Hey Nancy! What incredibly happy news that Matthew got married! Back when I was on ALL-KIDS all the time I thought times like that would never happen. And to share it with his donor is so amazing. As I said back then, you and Matthew are two of the bravest people in the entire world.I am so happy for you! Graydon has had more than his share of troubles and late effects, but he's a 12-year survivor this year so no complaints. Congratulations to Matthew and your entire family!!!

I should NOT have read this post at work as people are wondering why I am crying at my desk :). I remember when I first "found" Matthew's CaringBridge site. It was right as you all were facing the FINAL relapse as he was facing BMT and everything that went along with it. I remember reading when Greg was called from home and there were fears of cancer returning. I remember reading when you FINALLY got to go home......and then when he got to return to school. You all have fought this battle with grace and dignity. You all deserve to celebrate his graduation and His healing power.

It sure was a pleasure for my wife Carole and I to meet the three of you at the Baccalaureate Mass and dinner. I wondered what the big ovation was for when they introduced Matt. I asked Alex and he told me and I was so happy to hear that you graduated on time and with honors. What a accomplishment that is. You should be very very proud. I have read some of your journal and speaking from experience as you know you have gone through what I did times 3. WOW!!! You are a inspiration to so many people. I really would like to stay in touch with you and your family. If you ever need someone to talk to that has been through what you have give me a call. Or just call me to say Hi. The website is awesome!!! Your caregiver your mom has done a wonderful job of keeping it up to date and in reading your entries has kept all of the medical staff on there toes. You need to do that. What a journey you have all gone through. I hope and pray everything continues to go well for you.
P.S. If possible I would like a copy of the picture you took of Matt and I on graduation night.

It has been a long journey, but I would never have had such a deep friendship with you without it. And we will probably make the trip up there for a day or so while we are in OH visiting 'home'. I know that it will be so hard to let him go but I know that you are soo happy for this normal milestone... :) I have been keeping up y'all through FB so I am so glad to hear that Logan is a bit better that the past few weeks. We continue to pray for him. I think of you all often especially this time of year (Lighthouse time). Hope you all have a super spring!

Sooooooo.....should I NOT tell you about the time my cousin and I went to Cedar Point and met these guys who worked there and ended up staying for 2 extra days with them? Okay, seriously, we did and it was mostly innocent and WAY fun!
OMG! I cannot believe our Matt is striking out on his own! He will officially be Ryne's hero in overdrive now that he is going to work at Cedar Point (the only thing better in his mind would be a cast member at Disney)!

Dang.....now we really need margs!
love to each and every one of you and a kiss on the forehead of Logan!

I did the same thing with Tyler's supplies last summer- gave them to a friend that goes on medical missions every summer. It was hard to sift through all that stuff...but I am glad that I was able to get through it and feel so much better for getting it all off his closet floor. (But of course the rest of the closet is the same.) We donated his prosthesis this past October to our childrens hospital where he was treated. That was super hard, but I am so glad that it is being used and helping other kids. I am so glad that Matthew continues to do so well- we sure would love to have another week in the sun with you all!

Nancy-
I check here periodically to see how you & the family are doing. I am so thankful that Matthew is 100% donor stuff! I feel for Logan - I was having 24/7 migraines, too...with a lovely sprinkling of horrible dizziness. I went to the Balance/dizziness center at ENT, and they diagnosed the "migraines with vertigo". They put me on a migraine preventative called Elavil (generic: Amitriptyline) and IT WORKS. I get 2-3 per month now. Amitriptyline is actually an anti-depressant, because the latest theories involve brain chemicals - serotonin to be specific. Are you still at EBM? Take care!

PS I cried through my entire MRI and a nice technician had to hold my hand through the whole thing. I was 33. :)

You need time to readjust. No one wants the drama and crises you've had, but it makes sense that you adjusted to those things - now you need to "unadjust"!

It's just a matter of time before you fill your time with other, stuff - you know, the non-cancer kind? Then one day you'll wonder how you ever had time to handle all that you've had to handle...

