Dear Vohland Family,

We wanted to express our deep sadness upon learning of the passing of your most wonderful Mom and Wife, Andrea. It's hard to believe, after all these years of following Ben's story and hoping for the best for you all, that this would be the final outcome...how we wish it could be all so different. I know you will all have a very special angel watching over you and living in your hearts, until the day when you will all be together again. You remain in our thoughts and prayers....

Dear Andrea,

I am so sorry it has taken me so long to get back to check on you. My laptop gave up on me over Xmas and I still have not gotten out and bought a new one (over at sister's using hers), I miss checking on everyone and reading my favorite blogs, not to mention my emails! Anyway, I was so thrilled to read that you had a marvelous Christmas with your beautiful family and smiled to see the wonderful photo of you and Amelia ringing in 2009 with great big smiles :-) But I was saddened to read of your latest pain and am now very worried about how you are doing after your scan. Keeping you close in my prayers, as are so many others, that you can have lots and lots more quality time with the kids and Chris. I wish life could be so much more fair. Sending you many hugs and all our best mojo...

Here's A Poem That Touches My Heart:

Footprints in the Sand - Poem

One night I dreamed I was walking
along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in
the sand. Sometimes there were two sets
of footprints, other times there were
one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from anguish,
sorrow or defeat,I could see only
one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord, that if
I followed you, you would walk
with me always. But I have noticed
that during the most trying periods
of my life there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand. Why,
when I needed you most, you have not
been there for me?”

The Lord replied, “The times
when you have seen only one set
of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

Dear Andrea,

May God be especially close to you during this difficult time and bring peace to you and your family. I pray that your pain is eased and that you are comforted in the knowledge that you brought Ben through his trial and that he will grow to be a man. My grandson is in his second year of ALL treatment and it hasn't been easy but I can't imagine the burdens you have carried and are carrying still. You are right, we will all be there one day - it is just a matter of when. My prayers are with you and your family.

We are praying for you all so much. My mother is also fighting metastatic breast cancer this year, and often my other kids say, "I wish cancer didn't exist!" I know your kids and your whole family wish this more fervently than any of us can imagine. We will hold you all in prayer.

Hi Andrea!

Thank you for the update...I am obviously very relieved to hear that you have battled back, not once but twice, from some very tough times recently...I know you are made of tough stuff ;-) So sorry that you have to go through all of this, but so glad that you have the extreme love of Chris and the kids to help you keep up the good fight.
You sound excited for the holiday season that is quickly coming upon us...it sounds so funny to hear you are going to a Xmas party on the beach (but fabulous too!) when we are drowning in the snow here...it is so, so beautiful, I hope you have good memories of your time in the snowy North in Moose Jaw :-) My boys were so excited to see the snow after a very dry winter thus far, we had 8 inches come down yesterday and they were off like lightning to get in some toboganning time! I bet yours are having just as much fun in the wonderful sand and surf :-)
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas season and sending up many prayers for you to have a Christmas (or any type!)miracle. Wouldn't that be grand?

Dear Andrea, Chris, and kids: I was just snopping around and came across the "Ben's Page" on my computer. I was just horrified to hear of your experience and bad news since you left Moose Jaw. I thought the worst was behind you guys. That Australia would be a more loving existence for you all. I just don't know what to say, Andrea my heart goes out to you for all your pain and suffering, first your your son and now for yourself. Chris, no one will know as much as you how heartbreaking this is for you. You have strong family bond and such a loving relationship as a couple, Please know that I will have you in my prayers daily and I stretch out my arms and hug you all for this is more than one family should have to bear. I know that it is your will to go on that will sustain you both. Again, I am absolutely stuck for words. God bless you both and your children.

Andrea, here is a poem for you!

YOU STILL HAVE HOPE

If you can look at the sunset and smile,
then you still have hope.

If you can find beauty in the colors of a small flower,
then you still have hope.

If you can find pleasure in the movement of a butterfly,
then you still have hope.

If the smile of a child can still warm your heart,
then you still have hope.

If you can see the good in other people,
then you still have hope.

