DIANNE'S STORY

Dianne was diagnose with Leukemia on May 1, 2003. As soon as she was diagnose with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) her treatments started. She was admitted to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. I had to make a tough choice to put her on the research program or not. After 2 months I had to make that choice and I chose to put her on the research program. She had started her new protocol and she is doing well on it. You find that the things that were once important to you is not so important any more. This will be her new treatment. She will get Methotrexate by vein at a higher dose and two delayed intensification phases. I have a positive attitude about her treatments.

All about Dianne

Dianne was born on July 10, 1997. She is our 5th child. She has 3 brothers and one sister. The day she was diagnosed forever changed our lives. It all started about a month before she was diagnosed. She was complaining about leg pains at night. I took her to the doctor and we were told it was growing pains. Well the pain continued. eventually she started to complain about her back. I took her to the doctors again and was told it was a kidney infection. She was put on antibiotics for ten days. The pains still did not go away. She began to cry one night that her neck was really hurting her. You could see that she was in a lot of pain. She said everything was hurting her. I was so upset and frustrated. I began to feel that something was really wrong. It was the Orthodox Holy Week and on Good Friday I called the doctor. She could not fit her in to see the doctor. I spoke with the doctor and she told me if Dianne was not running a fever that I should wait for the weekend to pass and see whatever she had would clear up. Holy Saturday night she did not want to go to church. We made her go, but all she did was cry and sleep. Easter Sunday she layed lifeless all day. My parents and I knew something was really wrong at this point. First thing Monday morning I called the doctor's office and had her seen. The doctor did an exam on her and noticed that her liver and spleen were swollen. She had so many bruises on her legs. She ordered a complete blood count. Wednesday afternoon she called me at work to tell me she wanted Dianne to go to Sinai and have her bone marrow checked. She still did not tell me what she found. I asked her over the phone if Dianne had leukemia and she answered yes. I fell apart. When my husband John saw me crying he knew Dianne had cancer. The doctor told me to wait for the final test at Sinai. There is a possibilty that it might come back negative, but we knew it wasn't. She was Diagnosed on May 1, 2003.
