Tara and family, I am so sorry for the death of your son Jace. It is so unnatural for us to lose our kids. My heart goes out to you. My youngest son also fought the Meddulo beast and lost his battle.

Hey Jacer!! I just wanted to let you know that I have to do a presentation in one of my college classes and I thought I would do mine over you and your battle with cancer! I got to talk with your mom about it at work and it went great. Brought tears to my eyes a couple times thinking of the ornery Jace that we all miss! Crazy how much of an impact you left on our little town of New Sharon :)

Hey guys! Your son has touched so many of our lives. I'm guessing I'm not the only person in this community who has been thinking of him lately, and saying an extra prayer for you. Just thought I'd share with you that you're in my heart, and having extra prayers said for you. Especially, as we are all anxiously gearing up for summer, and Jace's much loved "pool time!" Great post in memory of Jacer Travis. He was so very fortunate to have the family he did when he was here with us. You all love him, laughed with him, embraced him and portrayed what most people only wish they had as a family. MJ/marijeighn2010@gmail.com
A letter from Heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

"It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.

I need you here so badly, you are part of my plan.
There is so much that we can do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you.... in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who is in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain.

And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile."

So if you meet somebody who is sad and low;
Just lend a hand to pick them up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.... you're coming here with me.

AND GOD SAID

I said, "God, I hurt."
And God said, "I know."
I said, "God, I cry a lot."
And God said, "That is why I gave you tears."
I said "God, I am so depressed."
And God said, "That is why I gave you Sunshine."
I said, "God, life is so hard."
And God said, "That is why I gave you loved ones."
I said, "God, my loved one died."
And God said, "So did mine."
I said, "God, it is such a loss."
And God said, "I saw mine nailed to a cross."
I said, "God, but your loved one lives."
And God said, "So does yours."
I said, "God, where are they now?"
And God said, "Mine is on My right and yours will be in the Light."
I said, "God, it hurts."
And God said, "I know."

Love the pictures! I have never seen a baby with better
cheeks than Jace. Those cheeks are awesome.
He always seemed so much older and wiser to me. His
sense of humor and grace to which he handled all things
difficult, makes it difficult for me to believe that he
was only 9.....
Hoping that you all have a blessed Easter.

Hi Carrico's - What a sweet little guy who will always be so lovingly remembered by so many. Just the other day, out of the blue, Zach was talking about Jace and his amazing Hanna Montana drum solo. He had so many gifts for a kid of so few years.

Take care, I'm sure looking through those pictures is both healing and heartbreaking at the same time and we can only imagine how much you miss that wonderful little boy. We think of you often and pray for peace and healing.

I was just up surfing and thought I would stop by. I saw that Jenna was looking for a sign and thought of the CureSearch Race with the Hannah Montana song that Travis knew was a sign from Jace. It's funny that it was "The Best of Both Worlds"...Even though here on Earth it really stinks, can you imagine living in heaven in all of the splendor and excitement that Jace has? I would imagine for the first few days they needed someone to guide him from place to place, taking in all the beauty he had earned. Really, a sign? "The Best of Both Worlds"...I think that's what he got! Hugs-Carrie

I know how difficult Mother's Day is for those whose child is in Heaven. This poem has been a blessing for me as I hope it will be for you

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes & pray that he'll come back,
Or you can open your eyes & see all that he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow & live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
Or you can cherish his memory & let it live on.
You can cry & close your mind, be empty & turn your back,
Or you can do what he'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Hugs and Blessings

God's Lent Child
I'll lend you for a little while a child of mine, God said,
For you to love him while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years, or forty-two or three;
But will you, till I call him back, take good care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll have the lovely memories as a solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return;
But there are lessons taught below I want this child to learn.
I've searched the whole world over, for teachers kind and true;
And from the throngs that crowd life's lane I have chosen you...
Now will you give him all your love? Nor think the labor pain?
Nor hate me should the angels call, to take this child back again?
To which the parents did reply...
Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joys thy child will bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may...
for all the love this child will bring,
forever grateful we will stay.
But should the Angels call for him,
much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.

I would like to say something you said that you wished Jace would have gotten the chance to grow up and so do many, but I believe that Jace lived a full life in the short amount of time that he was here on Earth with us. He lived life to the fullest with a bright smile, I didn't really know him and I know that much! :) I realized that with losing Tyler and seeing Jace that life is short and theres were, but I didn't hear them complain and I always saw a bright smile on their faces! They lived the life God gave them to the fullest and I pray that each and everyone else that was touched by them will do the same! :) I pray for your family and that you will all be blessed this year! :)

The pictures of Jace and the stories you have shared

heart. I often think of him and smile. What a great gift
he has shared.

