Diagnosed: October 16, 2002
Remission: November 16, 2002

My Poem:

It started with a cough,
And maybe a bruise.
Who would have thought,
a tumor would've grew?

Slowly growing,
cutting oxygen supply.
Killing me softly,
Hoping I would die.

Breathing tube now,
the size of a straw.
Cancer still growing,
Nobody saw.

"Go to hospital,
get some tests done."

Leukemia the diagnosis,
before the days done.

My Story:

I had been asking my mom for almost 2 years if I could get my belly button peirced. She had always said "on your 15th birthday you can get it done." I was getting really excited because it was the 12th of October and my birthday was only 9 days away.
For several weeks prior to this I had been feeling a little under the weather, nothing I couldn't handle. I had a 3.5 GPA, (surprising, since I slept through most of my classes) and I was going to cheerleading 4 days a week. I had no problems, except for that cough and bruiseing that just wouldn't seem to go away.
On Sunday, October 14th, 2002 my mom said yes to me finally having my belly button peirced, but I had to go to my pediatrician and see what the cough was and find out why I was still bruising. (Since we had been there several times and they diagnosed me with chronic bronchitis and possible enimia)
Something must have clicked in my pediatrician's head because he told me and my step-father that I needed to go IMMEDIATELY to All Children's Hospital and have some blood work and x-rays done in the ER.
After arriving and waiting for 4 hours in the emergency room, I was finally called back to a room where they ran tests and took x-rays. By 6 p.m. we were starting to get worried. The attending resident told me that I was looking possibly at a rare form of pnemonia and I needed to call my mom and have her come down to the hospital with some p.j.'s because they were going to keep me over night.
When my mom arrived at the hospital she and my step-dad were immediatly told that the ER Physician wanted to see them and speak with them. From that point I knew something wasn't right...
Mary-Ana (a child life therapist) came to me and asked me if I knew what white cells were. I said, "Yes, they are the cells that fight infection in your blood." She said, "Good, now do you know what a normal white count is?"
"No."
"Well, it ranges from about 4-11. You have a white count of 196"
"So I must have a REALLY big infection!" I giggled when I said it, and so did she. Only her giggle was more of the type you hear when you are trying to keep someone from being scared of the truth.
The doctor and my parents entered the room again. My mom looked like she was going to pass out, and my step-dad looked as though he had seen a ghost. The doctor looked at me with one of those "I wish I wasn't the messenger" looks.
"Miranda, you have something called Leukemia."
"HA! AND YOU HAVE THE WRONG ROOM!" I told him in disbelief. In the end, he did in fact have the right room and I did infact have leukemia. That was the point where I told myself that I will NOT give up and I WILL beat this. To this day no matter what I am still keeping that as my catch-phrase.

Happy New Year everyone! We have good news about mom, we finally found out why mom had her stroke. It was because she has factor 5 deficancy, the blood disorder that her and i both have. I'm so glad that we finally know what caused it. I am also glad to know signs that i need to watch out for when i get older. Sucks that it had to happen to mom though. Im doing great, and the last i heard was that mom is comming home on tuesday so thats good.
