Welcome to our Child Web Page. It has been provided to keep people updated about our Child. Stephanie was diagnosed with Stage III Nasopharyngeal Rhabdomyosarcoma on June 23, 2004. She underwent two surgeries shortly after that, and has completed 28 radiation treatments. She is still undergoing 42 weeks of chemotherapy, which should end sometime in May of 2005. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells begin growing in muscle tissue. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a type of a sarcoma, which means a cancer of the bone, soft tissues, or connective tissue (e.g., tendon or cartilage). Rhabdomyosarcoma begins in the soft tissues in a type of muscle called striated muscle. It can occur anywhere in the body.
Childhood rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue malignant tumor of skeletal muscle origin, accounts for approximately 3.5% of the cases of cancer among children 0 to 14 years and 2% of the cases among adolescents and young adults 15 to 19 years of age. It is a curable disease in most children with localized disease who receive combined modality therapy. The most common primary sites for rhabdomyosarcoma are the head and neck (e.g., parameningeal, orbit, pharyngeal, etc.), the genitourinary tract, and the extremities. Other less common primary sites include the trunk, chest wall, the abdomen (including the retroperitoneum and biliary tract), and the perineal/anal region.
Most cases of rhabdomyosarcoma occur sporadically with no recognized predisposing factor or risk factor, although a small proportion are associated with genetic conditions

Today, we celebrate the 5 year anniversary of Stephanie being off treatment. She is doing very well. She is graduating from High School this month, and will be attending college where she hopes to become a nurse. Her dream is to go to work as a nurse with the Oncology group at Arkansas Children's hospital someday. We believe she would be a very good asset there !
We are so proud of her and all her accomplishments !!!
