I love watching Ivy turn cartwheels, spring into the air on the trampoline, and read aloud her current favorite poetry book, "Where the Sidewalk Ends." What a happy 8th birthday. She makes my heart skip a beat with her huge smile. Our family is so blessed, so grateful for the miracle of Ivy. Pete and Allyson, you deserve medals of bravery. Much love,

Silly to be writing when I live across the street, but just hearing that Ivy had a cold yesterday... I somehow found myself back here at caringbridge. I know she's FINE, and just gets a cold now and then like every other 6 year old. Still, we never forget the hard days documented here, and count each day with her as a blessing. She's vibrant, energetic and healthy now and I know all is well. Love,

Hi there! Wow, Ivy's story starts out sounding a WHOLE lot like my Emily's story. Em was born in January of 2004, diagnosed (after weeks of pushing the pediatrician and dermatologist) in May of 2004. We had the same issues you did with them saying it was molluscum, diaper rash, no big deal. So glad both of our little girls got the diagnosis they needed early on! Em responded to the steroid cream for the rash, only to have her liver and spleen become involved 4 months later. She did the prednisone and 6 months of chemo and has been in remission ever since! So glad to hear that Ivy is doing well!!! Wonderful to hear a story like yours! =o)

Greetings from New Jersey! You were actually kind enough to communicate with us a year ago when our son Jacob (turns 3 on Dec 7th) was unconscious in the PICU in Hackensack due to complications from LCH. Since then his 2CDA and ARAC treatments were very successful, as were the past 6-8 months of Vinblastine. Now he is doing so well...energetic, growing, happy, in school, and we're starting oral maintenance for a year. We wanted to deeply thank you for your words of guidance and encouragement, as it was all we had to go on during a very scary time. I'm happy to say we are some of the lucky ones for sure. We are elated that Ivy is doing so well too! What a blessing...

Much Love...The Barons (Reis, Melissa & Jacob Skye)

We are so happy but scared at the same time we dont know what might happend. Glad to learn that Ivy is doing great. We also have a baby who diagnosed with LCH on October 27, 2008, and started his chemo right away.
Now we have only six weeks of maintenance left, that is, 2 cycles of Vincristine. But, even we are so desperately want to have a normal life without these meds, stopping chemo is more terrifying than starting it, because the percentage of relapse is so high. So, in any chance, do you know any LCH patient who doesn't relapse or who is skin-only (we are so lucky we are, at least by now)? We just want to know more good news and be more confident.
And another information I've got from your journal "just getting her to 8 years old, then the disease will burn itself out", Is that true? I know some adult LCH patient.

I wish we could make it for the hike this year. Money is tight. I am shooting for spring break if all goes well. I am glad this day has finally come and here to stay hopefully. I am speaking of Ivy of course and her remission. Can't wait to see you all again. It has been too too long. My dad is turning 79 on the 29th. I have been trying to get things in order. He is probably going to be going to a retirement assisted living community. I am taking it slow to transition by going to school full-time online and only working part-time so that I can keep an eye on him. He has been doing great here as of late.

Lots of luv,

Your update brought tears to my eyes. I can see the FIVE of you thriving, each in your own ways, and am so happy. The port is gone! (But not forgotten; what a beautiful balance you have achieved.) May the skin rash pass, as moisture seeps into all of you after this incredibly parching time. May each of you continue to thrive, and inspire the rest of us as you have done for so long now. We love you so much,
Caroline, Randy and Sarah

That is awesome news that Ivy is off all meds and getting her port removed. This is awesome! Wow, you all have been soooo strong thru all of this. I can't wait to see you all and the latest addition.

I do have some bad news! )-: A little girl at our dance studio only 3 years old was diagnosed with Leukemia less than a week ago. I gave her a link to your website. I thought she might draw some strength from someone who has been down that long, long road.

Wow...having the port out will be a HUGE milestone for Ivy. We are rooting for her! Life has been much better since Patrick's has been out. We got out of an ER visit just last week b/c counts had just been done and he had NO port! Yipee!

June 6 is scheduled for the HAA regional meeting and Hike for a Cure kick-off at Stanford. I hope you guys can come this year! We are eager to meet Juliet and say hi to you all.

Wishing you the best with the port removal!

Boy did that bring back memories (and tears to my eyes)of trying to get Kaylee out from under the exam table (and that was just for well check!) I guess one thing to remember, is a lot of times when Ivy had to go through medical proceedures, she was really ill, so was inclined to be more cooperative. Now she is feeling good (except the rash), is older & more sophisticated and therefore more willing to protest! So sorry you all and to go through such a scene! Someone already mentioned, rewards & bribes can help lots with getting through these doctor visits. Hoping biopsy comes back neg for LCH!
Love to you all

Whoa! What a bummer. Well, guess it had to happen sometime that Ivy would protest in a big way. Hope this phase'll pass quickly. Really hope your ear has stopped ringing and that your nerves have returned to normal after that horror show. Really, really hope Ivy is recovered from the fit and all tests are the most benign results possible. Thank you for writing! Much love to you all, and incessant prayers,
Caroline, Randy and Sarah

Oh, man, what a rough day! I'm sorry. Liam went through periods of uncooperativeness with medical personnel, too. All I can suggest is that bribes and rewards work pretty well. I'm glad she only has one stitch. Fingers crossed that the biopsy is negative for LCH. Lots of hugs!

