Alison,
I am sending extra prayers you way this week, esp. Martin. I know how the world can just bear down on you some times and an extra prayer or two can't hurt.

I hope Andrew is feeling better soon. It is always a worry when the kids get sick, but even more so when they have extra issues to deal with.

Hooray to Melissa! Wow, she is an amazing girl! Sounds like she has an amazing future ahead of her.

Now, Alison, you talk care of yourself, too. Moms need a little rest now and then. Please know that I will be thinking of you.

Thank you so much for special prayers for Benji! God is working His miracles daily since Benji left the PICU. Know that we are always thinking of you, and refer to Andrew often as Benji's companion in this struggle. Sometimes, even at Hopkins, there are physician's that are in disbelief that something so devastating and UNKNOWN exists in not one, but at least two other children. I know it sounds awful, but it is comforting to know that at least someone knows what we are going through. Knowing that you will ultimately lose your child to an unknown illness, does not make confronting the reality of it any easier. Benji and I have made it through this week on prayer alone. Alison, thanks so much for sharing your family with us!!!!
Love to all,

Penny (Benji's mommy)

Hi, Alison
We certainly will pray for both Benji and for Andrew.
We have been unsuccessful in conveying our condolences directly to Benji's page, because the direct link is inoperative and cutting and pasting to Google was rejected by Google.

Glad Andrew is doing better. I will try to catch you by e-mail soon to let you know how it went at Mayo. I still want to talk with you about the Valium more as the doc there said they don't use it to treat dysautonomias. Our doc here in Atlanta however has a patient on it. Our big news is that Seattle will list Brody for transplant next week-(without a stomach however). This is what the doc there feels is in Brody's best interest.

UGH. I sure remember doing meds ALL the time, literally from one to the next to the next and having to have everything written down so something is not forgotten, so out of the typical routine... I even had to have Scott drawing things up so things would not be given late.. ugh
We are sure praying for Andrew that this bug would be killed quickly and he would not lose this line.

Praying for Andrew to continue to improve and beat the germs that wear him down. The new plan sounds like a winner with being able to draw labs there and start the medicines asap. We completely understand how important that time is that is normally spent "waiting" on results to come in not to mention the struggle and discomforts of transporting about otherwise.
Praises for the news of added nursing hour coverage. Prayers that the staffing will not be a problem and that the help will be there when you need it the most.

Many thoughts and continued prayers for you all, friend! Though the journey's are different I understand the daily strength it takes to travel the paths.

Alison - Thanks so much for your thoughts and the update. So true to how life seems and a great reminder of how to pray day-to-day for you all. Absolutely enjoyed the story of the walk to the park which blessed my day with a chuckle and watery-eyes as I contemplated that funny but precious walk!
Thank you! Wendy

Our prayers will continue as you journey through life and face so many challenges with your sweet spirit and that of Martin and all your children. I suspect all of you have grown in the Spirit, though may not always recognize it. We Scanlans love the Boettchers so much, and your lamp reminds us of how blessed we are too. Thank you once again for your honesty, and we pray the right choices are made as each decision is made around your lives. What a lovely varied set of photos that Melissa and Andrew brought home to you and the privilege of 'smelling the roses' moments. It's a precious reminder that we need to do the same. Thank you for sharing such moments with us. Hugs and love,

Hey Alison,

Sorry to hear that Andrew's site infection returned. Antibiotics every 6 hours....what a treat!!!! As you know we deal with some of the same challenging behaviors. I too struggle with needing more patience, but you are so right in that ultimately what matters is that we accept them for who they are!!! We enjoyed meeting you all in Seattle. Maybe we will see you there again in the near future.

Take care from your Georgia friends,

You are all in our prayers, and especially for your continued patience when observing Andrew and his bags of 'stuff', and more so as he prepares for school.

Kudos to all of you as you pursue your own individual activities, and well done to you all. Great idea for Melissa, and I pray the money will come through!

Such a good overview of how much needs to be done and kept track of in a day and helps to have a perspective of your lives. It's true that most of us without nursing knowledge would not stop to think how much work each machine/medication requires! Good to catch up on your busy kids. Praying the skin infection responds quickly and completely to the iv med.

Hello Alison et al:

We, Scanlans, are praying earnestly that Andrew has enough defences to cope with this latest bug. How exhausting all this must be especially when the others get it too.

Way to go, Melissa; where do you find those resources? What incredible talent! Most of us take days to recover from these bugs even after the signs and symptoms have vanished; what a trooper you are!

We love your messages and they give us hope and put our own problems into prospectus. We love you all xxxxxx, and a hug to our four legged one too.

Not sure if this could be part of the problem, but have they checked Andrew's electrolytes? Sometimes a low potassium and/or magnesium level can cause pain, particularly muscle spasms. May be worth looking into. We continue to keep Andrew in our prayers!

Hi guys! Sorry to hear about Andrew's eye. I bet he can't wait for those glasses to come in. I hope his cold is getting better. I dread this time of year, and the months that come (go away germs!). Alison,
I am so sorry to hear that the eye injury has caused permanent damage to Andrew's eye. I know that it is another thing that he now has to learn to deal with on top of everything else and it sure doesn't seem fair. I hope the new glasses come in soon so he can get those driver's license back for his power wheelchair. Be sure to post a picture of his new look with glasses when you can. I know he will be as handsome as ever.

I am so delighted you have your own 'retreat' area where you can sew/quilt to your hearts content without having to clear it away until you've finished.

Hello to all the family. So glad to hear that the surgery went smoothly, and that everyone is doing as well as possible this summer. This latest heat wave seems to be over as of this morning, so hopefully Andrew had been managing okay.

And Alison - in answer to your question - the pool in the photo was Second Beach Pool. Of course, it is now closed due to the strike, but maybe we'll see you all there one day!

All our best always...
