your guys, I kept checking and then finally wrote a note!

I'm praying for good counts soon!!
Bunches of hugs and just hang in there!!
And if it helps, just remember that if it's a 'true' relapse (heaven forbid! we are not thinking that at all!) her platelets will be the first thing to start falling and not recovering.
Personally, I think it's the increase in the chemo a few weeks back because it takes about 10 days to get the full effect of the combination of them. Madie just can't tolerate a lot of the MTX, it puts her bone marrow to sleep!

Hey Julia and Lola, so sorry to hear about your stay in the hospital --- as if staying in the hospital weren't icky enough, to do it on Mother's Day and the one-year anniversary of dx, well, that just completely stinks.

The comment about one out of six dolls made me laugh. :)

I hope Julia's counts come back up to where they should be soon. I know she's been bouncing around for a while and you guys are more than ready to get them smooth and where they should be .... sooooooooon! Try to enjoy the last few hours of Mother's Day; eat some ice cream, lay around and watch tv in your pjs ....... wait, that's how you've spent the past three days, right? So never mind! But enjoy the day anyway.

I had originally planned to visit as many caringbridge sites as possible, and leave some encouraging words, prior to my daughters passing. Unfortunately her passing came sooner than we had expected, but longer than any of her doctors expected.

Another angel takes flight.

My daughter Pam had a brain tumor and was fighting the fight since November 4th, 2002, after the birth of her daughter (Casey Morgan). My youngest daughter, Karen, set up a caringbridge website for Pam. Karen's friends mother shared a prayer with us, that I would like to share with you and Julia. It's called DON'T QUIT:
Don't Quit -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but do not quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Wowie! Look at all that lovely hair Julia is growing. We are trying to grow hair over here. What Cherry would do for just an itsy bitsy little pony tail!! All we have is some thin, scraggly, scruffy, baby-like hair that we cannot get enough of to put in even a teensy-weensy pony tail.

About the food selection process, I have had that same conversation with a little girl on decadron. "I'm hungry, I want to eat something." "What?" "Something." "How about carrots?" "No." "Peanut butter?" "No." "Toast?" "No." "Well what do you want?" "Something." This goes on and on ad nauseum. Next time I'm going to simply make up a plate of crackers topped with peanut butter and smoked oysters, broccoli with ketchup, and mashed potatoes with grape jelly and say "Here's what you get when you won't tell me what you want. Now EAT IT!!!" She will no doubt throw it at me, but then I will still make her eat it. Decadron can be frustrating, HANG IN THERE!! Glad all is going well otherwise. Love,

Even though I stopped working with your Dad in October, I still think of you and your family often. I'm glad to hear that you are staying strong and happy.
I have an idea about breakfast. You could make a special restaurant menu before you go to bed (so you know what you are going to eat in the morning). Hello. My son Cole (10yrs old, 5th grade) has just been diagnosed with ALL t-cell (3/30/04). We have had our port placement and have begun our chemo. Hello Lola and Julia! I have been thinking about you, wondering how you are doing! I am Christian's Mimi (grandmother). My daughter Jaime and I met you in Christian's room the week you were diagnosed last May, just a week after Christian was diagnosed with ALL too. His Caringbridge page is the same as yours...just substitute his name. Jaime just started it, but as you will see, he has hair now too! He is on protocol 1961...he's in Maintenance and without his Broviac too. It fell out, but except for a couple of bad luck admissions right afterwards...and getting extra 'shots' as he calls them, overall it's been wonderful to NOT have it. He loves baths again! The week after steroids is awful, as I am sure you know....but he is doing great otherwise. It was so amazing reading your journal....Christian went through so much of the same. The worst was the horrible neuropathy the first couple of months when he could not move his legs at all. (Well, my daughter would probably say the worst has been the HATEFUL ER visits, which always seem to be on weekends or nights, when no one knows him, you wait forever, etc....and those HOSPITAL stays!) Anyway, I am so happy that Julia is doing so well! And your new highrise condo sounds absolutely fantastic! Take care! Diane

Hello. I was reading your journal because my 4 year old has ALL as well. He was diagnosed 6-23-02 and we continue treatment of course. A boys treatment is about a year longer even. It's amazing the differences in treatment reading through your history. My sister-in-law faught the same disease as a child and they say it's not hereditary, just bad luck. Please know that I know your joys and frustrations (like with the steroid when your child wears their emotions on their shirt sleeve)and will lift your family in prayer as we pray for continued health and research. Happy Birthday Julia!!! Six is a fun age and I bet you're going to be out on that fancy bicycle often. It seems to have all the "girlie" bells and whistles possible. I would have been crazy over it when I was six. I also give a vote that mommy immediately reminded me of Isabella Rossalini (think I spelled that wrong!). This weekend is the Purim holiday in Israel and everyone is dressing up in costumes like you do at Halloween. It's fun to see people walking around the city in their costumes. I hate to hear that your having headaches and tummy aches! My tummy aches surprise me too, usually right after the first two bites of food. My mom is great and has been giving me ginger ale and the calcium TUMS almost every night so that I don't take so much Zofran!

First time here and amazed by 2 things: how incredibly smart and sweet Julia is and about your choice for alternative medicine. This is fantastic - it is the 1st time I read that from an american mother at caringbridge. Homeopathy, accupuncture, herbs, aromatherapy, colortherapy, reiki, ect are soooooo common here in Brazil ... it can do wonders to help people. I know this treatment is VERY hard but from what I read in Julia´s journal, I am SURE she suffered much less than most of other children and recovered so fast many times from those horrible drugs because she is receiving those wonderful
treatments and supplements. She is surrounded not only by tons of LOVE and prayers but also by tons of REAL GOOD things that will protect and make her strong during that difficult journey.