If the rain breaking on a roof top can still lull you to sleep,
then you still have hope.

If the sight of a rainbow still makes you stop and stare in wonder,
then you still have hope.

If the soft fur of a favored pet still feels pleasant under your fingertips,
then you still have hope.

If you meet new people with a trace of excitement and optimism,
then you still have hope.

If you give people the benefit of a doubt,
then you still have hope.

If you still offer your hand in friendship to others that have touched your life,
then you still have hope.

If receiving an unexpected card or letter still brings a pleasant surprise,
then you still have hope.

If the suffering of others still fills your with pain and frustration,
then you still have hope.

If you refuse to let a friendship die,
or accept that it must end,
then you still have hope.

If you look forward to a time or place of quiet and reflection,
then you still have hope.

If you still buy the ornaments,
put up the Christmas tree or cook the supper,
then you still have hope.

If you can look to the past and smile,
then you still have hope.

If, when faced with the bad,
when told everything is futile,
you can still look up and end the conversation with the phrase..."yeah...BUT.,"
then you still have hope.

Hope is such a marvelous thing.
It bends, it twists, it sometimes hides,
but rarely does it break.

It sustains us when nothing else can.
It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead,
when we tell ourselves we'd rather give in.

Hope puts a smile on our face
when the heart cannot manage.

Hope puts our feet on the path
when our eyes cannot see it.

Hope moves us to act
when our souls are confused of the direction.

Hope is a wonderful thing,
something to be cherished and nurtured,
and something that will refresh us in return.

And it can be found in each of us,
and it can bring light into the darkest of places.
NEVER LOSE HOPE!

Andrea,

I'm an ALL-List mom. I wanted to send you warm, healing thoughts/hopes/prayers as you start another long road. There aren't enough words in the world to cover what must be going through your heart. I can't fathom how you're managing to make it through an ordinary day, much less with "only" leaky eyes. Most of us on List may be half a world away, but we will do our best to comfort and support you. I think the idea of a memory box is brilliant! Be sure to include ridiculous photos of past hair styles you're embarrassed about. I have the sneaking suspicion you have an amazing sense of humor.

May you find the healing you need.

Andrea----I am at a loss for words, this is absolutely so unfair. I thought about you today while I was driving around doing errands...thought about you looking in on your children at night, kids who so need their Mom....it is just heartbreaking. And you are right, there is way too much you still need to see and do for them, keep on fighting the good fight.
Sending prayers that your family will be blessed to have you with them for a long time to come.

Andrea,
An old timer from the ALL-Kids list here. So sorry to hear of your health setback. Sending healing thoughts to you.

You asked for songs or quotes-I'll share a song that has meant a lot to me in our family's battle with cancer. It's from Sugarland and called "Stand Back Up" and for me, it speaks for the families who live with cancer. Here's a few lines of lyrics from the song, all the lyrics are at http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/sugarland/standbackup.html:

Go ahead and take your best shot,
Let 'er rip, give it all you've got,
I'm laid out on the floor, but I've been here before,
I may stumble, yeah I might fall,
Only human aren't we all?
I might lose my way, but hear me when I say,
I will stand back up,
You'll know just the moment when I've had enough,
Sometimes I'm afraid, and I don't feel that tough,
But I'll stand back up,

Hang in there Andrea, hug your kids, keep being nice to the checkout chick and know that you are being lifted in prayer around the world.

Hi Andrea - I have been meaning to leave you a note a few times - but then get bogged down in the what to say.

Funny you think after being immersed in the cancer world for so long that would not be a problem. I'm sorry you are going through this. Having a kid with cancer is enough!

I will did out my inspiring qutes and post one to you.

One thing I read in a magazine once that I thought was a really neat idea. This mom who had incurable liver cancer spent a bit of time putting a memory box together for each of her kids. Wrote letters for each of their birthdays till they reached 20, left videos, etc. Not sure how much energy you have - but maybe you have a friend who could help.

Lots of love, prayers and positive thoughts winging your way.

