Kate was diagnosed with Bilateral Wilm’s Tumor (kidney cancer), stage IV, no metastasis, on June 13, 1996. She had just celebrated her 2nd birthday that April. As so often is the case, her pediatrician was the one to discover the tumors in her stomach during a physical exam.
We embarked on a journey that our family and friends couldn't imagine, yet they were our unending source of strength and encouragement. We're still on that journey today . . . our daughter is a cancer survivor.
Kate had her right kidney and a portion of her left kidney removed in December of 1996. She fully recovered from her surgery and her remaining kidney has been working well. She had her last chemotherapy treatment on February 28, 1997. We celebrate that day as her “cure day.” We just celebrated her 7th year.
Kate is almost 10 now. She is an active, vivacious and loving child. She doesn’t remember very much about her ordeal, which is a blessing. Yet, she is very aware of how precious the gift of her life is and that awareness seems to radiate from her.
She shares her story with people she meets. She wears her scars proudly and is always happy to have the opportunity to tell someone “Did you know that I’m a cancer survivor? I had kidney cancer when I was two, but I was healed.”
Kate’s not just a survivor, she’s a thriver!

Kate celebrated her 13th birthday on April 7, 2007! Life is no longer focused on her cancer and for that we are very grateful. Instead, Kate focuses on each day as a gift to be enjoyed and not taken for granted.
She is a true joy and a powerful testimony for the healing power of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
