If I could have just one more day and
wishes did come true,
I'd spend every glorious moment
side by side with you.
Recalling all the years we shared
and memories we made,
how grateful I would be
to have just one more day.
Where the tears I've shed are
not in vain and only fall in bliss,
so many things I'd let you know
about the days you've missed.
I wouldn't have to make pretend
you never went away,
how grateful I would be to
have just one more day.
When that day came to a close
and the sun began to set,
a million times I'd let you know
I never will forget.
The heart of gold you left behind
when you entered Heaven's gate,
how grateful I would be to
have just one more day.

Said goodbye, turned around
And you were gone.
Faded into the setting sun,
Slipped away.
But I won’t cry
'Cause I know I’ll never be alone.
For you are the stars to me,
You are the light I follow.

I will see you again,
This is not where it ends.
I will carry you with me,
'Till I see you again.

To John's beloved family - my heartfelt sympathy. I remember a day in the office, before his illness, and we were talking about our family's. I'll never forget the look in his eye when he spoke. Dea, he said that you weren't just his wife, but his best friend! I only had the opportunity to be around Stephanie, but you only had to look at John to see the love in his eyes for his daughter.
John was a Giant in my eyes. He was charming, witty, honest and full of life. God Bless John in his new home. May the love of our Savior keep you strong. To all of you, my heartfelt sympathy. I will miss him greatly.

Sometimes only children can say it best. Franklin, Nan, Mei and I were driving home to Memphis from Chicago yesterday. It rained and thundered the whole way. At around 7:00 p.m. the Sun broke through the rain in the West. I said, "Look girls. Look how hard the Sun is fighting." Then Nan said, "Yes Momma. It's like John. John is the Sun and the rain is the cancer." Mei said she was thinking the same thing. She then looked to the East and saw a huge rainbow and said, "It's John he is saying hello to us." We drove on in silence for a while and when the rainbow disappeared Nan and Mei said, "Goodbye John. We will see you later." How incredible is that? That these two ten year olds just naturally know how to keep John with us. As Dea's sister I thank all who have loved John and his family. Lorna

To The Hamilton Family,
John and I were classmates in high school, and I got to know him even better when I joined the Knights in 1972. For the next two summers, I was honored to enjoy his humor, compassion, and drive for excellence. I wish we had not lost touch, but as our lives took different paths, I often wondered about John, and prayed for his happiness. For his family, I pray that God will comfort you in your loss, knowing that he will never be far away. His is truly a Knight's tale.

To the Hamilton family -
My most sincere sympathy on John's passing. Even though years and miles have separated me from you and all of my drum corps friends, times like this remind me of how special your friendship was and still is to me. When I showed up to teach drums in 1973 as a stranger and a drum corps newbie, John and his buddies (Cal, Vandy, John Johnson, Gregg, ...) accepted me into their circle of friends, helped me learn the ropes, and gave me some of the best times of my life.

My thoughts will be with you tomorrow as you celebrate John's life.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Hamilton family.Though some of you don't know me, John and I crossed paths many years ago in Drum and Bugle Corps. Being a young impressionable 2nd soprano, John was someone to be admired for his dedication to the group. His quiet patience with us newbies was greatly appreciated because his size alone was intimidating enough. He must have been such a big man to accomodate the warm loving heart he had. He obviously went on to find the woman of his dreams and had wonderful children that will leave a strong testament to the kind of person he was. He may be gone, but will never be forgotten. The entire Hamilton family will be in my prayers as they celebrate the life of John.

Dear Hamilton Family-
I am so sorry to hear about John's death. Though I mostly knew him as Cindy & Kathy's big brother, there always seemed to be a good "John story" to tell(my favorite one being how he got traction for his car in a snowstorm by jamming pizza boxes under the tires - I loved the practical creativity). Dear John's Family, We have known John since childhood and were especially close through the teen and early adult years with the Knights and ISU. The Drum Corps family created a bond that lasts forever. We last saw John at Cal Korth's funeral and we were so happy to see him looking so well at that time. Camelot was always kind of our (Knights) vision of Heaven. John is looking down right now with that knowing smile. "The rain will never fall till after sundown" and he doesn't have to fight any more. I am so sad to hear of John's passing. I have been thinking about all the years that I spent time with him while we were growing up. School, Sunday school, band, drum corps, ISU, Delta Chi parties, and rugby parties. My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire family. He will be missed by so many people that were fortunate to be a part of his life.