Please know that I am thinking about you during this holday season. I would like to share this special prayer with you.

Dear Father who art in Heaven...
Please join our family on this Thanksgiving day
And bless each one as we sit down to pray
As we remember those who have joined You above
So dearly missed and deeply loved.

Please provide us strength on this Thanksgiving day
Bless us with memories of those faraway...
Please grant patience to family and friends as we grieve
And help us reach out to others who are bereaved.

We give thanks to You on this Thanksgiving day....
For Your presence in our lives each and everyday.
For Your comfort, guidance, and never ending love...
And for taking care of our loved ones...in Heaven above.

As we light this candle on this Thanksgiving day...
And it glows in memory of those in Heaven today....
May their lights always shine down on us and give us light...
And may we feel their presence along with Yours tonight.

May the peace and tranquility of this Thanksgiving day
Be an everlasting light within each of us along the way...
Lets bow our heads and give our Thanks to God above..
For our blessings, whether on earth or in Heaven above...
Amen

Thanks for updating as I think of you guys often. I wish you the very best in your move and Ankeny is such a great little place to be. We love visiting my aunts and uncles up there!
Although we haven't had to visit Rochester near as much as we used to, your family (especially Jace) is always on my mind when we are there. Although my boys don't have cancer they often endure some of the same stuff with the ports, and lines and infections, etc and spend way too many days in the hospital. I find such joy in reading your old postings about "fun" things you did while Jace was in the hospital and try to remember those things to do for my boys when we are there.

This big, black, ugly boot on my foot is just one more reminder of how Jace is still influencing--how can I complain or feel sorry for myself with such a little inconvenience when Jace was such a warrior? The answer is I can't.

Jace will go right along with you on this new adventure your family is taking as your rock! He loves adventure:)

You are not forgotten. Each day I pass by my picture of Jenna & Jace in my dining room, the one of them taken at Okoboji, the summer we met. My heart breaks when I think I was not the friend you needed because I know the emptiness you feel. Our Jenny's 19th birthday was the the 21st. It does not go away. Sometimes sadness, sometimes jealousy. But I will tell you this, there is comfort in knowing she shares heaven with Jace. They are friends there in an incredible place where there is a party every day and they know nothing but peace and incredible happiness. I also know he wants that for you.

Well I hadn't heard that you were going to move. Know that I will always pray for you guys. Jace touched me in a way I will never be able to forget. I was thrilled when Travis played at Mass a couple of weeks ago, and was hoping we would get to enjoy him more. But you have to do and go where you feel led to go. May God continue to hold you and bless you. Hugs from Osky,

I have moved over 30 times in my life and one thing I can truly say...Home is where your heart is...family. The house is just a structure that holds your heart. You create your home with love and create memories. God be with you during this transitional time...may his love hold you up....Leslie

Hi,
Thanks for keeping Douglas in your thoughts. Since I have known about Jace from a co-worker from the Des Moines office of my former employer, there has not been a day that I have not thought about Jace. Sometimes it is passing a McDonalds or watching Doug play his Nintendo DS or Super Mario Pajamas at Walmart. I wonder what his favorite meal was at the Canadian Honker. I always get this sick feeling in my stomach as we pull off the interstate and head into Rochester and see the smoke coming off the tops of the Mayo buildings. I wonder when we get to the 16th floor and we wait ito see Dr Wetmore in that peaceful new wating area on the peds floor if this is where you sat with Jace before you found out about the spot on his MRI and what that finally became. I always think about Jace. I will never stop thinking about him.

It was so nice to see an update today. I still stop be very often, glancing at the pictures and borders to see if there might be an update. It was nice to see the hearts to know there was a new update. I still have some pictures of Jace in a couple of my school files. I came across them this week and thought maybe there is somewhere else I should keep them, but I decided to leave them where they were knowing I would see them at least once a year. They always put a pain in my heart, but also a smile on my face as I remember what a joy he was to have in class and what a wonderful family you were to work with.
I am sure it will be a tough move for you, but have no fear Jenna will do great. I know when we moved with our kids I was very worried about our kids, but they adjusted faster than I did :). Jenna has been through so much, this move will be a new chapter, but I have no doubt that she will handle it well.
God Bless, and thanks for the update.

