Hi Melanie - I just read your latest update - so glad to hear all the medical reports are looking good. We will be thinking about you especially when AJ gets his feeding tube. I leave next week to help out in Kansas when Jack has his surgery. They are going to detach part of the flap they created in hopes that it will eliminate the sleep apnea problems. My daughter's baby is due this week, but the doctor thinks he will be late. Hope you are feeling well - I will try to talk to you soon. Love, Kathy and Bob Carlson

Hi Melanie,
Thanks for posting AJ's web address again. I had lost his and have wanted to check on his progress since his heart surgery. Sounds like he is getting back to himself. My heart goes out to you guys. Evan was only 14 months when he had his open heart repair so he did understand too much (just that it hurt :( Dealing with an older child during a major surgery must have been a bit harder to handle.
Happy New Year..God's blessings to all of you.

Hi Melanie,

I am praying for AJ. I know the speedbumbs are are rough, but hang in there. Dr. Hanley is a wonderful surgeron. Ashley developed a fever for several days after her 1st heart surgery. They had to keep her on the cooling blanket for most of her stay in the ICU. It is frusturating, but AJ will get through it. Just know you have support from others. I will put AJ on the prayer list at Taylor's school in the morning. Talk soon

Dear Melanie and Family,
You know you are in our prayers today as AJ gets knitted together a little more. He really does look big and strong!
I know it is hard to get little ones to stay still for hosp. stuff when they are old enough to know stuff, but not old enough to understand. He apparently does a lot better with procedures than a lot of adults. You know Grandpa is sending Blessings down his way today. I will not have computer use until Monday but will check in then.
Love and hugs to all!

Dear Melanie and Family,
Blessings on you all and will keep AJ and you in prayer around the beginning of November. I agree that Summer is crazy busy. I will try to contact you directly, Melanie, to catch up. We planted a Mountain Ash tree in memory of my brother, Dennis, right by our driveway here at our Minnesota lakeside home. He would love it here....and I feel close to him here. He is not far away from all of us who loved him.I just saw Grandpa Gaddis in Florida last week and he looks great at 87, without a care in the world!
Also, Jordan and AJ have a new cousin?? as your cousin Justin and wife Stephanie had a baby boy Alexander Deles Dernier born on Aug. 29 in Cocoa Beach.Lots of love to you all.
Take care and keep in touch,

I got to see Bryce and Jack play in their soccer games and help Robbie celebrate his first birthday! Hope you all have been able to stay healthy and upbeat - you are truly an inspiration! Love to you all, Kathy

Melanie & Howard -

I check in on AJ's web site from time to time and now I see he's facing yet another huge challenge in November. My healing thoughts will be with all of you during that time.

Dennis was my coworker, boss, but most important, like a brother to me since we travelled together when he worked here at the State of Ohio. I know that Dennis's optimism and positive attitude will be a force for all of you during AJ's hospital stay.

I think of Dennis every day and I still miss him, so I know you must miss him terribly.

My thoughts remain with you and your whole family.

Hi Gang,
Sorry for the delay but the winter was not good to me here in Pennsylvania. Can not stand the cold weather like I did in my Youth.
Presently have our house up for sale as we are moving back to Carolina to get closer to Duke Medical Center. Have been going there every six (6) weeks for checkups since November when they detected rejection of my lings. Darn nit! Everything was going fairly well until then.
We are looking around the Rozboro area in northern Carolina so we are closer to Duke and outside the major taxing areas.
Kathy is doing fair but still has her stomack problems. We have found the doctors here in Pa. are not that up to date on the latest procedures. Also, our insurance from North Carolina is very IFFY up here and does not cover lots of visits. Expect all this to happen in the next few months. I need to have one more clear BRONC done on 7 JUne before they will declare me clear of the rejection episode.
We have found Hershey Medical not that great as they had an influx of India doctors with rude demeanor actions. They will not accept our NC insurance either.
HAPPY to hear all is going well especially with AJ.
Miss Jordan is a lovely looking young lady.
LOVE YOU ALL.

Hi Melanie, Howard, Jordan & AJ...

Image hosting by TinyPic Happy Birthday AJ & Jordan. Hope you had a lovely birthday.

My name is Leisa and I have a son like you AJ his name is Jordan aged 6 and he has Alagille's. I found your beautiful website through an Alagille's group and am so pleased I was able to read about you and see your photos.