Even though I haven't talked to John for a number of years, I can honestly say that not a week went by without thinking of him at least once. Just this past Sunday he entered my thoughts when we were discussing nicknames and several of the ones we used for "Hams" entered my mind instantly. I couldn't use them all in a family situation of course, but they were there anyway. The world is a little less better for his passing, but heaven undoubtedly is a little better. We'll keep the family in our prayers, God bless and keep you John Hamilton.

Dear Dea, Michael, Rachel, Chad and Steff:
We were all deeply saddened today when we learned of John’s passing. While we know he had been courageously battling for a long period now, his final struggle brought an end to this wonderful man that was much too soon. We are thinking of you and send our heartfelt condolences. Many people were deeply moved by the devotion you and your family showed during the period of John’s final illness. Your concern was a clear indication of your love for him. Although he was a fiercely independent and private man, I know he appreciated your devotion and your help. He loved you so and you were always a source of strength to him. With affection and deep sympathy, we hope that your fond memories of John will give you comfort in the days and months ahead.

Dear Dea & Family,

I wanted to share this story with you. I always sleep through the night. Last night I awoke from a deep sleep sometime between 3 & 4 AM. I was wide awake and immediately began thinking of John. I turned over and Cindy was crying in her sleep. I have no doubt that John stopped over this morning to say goodbye to the two of us on his way to heaven. I told this story to Cindy when we both had arisen this morning and about an hour later I read the news. Our deepest sympathies go out to you Dea and your children. John was truly a great person and we will miss him very much.

The bravery in man is never more pronounced then when he allows his friends and loved ones an atmosphere of relief watching the way he accepts and fights, accepts the love that each gives to him in a time that only he can understand. This is a great friend, this man John, and we admire the atmosphere that he creates in a time that only he can give us comfort in. Don't know from where or how John is getting his bursts of strength, but the love and support from Parents, sisters, Dea, kids, family, friends, and prayers are strong motivators. John is gallant in his fight and is not going to give up willingly. His family and friend support would be unbelievable, but then again, it is for John and he is indeed special. We all will keep praying. xxoo Greg

John:

I spoke to Bob Matthews today and he told me that you are back in treatment. So sorry to hear that, but I knew something was up when I left you a voice mail a week or so ago and hadn't heard back.
Well, B. Vanselow is the number one guy at Cambridge now, John Rittenhouse and George Young both jumped ship to other companies.
I'm still busy as always, training a new person here (always seem to be training a new person!!). Also keeping busy with ISIA. Hank Kinzie left the lawfirm of NPBKL in December so now our main atty is Chris Gibbons. He and I are pretty busy in various groups with the new WC legislation now in effect.
Also heard Craig left from Bob. Thats a surprise!
Hope you are doing good, my fingers are crossed and my prayers are with you and your family.

Take care,

Don't stress about blood transfusions. I know it's scary, but it will help John so much, give him some energy, and it seems to be just another part of the transplant journey. The blood pressure thing seems to happen during transfusions; you'll get used to it if he requires any more. I'm praying SO hard for John and your family.

I was thinking of you, my fellow Bear fan, last Sunday. How could they have let us down so badly?! Now you need a double dose of cheering up. I'm ready and able whenever you need me, but does this mean we have to root for the Steelers as the only Midwest team left? But they beat the Bears, too! I'm so conflicted...

Hey, Hams! I hear you are barfing up a storm, sort of like a D-Chi walkout -- painting the bathroom walls at Whitewater and Oshkosh. Hang in there, brother! You have slayed the dragon before, and you will again.
Consider this my CONGRATULATIONS for your Sox winning it all. I'll bet you were primed for a Sox/Cards Series, but the Cards choked and couldn't even beat the pathetic Dis-Astros. I hope you get to eat some of Dea's turkey and catch a good tryptophan buzz.
Say strong and keep up the fight. You are tougher than the Bears defensive line (but not as good-looking).

Little John, What a way to get out of holiday shopping. You will have to avoid the crowds again to recover. Should save some money that way. Since your parents have arrived in Texas we have had perfect weather, but it sure was hot before they arrived. Mary and I are wearing livestrong bracelets for a friend who just finished chemo and radiation for lung cancer successfully. We'll keep wearing them until you successfully finish your treatment. Have a great Thanksgiving weekend and be sure to pull for the Texas Aggies the day after.

