My son was diagnosed in March with MPS2, we find we can cope sometimes but other times i admit it is a struggle not to fear the worst and dwell on that. Hope you're feeling better for Christmas and that cough goes away soon. Zyrtec was one that Jesse used for quite sometime.. we found out it caused much muscle weakness with him and he eventually nearly stopped walking for 50% of the time. It did help the sinus's though and allergies problems.. but it wasn't worth the adverse effects for our man. I pray you find something that works well and has no adverse effects. We now use a syrup called B & T Cough and Bronchial syrup. It does pretty good for coughs and mucous.

Well I'm still not feeling well, and I haven't been to school this week. Mom took me to see the doctor today, and I hope I start feeling better soon. Next week I have to go to UNC hospital for a few days. No fun!!

Hello, I was at Camp Barnabas and I was privileged enough to have Kraig in our cabin. I was a CIA for another camper, but I got to spend a lot of time with Kraig. He is a great kid and I really enjoyed having him there, he taught me a lot this week and was a blessing to have. I was excited the second to last day when I heard about how the doctors might have found the enzyme, crazy what they can do these days. Well I wish all of your family and friends the best and just wanted to let you know how much of a blessing Kraig was to have in our group. I'll be praying for you all. Hey Kris! I'm finally checking in on several MPS kids, and wanted y'all to know I'm thinking of you. Get some reflux meds...it will do wonders. Also raise the head of Kraigs bed. I tried quilts under the mattress but that doesn't work as well as blocks under the two headboard legs/feet. That will also do wonders. Glad to know all else is going okay. I ditto Karen on the Ph probe. Edie had it done while at home around 18 months. We of course had to tape it to her face so she did not pull it out. It didn't bother her at all. We even have pictures of her smiling big with that ugly tube hanging out of her nose!

Lindsey has the PressureProbe right now. It's to monitor and/or drain the fluid from your brain. In March, we did this to "see" what her pressure registered. It was low. On Sunday night they did it again because her spinal tap showed very high pressure. It was like 60-ish. They drained 30, and when they did the probe, it was another 30++ that's been draining every since. They hope to take it out by the weekend. HOPEFULLY we won't have to do a shunt or internal drain. HOPEFULLY her pressure is just from the infection.

If this sounds like what Kraig is having done in January, then I can tell you about it...it's not "easy" as a Mom. They use numbing medication for the skull, possibly give some general anesthesia, and then drill a hole in the skull - I know, sounds horrific. Then a catheter is inserted into the brain that's connected to the monitor and drainage bag. Neither time has Lindsey even acted like she feels it (facial grimaces, posturing, squirming - none of that).

The PH Probe is a peace of cake. It's a great idea to do it both at the same time - two birds with one stone! I've heard of alot of MPS kids having acid reflux and/or swallowing/digestive issues. It will tell them whether or not to medication to help/aid it. I think that was alot of Lindsey's problems a couple years ago with her crying (indigestion/reflux).

Have I filled your ears full? Sorry...I hope all goes well with the procedures. Dr. Muenzer is very familiar with all of Lindsey's tests/scans, even the ones that aren't typical for Sanfilippo kids that were done anyway just to "see".

Hi Kris,
Edie has had VP shunt surgery twice. The first time her recovery took about 2 weeks (she was 2) however as it turned out, the shunt may never have been placed properly. So then she had the surgery two years later when we started to doubt that the shunt was even working. Well that time she was up "running" the halls of the hospital and jabbering like crazy the day after the surgery. So basically her recovery took about 24 hours. And since the second shunt, she has never taken a daytime nap (not sure if that's good or bad :-)!) Good luck in your decision. We are looking forward to catching up with all our fabulous MPS families next month!!! Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm glad your trip was worthy of the time spent. We really like the Neuro Docs at Chapel Hill. Drs. Greenwood, Tennisen and D'Cruz are the neurologists we see (particularly Greenwood we love). Drs. Kilpatrick and Ritter (neurosurgeons) did the pressure probe on Lindsey (drilled hole in her skull and inserted the catheter to her brain to measure fluid). They travel to/from WakeMed in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, so I think they come highly recommeded/skilled...just in case you travel back to CH for Kraig's.

Hi! This is the first time I have been to your site. I was reading your journal and the rash must be something going around. My 9 month old is going to daycare and about 10 kids have had the same thing. Most of the doctors are saying it is a bacterial virus that is contagious. I think it has to run its course. I'm so sorry you lost your Barney. I know that Mom can get a replacement but it's just not the same. Your Mom loved that Barney and wanted to keep it forever. She wanted to fondly remember the days your held it!

Hello! How's the summer so far? I didn't realize that Kraig had a website until I was ready to email you on the church message board. I will keep Kraig and the rest of your family in my daily prayers. It is so heartbreaking to see these little children (Kraig, Hannah, Cora, & Alayna)going through so much--but what a blessing they are to all of us.