Dear Mary Ann,
Terri called to tell me about your cancer diagnosis and some of the treatment details. I am so sorry. I just wanted to find you and give you a hug. Since you are in Rochester,I'm just going to have to send you as many good wishes and positive thoughts as I can cram into a daytime and I'll wait until you get back to Grand Rapids for the hug. I love hearing of your optimism and hopefulness. It's the only way. I hope you do for yourself everything and anything you need right now.I'll be in touch. If there is anything I can do, let me know.

Poor Logan, feeling so miserable. I pray he's out enjoying his summer in no time.

You know, it's just a thought, but my family experiences migraines during mold season (which is now!).

And a family at our church had a child with these extreme migraines, finding very little relief (and his mom was a pediatric nurse!). This poor child endured tests to rule out a brain tumor, causing a fear I bet you're all too familiar with. Tests revealed nothing, but they discovered their home had mold growing in the basement! "Frank" has been migraine-free since the mold (they never knew they had) had been removed.

Take care.

I feel your pain! When we were asked to meet Jensen's donor, we had to fly to Dallas, right as they were closing schools in the Dallas area for the Swine Flu epidemic. We went to many stores in search of Purell, couldn't find any and ended up taking a ziplock bag full of little 3 oz bottles we filled from our home stock on the plane as well as clorox wipes. HA!Nancy! I have that same fear of spiders. Did you also know Tarantulas have tiny hairs that fly off their bodies when they are provoked? ewww. We have a tiny cabin on a lake and everytime we go down there, I have to vacuum up webs and spiders, look under every piece of furniture, check the bedding, etc before I even unpack. Then while sleeping, every little sensation on my skin, I flip the light on and throw back the covers. John is not usually amused by this behavior...

So here it comes the long awaited guestbook entry bear
with me here gotta get my fingers warmed up and stretched

Matthew it's here day 500, it's been a long and bumpy road
to this day but well deserved for everyone in the family.
Your going to be senior which means this is your last real
summer vacation which means curfews should be pushed back
and saying yes should occur more when you ask if you can do
something. You got that Nancy, just say YES (and send him
off with a bottle of sunscreen and a hat)!!!
Nancy and Greg, you two are two amazing people who deserve
nothing but the best, you have shown us true scarifice.
Your marriage has endured a lot these past couple years
but you held true to your vows and your kids will thank
you for that and one day look to you as heros for that.
Please know this will not occur until they are married so
you have a while.
Logan and Brittany you both made it to day 500 and you
also deserve a celebration for that. Way to go, it was not
easy for you but you did it and had great attitudes
through it as well.
Matthew, you have an amazing group of friends who I can
bet all say that they look up to you! You have taught so
many people to never give up!!

I can't believe it has been 500 days. Congratulations!!!
How is your summer class going? I bet you can't wait for Senior year to start. I think Kimberly is heading over to your house now to say goodbye. Sean is already in Spain and Katie, Shelby and Jordan should be flying now. Kimberly is bringing up the rear. (Insert joke here). We head to Chicago tomorrow and then Lauren and I are staying there until Friday. Do you want me to pick up some Bears stuff while I'm there. Just let me know. Congratulations again and let us know when your games are on Saturday.NEVER GIVE UP!!

I had a dream last night about Matthew...even though I have never even met him! I had a dream that I met you guys in Disney World because all the doctors that Matthew had ever seen, and even the top cancer specialist in the world said he would forever be cancer free! It was a beautiful dream...and hopefully a beautiful reality! Hope all is well and the tummy bug didn't get everyone.

I realize I've slacked off on the jokes (sorry)
so here is one for the weekend!! Enjoy!! :0)

***********************************************
Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, 'Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter.'

Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars'

One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.'

To this, Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars.'

The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars.'

Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!'

Morris replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!

So nice to read all these happy updates. Sadly, in our house we're almost unaware of the Super Bowl this year. Gulp--can you believe it? Sounds like the White House party will have a pro-Steelers bent, since President Obama says he loves the Steelers second only to his Bears.

Go Steelers! Have fun today, and eat a few wings for us.

