Hi guys.....Well sounds like things are going "good" up there with Adam. He sure is a handsome young man. We have had you on our minds and just wanted to let you know that we are thinking of you. We are doin....I don't know what else to say. Things are not the same here without Carson. We are all changed people. Sometimes we wish we were still in Calgary at ACH or RMH going through the days. But it was not ment to be. Stay in touch.

Hi Adam, I didn't get a chance to be at Sear's for your speech but Grandma gave me a copy of it and she said you did great. I read the speech, wow, is all I can say. Glad you're doing well and that you had fun in Anaheim.

Suzanne,

You might not remember me, but my son Matt also had a BMT for CML...we have signed each others guestbooks/traded emails, but not in a long while. Boring is good, right!

So glad to see Adam continuing to do well. Matt also takes synthroid (has for about a year now). We just passed his 5 year anniversary from transplant and have been once again blessed with good results from his PCR testing. On the synthroid...it's a small pill, so easy to take and Matt has never had any side effects from taking it. We are now facing some real obvious height slow down, so are checking for deficiency of growth hormone (Matt is 11). We have been seeing an endocrinologist for the last 2 years.

If I can help by sharing any info. with you, I would be happy to. Wishing you all the best and continued health.

Dear Adam,

Glad to hear your good news! My son Timmy has CML at age 11, and I found your mom on the CML Hope website. Thanks for sharing your story with us! It is very encouraging to hear another boy going through the same things as Timmy and that you are doing great!

We are on vacation right now, we're in North Carolina!! The temp is 100F and the ocean water is like bath water. We spend a lot of time in Canada, and we love going to see the Blue Jays when we are in Toronto. Usually we go when they play the Yankees, Timmy is a big fan, and when they play the Red Sox, I am a huge fan!!

Timmy is still on Gleevec, but we may opt for the bone marrow transplant as you did.

Hope you are ready to go back to school! Timmy starts one week from today, and we are not ready to go back.

Hope you enjoy your last days of freedom. We are thinking of you and praying that you get your appetite back, and weigh in plus 10 at your next visit to the docs.

Wow I am the first since the update. Yahoo!!!! and Yes I am one of those that constantly checks the site to keep up with the news. That is fantastic news Adam. I hope you are soon off all the meds. Keep working at putting on some pounds though otherwise you may end up back in a car seat (magic numbers are Age 8 and 80 pounds). Just kidding!! Christopher and you both have the same thing in common. You meet one criteria but not the other.

Still checking in on Adam and I'm always so happy to see things are moving in the right direction. Wishing him the best as he keeps moving toward the finish line, though, I'm not sure sometimes if there ever is really a 'finish line'...as long as he keeps feeling good, is happy and the CML stays away, I suppose that is most important.

yes Suzanne i do check the web still on a regular basis even though i know how well Adam is doing, it just got to be such a habit for me and i am a habit type of person.

Yes 2 years ago for the transplant and i can't believe two years ago i went on my Alaska journey alot has happened since then, the best thing of all is that Adams journey has not always been great but for now he is doing so well, and that is just such a great thing.

Adam i think of you every day as your photo and my medal are in my office as a constant reminder of what we both went through, and just so you know Aunti loves you very much.

Dear Suzanne,

I got your last mail on the GvHD mailing list and would like to wish you and your sun all the best.
I myself struggle with cGvHD for a while now after 18 months of transplantation. I am 40 years old and have two daughters that still need their dad. I do not know where it ends and thoughts about death are present regulary.
I myself found out that too many bad thoughts are not helpfull and that's why I believe that children have the best chance to go through this.

Please try to enjoy every day even if it is quite hard.

My best wishes for you, your son and your family.

We all find out soon, that once you hit that brick wall it becomes a roller coaster ride, even before transplant. Still keeping an eye on things with Adam...Glad to see the last couple of weeks have stayed uneventful, just the way we like it...BORING. I'll keep my fingers crossed with the prednisone taper and pray the GVH burns itself out.

I know what you mean about Adam not feeling photogenic. Matt looked a little 'funky' after being on the cyclosporine for a while and DOES NOT like to look at pictures from those days. Thank God they are long gone (we pray) and Matt is proof that you get your look back!!

I read the whole diary, beginning to end. It has really helped me with what to expect. I was diagnosed a week ago and put on Gleevec. I have a lot of questions because the diary started after Adam had finished with Gleevec. While he was on it, was he able to go to school? What types of side effects did he have? What pushed him off and make the doctors decide that a BMT was needed? Thank you so much. I am 16 and in 11th grade, I'm so scared because I do not know what to expect. Any information would be so welcome.. Thank you in advance.

