Eric , What an amazing kid !!!! You are our hero.
Welcome to Eric's Web Page We have provided it to keep our family and friends updated on how he is doing. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed doing it
Eric Feldt is one of those unsung hero’s that people talk about. Since Oct. 2002, he has gone through a life that no child should ever have to live. Here is his incredible story: In October, 2002, just before his 8th birthday, we noticed that his left eye was drooping. We took him to his pediatrician for a checkup and were told that it was possible Bells Palsy. We came home and immediately researched what Bells Palsy was. The symptoms fit so we weren’t overly concerned. However, his eye never improved over the next few weeks so we took him back and a CT scan was done on his head. That showed nothing and again we were sent home. Eric had just entered the 2nd grade and was having a lot of difficulty sitting still and concentrating. One night he was complaining very strongly about his shoulder hurting and asked me if I could rub it. Well when I went to rub it, I noticed a lump on his back. The next day we went back to the doctor’s office where an MRI was scheduled. Eric went through a 4 hour MRI test and when the results came back we were told to immediately go to the hospital. Well needless to say, we were all very scared and worried. At the hospital that first day, there were all kinds of doctors coming in and out of his room doing all kinds of tests on his arms, hands, legs and feet. Finally we were told that he had a “massive” tumor on his spine and around into his chest, and he needed surgery ASAP. He had his surgery on Nov.15, 2002. The doctor who performed the surgery told us that his tumor “looked good”, (whatever that means) but that they were not able to remove it all from his chest. He was in the hospital for several days and the day he was being released the doctor came in and told us the devastating news that the tumor was cancerous.
On December 13, 2002, Eric received his first round of Chemotherapy. What awful medicine that is. He was so sick, and no words can express the helplessness that I as a mom felt. There was nothing that I could do to help him. During the year 2003, he received 39 chemo treatments, and 25 radiation treatments. His last chemo treatment was Oct. 20, 2003. We hope that anyone who reads this will say a prayer for him. The type of tumor he had has not been identified so therefore the doctors can give us no statistics for reoccurrence.
Eric has to have MRI’s now every 3-4 months and after the first year we think they will go to every 6 months.
There is no evidence of a tumor.
HOW THANKFUL WE ARE FOR THAT
The Chosen Mothers By Erma Bombeck
Most woman become a mother by accident, some by chance and a few by habit. Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with life threatening illnesses are chosen? Somehow, I visualize God hovering over earth selecting His instruments for progagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His Angels to make notes in a giant ledger....... "Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew" "Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint Cecilia" "Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint Greard" Finally, He passes a name to an angel and says, "Give her a child with cancer." The angel is curious, "Why this one God? She's so happy." "Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a child with cancer a mother who knows no laughter? That would be cruel." "But does she have patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she will handle it. "I watched her today," said God. "She has that feeling of self-independence that is so rare and necessary in a mother. You see, the child I am going to give her has its own world. She has to make it live in her world and that’s not going to be easy." "But Lord I don't think she believes in you," said the angel."No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness. The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"God nods, "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take anything her child does for granted. She will never consider a single step ordinary. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see....ignorance, cruelty, prejudice.... and allow her to rise above them." "And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air. God smiles and says....
"A mirror will suffice."