Dear Andrea,
Greetings from your long lost friend in Tamworth !! Who by the way was at Taronga Zoo last sunday.... My friend Lorraine came over from Winnipeg for a mere week ( major jet lag), so the least I could do was indulge her need to see a platypus swimming !!
Sorry I've been out of touch so long !! Not very good at electronic stuff (keep losing your details with every computer meltdown, change of provider...) but I did manage to find the caringbridge site after much more searching than the average teenager would need.
And I must admit I've retreated a bit socially because of my owngoing marriage difficulties. Funny ( not Ha Ha) how we can do that when we need the support the most?

Was glad there was a way to find you again,as I have been thinking of you and Ben here and there. Was flabbergasted to read of your diagnosis and treatment!! Last time I checked things were looking good for Ben and I had hoped that things would ease up for you guys from there on in...

My thoughts and wishes are with you all !! Thought it was cool you came back to Australia again. Didn't catch where, as I only had time to read a few selected entries. Would love to hear from you, but will understand if there's too much going on....

Have to run and finish the bathroom cleaning, help with a computer search, and make a net for a bug catching school excursion tomorrow. Plus brace myself for a swim with the kids (just a little cool for these old bones). I should be better than that being Canadian, but I have gone a bit native in all sorts of ways including that.

Mike's off on a 76 km mountain bike challenge in Walcha to raise money for the westpac helicopter service, so he'll need serious carboloading and slouch time on the couch when he gets back later. I think with daylight savings last night, he had to wake up at 4am ( for 7.30 am start) on his internal time clock.

Good luck with your bathroom renovation !! Makes me shudder and flashback to our renovations a few years ago, and the pool installation and landscaping a year and a half ago. I'm resisting the kitchen and bathroom ideas my hubby has at the moment.

Good Morning, Andrea,

Another update, and one that started so well! Hoping and praying that the lesions on your lungs are not mets...so happy to hear that you had a lovely holiday with your family, you all so deserve it. I have been to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Canberra too, waaaaayyy back in 1977, my uncle used to live in Melbourne with his wife and first child (they have two more now)....and that first child, my cousin Katherine, is just in the process of becoming a doctor, so now I am really dating myself, LOL! It's been some time now since your update and you would have had surgery already, I am praying to hear that the big tumor was just a cyst. And that you didn't have to have any really invasive stuff done also. Please let us know how you are doing; in the meantime, you are very much in my prayers. Hang in there, those kids need you, never give up your hope, I think you can do this.
Do you celebrate Hallowe'en in Aussie, on the 31st? If so, won't it be lovely to not wear snowsuits?? LOL
All my best to the boys!!
Hope that bathroom is getting finished ;-)

I was doing some reminiscing and decided to go back in Lucas' guestbook and read some of those early, early messages when he was in the thick of treatment. I ran across Ben's link and thought, wow I wonder how they are doing.
I am so sorry that you still have that cancer monster living in your house. If anything, Ben showed you how to be brave and continue fighting. I wish you the same. Positive thinking really has it's good points.

HI Andrea,

I still check this page now and then. I was happy to see an update.

Katie is now OT - if Ben had been treated at our clinic so would he since the POG protocols were the same for boys and girls (2.5 years). I don't know how the boys stand it for so long. Katie had to drag her little body to the finish line - the last few months were awful! Anyway - thank goodness that is over and we are now enjoying each and every day of OT.

Hope you continue to update now and then.

Since we are already doing the neutrophil dance for Noelle, it is no problem to add a step or two for you. I feel for you guys and completely empathize. We are two months shy of our one year anniversary and just did a three night stint for T&N. We were one room over from that awful room where the doctor et al. confirmed the dx. Hope those counts are climbing and no fever returns. You are lucky to have been let out - when we were inpatient and the counts were "going the wrong way" they wouldn't let us go until the started going up.