Hello ,

I am Sinan from Turkey but I study in RI , USA. I am 19 years old. I had CML also. I don't know how you are feeling now , but when I learned that I had CML I was really sad until a lovely angel ( which I am sure there are plenty surrounding you and waiting for you to talk to them. And I am not joking or trying to make you feel better. What I say is 100 % true ! :) ) told me that serious ilnnesses such as Leukemia , are nothing but different classes in the University of Life. So when I thought it that way , all the sadness had disappeared and CML process became an adventureous and sometimes a difficult class for me. As far as I concerned, my sixth sense is really strong and when I think about you all I can see is you, with your wife your lovely children and I can assure you that when you are older , CML would be nothing but a difficult class that you passed with the highest grade availible. Warmest wishes.

Don't worry about the cheeks Adam as some of us have big cheeks and we don't take prednisone. I looked at the pictures of you with the Flames, that must have been very exciting. Glad to hear the tests came back negative. Keeping our fingers crossed that the GHV leaves your tongue alone, Adam. By the sounds of your marks you have still accomplished a lot and should be proud of yourself considering the hurdles you have been over the last 10 months. Keep up the studying Adam and don't let go of your dreams. You will become an honor student again if you work at it.

Hi guys, Just wanted you all to know that you have been on our minds and in our prayers. We too hope that we will never have to see the new ACH, but it is nice to know that they are building a new one just in case. We are all doing good. Carson is full of life and a true joy. Once again, we can not thank you guys enough for the wonderful support you were to us when Carson was first diagnosed. We are grateful for the opportunity we have had to meet you all. Take good care of yourselves and eachother.

Dear Verheydes,

Thanks for adding Tom to your prayers. He is in Minneapolis again, but this is so that he can have his PICC line removed and a Porta Cath put in. Sounds like things are going very well for Adam. Tom was to start homebound instruction a week and a half ago but his trips to the hospital have prevented this. He is with Adam on the school page - he says, "No hurry to start, Mom." I really hope Adam gets to get on that snowboard this winter.

Adam,
What another important milestone...getting that line out. I know it must feel so good to be rid of it. I think it was one of the most important steps towards normalcy...next, no meds and back to school.

Suzanne,
I am praying hard that the bone marrow results are good and that your career as a 'home school teacher' is officially over.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Suzanne,

Just getting caught up on Adam's progress. Awesome news on the 3 log reduction...and just to reaffirm, when Matt had his transplant, we were told many times by different doctors that the PCR test didn't mean anything until 6 mos. post transplant. In fact, Matt tested positive on all his bcr/abl tests by PCR until we got to the 6 mos. mark...then, music to my ears...Undetectable. Hang in there...slow and steady wins the race.

As for the setback with the appetite...I'm thinking those ribs just may do the trick. Matthew loves ribs too! We buy the Lloyds ribs in the grocery store that are pre-cooked and just through them on the grill...very easy and tasty. As for always being on him about the food...I felt that way for a long time. But remember, this is a delicate time and it won't be like this forever. Do what you have to do to keep him hydrated and nourished...soon enough, it won't take up nearly as much energy.

Good news about weaning off the meds. I think that will make a big difference in his appetite. Praying for smooth sailing for the rest of the summer.

Hi Adam,
I have an 11 year old son who had a bone marrow transplant about three weeks ago. I found your website from a link your mom put on the bone marrow talk list. Its so great to hear how well you are doing! I hope you have a fantastic summer. There are lots of fun things to do away from the crowds when the weather is nice. We'll keep checking your site for encouragement about how much better life is the further you get from transplant. You've probably heard this before, but it takes a lot of strength and a strong will to get through all the transplant stuff. Way to go!

A little note from your Aunty Lynn out of Regina.....
We have tried to keep up with your guest book. You are quite popular over the last couple of months. You deserve it all You have accepted all the pain, needles, feedingtube and what else. Adam,

I am sorry you had to pay a second visit to inpatient life at the hospital, but I'm praying hard it is your last. Good to hear you are out. Time to let those meds do their job and get you better. I hope that those tastebuds of yours start working again really soon. Don't forget to try different things...you may be surprised that you like something you never did.

Anyway, enough of that. You hang in there and remember that a transplant doesn't happen on one day...it happens over many days for many months and soon enough you will be feeling like your old self again.

My son Matthew just marked his 2 year anniversary of his transplant for CML last month. Someday you will look back and not believe time could pass so quickly.

Hey Adam, Sounds like you're keeping up with the superheroes daily task of trying to rid your body of the undesirable effects of the new marrow. It must be hard to go through another adjustment as your body tries to draw new strength from this elixir of life. Know that there are still multitudes of people believing in your superpower to attack any obstacle that is put before you. So I send a heroes prayer for a speedy transition and eternal optimism for the future conquests of such an incredibly determined boy as yourself.
A Heroes Prayer:
Though I am unsure of the perils before me,
I will believe in myself and my strength
and ability.
I know that with faith, my resolve to
conquer is pure.
Through every new adventure, my powers will
endure.
So come with me Jesus, to find the
superhero within.
Thankyou for showing me the way
to fight...to heal...to win. Amen

You are amazing. Keep fighting hard, you're doing GREAT! And remember, most superheroes feel their worst just before they clobber the bad guy so you must be getting pretty close.