Okay, you were hoping to never write in Caring Bridge and we were hoping to never read a less than "Alls well" entry. Stay positive that in this year of "do you believe that anything can happen" ...You got the Sox, the Bears (admit it, above .500 is more than expected), with your past results and determination, your health will be restored. Hang in there and if you want company in "keeping down fluids" I'll drink some sloe gin or mutiple bottles of wine (stopped rum at the first Terry Club visit 2 years ago)and sit on the sofa with you and compete for the toilet bowl. Get better soon so you can enjoy some turkey. Love, xxoo greg mitchell

Hey John Boy. Happy New Year! Here's hoping for continued great success in 2005. I just got off the phone with Doug. He's in Topeka KS on a business trip. He brought me up to date on your progress and I'm so happy to hear recovery continues in a very positive way. I'll bet you're elated to be back at work. We all dream about retiring in the future but I suspect sitting around day after day isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when the extended leave is not necessarily elective. I had called Doug to talk about Cal Korth. I'm sure you've heard the bad news. Listen kiddo, mark your calendar. There is a massive Knights reunion being planned for 2006. It is the corps' 40th anniversary. We're hoping several hundred people will attend. I fully expect to see your arguably ugly self at this event. It will be sometime around the 4th of July. '06. Don't forget. BTW, echoing Greg Mithchell's he/she concerns, I was wondering if you've experienced any recent difficulties parallel parking. No? Well that's a relief. But I suppose it's getting harder and harder for you to arrive anywhere on time. Oh, and try to be patient when some schmuck forgets to put down the toilet seat. Take care. Keep the faith. There are great days ahead. Wishing you the best always.

Dea, your December 10th entry was beautiful and well said. The Hamilton's have truly been blessed this year in so many ways and perhaps this event is an affirmation of Faith and Friendship for you and many of us who have witnessed John's strength as a person, the power of prayer, and the blessing of family, and of friends with you. Sing every verse of every christmas hymn this year.

Now, with John being a girl, do I still call him/her Brother or is he/she now a Little Sister? I don't know how I will feel when I hug him/her and tell him/her that I love him/her. Does he/she still want to watch the Bears (not that I do) or does he/she prefer figure skating. Does John still drink beer or now prefer white zin? I'm so confused and have so many questions. Are there continous mood swings and talking just to hear him/her self with really no point being made? I'll just see for myself over the Holidays. I will bring over my Streisand and Mantelo albums, do you still have a record player? xxoo greg

Hi to John, Dea and the HamilFamily!
I am reading the journal and happy to see you are making progress, Hams. The doctors are right, you are a star to all of us.
God, the Bears are pathetic! Watching The Mighty Quinn makes be yearn for the high-powered offense of Bob Avellini to Brian Baschnagle for three yards.
At least the Cards give you something good to watch (for two more games at least! "Go 'stro's") I just can't root for the Cardinals. If they were playing Osama Bin Laden and the Tora Bora Bears, I would have to really think about who to root for. How do you say "LaRussa sucks" in Arabic?
But I digress.
Talked to Steve Brown the other day. He says Hi and "hang tough" and wants to know if he can tunnel into your closet? Steve is living up in the mountains in Colorado, doing contract programming. Right now, he's working for Coors.
Also traded e-mails with Fred Lotter, who wants to know if anybody has seen Savoy's b_ _ g?!
Keep on truckin!

I'm glad to see you are running to stay in shape, because the Bears need you at free safety NOW. I have to get on my knees and bow to your Cardinals, much as it pains me. Meanwhile, the Cubs have collapsed like my 401K. (Mitchell will read this and throw up!)

HEY Hamiltrou! Sorry I haven't written sooner. I've been following your treatment and am thrilled to hear about your progress. There have been many strong positive thoughts coming your way from Geneseo. I've really enjoyed seeing the various photos on this website the past couple months. I can't say you've gotten any better looking over the past 30 years. The loss of hair is probably an improvement. But then of course, almost anything would have been. Keep the faith babe. I look forward to a day in the future when we can pop a cold one together. Maybe we can toss a cooler in the back seat of the car some night, sneak in through the exit of a drive-in movie, get caught, charged double for admission then get thrown out and almost arrested. Whoops! Forgot. Been there, done that. Oh well, we'll think of something. Take care buddy. There are great days ahead. JVDW

Hi Hoser. I heard you were ill so I thought I'd click on your Web page and sign in. You have quite the quest book! You know, I don't believe I've seen you in 30 or more years, but you look like the John I remember - just minus the hair. It's been a long time since we played in the horn line together. Precious memories they are! Well it's time you get well because a lot of people care about you. I'm thinking of you John. Will check back later.

