Welcome to Michaels webpage. Michael is 10 years old. He has Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease. The motor neurons affect the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. It is a relatively common "rare disorder": approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers. It also causes weakness with the respiratory system. His diagnoses came two weeks before his second birthday. He will be going into the 4th grade. Michael has to sleep with a Bipap machine at night. This noninvasive machine breathes for him so that his body can get some rest. Michael also uses an Inexsufflator also known as a cough assist.Without it he has very weak coughs and pneumonia can set in so this helps him have productive coughs. He has a power chair. He loves video games, swimming, bowling, baseball, and aggravating ;) his little sister.
