A letter from Heaven
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
"It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.
I need you here so badly, you are part of my plan.
There is so much that we can do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you.... in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who is in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain.
And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile."
So if you meet somebody who is sad and low;
Just lend a hand to pick them up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.... you're coming here with me.

Dear Father who art in Heaven...
Please join our family on this Thanksgiving day
And bless each one as we sit down to pray
As we remember those who have joined You above
So dearly missed and deeply loved.
Please provide us strength on this Thanksgiving day
Bless us with memories of those faraway...
Please grant patience to family and friends as we grieve
And help us reach out to others who are bereaved.
We give thanks to You on this Thanksgiving day....
For Your presence in our lives each and everyday.
For Your comfort, guidance, and never ending love...
And for taking care of our loved ones...in Heaven above.
As we light this candle on this Thanksgiving day...

Dear Mr. Hallmark, Sir
I am writing to you from heaven,
And though it must appear
A rather strange idea,
I see everything from here.
I just popped in to visit
Your store to find a card -
A card of love for my mom,
As this day for her is hard.
There must be some mistake, I thought,
Every card so filled with worth,
Except I could not find one card
From a child whose not on earth.
She is still my mother, too,
No matter where I reside.
I had to leave, she understands,
But, oh, the tears she's cried.
I thought that as I wrote you,
You would come to know
That though I am no longer there,
I still love my mother so.
I visit with her in her dreams,
And she talks with me all the time,
She wonders if that's really me,
Would you let her know I'm fine?
She's planted many flowers,
Where my living memory grows,
She carries me with her everywhere,
No matter where she goes.
She does so many loving things,
So none will ever forget,
That I once lived and loved on earth,
Now my love she needs to get.
Oh, Mr. Hallmark, sir,
Though I no longer live on earth,
I must find a way to remind her
Of her loving, wondrous worth.
She needs to somehow receive,
My message loud and clear,
The same as other mothers will,
From children who are still there.

God's Lent Child
I'll lend you for a little while a child of mine, God said,
For you to love him while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years, or forty-two or three;
But will you, till I call him back, take good care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll have the lovely memories as a solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return;
But there are lessons taught below I want this child to learn.
I've searched the whole world over, for teachers kind and true;

Now will you give him all your love? Nor think the labor pain?

I can't wait until the new arrivial is born. I know how excited you all must be, this time last year we were also awaiting the arrivial of a new baby. Like your baby, Dylan was due last February, early March. Well Dylan couldn't wait and was born February 16th. The new baby is going to be born into a truly wonderful family, he will have great parents, and two great older siblings. I just know he will know his alot about his older brother. His angel watching over the new baby girl as well as all of the Long family.

Hey Longs,
Hope everything is going good. Just wanted to ask if you would put Molly in your prayers. She had her ear surgery in Oct., but the infection was still there. We tried more oral antibiotics, but they didn't work. On Dec. 5th she went to Children's (which she calls "her hospital") to get another Pic line put in to do anti. at home. They were unable to put it in, so she went to surgery and had a central line put in. They decided to keep her overnight. She had a terrible reaction to the anti. Needless to say, we stayed 5 nights. He called in Infectious Disease. They put her on another anti. to take at home. But he said that we are running out of options. We are praying hard that this works, because we don't know what they can try next. She takes this anti. until Dec. 30th. Please keep her in your prayers.

I'm so glad you went to the memorial service, and I'm sure Andrew is glad also. It is such a meaningful service and the staff does it so well.
When Mamie was one of the children being remembered, I noticed that fewer than half of the families attended the service. It is too hard for some to go, just as it is too scary and sad for some parents to go back and visit the clinic and Four Tower, but it is really worht it.
Andrew and Mamie are having a wonderful time playing where they never have to stop to rest or take medicine. When we see them again it will be forever.

It is so hard to believe it has been a year. It seems like just yesterday Andrew had re-taught me how to play UNO, and I got so excited I forgot all about him having cancer, and just got so into his contagiousness (did i just make that word up?) for the game, I beat him at it!!! Anne, you about killed me when you said "you beat my baby at UNO????" That was Andrew, sharing all he loved and I don't really think he was upset I won. I became a child again with him. I am so blessed to be able to have my memories of Andrew, although not as many as most, I treasure them non-the-less! I cannot wait to meet the next Long angel, I think about what Andrew may be teaching that little soul right now before they get here! Happy Day Andrew, Happy Day that you met our Lord! Anne, Bruce, Sarah, and all, we love you, and remember Andrew on this day we lost him and God scored one more sweet angel.

Hi Anne, Bruce and Sarah, I am checking in on you...I was a little behind. I want to tell you how touched I am by the story of Andrew's quilt made from his clothes (what a great idea) and also, I like the story of Sarah finding the money in Andrew's pockets. That gave me chills! The memorial service sounded wonderful. Thanks for sharing what they said about Andrew. I know I only met Andrew briefly maybe one or two times but I feel like I know him through what you have written about him. Thanks for continuing to keep everyone up to date on your lives. It really touched my heart to see Andrew's marker. It is absolutely perfect !!! How he loved his snowman and Mr. Snowman was always with him. I am sure Sarah treasures getting to love on Mr. Snowman.
The quilt is something quite special. I looked at it and saw so many of the shirts I remember Andrew wearing to his daily radiation treatments. Especially the Superman and Spiderman shirts.