John, Dea and family,
Know that you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers down here in TX. It sounds as if ya'll are doing great and I'm so happy for John. With all the thoughts and prayers you are receiving these days, it's no wonder why! Oh, and don't let Doug beg out of paying for that first round of beers either as he just closed the biggest software deal of the year at Bentley. Take care.

Hey John - just got back from Kaua'i and it appears lots has happened while I was away. You are home - hooray! Can see some snow on the mountains out my office window - again, think skiing in Colorado! Or golf, the golf course up in Leadville was gorgeous a couple of weeks ago - I believe it is the highest golf course on the globe. Take care, Paula

John and Dea:

Great news today.

John, I'm sure you know that a day on the golf course is better than any day in the office. The driving range is included and even miniature golf. But then again you can have a great walk in the woods spoiled by your golf game.

Take care, and remember you and Dea and the kids are always in our family's thoughts and prayers.

Hi,
Working from home today and of course I have to take a look in your "book'. Saw Stephanie and she looks great and said you're now getting bored at home. What a guy! The move is complete. We look like a Jerry Lewis telethon!!!We're in a horseshoe. We do have a few laughs!!! Glad you're getting stronger & stronger. I saw Irena's baby last week. He's really cute,(you know some babies don't look so good ha ha) and Irena is just glowing. You should see how beautiful her house is turning out. Her husband does top end work. Well, take care and I still am missing your face. It just isn't the same without you!!!

Hi,
Just got back from Cleveland for the week-end. I babysat for Tyler while Mike (son) & Debbie went to the Sox/Cleveland game. It was a nice break for me. Nice Hotel, Pool and watching the Olympics. Ready for work tomorrow! Next week-end is Bryan's wedding. The roof top party at Rock Bottom was excellent. The UW's really enjoyed themselves and so did we!!!

Nice photo shoot, If Howard doesnt let you back maybe you could be on West coast Choppers. Any way I thought Weds. was joke day so here we go.**** A man walks into a bar and sits down and orders a drink. At the end of the bar are two guys talking. the first guy says I grew up in this town, The second guy repiles ME Too. The 1st guy says I went to St.Marys High School, 2nd guy says Me Too. 1st guys says I then went on to Notre Dame, once again the reply is Me too.
So the guy looks at the bartender and says "whats up with the guys at the end of the bar. The bartender replies, " Oh thats just The O'Sullivan twins and they're drunk again" lol
Hope your feel better today than yesterday

On a side note...my sorority alone raised over $25,000 for Relay for Life last year. We were the top in the entire event. Hi John, Dea, Chad, Steff, Rachel. Michael:
Wow you are quite an incredible family - it is amazing how you all manage to do the hard stuff with such humor and love.
Glad to hear you are on a little release from the hospital- knowing you- your time will be less than the 88 days to go. I have been trying to imagine you without a beard- you probably look about 12- since you are the young one of the bunch.
I guess from our Puerto Rico time, I can not give platelets- We were not sure when to try to give- will you let us know when John needs more? If it only lasts 4 days- Carl can still try to give. I will contact others - and some people have already offered.
Can we come visit?
Love to you all

So I just finally got this address from my mom, so I figured I would get on here and say Hi! So I tried to get someone in the Dayton area to do platelettes so I could get them sent to you, but no one does them, and then I also found out I cannot give since I was in Mexico in March. Sorry about that. I heard you moved into the Apartment, hope things are going well. Law school is a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I miss you guys sooo much. OK, so John is clean shaven!! Lets get an updated photo on the web site to see what he really looks like. Dallas saw that the Bears won a football game so we decided to do the same last night. We made ours a little more exciting than BEARS football, getting the winning touchdown with 6 seconds left in the game. It was our quarterback from EASTERN ILLINOIS that pulled it out for us. Its great to hear that everything is going so well for youall.

John & Dea:
Chad, Steff, Michael and Rachel have always been great kids. It has been fun watching them grow into great adults along with our kids. I guess we're both pretty lucky. I always wished there was an instruction manual to follow. The best we can do is use our judgement and follow our parents' example.