We were scrapbooking the other day and found a handmade birthday card from Jace to Gage. He said it was too special to be stuck in his book and put it in his "treasure box" which is reserved for only the best things...ball player autographs, cool baseball cards and such. We got our shirts this morning and they are pretty cool...minus the horrible black and gold one McKensie wanted:) Praying for you and yours...Ross and Carrie Van Gorp

Just wanted to let you know that I was thinking of you & checked in to see how you were doing. I also prayed for you as you approached the 1 year anniversary last month and again as school started back for your daughter. Those days are tough reminders that time keeps moving on. I like to remind myself each day when I wake up that I'm just one day closer to being reunited with Christ and my precious daughter. Hang in there!

They sure do stink in a BIG way. I never thought about leaving a note for intruders when we go on vacation, but the possibility of a break-in has occurred to me when we are pulling out the drive. I like Jace's idea of giving them a bit of truth. Jace did have the wisdom of a wise old man. Missing him.

Tara and Travis,
and Jen :) (by the way Jenna I NEED your typing skills again!)
I have been away from my computer and also haven't checked this site for a while. Me being away for your 'first' Aug.19, 2009 was sad but probably being here with you would have been sadder.(I'm a wuss) I know a year ago- being with you on Aug.19, 2008 was a feeling of despair I have never felt before, I witnessed a couple 'firsts' - 'losing someone' I felt VERY close to and then eating a Big Mac for the 'first' time on the way home. : ( I just hope and pray the pain that I know is in your hearts will somehow, someday, be a little less. As a mom, and as a very good buddy of Jace, I can't imagine how and when that will happen and it is something I struggle with everyday for you and for myself I guess. I read your posts and can't imagine how you get through the day. I do know that Jace is happier and better off than we are, and I do know that you have the most darling daughter in the world! I wish I could do more but God knows best? I guess, so I am holding on to that and hoping for your family to have blessings beyond measure!!!!
Love you guys.......
Missing Jace's furry little cowlick in the back of his head................: ( and cherishing those memories that you allowed me to have with him!!!
(by the way thanks for letting me spoil him- I know it had to be annoying at times??)

I thought about Jace today as I was driving to work before I even remembered what the date was. The song, "I can only imagine" was on the radio. I'm sure he's living a perfect life now in heaven and keeping a close eye on his wonderful family below.

My heart still breaks that you do not have your little guy here with you. I'm sure the pain is unimaginable and I'm truly saddened that you have to live with that. I pray for peace and comfort for you and signs of Jace surrounding you with his love.

Zach still talks about Jace's Hanna Montana drum solo that we were lucky enough to witness in person and how good it was, he brought it up the other night just out of the blue. Jace definitely lives on in so many great memories!

Take care.

I couldn't help but think of Jace on Friday.
Sponge Bob's birthday. Sponge Bob turned 10...
not a coincident that he too was born in 1999!!!
It makes me smile to read about Jace and his
love of the tiny Sponge that lives in a pineapple...
Hollister always called him "cheese Bob" much to Harrison's
dismay!!! "Cheese Bob square pants...."
So, I along with Mr. Jace...love the Sponge Bob...
Always makes me smile!

That playground is awesome! I think it is perfect!
The rock with the plaque of Jace is great. I love reading
it...What a happy place.
We wanted so badly to come for the race, it just didn't work for us.
We need to get down there to see the park in
person. I believe I owe you all some of my award winning
scotch-a-roos.....we can eat them and Honor Jace!

Just thought I would let you in on something that Braden said to me as we visited the playground for the first time. He stood there reading the plaque and then came over to me and said, " Mom, I know why they put that sign on the rock." I asked him, "Why?" He answered, " Because Jace was very strong when he was fighting the cancer just like the rock is very strong." It brought tears to my eyes but I had to agree with him. Thanks for the wonderful playground. We have really enjoyed it!

Just wanted to let you know how much the kids are enjoying the playground! Friday when it rained the kids called me to pick them up and I found them "hiding" in the treehouse part. Who knew it would be used like that?!? Guess the kiddies of New Sharon have Jace as a guardian angel in more than one way:) It is a beautiful area for all of them and a safe spot for them to hang out. Thanks for giving such a wonderful gift from Jace!
Praying for you and yours...Carrie Van Gorp

The playground turned out awesome! All 3 of my boys gave it a big thumbs up and Ben said, "Look mom there is even a creature in the middle of it!" I love the plaque and what it says - what a wonderful tribute to such a special boy! You guys did a great job with all of it.

Happy Birthday, Jenna! It must be so hard not having your brother, but he wants nothing more than seeing you happy, laughing and celebrating your birthday! He loves your laughter! No doubt he is laughing right there with you!

Thanks for sharing the video! It was a trip meant to be! It made me think about when we went to Colorado on our family vacation....just a couple weeks after returning, Mason was Dx with cancer.
I hadnt checked in on your page in a while otherwise we could of came this weekend........Shucks. Asia is getting very excited for camp. We definatly have to let the girls get together more than just once a year.
Hope this finds you doing as well as to be expected. Think about you guys often.

