I just wanted to share with you what has happened with our Ryan, God never ceases to amaze us!!!! Ryan has been on IV antibiotics for a couple of weeks , his lung function had dropped by about 15o they wanted to treat him. We came home from the hospital to do the IVs like we always do. On Monday morning out of the blue his mediport would not flush after his antibiotic went in, it was very all of a sudden. We have never once in 3 years had a problem with this port. I tried several times, and then took out his needle and tried to put a new one in, no luck, it was completely blocked. I called Dwight at work so that we could take him to the All Children's emergency room so the IV team could work on it. Unfortunately his second antibiotic was very late at this point so we were unable to give it to him because of his allergies, we lost the affect of him being previously desensitized to the antibiotic. The IV team worked on his port for several hours, and were unable to fix the blockage, we were discharged from the ER and instructed to follow up with the surgeon for a port replacement. I had worked with the head of the IV team for several years so she said that if I wanted to leave the medicine in the port that may help to unblock it I could, but it is really ineffective after 2 hours. I said ok, we went to the pulmonology clinic to decide what to do with Ryan, he still needed treatment for his infection. After a couple of hours there I still could not flush the port at all, we were very discouraged about having to put Ryan through another surgery, but he has to have a mediport for his antibiotics. I spoke with my very best friend and she said Pam it is going to work, I have called everyone to pray, I told her that I was getting ready to take out his needle and we were seeing the surgeon this week, she said to pray again.. I did. Before I took the needle out, Dwight said try flushing the port one more time, I could not believe it, I was able to get blood from it then it flushed through. I was blown away by this, the medicine in the port is TPA, it is the same medicine they give stroke patients to disolve clots in the brain. I have used it many times on my own patients at work and have never seen it work like this after 6 hours, usually it works after 2 or it doesn't work at all. Truly another blessing, God has it all under control!!!!! Pam