You all are always in our prayers.

Hamms...no hair, no beard, welcome to the club, most of us have been that way for years. Good to hear that you are a little better, go ahead and gamble by watching the Bears tonight and see how you feel tomorrow. Hey Chad, it's been many many years since hearing/seeing you; I hope life has been good to you other than the the current family health status; I'm sure all are glad you are here; yell if you need anything. Dea, you too; nice to see your sister and friends in the guestbook. Boy, we all had some times years ago. Prayers, Peace and love. xxoo greg

Hey Uncle John! I am glad to hear that you are feeling better. Things are crazy down here in Springfield, MO. My sorority has been getting for rush or "recruitment" (we're no longer aloud to call it rush). I wish we did rush like you did. We have to sing and dance and practice conversations. Hi John,
Gregg sent me an email with your website. I have been praying for you. (Sometimes a picture of our Grace Church Sunday School Class flashes through my head). It is wonderful to read all the good wishes you are receiving! I see you have kept in touch with Greg Mitchell and Mike Fee from Delta Chi days. That is cool. I know you didn't get your apparent love of Guiness beer from ISU! We drank the cheapest beer we could get in a keg. (By the way, aren't you supposed to drink Guiness warm?)

Hi John - here's a blast from your high school past, Patty McAvoy Stufflebeam here from Class of 1973. Gene & Mary have kept me informed on your treatment & gave me this website. You look the same in the Ireland photos except for the beard, of course. Will keep you & your family in my prayers, that's for sure. What a great gift from your little sister! Wonderful things happen all the time - look at Mary, fully recovered from breast cancer, and look at me - I'm getting remarried on 8/28 after 25 years as a divorcee! Seriously, will pray for you but you gotta do whatever the medical staff tells you, OK?

Hi John, Dea and family-
I hope you are starting to feel better as time passes. It does take a while to recuperate. At least Stef, Michael and Rachel are keeping you company--and cooking--how impressive. After reading the last journal entry--being the nurse here--Vitamin K is to help with clotting, in case you still weren't sure what it was for. I read my dad the updates every few days since he isn't too good with computers and wonders how you are doing. We are all praying for a fast recovery for you and hope the 100 days passes quickly. If any of you need anything or ever have a "nurse" question-feel free to contact me. God Bless!

John, we haven't kept in touch much over the years but I still have many fond (well some not so fond) memories of all our time in drum corps.(ESBFGNCCSSFCSSPWS!) My oldest, Pete, is living in Arlington Heights and is getting married next year. Youngest Art is at Western and has a steady girl too. Carol is still playing flute and will be a featured soloist with her symphony (Knox-Galesburg) next March. VanDeWoestyne got me into theatre in the 80's and I've been doing alot of that. Musical director of Jekyll and Hyde at Quadcity Music Guild and now directing a show at Richmond Hill. John you are in our prayers. I know it's easier said than done, but keep an upbeat attitude. It really does help. Mom had chemo last year and Dad had heart problems and I know their outlook helped their recovery. You're a young guy (I gotta say that cuz you're three years younger than me) hang in there. Go Bears, Go Cubs!

You have been in my thoughts all day. I spoke with Kathy tonight. I understand how you're doing. Today has been rough.

I was in a meeting today and my phone went off and it was from home. I ran to the door to see what was up. The good news was that Erin wanted Jess's cell phone number. It took about an hour for my heart to get back in place.

I realized that I've know you since I was 14. Long before your little sister grew up and I married her. I do think of you as my brother (without the in-law status).

Get well big boy!

John, Dea and Family,
I am a friend and co-worker of Doug Anderson's and I wanted to send you a scripture. I hope that it will encourage your hearts:

PSALM 139 O Lord, you have searched me and know me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, You know it all. You have enclosed me behind and before, And laid your hand upon me.

I pray that in this time that you will feel His presence and love for you, that John will be completely healed and the He will be glorified in it all.

In Christ,

Michelle Lee <michelle.lee@bentley.com>

Hi John: I know for a fact prayer works. Both my mom and dad, practically at the same time were diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and both are doing very, very well today. They didn't have an easy road to recovery, my mom had a grapefruit sized portion of her right lung removed, but they have recovered and if you saw them today you would never know what they have been through. I hope and pray that all goes well for you. Your Delta Chi friend, Steve Endsley