I'm so sorry Ivy (and you) had to go through that. I've been fighting Stage 3 Vulvar Cancer since June, 2007 and the tumor keeps coming back. Needless to say I keep having to have biopsies and it can be very traumatic and I'm an adult. No child should have to go through what a child with cancer has to go through. I have been following Ivy since she was a baby. My prayers are with all of you

Brownsville, KY - Tuesday, March 17, 2009 8:15 PM CDT
Hi Guys,
Saw your post on the HAA site. Hope the rash is getting a little better.
Jack's ferritin was over 15,000 at one point. Yes, that isn't a typo. Right now, it is around 3,000 and they are not concerned given the number of transfusions he has had. It will SLOWLY go down over time.

Ferritin is part of the HLH diagnosis and while 500 is alarming, they don't consider it an absolute until it is over 5k.

Not saying 700 isn't something to ask the doctors about, but like you have probably figured out by now, it is prob. due to previous transfusions.

best to you guys!

It actually has been a joy to check in and not see updates, since that usually signals good news. It's a different joy to get an update, especially since we haven't had a chance to check since 9/2, as Caroline had surgery also on 9/3 - full knee replacement. It's all gone super-well. We've been home since Friday(!), and today getting up and around, with walker, with relative ease. So great to here Ivy's leg sore has been somewhat resolved. We assume no further updates since 9/3 means no nasty dx beyond the necrotic tissue has been uncovered. May it all heal up quickly and completely, her ANC rise and Ivy, and all of you, shine. Much love,
Caroline, Randy and Sarah

We enjoyed our workout with Jasper and Ivy last Friday--they are such bright, alert, energetic, amazing kids. They are intrepid in terms of barreling down our hillside, rolling in the hay, riding trikes at full speed and generally enjoying life, especially in the swimming pool. Ivy has such a great sense of humor and love of life. Hard to believe her health is sometimes precarious. Blessings on all and hoping for a good delivery of baby sister in September. We just got back from a long visit to Ireland, so missed hearing about the terrible roller coaster while it was happening. But we're so glad to arrive at the latest entry and see the improving course. What a tough and beautiful cookie she is. Hello Ivy and family,

Just getting caught up - congratulations on the new baby! I'm always a little reassured to learn of other families who ventured down that path in the midst of so much medical drama! As you noted, some may think it's crazy, but we found a new little one on-the-way was such a positive for everyone to focus on. Christian's nurses just gushed over what a great bother he would be. (Now, two years later, if I could just get them to quit fighting over toys....)

I expect Jasper and Ivy will be wonderful siblings to your new little girl. Best wishes to all of you!

Sounds like the trip was all you hoped for and more! We don't personally know anyone who deserved the R & R and celebration of yourselves more than you. Welcome home. May re-entry be smooth, relatively easy and enjoyable to be back in the familiar. With all our love,

I'm so glad you all had such a great time! Dillon hasn't decided what or where he wants for his "wish". When I asked him if he could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? His reply was "the library". So we're still working on someplace a little more evtravagant than the local library. Maybe Ivy's trip will inspire him!

We hope to see you all at Camp Okizu this Memorial weekend!!
Take care,
Diane Clark

We hope you are having a fantastic time in Disneyworld. We think of you often. Jack-the-Cat is fine and so are cousins baby Rose, Emma and all the family. You two kids sure looked happy exploring the big black limo that came to take you and your folks to the airplane Monday morning. Hope you had a great ride and many more rided this week that are even better. Hugs to you four. You so deserve this trip, and the royal treatment. All our love, Grammie-Jenifer & Grandpa- Ed

Hi Guys,
Hope you are all at home and snuggling in at least for some comfortable days. I know the avoiding people drill, and it must be annoying and difficult with your active family. What do you do to occupy Ivy?

We were on the edge of our seats about the intestinal thing; so great to hear, once again, it's just bacteria. JUST bacteria! So weird to think in those terms, huh? In any case, now we're simply sending love and anti-bacterial prayers.

What a relief to find out that Ivy has a bacterial infection! And I mean that in all seriousness! I hope they can find some meds to give her some relief from the c. diff. and am so relieved to hear it is not a relapse. Hope her cold is mild and that you all have a Happy Valentine's Day!
Shayne <mom2pete@hotmail.com>
Houston, TX - Sunday, February 10, 2008 4:37 PM CST
Yay for c. diff!! I'm happy to hear that Ivy's problems are being caused by something other than the LCH (although it does seem strange to be happy about a hard to treat bacterial infection!). I hope she is better soon, and you are able to enjoy the rest of February!

I'm glad that the recent developments have been so positive and I'm visualizing even more good news for her in 2008. Please let us know if there's anything we can do.
