TO JULIEN There are no words to soften such a loss. All that survives of you, beloved boy, Is gratitude that you were here with us, And the overflowing memories of joy; For even as we grieve, we revel in Your radiance and fearlessness and mirth, Now warmly bosomed in oblivion, To sleep forever in the sacred earth. --Robert Mezey

Friday, May 6, 2005 7:55 PM CDT As Matt mentioned this morning, our beautiful and expressive daughter arrived yesterday evening, at 5:30 pm on 5/5/05. I screamed at the top of my lungs until she popped out (no epidural), and she screamed at the top of hers once she arrived (and kept it up for nearly an hour).
Her name is Lucia Elizabeth Paul Mezey and we will call her Lucy. Her first name was chosen by Jake. He told us, "My favorite name for her is Lucy, but Lucy is a little plain, so that can be her nickname. Her actual name should be Lucia." Well, why not, especially for our Cinco de Mayo baby. Her middle name is for the poet Elizabeth Bishop, whose poems, which are concerned with place, maps, travel, geography--the ways we order the world in our search for a sense of self and home in the face of the challenges of loss, longing, and displacement, are among my very favorites.
We came home from the hospital this evening and we are both doing great: exhausted but happy to be home with Matt, Jake, Roxie and a wonderful, steady stream of grandparents. We'll try and post some pictures this weekend. Matt insisted that we all wear sombreros in the delivery room, so the photos should be amusing.
Thank you all so much for your warm wishes and excitement for us. It makes us feel even luckier than we do already.