Hey Fab Five!! What a week of excitement you have had.
Steelers make it to the superbowl (i'm supporting the
Cardinals though sorry), and you have 100% donor cells.
It worked just like it's suppose too, just like all
the journals and books say a BMT is suppose to work.
Everyone prayed so hard for you and we flooded the big
guy's office with post-it notes and he got to each one of
those post-it notes, prayer is amazing. Matthew, you are
wonderful man (yes, Nancy i said man) who deserves the
best future out there for you. You have surprised a lot of
people out there and inspired a lot of people as well.
I pray that next fall you get hit the road with your cross
country team, go to your winter dance, prom, skip school
on senior skip day, simply enjoy life with few
restrictions, and for your family you have an amazing
family, you've got it all:) Matthew you are in

I'm here! I made it (late as usual, but what else would you expect??) I have to say Matt....
It WORKED!!!!! You are the one, you are our proof that it really can work and it really can and does work just like "they" say it's supposed to!!!
I also want to say the I knew it would, I just did. I told your Mom last year right around this very day that you were gonna be the one who it works on and it's gonna be just like they say it will and it's gonna WORK!!!!
So the moral to this story is....I should get a "pass" on my tardiness because I was right and this time it was a BIGGIE!!!!!!!
I am so proud of you and your Mom and Greg and the little ones and Justin and Grandma and Aunt Debbie and everybody that it took to get us to this day with you....

I suppose right now you're watching the Steelers. Looks like
it's going to go down to the wire. As a Brown's fan I can't
say I'm pulling for Pittsburgh though. Hope all else is
well. Winter storm coming our way, if there's no school do you
get off too? Keep fighting and....

Hey Matt, Nancy and gang,
Wow... just checking in on all of you and once again, was in tears reading all you have been thru and all you have OVERCOME!!!!! AMAZING WITH A CAPITAL A!!!! and to think you even passed calculus and honors English while going thru all of that ! YOURE THE MAN!!!!! It's time to look ahead to the future and to all of the positive's this new year may bring!!! You're home with those who love you the most, and as our good friend Dorothy from the wizard of Oz says : "There's no place like Home". Thank You once again for sharing you story with all of us! Taking a stroll down memory lane for you has not been an easy one...but OHHHH the joy you have brought to all of those who have been holding you close in prayer, especially when we can see that our prayers are indeed being answered! You are a Shining Star, a beacon of hope for all of us!!! My Holly is still in Italy, and is currently in Assasi! She was at a Healing Mass at the tomb of St. Claire. There the pilgrims on the trip were asked to place their hands of the walls of the tomb and remember those who needed physical or spiritual healing! Holly prayed for you Matthew and for your entire family!! she has had some very emotional days on this pilgimage, lots of tears shed but has grown so much in the spiritual sense and has made friends from all across the United States! Here's to the Happiest New Year, one of continued Health and friendships and many many blessings ! Love to all, Claudia and gang

Happy New Year!! I enjoyed the trip down memory lane..it seems so long ago. I remember the phone calls, the bingo games played on Skype, the tour of your hospital room on the computer and the nurses talking to us when we were on the computer, the trips to Cincinnati to visit and most of all the coming home party. We continued the year with fun, food, games and laughter. Who could forget some of the things we have found out about each other playing some of the games we have played. I have brought much entertainment to everyone when I play Mario Cart on the Wii and how about Greg singing to Sing Star on the Play Station. It was a roller coaster year..lets hope this one is a little bit quieter. We have to rest up for SENIOR YEAR! Can't wait to play some of our new games we got from Santa. NEVER GIVE UP!!

Hi Matt!
Happy Epiphany! So...did you watch last night's playoff game?
Tell your mom sorry about her team (maybe next year will be
the Colt's year)!!! But next weekend will be the Steeler's
game! Do you start classes this week? You're in our prayers.

Wow Nancy, I have followed Matthews transplant journey from the beginning, but reading through this last entry really was unbelievable. You should all be so proud of not only Matthew but yourseleves. After this journey, there is probably not a journey in life that your family cannot endure. May the Lord continue to bless each of you through 2009 and beyond.

Blessings,
