The weekend of May 17th Donna Singer traveled to Memphis with friends and teammates to participate in the Memphis in May Triathlon (MIM). The race consisted of a .93 mile swim followed by a 24.8 mile bike ride and closing with a 6.2 mile run. Donna, as part of the Team in Training organization, was racing not only to finish but also to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Donna became involved in Team in Training when Travis Yon, the 10 year old son of close friends Melanie Goldish and Joe Yon was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Leukemia (www.keeptrying.com).
Travis survived his battle with Leukemia and Donna has continued to participate in triathlons and races to raise money for both the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Team In Training (www.teamintraining.org) and for the Tourette Syndrome Association (www.tsa-usa.org). Her commitment to supporting these organizations is unwavering and her energy, spirit, sense of humor and enthusiasm are contagious to anyone around her.
Tragedy struck the Singer family on Sunday, May 18th. Donna had completed the swim and was about 15 miles into the bike portion of the race when she took a fall and, even with the mandatory bike helmet, sustained a serious head injury. She was quickly airlifted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis where she has undergone several surgeries to relieve swelling of the brain and other neurological complications. Eric, Donna's husband, quickly flew down to Memphis from their home in Chicago to be by her side.
The mission of Friends of Donna Singer is to ease the strain on Eric and his family through personal and financial support. We pray that Donna will recover and we realize that this recovery will be a long and arduous journey, requiring Donna to go through significant rehabilitation.
You can help Eric, Donna and their family in a variety of ways: - Include Donna, Eric and their family in your prayers - Send cards and letters to be read to Donna and decorate her room (address below) - Send mail to Eric to help brighten his days and lighten his role as primary caregiver
- Giving your financial support (Fund information below). Eric and Donna will be incurring significant additional expenses for the foreseeable future. Your donation will be used for uncovered expenses related to Donna's care and the family's needs at this time. Examples include: o Covering travel and lodging expenses o Uncovered caregiver expenses o Air ambulance fees - once Donna can be transferred o Assisting Eric and Donna with additional household and personal expenses o Uncovered medical expenses / deductibles
The Singer family has indicated that, at an appropriate time in the future, any unused monies in the Friends of Donna Singer fund will be passed along to related nonprofit organizations.
One final note: Rather than saying "Just let me know what you need", PLEASE jump right in. Often it's harder on the family to ask for help, accept it and then dole out chores to others. With your involvement, we can all take the lead to support someone who has committed so much of her energy to helping others. Help us restore that contagious laugh, beautiful smile and spirit that make Donna such a special person. Help Eric understand that we are all there for him and that he can lean on us. Help their kids by helping us get Donna and Eric home, where there is so much love and support. Help us help them!
