MacKenzie Maier
MacKenzie was diagnosed on October 16th 2004, just two weeks after her 4th birthday, with stage 4 high risk Neuroblastoma. Each year 1 in 100,000 children in the U.S. develope Neuroblastoma, which accounts for 7 to 10 % of childhood cancer. The current survival rate for stage 4 patients is about 50%. MacKenzie completed her 1st phase of intense chemotherapy in April 2005. Phase 2, a bone marrow transplant, began on June 12 2005 the stem cell transfusion was on June 20th and we came home Aug. 17th 2005. After transplant MacKenzie had to go through 12 treatments of radiation. It took three months before MacKenzie began to feel better and gain weight. The first of Nov. 2005 our Dr decided to give her more stem cells in hopes that it would stimulate her bone marrow to make more platelets and red blood cells without having to have transfusion every week sometimes twice a week. This was exactly what she needed. She has not had to have any platlets since Nov. 2005 and the last blood transfusion was Jan. 2006. 17th. Today MacKenzie is doing GREAT!!! MacKenzie's Dr visits are down to only 4x a year. She has blood test and Dr appt. every 3 months and all of her scans every 6 months. She is still cancer free today (12/30/2007) and hopefully forever.
We had lots of fun and now it is time to go home.
Journal
Friday, January 26, 2007 10:57 AM CST MacKenzie is doing well. She has battled a few infections like strep throat and earaches but those are just normal childhood things. We have another set of scans coming up in Feb but we are confident that they will be normal.
Our non-profit organization called Mac's Project is doing great and we have been able to provide support to several other families who are battling this horrible disease.