I just watched the baby genius video called A trip to the San Diego Zoo my adopted nanny aunt pauline bought me it. I have been sick this week and wanted to have an adventure so I popped the dvd in my momma's dvd player and I felt like I was really at the zoo! Those giraffees have big tongues and the elephants have big noses called tusks. The zoo is so cool. I am going to lookup interactive online zoos to see if anything comes up. I hope to get more baby genius videos and toys because that is my favorite show! It is so cute and my favorite character is vinko the dancing bear and dj the dinosaur is cool too! I hope you are having a great day I love my nanny aunt pauline very much!

Hello Lola and Julia. I'm glad to hear interim maintenance #1 is going well for you. Maria is just starting week 5 of interim maintenance #2 and rolling right along. Her chemo schedual is a little different though with 3 IV chemos every 10 days and nothing oral (except benadryl and zofran). The first go-around she did have some problems with it, but now it's like her body is saying "oh this again.." I hope as time goes on, chemo will just keep getting easier and easier for Julia to handle (both physically and emotionally). You all have a great week!

Like you know, I was at Musical Theater Summer Camp for the last 3 weeks. We have classes in voice, tap, jazz, and acting. We have 3 different groups of kids.
Kids 8-9, 10-11, and my group 12-15 years old

My son has ALL also, he was randomized to the arm with 2 DI's. He will be done with his 3 yrs, 3 months of treatment this September already. When he was diagnosed I just wanted them to use everything they had to fight it, now I stop and think about the possible additional side effects of the additional chemos. While I dont agree wholeheartedly with the curse aspect of looking at it (I tend to feel its a combination of really bad luck / us polluting our water & air more that so many kids are getting cancer) I am glad to see you do run things by the oncologist. Not many people bother to, and dont know about the folic acid/mtx combination. I know what its like to be desperate and try to find out WHY, and do all you can for your child, but am glad to see you are not foregoing conventional treatment. Best wishes for her continued remission forever,

Please continue to struggle with those little bad guys in your blood, each pill or powder of your medication is like a little bomb against them and I bet they are screaming and trying to resist, but you and all your family and friends are much stronger than them, so the bad guys/cells will escape completely. I hope that all little creatures from our box from Houston are helping you as well, even if you think that they are simply sitting it their little boxes doing nothing, indeed each of them has some good power. Julia, I want to tell you that Dinara, the lady who wrote the other book (the one without pictures, with only picture of her and her kids on the front page) sent her greetings and wish you to feel much much better and recover soon. She was far away from here in some hospital herself going through severe treatment and wants to write a book about that. Who knows, may be later she will know you better and write a book about you and other little patients whom you met in your hospital, because you are a truly remarcable little girl and you are doing just great.

to increase red blood cell production and hemoglobin, hormone erythropoietin is used in patients with kidney problems. erythropoietin acts on bone marrow to increas producion of Red blood cells.
however, i do not know if this can be used in our case.
please check with hem/onc doc
i am sure you know of B12 and of folic acid in addition to iron supplements.

I just learned about Julia's illness and your web page. There is so much courage, resilience, and positive effort in your diary and it feels as though the anxiety of the first days is giving a way to confidence and "settling into routine".
It is wonderful that Julia responded to the body/mind treatment so well! If, on the other hand, you have any doubt about the diagnosis or at any other treatment stage, you can always have another pathologist to take a look at the blood tests. The Institute I work at is a renowned establishment for pathological analysis, and they do second opinion testing all the time. ALL is a very well studied disease, and it is resonably easy to diagnose, so, I wouldn't be easily swayed by the Philadelphia couple.On the subject of falling out hair, after my friend had the same experience with chemo, her husband and son shaved their heads as well so that she didn't feel too bad (I am not giving you any ideas, that's for Daniel!).

I constantly find myself staring at your web page and re-reading all the entries over and over again. And even though most of the time i have tears in my eyes they're mostly the tears of admiration of your courage and amazing positive attitude. This is the only way to deal with this terrible desease. I saw your site from the all-kids list. My daughter is Serena and she was dx on 10/11/02 at the age of 3.5. She is now 4. It is such a devastating blow to our lives when someone is dx with cancer and is SO much harder to bare when that someone is a child. It hurts and it's rough for everyone, but it does get easier. Induction IS the hardest phase. Serena get's the itchies too. The combination of Vincristine and Dexamethazone can cause it to be real bad. Serena takes Benedryl when they get too bad.
Julia is beautiful and strong and she will get through this!

I read about your web page from all-kids. My daughter's name is also Julia. She is 9 this year and was diagnosed with ALL last summer -July 23,2002. My Julia is on a high risk protocol in Boston. But we just started maintanance at the beginning of April and things are finally starting to get easier. The beginning of all of this is the hardest part. But it does get easier. Hang in there, take your medicine,and things will get easier.
Tell your mom that all-kids is a great place to be and she found a great group of people to help you all get through this tough time.

Hi. MY name is Chrissy and I saw your post on the ALL-KIDS site and thought id check out her site. Your daughter is adorable. My son was dx with ALL 4-6-01 and is also on CCG-1991. He is doing well. Im glad that you found the list. It really is a life saver. Im sorry that this has come into your lives. Life does get better. The beginning of this journey feels like your heart is being ripped out of your chest and you do nothing but think about what could happen. It does get easier. It really does. Life will get back to normal (a new normal). If you need to vent come to the ALL-KIDS. It is great.