Dear Chris, Andrea, Ben, Adam & Amelia,
I actually click on each evening when I check my emails to see how things are going, because you are on my prayer list. Kim & Tim are there now too, so we are all hoping for the best in that area. Glad the Wish Trip was such a good experience (from all accounts) and Halloween looked like a lot of fun. As Justin says, it's been hot here, and we had some incredible rain recently - 170+ mm one day, most of it in a few hours. I was out in the car and was lucky to get home without being washed away - had to re-route several times.
It is really good to hear that Ben is going well at present - may that continue steadily. It is a long a difficult road, but the end will be worth the journey. God bless! Rita Clancy, olsh

This time of year definitely brings back some painful memories of last Christmas when this nightmare began, but we are hopeful that this year's holidays will be much brighter and happier. Here's a couple;

Most spoons balanced on the face
Tim Johnston (USA) (b. 1 January 1992), was able to balance on his face (one on each ear, two on each cheek, three on his chin, two on his lips, one on his nose and three on his forehead) and balance them for 30 seconds at on May 28, 2004.

God bless. Hope this monster goes away. And those 10 things you've learned, Ben's Mommy, are so very true. God bless. If only more people can think those 10 up and live by them... May God guide us to a cure. Bless. XoXoXo.

Dear Ben, You will need to get a big sign with your name on it and put that around your neck so that everybody knows who you are, just in case your identity card gets sent to another different country.
We are all thinking of you and are looking forward to seeing you next month.
Sam and Kenzie went to see Shrek 2 the other day and they said it was great. Have you seen it yet?
I heard you were helping Dad in the garden the other day, if I remember your Dad's gardening skills correctly it might be better if you take over the gardening completely.
Give Joseph a big hug to congratulate him on graduating from pre-school - that's very impressive.
We went to the beach and kicked the footy around last week, it was a bit cold for a swim though. We will go fishing when you get here and take you down the beach as well.
Sam, Kenzie and Alex said to tell you that Hobbs is getting fat and lives on the verandah sleeping on the lounge - he sounds a bit like Uncle Justin doesn't he?
Keep up the good work over there and tell Mommy and Daddy to be good.

See you later

love Uncle Dan, Bin, Sam, Kenzie, Alex and Hobbs xxxxxx

I agree with you about the blood donations --- I don't know how to thank people enough, and encourage others as well. Good for you for mentioning it in the journal; I should mention it again soon, also.

Ben and your family, I don't know how or why I ended up on your site, but after one look at your picture there was something that seemd to connect. I will be praying for you and that you will be touched by God's healing hands and the pain and suffering will stop. Keep on being a fighter Ben, I don't mean with other people, I mean fight against that ugly monster leukemia. I have not gone any further into your site than this, so maybe somebody in your family could e-mail me back and fill me in on what is all happening with your battle. My grandaughter Mykayla was five when she was diagnosed with A.L.L. and for me that had to be the worst day of my life. Mykayla has a Bible verse that she learned in Sunday school way before she was diagnosed and it was also the very first one that she learned and she uses that verse whenever someone is being negative around her. It is NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD LUKE 1:37. As you can see by my e-mail address we come from your next door province, Manitoba. We live in Morden, I don't know if you know where that is, but we are known for the Corn and Apple Festival. Mykayla is on her maintenance treatment at this time. I don't know if there is a part of the treatment where a person can actually relax and say, Oh it is almost over. I wish we knew for sure, but only God knows, so we keep in touch with Him and keep praying that He will be with all the cancer and leukemia kids and restore their health to them. I certainly hope to hear from your family as there are soooooooooo many questions that I would like to ask you and your family and see how your battle and Mykayla's battle are on the same level or if there are a bunch of different things that are being done for either one of you. I guess I shouldn't be so lazy and I should go through your site so that I could find out how old you are, when your birthday is, what you like to do when you are allowed to do it and I have many more questions to ask. So I sure hope that we can become friends through the internet and share with each other. I will keep you in my prayers and hope to hear from you soon. Love and best wishes always. Grandma Ruth.

Hi Guys - Sorry to hear Ben has hit bottom on the counts but so glad you were able to get home. I hope the project went well - post some pictures when you have it all done.