Thanks for letting me help you with parts of the Jace Race and the playground. Your generosity to honor Jace and the community is miraculous! Today as I sat by the pool I could see kids playing on the playground and right in my line of vision was his awesome plaque! Just as Phil said yesterday, it was bitter sweet... The sweetest part was some of the kids would stop & read his plaque and then go play. I love you guys!!!

What a beautiful slide show...what a beautiful boy. We recieved your thank-you today (not needed by the way) and your thoughts mirrored Gage's. The first thing he said when he got home was "Mom, Jace will love it!". As plain as plain can be. He will love it. I know that none of the other boys think of him as gone...just here in a different way. Keeping you & yours in our prayers...Ross & Carrie Van Gorp

I was so blessed to be apart of Jace's life at the pool. Him learning how to swim, and scaring his Mother because he showed no fear in the deep end. He was a great kid and will always be in my memories of the pool and being his lifeguard. I know it is a God thing that the pool is opening this weekend the playground is going up. I found this today and wanted to share in honor of Jace. Praying for comfort and support, especially this week.

Letter from Heaven~
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on. I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight. God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er. I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; but together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too... that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain, then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain." And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free, remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As you know, cause I've already told you... I'm praying for you and thinking of you, especially today, but then again everyday! I've checked this site alot within the last few years... but especially this last year... Becca even knows how to access it. In fact the night of the visitation we were all talking in the kitchen and all of the sudden we heard this same video clip you reposted today... and through the tears it seemed to comfort her, to hear his AWESOME drumming, hear his voice, and the most comforting... see his smile ;) Boy do we miss that smile... Thanks for sharing it today... Love you lots...always & always!!!

Wow! That last pic is amazing. Looks normal as any kid to me. Makes me sad to think i procrastinated all day and was 'too' busy to bring over some balloons for the party that day! I'm glad you ARE the best mom ever and came up and got those darn balloons! You guys did everything right that day. He was sooo excited and so adamant about everything being just perfect! God works in mysterious ways.........even through your 9 year old boy. I will be forever praying that the holes in your hearts will somehow scar over and the memories will be healing for you!
Love always

It isn't possible to look at the picture of Jace at his last birthday party and not believe in miracles. Even though you didn't get the miracle that we all prayed for, the fact that he has such a twinkle in his eyes, just one week before Jesus called him home should make a believer out of anyone! He truly lived life to it's fullest, right up to the very last minute. What a miracle! He taught so many, so much! Thanks again for sharing your precious little buddy!

I just checked in on your site for the week and WOW! You took my breath away! I loved seeing new pictures of Jace but I can't describe the feeling when I came across the one of him and Dad...two true angels. Weren't we lucky to have such wonderful men in our lives? Maybe blessed is a better choice of words. I smile when I think of the two of them in Heaven having coffee time together. It may sound silly but it helps me get through the day. And the days on earth will be short compared to eternity in Heaven when we can all have coffee time together (do you think they have Dutch letters up there?.
Thanks for comforting me today. I hope to return the favor soon.

I will NEVER stop thinking of all of you and you will ALWAYS be in my prayers. For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim reflection, but we shall see in reality and face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God. 1 Corinthians

Hi Carrico's!

Just writing a quickie to let you know Jace is still alive in our hearts and home. We got a new flavor of handsoap for Christmas. I almost feel like we're cheating on him when we use it but then again...I don't want to use his favorite smell because it's something that should be treasured and not taken for granted. Isn't it funny what silly things we think of daily? Sadness is so confusing. I'm so glad Jace made us smile so much.

We love you.

With Jacer's birthday only a month away our family has been trying to decided on something that we could do in honor of his precious life. Many years I can remember giant coloring books and new markers in which he'd graciously allow us to color with him. Most of which took place in the hospital. I think that the upcoming Honor Walk would be a great idea! We can't imagine the loneliness these cold Iowa nights are at your house without Jace and his "B" snuggled up next you. We pray that as you face each new day that you find something in which to hold on to hope with. Love you all! ;-)

Hello to everyone and we want to wish a wonderful New Year as we don't know what mysteries it will hold, but I am sure Jace is looking down on all of you and wishing you well and to be happy as he is being an Angel of God. Day by day it gets a little easier even though the holidays are hard. I (Peggy) lost my mom this year the end of October and my sister 1 year ago on Dec. 13 along with my cousin Dec.29, 2008 so it has been something. Just feel the love from family and friends and we will all get through it together. God bless you all. Karl and peggy
