Scarlett Cowan Age 11 Cancer Free

Welcome to Scarlett Cowan's Web Page. It has been provided to keep her friends and family updated about her treatment and progress. Scarlett was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. She is scheduled to receive chemotherapy treatments for the next two-and-a-half years. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers! Please continue to pray for Scarlett and her family as they battle this disease.

Well, I finally figured out how to get to the site to update for you who still check on Scarlett. It's a good thing, I guess, that we have left this part of our world behind, but never will stop appreciating all the love and support that we felt and got from so many. Scarlett is doing GREAT. We have finally made it to a once-a-year checkup. She is beautiful, smart, active and healthy. She is as witty and sweet as she was when that nightmare began for her. She remembers a lot but has never let it get her down. She appreciates every second of everyday and remains the most positive person I have ever known. She wakes up happy and goes to bed happy. I teach her things as she grows but she is never being corrected or disciplined because she truly is as perfect as a human on this earth can get. It is so much fun watching her mature. She will be going to middle school next year. Cancer did one thing good - it gave me an extra year with her. She would have already been at middle school this year. Thank goodness I get one more year with her at home. We know we are going to blink and she'll be a senior. Her brother J.D. is now 5. Sister Savanna is a nurse at UAB and plans to go to nurse anesthetist school. Sister Anna graduated from Colorado as an engineer and has remained there working. As we began being a family of caringbridge, Anna had just gone to college a week before she was diagnosed, Savanna was a senior in high school and JD wasn't in the picture yet. Sometimes it can still feel like it was yesterday and other times I cannot believe that we really did all that we did in 2 years and 7 months.
I printed a long time ago all the journal entries and messages for Scarlett to have one day to read and know how loved she was. I assumed she would be much older. But she is already reading them. She said she wants to make a journal entry for whoever still looks at her site. She is busy tonight doing homework and getting ready for bed but I will let her soon. There is so much I could say... so many friends still dealing with cancer .... so many friends we lost along the way. We know how lucky we are that Scarlett's sweet little body responded to the medication. We also know how lucky we are to have had so many people's love and support. Thank you!