You sound just like my son in that you are just about to walk. Jordan was the same - he has a twin brother who was running before Jordan was even walking but he has made up for it ever since.

I sure hope you continue to go well and hopefully by the time I look in again you will be walking.

Take care and thankyou for allowing me the chance to learn about you all. It is so lovely to read about other families that experience what we do.

All my love..........

Happy Birthday to 2 very special children! I think about you all often, but especially around February. What an amazing couple of years it has been. We are pretty well settled here in Williamsburg....looking forward to seeing you hopefully this spring. Jack has had sleep apnea since his palate surgery in December and has to be hooked up to a monitor and oxygen at night, so they can't travel, but we have been out to see them a couple of times. Kristy and her husband will be here this weekend, and my parents are on the waiting list at a very nice independent/assisted living place nearby. Life is good! So glad to hear AJ is getting good reports from the doctors. I am anxious to hear how the group therapy session goes - I will call soon. Take care - love, Kathy

Dear Melanie and Howard,
Your steadfast spirit amazes me as always, as you can see the "silver lining" to every storm cloud that pops up. You definitely inherited your beloved Dad's optimistic perspective and acceptance of the beauty of life. As I have reflected this week on the qualities of Dennis' life ...the positive nature he portrayed toward everyone is one quality that stands out among all his qualities(and they were ALL good). Blessings on you and all your family at this time and Yes he does live on in our hearts!Congratulations on the walking thing, AJ!

Hi Melanie, I was told about you and your family last weekend. My son Kevin also has heart and liver disease and looks a lot like AJ. He has Alagilles Syndrome. I know what you are going through. I read your journal history and the similarities are amazing. Keep up the good work. Your son wouldn't be where he is today if it wasn't for you and your family's dedication and love. I believe the same is true for my Kevin. Kevin is one year past his life expectancy now and he keeps pushing along. They are truly special little guys. And tough beyond words. Take care and I will be checking on AJ to see how he's doing. God Bless.

Hi gang, Love the new pics. Miss Jordan is a lovely young lady. AJ is developing at a slower pace, but can recognize the resemblance with his DADDY. Great looking family. Happy you could get off to OHIO for a vacation. You all deserve it as often as you can go. Will be praying for AJ's excellent doctor news in the coming visits. Summer has been rough for me. My kidneys are only operatung at 25% now. The medication is keeping me alive but also killing me in another way. Just started bi-weekly PRO - CRIT shots to aid my red blood cell count.

I am so proud of how well you are doing with all of this - you are such good parents and strong in the areas where you need to be strong. Wish I could give you both a big hug, but I'm much too far to do that...but give each other one for me and know I love you and will always keep you in prayer. AJ is an amazing child...and why wouldn't he be??? You're his parents!! (I think his grandmother may have passed on some of her incredible genes, as well....what do you think?) Hugs, Nan

I am so sorry to hear the news about A.J. We will keep you all in our prayers. As you may know Alex was treated at Children's in DC. If I can be of any help given our experience there, please let me know. I will be happy to help. His surgeon was Kurt Newman (may be spelled differently), and I also know Dr. Gerry Martin from my years at Chevy Chase Presbyterian (we were both youth advisors together). They are both terrific very upbeat people and extremely well regarded in their field. I believe that Dr. Newman is now Chief Surgeon and Dr. Martin may be head of the Cardiac unit.

Unfortunately, my dad has been at Hopkins all week as he was just diagnosed with cancer so I am hard to reach. It would be great to talk with you and would give me something positive to think about. Please call me in my cell phone if you would like to talk to me, 703-216-8996.

In the meantime, God bless AJ and the rest of your family. Try to hold your chin up. I know that this must be so hard for all of you. Keep focusing on all of those great milestones of his!! I wish you well and hope that this procedure goes well and he is on his road to recovery soon! At Hopkins there is a big statue of Jesus and a prayer book. I will make sure to stop by tomorrow and say a special prayer for AJ.

Best wishes,
Barbara Angel

Hi Howard, Mel, Jordan and AJ!!! Happy New Year!! Have been keeping up to date since Monday, but don't want to call and add to your hectic time this week. Please know that Jim, Jack and I are pulling for AJ and hope he returns home soon. Sounds like you are in good hands at Childrens. I'll try to connect with you guys this weekend.
Love and kisses to all.....Jim, Mindy and Jack
