Sandy Craine

I have created this page so you can follow my progress during my stem cell transplant at Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK. This form of transplant uses low intensity chemotherapy to suppress the immune system in readiness to accept the donor stem cells. TBI (total body irradiation)is not used.
I would like to thank my fellow CML friends thoughout the world for their willingness to share knowledge and support over the last few years.
I could not have considered this transplant if it had not been for the fact that I have a matched sibling donor, namely my 'little' brother Jamie, much love and eternal thanks.
I am so grateful to my parents, Georgina and Jim, for always supporting and encouraging me in everything that I have done and I send my deep love and devotion to David and our beautiful daughter Nina. Their support and love has given me the strength to survive.

WELL .... LOOKS LIKE MY DOCTOR WAS RIGHT!!!
I NOW have the BEST POSSIBLE news to share... my last 3 pcr results are all TOTALLY NEGATIVE for bcr/abl and show that i have responded to the 4th DLI of 50 million donor lymphocytes.

my doctor is (almost) as pleased as i am.
i am not sure what else to say other than i am extremely happy and will be celebrating for the rest of my life.

when i was diagnosed, over 8 years ago, i never dared hope that i would one day be CML free, PH negative, even 'CURED'....! although i still hesitate to use that word!
i am glad to be able to share this with all of you.

the new methods of transplantation (reduced intensity or mini-allograft)which use TKI'S (Glivec) to suppress the cml cells until it is safe to use Donor Lymphocyte Infusion (12 months post transplant) is an exciting and significant move forward.

my doctors study will be published in september 2007 and i understand from him that the results of the study are extremely good. it is of particular significance that although i had a Glivec resistant mutation, i still responded, post transplant, to Glivec for a second time.
i believe there were 2 other people on this study that had mutations pre- transplant who, like me, have fully responded to this very clever combination therapy.

i will not be updating this diary unless i have something really significant to report.... but i am feeling very confident and don't expect i will have anthing other than good news.
i have really appreciated all of your kind and supportive messages over the years that i have been keeping this diary. i send all of you my very best wishes for a peaceful and healthy life.

love, Sandy