I still haven't been in touch by phone with the SuperSibs coordinator. But they sent me some info to post at the clinic. I would go ahead and send in the form for your own SuperSibs - I believe they are taking them from Canada now. I will post some info about it on Katie's web page later this week.

I was browsing through the ALL Kids website, and was attracted to your Caring Bridge Site. My six year old son, Riley, was diagnosed with early Pre-B ALL on January 14th of this year and also began Delayed Intensification in early May (the 7th to be exact). We had to go on May 10th for a PEG injection as well. The allergic reaction must have been very frightening for you. The side effects of some of these drugs are very scary! My son gets a lot of soreness in his legs and feet with the vincristine. So far he has been able to tolerate the doxorubicin quite well - one of the drugs I was extremely worried about. All the best to you. I will be checking your page often.

I guess the weather in Saskatchewan is quite different than Ontario. It's been simply beautiful here (but as one of my sons reminded me, we do live fairly close to the most southern point of Canada). Hopefully you don't have anymore terrible reactions to the PEG. I know it can be really scary. Everytime Lucas gets them, I sit there and worry if this is going to be the time that he reacts. Lyza was so happy to have that month of injections over that everything else was pretty easy after that. How did you teach Ben to swallow the tablets? Wow, Australia!!! (did I even spell that right??) That is wonderful news! I'm sure ya'll will be glad to get back and visit your old stomping grounds again.

I hope Ben continues to feel well and that DI goes smoothly for him. We just finished DI #1 a few weeks ago and except for low counts at the end (which one quick transfusion took care of) things went very smoothly. I hope it goes just as well for Ben.

Have a great week!

Hi. My name is Frances and my 4 year old son, Lucas, was diagnosed with ALL a week and a half after your Ben. I can totally relate to your last entry. I hate vincristine and it's sore leg phenomena, low platelets and all the scary stuff that goes with them, low neutrophil count and the isolation that comes with it. I try very hard not to feel miserable about the cards that Lucas and our family has been dealt but sometimes it gets the better of me. Remain positive because we need to in order to scare this cancer monster away. Sending only positive vibes your way.

Found your site from Julianna's. From one ALL mom to another ALL mom. YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO WORRY!! It is only natural that you would worry. When given a diagnosis like cancer your world changes, just like you said. Things I used to worry about I now laugh at myself for having ever worried about them. Then when I am done laughing I get angry that I don't have the luxury of worrying over "small" things anymore and probably never will. Sure you can choose the glass to be half full or half empty but you still have the right to be worried, scared, angry, and whatever else you may be feeling without beating yourself up. So, go ahead worry. You and I both know that it won't change how you deal with the situation. You will deal with it and you will deal with it very well. Parents like us are stronger than we give ourselves credit for.
Praying for you and the whole family.

Hello fellow Canadians! You live right in my old stomping grounds--and I even lived in Regina for almost a year (1982). That Drumheller pic was great--have you been to Dinosaur Park near Brooks? It is even more awesome--we went a couple of month before Lyza was diagnosed in 2002. It is so great that we decided to skip the dinosaur stuff at Animal Kingdom at Walt Disneyworld when we went on Lyza's Wish trip two weeks ago! Been there, done that--seen the actual excavation sites! Will be checking up on you often--see you soon. Lori, Lyza's mom

Hey Ben! You don't know me, but I found your site from Kendrie's. Her mom is a friend of mine. I wanted to come "meet" you and say hello! I looked at your pictures, I like the one of you with your family, but I LOVE the one of you with that Dinosaur. It must have been so great to see that in person. My son is 6 and he is crazy about dinosaurs. I will have to let him see that picture in the morning. I am assuming that photo was taken in Canada?!? I am sure we will be looking on the map because it will take some convincing that we should not jump in the car immediately and drive to see that dinosaur ourselves!

Anyway, I will be checking in on you. Take care. Talk to you later alligator.

I guess you don't know me, but I work at the hospital where your Dad works and ever since I heard about you I have been looking forward to meeting you. Now at least I have seen a picture and it is easy to see you are a very handsome and brave boy. I hope someday I get to meet you in person.
