Nicholas has taught me far more than all my Northwestern University Instructors put together. I still struggle sometimes, still lose my sense of wonder, and forget the power of prayer. At times, I get lost and long for the meaningless preoccupations that once dominated my life. But Nick forgives me for my limitations, loving me unconditionally exactly as I am. There are whole weeks when I forget that my son has cancer. But there’s never a moment when I don’t feel incredibly lucky to be sharing life’s perilous, unpredictable, wonderful adventures with a son who, in his own ways, is absolutely perfect. And thinks his mama is perfect as well.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time set aside to raise awareness about the #1 cause of death by disease in children.

Nick started 2nd grade and absolutely loves his teacher. He is still struggling with reading, spelling, writing and math but the school promises to give him the best guidance to “catch” him up. He has grown up so much the past year. He is finding his way into a social group at school. I know I can’t help him make friends, but I just want to shout to all the kids how wonderful Nick is and what a great friend he would make. He still loves Spongebob and Star Wars and his trains!!

He will be a big brother again in a few weeks and he has mixed emotions about this. He loves Gianna but at the same time thinks she is the biggest pain so we’ll see how having 2 younger siblings works for him.

I'm still writing my book, my co-write is having a baby in September so we are a bit behind schedule but hope to catch up and complete the book by Fall 2009. We've written 3 solid chapters and many more to go.

Ciao,
Karrie Nick's mom :-)

Ask anyone who has heard these words, “I’m sorry … your child (your brother, your sister, your grandchild, your nephew, your niece, your classmate, your friend, your neighbor, your student)… has cancer” and they will share with you stories of strength, courage, hope, and about the urgent need for a cure.

Children with cancer change our lives and our world. Only research cures childhood cancer. At long last, we will be harnessing our nation’s vast resources and expertise to put an end to a scourge that takes the lives of more than 2,300 children every year.

July 29, 2008 President George W. Bush has signed into law H.R. 1553, the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, at a ceremony in the Oval Office.
The bill authorizes $30 million annually over five years, providing funding for collaborative pediatric cancer clinical trials research, to create a population-based national childhood cancer database, and to further improve public awareness and communication regarding available treatment and research for children with cancer and their families.