Thanks for the new pictures!!! Awesome, and the article was wonderful! I have some pictures of last year we need to trade! (remember my battery died, and then I used your camera to stalk Andrew and Sarah for you?) Just wasn't the same this year. There was just this neat excitement on the field last year with Andrew being able to make it there, and to even get to participate despite not feeling great. He will be remembered every year now! Tell Sarah to pick a day to come home next week, and bring her bathing suit! We may even have the gates up so max can come play w/ Duke! (tell bruce not to fear any new puppies, the neighbors gave them all away!)

Today I cried... for Andrew and for your family. I get so angry sometimes and I don't write as much, because I feel so sad and I just can't think of anything positive to write. Because nothing that I say ...can or will make things better for you. But I do want you to know that I think of you and I pray for you... What a fabulous picture! I thought of you all so often during the weekend, but it wasn't until I saw the photo of Andrew from last year that I realized, the bib number 2 was never assigned this year. Valerie suggested we retire the number 2. Your family and Andrew have and continue to be, such an integral part of the Mercedes Kids Marathon and raising money for childhood cancer research; we would be honored to have bib no 2 be for Andrew. With your permission, we will retire the number 2 bib and it will always be Andrew's number. Andrew will be with us always.

This is another one of my FAVORITE pictures of Andrew!!!! You are so sweet to mention me, but don't forget that cousin JENNIFER ran too!!! I saw her before the race, and then Liz told me she ran with her and that she ROCKED!!!!! Congrats Jenn! I thought about you all on Sat, remembering that Andrew had bravely run in the previous marathon. The new picture shows his pride in the medal he was awarded.
Way to go Sarah.... I know Andrew was running beside you in spirit and encouraging you to go a little faster.

I am so sorry for your loss and am praying for you. I got this link from a relative Sara Talo. She sent it to me because I just set up a caringbridge site for my niece carlyniemitalo who has medulloblastoma. She is four and is the baby girl of 9 children. The brother just before her died of dehydration so she is the one who brought delight back into their home. This is so sad but the Lord has a peace over it all. They have chosen not to do chemo and radiation as her large tumor could not be completely removed so close to the brain stem. she has other tumors and some in the spinal fluid. Her deficits are overwhelming yet she doesn't seem to be in pain. She can't talk and is on a feeding tube. She just looks and can squeeze your finger with one hand. Please pray for them too. I have lost a son at age 9 to a 4 wheeler accident and I know it is a hard road but I also know Jesus and He carries us. love Debbie

I love seeing the newest photos of Andrew! I have noticed in several of the photos, just off to the side, there is often a large adult hand holding or steadying Andrew. SPECIAL LITTLE SPIRIT
"You're a Special Little Spirit,"
the all great Master said,
As he gently caressed the curly blond hair
of the Little Spirit's head
"You need to go to Earth
to spend some time, you know,
A place I send most Spirits
to be tested, to learn, and grow."
The Little Spirit, in sadness,
slowly bowed her head,
And from her eye a tear did steal
and down her cheek it shed.
"Don't you fret now little one,
I won't let you stay too long,
I'll bring you back to help me here,
You'll hardly know that you've been gone.
You're my choicest Little Spirit,
you're the apple of my eye."
And he wiped the tear and gently kissed
His Little Spirit good-bye.
"I'm back," the Little Spirit whispered,
as she climbed onto her Master's knee,
And the Master said, "I told you,
you would not be long away from me."
And then, the Lord, He noticed
still another tear welled in her eye.
"Why are you so sad, Little Spirit,
whatever should make you cry?"
"I'm glad I'm back," the Little Spirit said,
"but Master you must surely know,
When Your Angel came to get me,
I did not want to go.
I know You said You needed me,
and that I'd be gone the shortest while,
But Lord, couldn't I have had
a little longer earthly trial?"
The Master let the Little Spirit
slip down from off His knee,
He firmly took the little hand and said,
"Come walk with Me."
The Little Spirit and the Lord
slowly walked hand in hand,
As the Master explained her special part
in the great and marvelous plan.
"Now, Lord, I don't mean to argue,
I understand that you needed me home.
But I left in such a hurry,
I left everyone hurting and so alone.
I didn't let my earthly parents know
how much I loved them so.
I was too small to tell them Lord,
how will they ever know?
They feel they've been cheated,
and in a way, so do I.
Not getting to share any more than we did,
how can I ever tell them why?"
"Little Spirit, I know your heart is heavy
with this message you need to share.
But you need not worry anymore,
I'll watch over your loved ones there.
I'll send them loving comfort
as a strong and helping hand.
I'll contend and give peace to their aching hearts,
so they will understand."
The Little Spirit looked up at her Master
and said "Thank You for explaining it to me.
And could you please tell them that I'm safe and happy,
and that someday They'll be here with me?"
"Yes," said the Lord with a smile and a nod,
I'll tell them all that I can.
Then the others came to see the Little Spirit,
as the Lord let go of her hand.
He said, "I'll tell them that you're pure,
as pure as Heaven's Gold,
That I needed the warmth of your perfect soul
to keep Heaven from getting cold"

I was cleaning up a mess Augusta (our dog) made five minutes before I came in to check on you guys and read about the addition of Max. May he keep you as busy as Augusta keeps us! Max looks like he is sure to be an exciting addition! He is adorable. Good luck with keeping him in "dog" status - I held off on getting a dog and I said "No dog on my furniture!" Guess where the dog sleeps - either on the bed with me or in the floor right beside me. He was supposed to be for the kids, but that is my dog!
