Three years after transplant with the grandchildren I thought I would never see !
I was diagnosed with CML in February 1999 and was very lucky to achieve a complete cytogenetic response after treatment with a revolutionary therapy known as Glivec. I maintained my remission until March 2004, when my doctors found I had developed a secondary disease thought to be a form of Myelodysplasia which is unrelated to CML. My doctors were surprised by this development and I was monitored carefully during 2004. Unfortunately, in January 2005, the MDS developed into secondary Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and I was admitted to hospital for urgent chemotherapy. This diary follows my journey to eliminate both CML and MDS sAML.
Journal
Saturday, May 17, 2008 5:44 AM CDT Hello everyone I thought this was a fitting day for making an entry on my journal as today is my 3yr anniversary post transplant. Thank you Eduardo and HH - I have had a fairly trouble free 3 years, bit of gvhd after DLI but after that everything has gone very much according to plan. I am so lucky and on this day I remember all those wonderful friends I made along my CML journey who are no longer with us and sadly missed. Although no longer active on CML Support, I am still very much involved with CML patients and have started an on site support group at Hammersmith with the help of Carol Davies and the HH support nurses and consultants. So far the group has been very successful and we hope will go on to expand and help those who need it. It does not only cater for CML but for all with leukaemia, mds etc. we are a support group to offer help and support in dealing with this disease and coping with the impact on the families.
I have two grandchildren [and one step grandaughter] who are the main focus of my life and I care for them whilst my daughter and her husband work full time. This brings me many joys and I feel so grateful that I am still alive and well and able to look after them. I will update the photos with a recent one of Steve and I with the grandchildren. My mother and sister are arriving in the UK tomorrow and on Wednesday we are off on a cruise to Madeira and the Canaries. Without my mother I would not be here today as you all know she was my donor. It is going to be truly wonderful to spend time with my Mum and my sister on a fun trip.
Have a good summer all of you out there and hope that everything is going smoothly for you. With love and best wishes Elizabeth