Hi guys,

You are always in our thoughts and prayers. Keep your spirits up, as much as possible, even though it is tough to do at times. Adam's recovery will have its ups and downs just like all journeys in life, but we know there will be a positive outcome. Make that stubbornness that all of us have, work for you. Adam, you're a tough guy, you will win this battle, and you'll then be well prepared to deal with anything that life throws at you in the future.
Love to you all.

Hey Adam it was great seeing you Friday - your happy smiling face made my day. Just so you know, the pizza tasted great but next time I'm going for the cookies. With your throat being so sore still, how about some frozen grapes, they might just do the trick, I'll bring some my next visit. Anything else you want let Mom or Dad know or let me know and I'll do my best. Hope you got all the airplanes made and that they're flying a bit better. Take care, love you lots, Aunty Nel

Hello Adam. I have been accessing the website whereever I am these days and updating Christopher and Danny daily, now it is down to two times per week so I adjusted my routine slightly. We were excited to hear you were released; but, now that you are back in the hospital you do realize you are in the best place where you will get the help you need. Once the doctor's figure out what is going on, then they can treat the problem, and we all hope that you will put on some pounds. We look forward to seeing you when you are well. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Say hi to your Mom, Dad and Sean OK?

It must feel wonderful to be home. I'm sure you'll be able to recover a lot quicker there - get some peace and quiet and good food. I think its a great idea on the weight gain issue, and I will meet Winny's offer of a $1. a pound as well. Plan for something that you can spend the money on Adam. Take care, love you lots.

Hi all! Adam I'm glad to hear you are able to go home more often, that is a good thing. So, you are continually being bugged about eating more which must be tough if it doesn't agree with you. Well, I kind of like Krista's idea of $'s given for pounds gained. I will give you $1.00 for every pound you gain, but I want to cap it at $75 dollars. That should cover the cost of the new pairs of pants you'll need! Anyhow buddy, keep up the good work! We're all rooting for you. Love Aunty Win

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

That is great news that you are able to be out of the hospital for so much time...don't forget to wash your hands...I know you know that already, but reminders never hurt. Suzanne, as for the eating...I can totally relate...this was perhaps one of the hardest things to overcome...and Matthew was also very close to having an NG tube, but he pulled through and started to eat...ya know what helped? Money, yes, we paid for pounds. I truly believed this worked, not overnight, but over time, the pounds came back. Matthew started with root beer floats and tortilla chips and salsa...we let him eat whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted...hoping Adam's tastebuds cooperate soon!

Just a short note to let you know that I am thinking about you guys all the time, and pray for a speedy recovery for Adam. Sounds like it is up and down like a roller coaster, but that is to be expected, it sounds like he is getting better slowly but surely, and that is a blessing in it's self. Like you said it is a long journey, with all the love and prayers that your family is receiving from everyone it will keep all of you strong (it is working already).

God bless and keep strong

Getting home is great news. Home always feels nice - I am so glad you are able to get there, even if it is for a little bit. It must be nice for everyone else too - hospitals are good - but home is a better place for visits and hanging out. Here's hoping for day 100 - one day at a time!
love to you all -
jackie

Hi Adam, sorry you are still hugging the bucket, but glad you got to go home even for a short bit.

I am very busy now training and thinking of you always when i am pounding the pavement. I am sending out letters to friends, family and business in the hopes they will support the me in raising money for Luekima.I am going to be selling raffle tickets in a month for one of Uncle Ricks Benches so maybe when you are feeling better you could sell some for me. Anyway hope you have a better day today with the bucket. all our love

It's a long hard road, but with friends and family to carry you, it is all that much easier. On the upside, once you're over the whole bucket hugging stage there's plenty of idle time to thump those pesky video games you never had time for before.

Hi all! We are glad to hear that things are getting better. Kelsey is also doing a 60 hour bike-a-thon for cancer March 7-10. It's not as intense as Michele's but she is looking forward to doing it all the same. We are heading for Mexico Saturday. So we will touch base with you when we get back. Keeping you all in our thoughts and Prayers. Love Mark, Wilma, Anthony, Jessice and Kelsey

Hi Adam,

We are glad to hear that things are progressing as to be expecting. I was wondering if you and your dad got that frustrating car put together. I hope they figure out what to give you to settle your stomach soon as the throwing up must be making you feel pretty lousy. We have been thinking of you all lots and hope that you are buoyed by all the love and prayers being sent your way. Hopefully you will be well enough to do the next bingo game.

Kudos to Sean for passing last semesters courses, we knew you could do it.

Love Ann,Geoff,Mackie and Logan
