Hello Everyone,

Christian has had his surgery to remove his port cancelled twice now. The first time we went to the Huntsville Hospital to have it removed they had not even run recent blood counts. So I requested the counts prior to surgery. The surgeon seemed to be really put off by this request. I called St. Jude to validate my request and they said absolutely we never remove a port without taking counts. He also had a very fine rash show up on his chest and back. You’ll never guess what the counts showed….well all of his counts had dropped and he has the parvovirus again! Of course, the surgery was cancelled.

He had an IV/IG transfusion about a week ago and then we checked the counts again and were scheduled for surgery this past Friday. Once again, his counts had dropped and he still has the nasty parvovirus! So, the latest is…St. Jude is delaying the port removal for 3 months. He will have his counts checked monthly and receive the IV/IG treatment once a month, too. Our next trip to St. Jude is scheduled for August 20th, when we are there Dr. Pui will decide what the next steps are and if the parvovirus is gone and his counts have rebounded we will have the port removed while we are there. I am much happier with this plan. I was really having second thoughts about using the surgeon here. You know we Moms are always right!

By the way, Happy Mother’s Day to all of you that are reading!

Nick will be done with school this Friday and graduate on May 20th. I can’t believe my little boy is 18! He has decided to go to Montevallo University which is south of Birmingham, close enough to come home for weekends but far enough away to be on his own. My parents and Elizabeth (Nick’s cousin) are coming up for his graduation. They will arrive this weekend we are thrilled to have them visit us. Dad, you have to come on Friday! ;-) Nick is busy with finishing last minute school projects, working at Jump Zone, reading everything in sight, writing his book and spending time with Lindsay!

Michael is just waiting for school to be out. He is going to be the King in Cinderella at Rainbow Elementary. He has a few solo singing parts, he only has one line but he and the Queen do a solo dance, too! She has to keep telling me “Hold my waist” during the dance. He’s not too sure about the getting close to the girls yet. We all know that will change soon! He will be 13 on June 15th which is Father’s Day what a great gift for Bill! He will go to North Carolina for a week long Boy Scout camp this summer and he is going to the Camp Smile a Mile (SAM) Sibling Camp (this is a camp for kids with cancer).

Christian is playing flag football and made two “tackles” this morning. He is enjoying Nick and Noah, his 2 best friends; we call them the three amigos. He will go to a Cub Scout day camp with Bill (Bill is an adult leader). We are trying to talk him into going to Camp Sam too. He is afraid that he will get home sick. The camp is almost a week long and he stays there overnight. He loved it last year! His physician’s assistant’s Mom is a counselor there.

As you can tell our summer is filling up fast! We do plan on visiting my parents in Georgia and doing some short trips around the area. We would love to have visitors, we have plenty of room! Bill has been really busy with the kids and dabbles in a couple of business ventures. I continue to do way more travel with work than I want to. Next week I will be in Colshire, VA for a training class and in the past month, I have been to Utah, Colorado and Reston, Virginia. Whew! It looks like it is slowing down for the summer though.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers. Please continue to keep all of the St. Jude kids in your prayers. Every time we go there are thousands of new patients…we can tell by hearing the patient id numbers that are given for the kids and the stunned faces of the parents. ;-(

Love,

Kim, Bill, Nick, Michael and Christian
