Parker's Page

Parker celebrates LIFE at the beach! (age 4) CA

On July 9, 2002 Parker was almost 3 years old when diagnosed with Philadelphia Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. (Now 12 years old, August 5, 2011). Only 4% of ALL's are Philadelphia positive. This Philadelphia chromosome makes it a much more aggressive type of leukemia and requires a more intense chemotherapy regimen. A drug called Gleevec was given in the hopes that it would be a cure. However, doctors across the nation are now seeing patients relapse on this drug. The only cure now is a bone marrow transplant. On Feb 1, 2005, we jumped ship and headed to the University of Duke Medical Center in North Carolina for a 6/6 unrelated cord blood transplant. Parker received his new cells on March 23, 2005. Please read the daily journals below to see how Parker is doing.

Journal

Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve updated! I wish I could say things have been uneventful over the past few months, but truth be told….Parker continues to fight hard with skin cancer issues. He’s had many spots removed, biopsied, chemo-ed…..on and on and on….. It is a battle without end. It’s so hard to watch him go through these painful treatments. Truly skin cancer has been way more painful than the leukemia ever was!

Parker has also been battling stomach issues for months now. They’ve run every test that they can think of and even did a colonoscopy back in January. Everything has come back negative, which is a good thing for some of the stuff that they were testing for….The scariest of which was Graft Vs. Host Disease, which would have meant that he was rejecting his transplant in his gut. We were very happy that this was not the case. THAT would have been a hard fix! It would have been nice if something easy to fix had come back positive, but everything was negative and we still don’t have any answers, and he is still having tummy issues.

We are trying to figure out when to take Parker to Duke for his yearly studies. It’s probably going to get held off till June. He’s doing so well in school and we don’t want him to miss anything. He’s also on the school baseball team, is doing science fair, is in band, and placed 3rd with his Robotics Team this year. He’s trying out for club baseball on Saturday and we always try to squeeze in some family cycling here and there.

We are also working with the plastic surgery specialist on how and when to reconstruct Parker’s mouth. Not sure where that surgery is going to fit into the busy life of Parker Fritsch! He really wants this surgery though, and is pushing us to get it done.
Our charity cycling team is busy into a new season with some fabulous new members! We were so excited to present the Central CA Blood Center with a brand new blood mobile last week! We look forward to continue raising funds for charities and doing good in the community!

Love to all! Thanks for your continued support over the years!

Keeping the FAITH!

Melissa, Richard, Parker, and Connor
